Hi! I'm currently on the second half of IB1 and just got to this new Mexican school a couple months ago. The rest of my IB education I took in Finland and Denmark, and my Group 4 subjects were Philosophy (1.5 years) and Anthropology ( a few months), but the only group 3 subject my school is offering at the moment is History, Route 2. I know nothing about History whatsoever; the methods, the schemes and stuff. All attempts to come up with a topic for my IA (which I'm expected to write a first draft for by the end of the month) end up sounding either like a philosophical or an anthropological or a social study. I really don't get how History works - How are you expecte…

So I'm writing an IA for History of the Americas (HL) and I want to write about the Panama Canal Treaties in 1977. Do you guys think "To what extent did the signing of the Panama Canal Treaties signal a shift in US foreign policy that would introduce human rights into policymaking?" is a good question? I feel like it may be a bit too broad. Help?

I have an essay questions which is "To what extent did nationalism lead to WW1?" but I'm having trouble with how I should approach it. Should I speak about nationalism in terms of military and political effects (and if so how do I go about doing this) or should I focus on Slavic and German nationalism?

I'm starting the IA process in History right now and I wanted to do something with the Bataan Death March (maybe something to do with the Japanese POW treatment) since it's an interesting topic with a lot of primary sources, but I don't know how to form a good research question out of it. Any help/tips would be great.

Hi guys! I put 'Dresden' into IBS search and first place it popped up in was 'History IA overused topics' -- how about it, is it a bad idea to use it? I was originally planning to go with something about my own country because it's so obscure but, it wouldn't be relevant to the syllabus and I'd rather use something that I can use in the exam as well. I'm also using Slaughterhouse 5 in my EE, so knowing more about the bombing couldn't hurt, I figure. My idea is to do something in the lines of the reasons for, effects of and justification of the bombing. I'd love to hear your ideas! (Even if you think this is bogus and that I need to run fast from this topic heh.) Thank y…

I wasn't sure whether to post this in the Extended Essay forum, or this one. I am working on my history extended essay, and i am a considerable way in. Background info; I don't take IB history; I last took history at IGCSE level. My supervisor/mentor for my EE is an english teacher, and is frankly incompetent at the technical history stuff. She has absolutely no idea on how i could tackle the evaluation.. Therefore, my brothers and sisters of this IB forum, could you help me out?

Hi, As the exams are coming closer and with all the 6 subjects to study for, I really don't have time to review everything. Thus I am trying to think of a short-cut. As I looked through the old exams for history paper 1 communism in crisis, i noticed that in the years that are even (i.e. May 2010 & 2012), students would be tested on China; while for those years that are odd (i.e. May 2011, May 2013), collapse of USSR & Eastern Europe would be tested instead. So assuming that this trend will continue, i think that for this year (May 2014), paper 1 is going to be about China. So my question is: Would it be wise to only study for China or would it be too risky? Thank…

What is the cut off year for history? For example, I want to write about Cuba's Rectification Process and Special Period. I would be writing specifically about the years 1986-1996, but I'm afraid that its too recent. Does anyone know if there is a cut off or something? Thank you!

I have a paper 3 in class essay on Napoleon soon.. Is the structure of a paper 3 essay similar to a paper 2 essay? Will you lose marks if you don't have an introduction (because you don't get much time for each essay)? What is the best way to approach the topic? If I need an intro, do I need to come up with a hook or do I just write the thesis statement? What are other ways to get into the 18-20 range on the markband besides using historiography and challenging the question? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Hey guys, I'm really interested in Spanish history so I have selected the topic of Spain's return to democracy for my internal assessment. My research question is "How did the death of Francisco Franco contribute to the return of democracy in Spain?" I am just a little bit confused on how I should go about structuring my argument. It is not really a controversial topic, so should I talk about how there was already weakness in the dictatorship that Franco led, and how Juan Carlos I's appointment just helped put into place a movement that was already happening before Franco's death? I found a lot of sources that talk about how the violence in the Spanish Civil War also …

Dear All, "To what extent was the role of the state a key factor in determining the success of the economic miracle in any one country of the region in the second half of the twentieth century." is the question that I need to answer in my history essay in a week... it's a Paper 3 question. I am currently having a difficulty with understanding the command term "To what extent-"... what am I supposed to talk about as in reply of such questions? Also, what do I have to do to write a 6 or a 7 Paper 3 essay?? Is it really different from Paper 2? Detailed answers would be much appreciated... thank you so much Gayon

I apologize if this question has been asked before, but I am writing my Historical Investigation and am about 1,300 words in and have yet to complete Section D and E. I'm concerned that I'll go over the word limit. I know that Section F: Referencing and the appendix do not count toward the word count, but what about section titles, etc? Also, should I label my different sections A, B, C, etc? Thanks!

Hi everyone! Right now I'm about to produce some nice IA-essay in history and I'm still trying to come up with a good research question. I was just wondering about what is tolerated? The answer shouldn't be too obvious, it should be a ''historical problem'' and historically relevant, yes I got that. But really, where goes the line? I have looked for official rules but haven't really found any. Are there any precise guidelines? I think it's a bit vague. And also, is popular culture completely forbidden to research or can you do an essay on for instance a musician/band's career or impact on whatever? Can you study the the history of the camera or the history of table tenn…

I understand the time limitations for Paper 1 and that the final question is the most important and is worth 8 marks. My problem is that, during both of our past mock exams, I have not been able to produce a very good essay, in my eyes, with the "allotted" 20 minutes. For the other questions, however, I have received full if not almost full marks. So, are there any pointers for writing question 4? Should I give myself more time (e.g. 25 minutes) to complete it if I seem to struggle with producing an answer? Should I just practise more to perfect my technique? What really constitutes an exceptional answer for this question?

So i had already written al IA, but muy teacher told me it was to general, and broad. It was "To what extent did the American civil war advance technology? I still want to do the IA on the civil war, I was thinking on " To what extent was Lincoln's election the main cause of the war?" But it feels too broad, or not good enough. I had also the idea of making it about how important was the march to the sea to win the war, or a certain battle. My teacher told me I could focus on how the war advanced certain technologies, such as rifles or warships but I don't know if that will be enough to wrote about

I want to do something about the Iranian Hostage Crisis (like that one in that movie Argo, 2012) but I don't know what to focus on. How the events in the movie (Argo) are inaccurate? The different views of the media in Iran and America? How the event was portrayed in American media and how it has changed? Do you think any of these questions might be good to do an HI on? 1. To what extent did the Münster Rebellion politically affect the course of Lutheranism in 1536? 2. To what extent was the Peace of Augsburg in 1555 successful in instigating peace between the Lutheran and Catholic states of Germany? 3. To what extent was the emergence of Calvinism successful as an international movement compared to Lutheranism? I just don't want to do something that has been done too much in the past. Just let me know what you guys think. And Please feel free to reword it as my wording may not be the greatest. Thanks

Hi everyone My IA is due way too soon and I have come up with the following topic To what extent can the Hossbach Memorandum be considered as an evidence for Hitler planning to go to war The two sources I will be comparing are excerpts from A.J.P. Taylor's The Origins of the Second World War and Richard Overy's The Origins of the Second World War Reconsidered, so they are both views from historians, opposing each other. Do you think I have chosen a good research question which is focused enough? Do you think my sources are good?

For exam prep, I'm making a list of possible questions for the three units that I chose to dissect and then making outlines for them to study. The Emergence of the Americas is one of them so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what sort of questions could be made under this section? Assess the reasons for US entry into World War One. 4. Account for the shift in American foreign policy from isolationist to intervention in the Western hemisphere (but if a mor…

Hi guys, So I'm starting Part B of my history IA (Summary of Evidence), and I just wanted to ask where do I include historiography? Do I include it in Part B or Part D? In Part B I'm supposed to use factual knowledge (from sources) that supports my argument/answer to the research question, and in this case I can only use one-sided historiography, if you know what I mean. I can only bring up views of historians who support my argument/answer to the research question (it wouldn't make sense to bring up views of historians who are against my argument/answer to the research question in this section as Part B is factual knowledge that supports my argument/answer). However, m…

I need to write up my History IA and I wanted to explore something to do with the World Wars and so I have decided to do an IA on the extent to which the Treaty of Versailles resulted in the outbreak of the Second World War. I was alerted to the fact that apparently this is a really common topic, is this true? Additionally, is this too broad to do in 2000 words and is it even worth exploring if I aim to achieve the high band of marks. Thanks.

Hi, I have several questions about my HI. First, I'm writing it in French, so does that mean I have to translate all quotes etc. into French? I know to translate the shorter ones, but if I have a longer one, the type that isn't included in the word count, do I have to translate that too? And what about documents in the appendix? Another question about the word count: Do in-text citations and subtitles count? Also, I'm having trouble keeping my word count short in the B section. It has about 900 words now and so the entire thing is about 2300... Any advice for cutting it? Thanks
