Hello everyone, currently I am writing a new math IA and i decided to write it under the topic of Projectile Motion. What what I want to do is take a video of a setter (in volleyball) and him setting the ball up. I'll take that video and create a graph and will derive that function. The thing is, I think that this is a little to vague, and I really don't have a clue on what to really explore within my topic. For the volleyball idea, I wanted to originally see what's the best place to put the ball in the air to get a good hit in for the spiker. If you have any further suggestions on what e

I have my first rough draft of my math IA due in one month, and I am having trouble understanding if my topic is too simple, difficult, or vague for a Math IA, I would appreciate some advice. NOTE; I DO NOT TAKE PHYSICS, NOR WILL I BE TAKING IT. I realise many people say I should take on a topic that involves physics if I don't take it or completely understand the concepts I am using from Physics, but I have no choice. My math teacher told me I can't change my topic, so I'm stuck with it! My idea was to maximize the success of a volleyball serve using the concepts of projectile motio

Hello! I was interested in doing an IA around zero waste fashion designing like Yuima Nakazato's work, and looked into non-euclidean geometry and developable surfaces but all of them seemed to be beyond my course. Is there any topics I can explore related to fashion design that encompasses perhaps tangent lines to curves or standard euclidean geometry? Also I was watching a lecture and it was talking about flexibility? Perhaps I could also use that but I wasn't very sure of the concept. I hope someone can help!

So our school just started talking about the math SL ia which will be due in February, and our teachers gave us close to zero pointers. I have no idea where to start. I initially wanted to do something related to the Gini coefficient and wealth inequality in certain countries, but I heard somewhere that statistics IAs are often marked harder by examiners. I want to do something related to art, (such as the vitruvian man, da Vinci's use of mathematics) but I don't know how that could connect to math and the SL syllabus. Architecture is also something I'm open to. It would be great if u gu

Hello! Recently, I have come up with calculating the volume and surface area of wine glasses for my Math IA (I am in Maths SL). I am just wondering whether if this idea is suitable for Maths SL and whether if it shows personal engagement. Since this idea would involved relatively more heavy calculus as I am at SL level, would it show personal engagement because I am attempting to learn something more challenging and outside the scope of the syllabus? In my opinion, it is not exactly unique or crazy creative compared to the sample IA's I see, for example graphing cosmetic contact lens patterns.

My teacher has this same question about the marking of Math paper 1 and 2 with correct significant figures. In the marking scheme, it saids "If the level of accuracy is specified in the question, a mark will be allocated for giving the final answer to the required accuracy. When this is not specified in the question, all numerical answers should be given exactly or correctly to three significant figures." Does this mean that I get full credit if I write 1.45378 while the answer key is 1.45(3 Sig), (1.4537893838...) ? Please help.

Hey guys, I made a post earlier and I did not get any replies. I am really desperate this time. Does anyone know or know somebody who will be able to give me some help on benford's law for my IA. I need to be able to understand the depth of it to write my IA and any help is appreciated. PLEASE ANYONE WHO KNOWS ABOUT IT, REPLY PLEASSSSEEEE Usually it is a topic taught in univeristy classes and commonly in economics! THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR HELPING ME OUT (if anyone does....PLEASEEEE..)

Hi, I was wondering if any one has any ideas for the Math IA that relate to scuba diving? I'm really struggling to find something... Or if anyone has done it in the past, what was your idea? Thank you!

For May 2020 results, did anyone else notice that their SL Math grade was much lower than their predicted? My SL math grade was 2 points lower than what was predicted, and I have never received a grade this low in any Math IB coursework. It’s not like I didn’t put much effort into my IA.....can anyone else relate?

Hi there! I had a question on how I should prepare for my Math SL exam which is on May 5th. I was planning on completing all question banks for each unit, going over lessons and textbook questions. Do you think that is enough? I understand a lot of people do past papers however, if I complete all the questions in the questionbank, isn't that basically the same thing because those are past questions as well? Or is there a big difference between doing past papers and question banks? Please let me know! Thank you

IA Math IA topic help.... Is this topic up to the level of Math SL
abdelrahman posted a topic in Maths SL
I am starting my math IA I have decided to choose the Monty Hall Problem as my topic. I was thinking about explaining the Monty Hall Problem using conditional probability and then expand the Problem by trying it on more than three doors like for example four or five doors in order to try and find a trend or a sequence or a general equation. Is this topic up to the level of the Math SL course and do you have any suggestions about things I should add to the IA. Thank you, your help is really appreciated.- 5 replies

I am thinking of doing my IA on the optimum volleyball net height based on average player height? My teacher has given no guidance, so I'm not sure if this is even somewhat doable. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice? Thanks!

I've started my Math SL IA (finally) after not being able to find a topic for months, whatever I found I either didn't understand, was too simple, or my teacher said there was too little math in it. Currently, I'm working on an IA on the Tower of Hanoi, which happens to also be in an IB sample IA. I'm using the same aim and methods in the sample, but I am planning to cite the sample in my references and use my own words and personal engagement. I told my teacher about the similarity to the sample and she approved my topic, but I'm worried I'm plagiarising and will be penalised f

Hi guys, I’m currently working on my Math SL IA and I need help on what maths to use. I am investigating the variables affecting reaction time, such as sleep, gender and involvement in sports. My teacher approved my topic, yet he said simple statistics would not be enough for an SL IA. He said I could calculate probabilities from the distribution graphs, but I’m not sure what he meant. If anyone could explain how I could use probabilities and give me more ideas on what maths I could apply in my investigation, I would really appreciate it.

Hi all so I'm really desperate here 😓 I suck at maths and have no idea on how to progress my ia mathwise Basically my question - How can I minimise costs (expenses) in order to achieve a maximum amount of profit? (in a bake sale) I was planning to Find out the total cost of the ingredients ( with reference to the recipe from Joy Food Sunshine) Determine how many we need to break even (Break-Even chart) Based on break-even number how much ingredients do we need and cost Then find the ‘volume’ for the cookie dough and

Hi again, so my exam is in a few days and I'm pretty much done studying. All I'm really wondering is, are there any calculator tips or any videos/websites that thoroughly explain the functions of the Ti 83 Plus Graphing Calculator? Particularly for like probability or statistics but any general special tips or hacks would be nice. If you have any videos, websites or just personal tips, please let me know!!! Thanks!!!!!

Hi guys. I'm in my last year of Math IB (SL) and I'm in desperate need of some guidance. I have no idea how to go about doing my IA. I've decided that I want to find the optimal speed at which a vehicle (a tank specifically) should travel to get the best fuel efficiency. Along with this, I might also try and figure out the temperatures at which oil would freeze inside the engine by like graphing/modelling it somehow?????? As you can see, I'm really lost and I don't know how to approach this topic and I don't even know what math I should be using. Any advice on how I shou

Hi I'm wondering if anybody can explain the reverse chain rule to me? I don't mean the whole U-Substitution thing, I mean the "shortcut" way. The formula is ∫f'(g(x)) · g'(x) dx = f(g(x)) + c. Also, we haven't learned calculus and trig or calculus and logs yet so please just use basic equations in any examples. Thank you!!!!

Can you use the TI-83 (plus) calculators to create a frequency histogram with uneven classes? (we call it a frequency density graph) If so, how? (I'm not sure how to input the ranges, for example, the range is 0-30, 30-40, 40-60 etc. I have calculated the frequency density itself I'm just not sure how to create the graph on a calculator.)
