Hi guys,I wanted to ask something.I have been thinking of doing my exploration about astronomy. And writing something about the Hohmann transfer method seems the best option to me,since it involves advanced maths as well as physics.Maybe I can find how long it takes to reach a specific planet, what amount of escape velocity needed and when to make right adjustments(launching rockets). Would a question like 'How can a spacecraft reach to Mercury,by using the Hohmann Transfer method?' be suitable? I chose Mercury, because if I do neighbour planets, than there would be more simple calculations involved.

I am a person who is curious, and at some extent, I say, good at science (bio and chem). However, Math is another matter for me. I am terrible at Math. In the final examination of year 10, I got 0% for Math and I became a legend in our school. I want to do science/art double degree in university of Sydney. But I think I need a math SL to do that. Considering my current Math skill, I think Math SL will destroy me. I am struggling right now. The fact is that I still have 5-7 weeks to improve my Math as much as possible, do you think that is enough for me to start again?

Just wondering if you're allowed to open up the formula booklet on the table before time officially starts? e.g. flip the formula booklet to calculus before exam has officially begun.

Hey guys, So I'm doing my maths IA on RSA encryption. Basically, I'm just showing the mathematics behind this form of coding and it was so far so good until I got to decryption. You see, I need to find a number D such that 7(D) = 1 (mod 48). All of the modulus calculators I've been using are saying the value for this is 1. My problem with this is that 27(D) = 1 (mod 40) will give you 81 yet online modulus calculators say that it's actually 1. So are these online modulus calculators wrong or is 1 mod 48 actually 1?

Hello, my dear! I have decided to write my Maths IA on topic connected to Economics, something about cost, revenue and profit curves. My teacher has recommended me to look for an article about a firm and write my IA based on that one specific firm. I have no idea what to do or what to look for. Any ideas?

So I have to decide on my topic for my exploration this weekend and I do have some Ideas but I'm not sure if they're suitable What I'm interested in most is exploring infinity If I did this I might write about things as different sets of infinity, countable and uncountable. And might also use Hilbert's paradox of the Grand hotel. I'm not however sure if there would be enough math involved and if it's appropriate. If not would any of you know another way to approach and discuss infinity? My second choice would be exploring the Law of Large numbers and why it works. Thanks in advance for any help

Hi, I'm doing an IA on blackjack, but I feel like the topic is getting complicated than what I expected to be. Is it alright to change some rules (like only covering the probability of a single hand) or impose a limit (such as the player/dealer can only pick up 5 cards at maximum) when writing an IA?

Can you use any angle or base to use the equation bh/2? I can't find the area of triangle KLM with angle L = 42 degrees, LM = 6.1 cm KM = 4.2 It says the triangle is obtuse even though the picture shows an acute triangle so I took the bottom right corner (across form angle L) and shoved it leftwards to make it obtuse (because 4.2 is greater than the height. There, using bh/2 I still don't have the right answer: 7.23cm^2

Hey guys! I've received a lot of contradicting views on which textbook to study for my Maths SL exams. I wanted to get your input on it. Currently, were using the textbook by Fabio Cirrito, my teachers says the questions are really tough for Sl and if we could solve those we could solve the IB paper. Some people are suggesting the Haese one but I've heard others saying that it's too simple. The last one is the Oxford one. Which I don't know much about honestly. Do you know which one I should adopt to tackle the Math SL exams? Anybody with experience on these textbooks? Thanks!

For my Math ia, I have decided to investigate why certain patterns in pascal's triangle occur such as the square pattern, diagonal pattern, the squares of 11 pattern, and horizontal sum. My teacher requires us to submit 3-5 pages on our topic, background and abstract. I am having trouble meeting the required length because I am having trouble extending those things to 3-5 pages. Could I have any tips to help me out on this?

So I'm currently in the Pre-IB, and I'm a sophomore, and still, I'm kind of worried about next year, and about the real IB and my subjects, and I'm particularly curious about Math SL. I wouldn't say I'm a mathematical genius, but I've gotten consistent B's throughout freshman year without barely opening a textbook; I'd go to class, listen to the teacher, and without revising or studying at home, or even having a very good study technique, I'd show up to the exam and score around a B+. I haven't quite decided yet if I'd like to go for Psychology or Economics at university, and so I kind of just want to be able to have both opportunities (obviously I won't be able to go to…

Hey guys! My teacher just introduced me to the mathematics SL IA, otherwise known as the exploration. I just got an idea for a topic, but I am unsure whether the topic can be sufficiently explored as a mathematics SL exploration. I might be overthinking this; Its just that my teacher kept repeating over and over again the importance of the chosen topic. He said that if the topic is not suitable for a SL exploration, then I couldn't get high marks for one of the criteria. My chosen topic is the pyramid system of a multi level marketing (MLM) Some of the syllabus topics that I have been able to identify are: 1. Exponential and logarithmic functions 2. Patterns, sequ…

I'm still choosing a topic for my IA, but I'm stuck on whether this topic would be appropriate or whether it would have enough mathematical content. I wanted to focus on personality quizzes such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator but I think it's a dead end so I might try going down the route of mathematical psychology. Could I analyse an existing mathematical model of a psychological process or would I need to formulate my own for it to be suitable? Thank you very much

Hi do you guys think I can do a Math IA about carbon dating? I am not sure because it seems to be the only thing i understand. However, i can't come up with a mathematical aim. I thought about somehow determining it's accuracy. Do you guys have an idea on what direction or aim I should follow for this IA? Also, would modelling the spread of an epidemic such as ebola be a good topic? I was also considering that, but i don't have an aim!! ugh

So my math IA is is coming up and i want to predict the outcome of a soccer match by analyzing the stats such as pass completion %, goal to shot ratio, goals per game average and so on. I would also like to include calculations used in statistics but my teacher said that the math is not advanced enough just comparing averages and graphing them. So does anyone else have any suggestions on how to analyze the data with course math. btw i am SL math

Hey guys! So I really want to start my math exploration. I wanted to do a topic that strikes a balance between creative real world application and showing my ability to apply maths according to the IB syllabus. I've narrowed it down to about 3 topics. 1) Is it possible to pick an optimum position to shoot a penalty in a football match using statistics and probability? - In essence. I would gather statistics on which area of the goal is least likely to be saved by a goal keeper. Players for left foot or right foot, succes at different times of the match and things like that. I would then use probability to calculate here the player should shoot. 2) Using chi-squar…

Hi guys, so I need to do an IA for SL Math and I wanted to do mine on windsurfing, I was thinking of maybe: "How to model a water start?" "What is the maximum speed a windsurfer can achieve?" (modelling the weight and wind with a given specifics on the sail and board) If there are any more ideas for this I would love to hear it. However, I am worried that I am looking into physics too much and I need to focus on the Math. Any feedback would be exceptionally helpful.

So I'm thinking of modeling an infectious disease for my IA. The only thing I can use is the SIR model, which doesn't have the scope to max out criterion E. Does anyone have any tips on complicating this to make it to perhaps a high SL, or perhaps HL standard? I'm an SL student but I really wanna maximize my marks, don't mind self-studying a few HL topics, or topics outside the syllabus. All help appreciated, thanks!

I've only just started the IB a few days ago, and my teacher said that we won't officially start the IA before January, but we can start it ourselves first if we want. I found a topic a while ago that I really liked and I want to know if it's worth doing and how good it is? It's called Hilbert's Grand Hotel Paradox, whereby the hotel has an infinite room of numbers, all full, and how to deal with new guests. There's a little bit of one-to-one correspondence in regards to math, and there are several formulas on how to deal with different types of guests (1 new guest means moving everyone to room n+1 so the new guest gets a room, etc). It would take a long time explaining…

Hello everyone. I just have a quick question on my SL math IA topic. The topic I plan on using is a correlation investigation on the market shares and total assets of Apple Inc. from 1984 to 2004. I already have all the stats and started the math using Pearson's coefficient formula. However, I am also writing a business and management EE on Apple Inc. as well and am using some of the same statistics. Not all of the numbers from my IA are in my EE, but some definitely are. Am I allowed to do this or do I have to choose a new topic due to plagiarism or something of the like? Replay quickly please and thank you!!!

Hello guys: I just finished my math exploration (11 pages long), and I'm using the APA reference format. But i'm wondering whether this format is only applied to the references (at the end of the document), or if it should be applied to all the document. If that's the case, I would have to apply double spacing between lines to every paragraph and that would make me exceed the limit. By the way, do you know of any format that doesn't include double spacing between lines as a requirement? Thanks in advance
