My first draft for my IA is due next Saturday, August 15, and I still do not have a specific research question.. My teacher suggested Donald Wayne Foster, a professor who has been able to use textual analysis to identify unknown authors. When my teacher suggested this idea, I think, it was because he (my teacher) thought that Donald Foster used a computer statistics analysis thing... Based off what he suggested, I went to the path, thinking that I can maybe find out what math is involved, basically "decoding" this program Donald Foster used. I am currently in the middle of reading one of Donald Foster's book and it turns out that he doesn't have a computer program. He use…

So I have something in mind for my math IA topic but I'm not sure how viable it is. Basically, I want to figure out the most optimum time gap between movies of the same franchise to maximise revenue. I can use stats and probability as well as calculus and gambler's fallacy. My topic is flexible and I'd appreciate any help. Thank you.

I am considering buying this textbook to give me some extra support with my mathematics SL studies. Is this book still relevant ? It was published in 2012 and is an oxford series http://www.amazon.com/Mathematics-Standard-Oxford-Diploma-Programme/dp/0198390114/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1437956336&sr=8-2&keywords=ib+math+sl

hey ppl, I'm doing my math IA on dollar and rupee prices and with the data which i have from 2001 to 2014, I'll be making a graph to represent it. And i will be using calculus to form a differential equation. And by which i will be predicting the future value of dollar and rupees. So i need a proper research question for this IA. So guys any suggestion for the RQ.?

Hi, as I'm entering my final year in high school, I was told to deicide on a topic for my mathematics internal assessment! Since my teacher told me that the topic had to do something with my interest, I decided go explore the mathematics behind billiard. (I love billiard) I want to explore the idea of geometry behind billiard (something to do with principle of reflection..angle..etc) However, I am having a hard time coming up with a research question.. Can someone give me a hand with coming up with a good research question? Thanks!..

Hi My friend is currently looking for an idea for his Maths IA in SL (he's actually got the level to do HL). Anyway, he really wants to do it on AFL (Australian Football League) and he also wanted to use statistics and probability. Would you have any suggestions that could help him get his IA started? Thank you

I originally chose roller coasters as my topic but I soon realized it was really hard to write about and was a very broad subject. I just recently came up with the idea of analyzing a roller coaster derailment situation using math. Is this a strong enough topic to allow me to do well??

Hi, I am writing my math IA about different ciphers and how to break them. Basically this IA concerns cryptography and I have chosen to write about Julio Caesar shift cipher, the Diffie-Hellman key exchange and RSA. When writing about the Diffie-Hellman key exchange, I stumbled upon a problem I haven't been able to solve for a couple of days: I have no idea how to find primitive roots. Could someone please explain the process for me? I know that it is rather advanced math but I really wish to understand it. Ex, how do I find a primitive root modulo 977? Very grateful for all serious replies

Hello! I'm writing my math exploration about a type of zombie virus, revolving around the question: "How long would it take for the disease to spread to the whole population (initially 7 330 735 000) given that the R0=9-10 (9.5 -> each infected infects 9.5 more) and the number of the susceptible population grows 1.4% each year?" So basically I'm planning to use the exponential equation to solve this, but currently really lost with the subject since we've only just gone through the basics and I have no clue how I could continue the equation (tried googling it but it got a bit complicated). Also, do you think it would be good to include the calculations of the possi…

What course is this? Data Management (SL) - MHF4U4? What would I be learning in this course? Is the syllabus the same as what's found in the standard IB syllabus? Does it differ in any way? Hope someone can answer this, because I'm somewhat confused. I keep on searching online and don't really have an idea. What course work would I be doing? I write the same Papers as everyone else that's taking Maths SL, right? Thanks!

So I've been trying to come up with a Maths IA topic for about a month now and my teacher isn't helping at all, whatsoever. I know he's not meant to help that much but I've always been bad at Maths investigations so this is stressing me out. Here are the ideas so far: - Probability of getting a shot into the pocket in pool: comparing a close yet awkward angle shot to a far yet ideal angle shot - Profit maximisation (involves econometrics) - Minimum/maximum point in roller-coasters - Projectile motion and calculating the maximum point (I don't know what exactly to calculate the motion of) I have all these ideas and a vague idea of the maths involved but I don't really…

So by August 24 I need to submit the first draft of my mathematics IA. My teacher accepted my topic proposal, which includes probability used in genetics. So far I have thought of using punnet squares with probabilities. However just punnet squares might be too easy for an IA. I also plan to include predicting offspring using haemophilia and blood type etc. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can create a complex situation in which I can solve and explain in my Math IA? Thanks!

Hi, I'm going to start working on my exploration soon and have a question regarding my topic. I want to model the path of a missile launched from one country against another. So basically my topic is about ballistic trajectories. What concerns me is whether this topic might be a bit controversial. Is it okay to model eg a missile launched from the US against Iran or is that unacceptable? Hope you get what I mean. Regards

Hi, I don't know if I should choose Mathematics SL. I'm willing to study Biology/Biochemistry and Studies isn't problem at most of the universities. My problem is that I am pretty ambitious person and I don't want to feel mathematically-handicapped, especially if I'm going to be a scientist. In my pre-IB year I have been doing pretty good (although with help, but I think I would do fine without additional tutoring I wasn't so lazy), but Maths are not really my strongest subject. What do you think? Will SL be much harder? Should I choose it? It's not a problem to switch between ST and SL tbh.

Hey guys! I'll get straight to the point. I'm terribly uninterested in mathematics and can't really make any sense of this whole exploration thing as I can't really get into it at all. I've already chosen my topic, which is the math in pyramid schemes and other schemes like this but I am completely lacking ideas on what to do. I'll upload what I have submitted to my teacher so far if you're interested in helping me come up with some ideas and overall helping me on this IA so you'll see what I have come up with so far. I'd like to do as well as possible in this internal assessment as I already know I'm not going to ace the math finals... Any help is greatly appreciated!…

Hey guys! I really need your help I am now taking Math SL but i am extremely bad and i am taking 2s,3s. My June exams are approaching and i was thinking after them to drop to Math studies! I want to study Law or Psychology in UK and i know that for Law is acceptable to have Math studies but for Psychology only if you have bio HL(i have bio SL). And for those taking Math studies, do you think that is possible to study during summer the syllabus covered in IB1? What would you go guys do if you were in my position?

I'm in IB1 and I could really use some help regarding the Math IA. My teacher requires the class to research a topic in which you are able to use 3 mathematical ways such as vectors, probability, logarithms, and so on. If anyone can give me ideas that are not too easy but not too hard, just perfect for Maths SL. Any 3 mathematical EXCEPT Calculus and derivatives. I would search for these topics myself however i just don't have the time with finals coming up and i have an English research paper due in a week. I'm really sorry for any inconvenience. Thanks so much in advance.

Hi guys, I remember reading this somewhere on the ibo website or somewhere about students being entitled to ten hours within school to complete their math internal assessment. First question is, are we allowed ten hours? Second thing is, my school has said that we are and they took us off lessons for a day to teach us about the internal assessment: what makes a good one, marking samples and how to achieve high marks in each criteria. This took about five hours. Note that at this point we hadn't figured out what we were going to do, we had no idea what our IA was to be about. They told us to pick at the end of this time and said that five of our ten hours within school had…

Let's say I scored 30/90 points on P1 Some 25/90 on P2 And my IA was incredibly bad (mainly because my teacher couldn't care less if we fail or not, so he just accepted anything we handed him in and didn't even give us feedback). Points ranging from 1/20 to 5/20. Would my final percentage be calculated like this: 5/20*20 + 30/90*40 + 25/90*40 That'd be 5 + 13,3 + 11,1 = 29,4 ? Thanks!

I decided to go all out on this exploration (as IB calls it). I didn't feel like doing an SL topic as I wanted a high mark and going above and beyond the syllabus seemed the only way I could have gotten that. I decided to do my IA on: Estimating the Gaussian Integral using Riemann Sums and Taylor/MacLaurin Series. I programmed my own program (using VB.net) to calculate the Gaussian integral (to a significant degree of accuracy - 25 decimal places). I showed personal engagement, and the math was well above what was expected. I even derived the power series and the Taylor series in order for my peers to understand what I did. I ended up getting a 11/20. Discussing my IA wit…

I am working with Nov 2014 paper 2, and I had a problem to understand and solve a) (ii), can some one explain it to me? (a) (i) Write down the probability that a fish weighs more than 760g. (ii) Find the probability that a fish weighs less than 815 g. Thanks in advance!

I just can't figure out how to set the y-value to 10 000 to find the x-value. I tried putting a point on the graph and then typing 10000 into the y-coordinate but it wasn't working.. Hi guys, So I'll be taking my Math SL exam in a couple days and I would like to seek some clarification on the formatting of the Math SL exam. While doing mock exams, I noticed there is a fixed space (a small box) for Section A answers. Can anyone who previously took the Math SL exam or has knowledge on this topic clarify if the box given is the only space allowed for answers? On the cover sheet it says otherwise but I don't think that it is logical to fit answers for some questions that require multiple parts and work unless u divide the box into two columns which would be rather messy. Thanks to anyone who offer insight! Good luck to others writing exams as well! . …

Hi there, So it looks like at this point I'm in serious danger of getting a 1 on the IB Mathematics SL exam, considering how well I've been doing on practice exams. I received a 14 out of 20 on my IA (at least that's what my teacher gave me for a score, but it was selected to be sent to IB, so it could change by one or two points. My guess is that it will stay the same). So here's my question: what are the absolutely minimum scores I can get on Paper 1 and 2 to get a TWO overall on the IB exam? I have pretty high expected scores in all of my other subjects, so if I can get at least a TWO on the math exam, I can still get my diploma. My only problem is that a 1 is…

Hi guys! We're doing our explorations now and since I'm not the strongest in Math, I want to use a topic that will be useful in another subject as wekk, so I turned to Biology. So what I figured out was that I'm fascinated by genetics, ecology and probability; and the Hardy-Weinberg principle seems like a perfect match. This is the thing: I've seen people say it's been used in IAs before but how? The math behind that principle is super basic, isn't it––p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1 is definitely not SL level Math. Does anyone have any advice on how to go on from that? We haven't done probability yet, so maybe I'm missing something big here? Thank you so much!
