  1. Hi, I was wondering if any one has any ideas for the Math IA that relate to scuba diving? I'm really struggling to find something... Or if anyone has done it in the past, what was your idea? Thank you!
  2. For May 2020 results, did anyone else notice that their SL Math grade was much lower than their predicted? My SL math grade was 2 points lower than what was predicted, and I have never received a grade this low in any Math IB coursework. It’s not like I didn’t put much effort into my IA.....can anyone else relate?
  3. Hi there! I had a question on how I should prepare for my Math SL exam which is on May 5th. I was planning on completing all question banks for each unit, going over lessons and textbook questions. Do you think that is enough? I understand a lot of people do past papers however, if I complete all the questions in the questionbank, isn't that basically the same thing because those are past questions as well? Or is there a big difference between doing past papers and question banks? Please let me know! Thank you
  4. I am starting my math IA I have decided to choose the Monty Hall Problem as my topic. I was thinking about explaining the Monty Hall Problem using conditional probability and then expand the Problem by trying it on more than three doors like for example four or five doors in order to try and find a trend or a sequence or a general equation. Is this topic up to the level of the Math SL course and do you have any suggestions about things I should add to the IA. Thank you, your help is really appreciated.
  5. I am thinking of doing my IA on the optimum volleyball net height based on average player height? My teacher has given no guidance, so I'm not sure if this is even somewhat doable. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice? Thanks!
  6. I've started my Math SL IA (finally) after not being able to find a topic for months, whatever I found I either didn't understand, was too simple, or my teacher said there was too little math in it. Currently, I'm working on an IA on the Tower of Hanoi, which happens to also be in an IB sample IA. I'm using the same aim and methods in the sample, but I am planning to cite the sample in my references and use my own words and personal engagement. I told my teacher about the similarity to the sample and she approved my topic, but I'm worried I'm plagiarising and will be penalised f
  7. Hi guys, I’m currently working on my Math SL IA and I need help on what maths to use. I am investigating the variables affecting reaction time, such as sleep, gender and involvement in sports. My teacher approved my topic, yet he said simple statistics would not be enough for an SL IA. He said I could calculate probabilities from the distribution graphs, but I’m not sure what he meant. If anyone could explain how I could use probabilities and give me more ideas on what maths I could apply in my investigation, I would really appreciate it.
  8. Hi! I have a problem with part B in this math exercise. Could you give me a hint? Thank you :)
  9. Hi all so I'm really desperate here 😓 I suck at maths and have no idea on how to progress my ia mathwise Basically my question - How can I minimise costs (expenses) in order to achieve a maximum amount of profit? (in a bake sale) I was planning to Find out the total cost of the ingredients ( with reference to the recipe from Joy Food Sunshine) Determine how many we need to break even (Break-Even chart) Based on break-even number how much ingredients do we need and cost Then find the ‘volume’ for the cookie dough and
  10. A ship is sailing due west when the captain sees a lighthouse at a distance of 20 km on a bearing of 230°. a. how far must the ship sail before the lighthouse is 16km away? b. how far must the ship sail beyond this point before the lighthouse is again at a distance of 16km from the ship? c. what is the bearing of the lighthouse from the ship the second time the two are 16km apart?
  11. Hi again, so my exam is in a few days and I'm pretty much done studying. All I'm really wondering is, are there any calculator tips or any videos/websites that thoroughly explain the functions of the Ti 83 Plus Graphing Calculator? Particularly for like probability or statistics but any general special tips or hacks would be nice. If you have any videos, websites or just personal tips, please let me know!!! Thanks!!!!!
  12. Hi guys. I'm in my last year of Math IB (SL) and I'm in desperate need of some guidance. I have no idea how to go about doing my IA. I've decided that I want to find the optimal speed at which a vehicle (a tank specifically) should travel to get the best fuel efficiency. Along with this, I might also try and figure out the temperatures at which oil would freeze inside the engine by like graphing/modelling it somehow?????? As you can see, I'm really lost and I don't know how to approach this topic and I don't even know what math I should be using. Any advice on how I shou
  13. Hi I'm wondering if anybody can explain the reverse chain rule to me? I don't mean the whole U-Substitution thing, I mean the "shortcut" way. The formula is ∫f'(g(x)) · g'(x) dx = f(g(x)) + c. Also, we haven't learned calculus and trig or calculus and logs yet so please just use basic equations in any examples. Thank you!!!!
  14. Hello everyone, currently I am writing a new math IA and i decided to write it under the topic of Projectile Motion. What what I want to do is take a video of a setter (in volleyball) and him setting the ball up. I'll take that video and create a graph and will derive that function. The thing is, I think that this is a little to vague, and I really don't have a clue on what to really explore within my topic. For the volleyball idea, I wanted to originally see what's the best place to put the ball in the air to get a good hit in for the spiker. If you have any further suggestions on what e
  15. Can you use the TI-83 (plus) calculators to create a frequency histogram with uneven classes? (we call it a frequency density graph) If so, how? (I'm not sure how to input the ranges, for example, the range is 0-30, 30-40, 40-60 etc. I have calculated the frequency density itself I'm just not sure how to create the graph on a calculator.)
  16. I really need some help rn. I'm thinking of doing a math exploration in the topic of Correlation between GDP Per Capita and Gini Coefficient in Countries. Basically, Gini coefficient is a measure of income equality in a country. The higher the coefficient is, the higher the income inequality. However, the mathematics skills & analyses I will use & do will probably only be from the topics of descriptive statistics and linear modelling. And so far, the IA samples I've seen with similar topics in correlation are only from math studies, so I'm getting concerned. is this topic to

    Math IA Help!

Hi, so I decided that for my math IA, I wanted to look at the impacts of asteroids hitting the Earth using this website: https://www.purdue.edu/impactearth/ The idea I have is to collect different data like how big the crater size is and how it changes depending on the size or speed of the asteroid and more stuff like that. I then want to make graphs and find trends and see if these factors makes equations and stuff. I was also thinking that I could use the Richter scale to look at the intensities of the earthquakes and maybe show how that works. I don't know if this is very in depth and
  19. Hey guys, I'm in a pretty stressful situation as I can't decide whether to change my current SL Math to HL Math, and we're already getting to the point where it is too late to change. My situation: Currently taking HL Bio, Chem, Eng A Lang/Lit, Danish B and SL Math, and History. I want to study medicine in the UK after I graduate in 2020, and my dream is to go to Cambridge, but as I've read on their website only 2% of acceptances go to those who only have 2 subjects out of HL Bio, Chem, Phys, and Math. As I can only have two sciences, my only option is to switch to HL math (whic
  20. Hello, I am looking for the online version of the Mathematics for the IB Diploma Standard Level published by Cambridge University Press. Does anyone have a google drive link to it? Thanks!
  21. Hi guys!! Im retaking HL Chemistry and SL Math this upcoming November and I was wondering if there is any advice anybody could give me?.. Or if there is anybody in the same position as me who is also retaking one of the subjects in November:) If you guys have any advice regarding possible online review courses, materials you recommend, or just the nature of the November examinations I would really really appreciate it. Thank you!!☺️
  22. Hi! So my math sl ia is due sometime soon, and I can't seem to get started with it. This is the fifth time I've changed my topic, so I've wasted quite a lot of time. I finally decided to do my math sl ia on this topic: Modelling the development of swimming performance in the Asian Games.I'm planning to focus on the gold medal winning times in the women's 50 and 100 freestyle. However, I'm not sure on what mathematical concepts and processes I'm supposed to use to model it. I've read a lot of literature on it, but I still don't quite grasp the concept of how to model it. I've tried a
  23. Hi I’m going into math sl and we have to write an IA. I wanted to write an IA on population growth in China but i have no idea how to. Can someone tell me how to write this and if it’s a suitable subject for Math SL IA?
  24. So I am trying to get my math IA done this summer but am having a hard time choosing a topic that I like. I am really interested in film and cinematography and would like to incorporate it in my math IA but have found nothing on math ia topics that involved film from past math IA topics. I decided that I would come up with my own math IA exploration that has not been done before. My topic/question is "Does movies/films that use the Fibonacci sequence and Golden Ratio make high profits compared to movies that don't?" Is this a good idea for a math IA topic? Could I make it better? Are there any
