Hi everyone. We have a history teacher who is new to IB and is not really sure about what's going on. Unfortunately, our lovely school has failed to provide us with any text books either- and I am planning on buying some abroad when I go for break. What text books are essential, and which books do I need to cover the topics that I need for IB? Desperate.

As far as i know, the Great Leap Forward was equivalent to the Five-Year plans, except the changes were slower after the devastating effects of the 5YP on Russia. My teacher said that the 100 flowers campaign helped Mao regain power when he was pushed to the 'backbench' or out of memory. But i dont really get what happened or how it does this. If i remember correctly i remember students being sent into the countryside to teach and to smash antique items (i may be getting this confused with the 'cultural revolution'. We covered China, but it's a very confusing topic compared to Hitler's Germany or Stalin's Russia. None of my class are really confident with China. Tony

I have been hesitating to post this on the internet, but I feel that I really need the help to just decide my IA topic! My teacher told us to choose the question by the last week of March, and most of my classmates already have a set topic, but me being the indecisive type, I could not settle on just one topic.. I was interested in aspects about Japan and WW2, and wanted to focus on a topic there, but I am not sure if my question is too specific? I have always been very interested in the Asian region for my IA, because my grandparents have personally been through the war. I have researched a fair amount, but most of the research done was on wikipedia, and I have no clue a…

This is probably a really dumb question, but as I'm organizing my HL History of the Americas notes better for easier studying I've been using my syllabus to group my notes by Paper. So I have a divider for Paper 1, Paper 2, and Paper 3 topics. Because I have Math SL Paper 2 and History HL Paper 1 on the same day so I want to know what topics are necessary that I study for that day's History exam. However, I have like a ton of notes of the presidents. At least 2 pages per President from late 1800's to Clinton or George H.W. Bush. The notes are basically on their foreign and domestic policies, major things they did, etc. So I was wondering which Paper those would be tested…

Hi guys. So in our History class last year, where we were supposed to cover units for History Paper 3...we didn't. Now, the exam is coming up really soon and I have no clue where to start studying for Paper 3. Can someone point me to helpful resources online? Also, which topics are the easiest? I think last year we tried to do Civil Rights Movement, Mexican Revolution, and the Civil War era, but nothing really came of it. Thanks!

Hey guys! I have a question concerning the option The Soviet Union and Eastern Europe 1924-2000. Do you know where I can find some notes and what should I focus on while revising it? We don't have a book that would cover these topics precisely. I know that a lot overlaps with Cold War but I still feel like I lack sufficient materials to revise.

Hello guys, I would like to ask if the question asksabout domestic policy does it include economic policy. My teacher says that domestic policy means social policy. But I am confused, because domestic policy I thought meant policies internal to the country so wouldnt that include all policies except foreign policy? In the authoritarian states textbook it includes economic under domestic. I am a bit confused at the conflicting information.

I am a bit stuck with the topic for my History IA. I want to do something like "To what extent was the 1905 a "dress rehearsal" for 1917?" however this seems way too broad. Any ideas of how i could focus it?

Hello, I am writing this to ask for any tips you can think of for revising for the history papers, i have made extensive notes for nearly each topic (i'm continuing these). Although, these notes aren't full revision, because there's too much stuff to remember, some sections have 7 pages. Impossible to revise all the stuff from these. I was going to then look through notes and write revision cards of the main facts/factors to remember for each section. I am also planning to do many past papers, so that answer as a tip isn't needed because i plan to church out practice essays for my teacher to mark so i can improve on them. Thank you, any help is greatly appreciated. Tony

Hi everybody I am having troubles with coming up with a RQ for my historical investigation, and the pressure certainly doesn't decrease with time, as you all probably know. I did choose a topic - I want to write my Historival Investigation on the My Lai massacre, committed by US soldiers during the Vietnam War. What I'm struggling with is, as I said, coming up with a good RQ. Here are some of my ideas 1. Was the My Lai massacre a turning point for the public opinion on the Vietnam War 2. Was the My Lai massacre a turning point for the US soldier's opinion's on the Vietnam War 3.What was the influence of the media coverage of the My Lai massacre on public opinion on…

Hi, I teach history just outside Munich. My site is mostly on remaining Nazi architecture in Germany, but I have thrown in lots of resources for my students over the past decade- past exam questions with student samples hyperlinked: http://www.tracesofevil.com/p/old-ib-history-exam-questions.html Historians and quotes- http://www.tracesofevil.com/p/historians-quotes.html and the links at the bottom provide past EE and IA samples and guides.

Hello all, We have been covering quite a bit in IB history and exams are now a month away. However, I would like to know, what is the minimum I need to know to be able to tackle the exams? - How many wars do I need to know? (How many different regions? Types of wars?) - How many dictators? (Right wing/Left Wing)

Hi, I am a philosophy SL student and I have noticed that all of my IB certified textbooks use BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era) as opposed to the more common BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini). Do any of you know, preferably from experience, if you lose marks or are penalised for using BC/AD in essays or IAs? My personal preference is BC/AD so I would like to know whether I am permitted to use it and why the IB favours one or the other. I remember in MYP I had a teacher who would encourage the class to use BCE/CE and even crossed out BC/AD and replace it with BCE/CE if I ever used it in my essays but I do not know if that was simply my teacher's personal pr…

Hello everybody, I am starting to revise for History and I start with HL topics first since they count for 35% of my final grade. I am done for Post-war Middle East and I have covered for every single point in the syllabus. However, it took me a little over a week. Now I am at Inter-war Years which is harder to understand for me. I have so far covered Weimar Republic and I will defianately cover Hitler and Mussolini. My problem is that I cannot "have more longer time" for each topic since I have other subjects to revise and I want to think strategically instead of revise everything and be completely lost. I think I will skip Spanish Civil War. and perhaps one more topic b…

Is there a specific way to write essays for IB History? Currently I am given 45 minutes to write whatever I want, but no actual structure was ever established besides being required to have at least two body paragraphs, whereas for AP Human Geo and AP World History I was given a set structure for each essay/SAQ.

Is it allowed to answer two questions from the same topic and then the third in an another topic? So you basically could learn two topics well instead of three. I just could not find explicit answer for this.

Hello everyone, I'm doing my EE in History, and my topic is Catherine the Great. My research question is the following: "What personal, political and artistic achievements have helped Catherine of Russian gain the title of "the Great"?" So my EE final draft is due on tuesday. I've finished it (still need to work a little bit on it for it to be absolutely perfect) and I couldn't help but wonder... is my research question to broad? I really want to get bonus points, and I would absolutely HATE to lose points because of my research question. I honestly wouldn't mind rewriting some parts of it... Alright so my current question for my IA is "How did American Mafia in the 1920s impact Medellin Drug Cartel in the 1970s?" And I had fine time finding similarities and differences between the two, but the issue is that that is all my paper is. I can't find any sources talking about any sort of impact that the American Mafia had Medellin Drug Cartel, but they are so similar that it there is no way it wasn't in some way impacted. So my question is what should I do? It is too late in the game to drastically change my question but I'm afraid that writing about the similarities and differences between the two, though I have plenty to write about, is too basic. I need help…

Hi guys, I would like to ask for some help, I am trying to plan different essays for different topics. I am having trouble with the topic comparing the 1905, February 1917 and October 1917 revolutions. The basic idea i have is that 1905 wasnt much of a revolution, more of an outcry for change and some facts, I would include are like the sailors did revolt like at Kronstadt but the army remained loyal and it wasnt organised (and other facts along the same line) The February 1917 revolution i would say isnt organised but more of an outcry as excacerbated by WW1 and poverty and food and fuel shortages and both the army and navy revolted (unlike 1905 where it was only the nav…

Hello there! I'm in the very early stages of planning my historical investigation, and I've heard that you can focus on a particular piece of evidence (e.g. a novel), and its relevance in studying an event/situation. This appeals to me because I love literature, so to combine it with history would be great, but I'm not sure if this is an advisable way of going about the IA? Would it be harder to get a good grade with this approach? I was thinking of doing it on colonialism in Africa, and I thought maybe I could use Heart of Darkness by Conrad as the main focus. I know this is currently pretty vague, but I don't want to get too involved if it won't work. Just looking for…

So im in IB Year 1, and im taking HL History. Naturally, we're doing one semester in this year, and we were assigned an IA, which wont be going to IB, but will be marked by our teacher (practice i guess for next year). As of right now, im debating between investigating the causes of either: 1) the spanish civil war or 2) the chinese civil war. There are lots of topics but i found these to be interesting, and easy in terms of credible sources. However, there is the option to make our very own topic too.. I need help picking one of the two wars (as i really have no greater liking of one over the other) based on any criteria or advise, or make a new topic as a possibility.…

Hi everyone, So I currently have mocks this week but I will study for final exams and not mocks so I know at least I won't cover everything in a short period of time. Just wondering how other May 2014 candidates (particularly those doing Route 2 history) are studying I'm probably not going to study Peacekeeping (i.e. Paper 1) For Paper 2, I'm planning to study causes of WW1, WW2 as well as causes/reasons for failure of the Chinese Civil War and the Origin of Cold War I've looked through 5 years of past papers, and there's always one questions on the causes of war and one on the origin of the cold war. Hi everyone! We've just started our last topic, The Cold War, only it now turns out that our new teacher isn't helping us much with this at all. So far she claims that we've covered the origins of the Cold War, but the entire class is completely at a loss as to what happened! So, I was wondering if anyone has any notes they may be able to send me? They could be regarding the origins or just the Cold War in general. Or, if you would be able to explain some of the causes to me, that would be massively appreciated! Thank you very much!

Hi guys, i would like to ask if anyone knows the dates that Mikhail Reutern was finance minister for Tsarist Russia. Hi everyone! I'm a senior and currently I'm rewriting my historical investigation. I'm trying to write about Ernst Reuter's (mayor of Berlin) role in the Berlin airlift. Our teacher is not very helpful and I don't know if my question is focused our even appropriate at all. Hi everyone! Before sitting down to do some revision today I decided to have a look through the forums to look for any revision tips, and I came across quite a lot of people saying historiography is quite important for the good grades. Now, I've never heard of this before, but it does sound like a very good idea! So I was wondering if anyone could recommend any further reading/good examples of historians that I could have a look at for the topics: Origin & Development of Single Party States The Cold War 1945-1990 Peacemaking, Peacekeeping & International Relations 1918-1935 I don't really know where to start so some suggestions would be much appreciated!

When doing Paper 2 and 3, is it a must to add historian's quotes and arguments? IF SO, then how would you go about incorporating historiography into the exam essay? I mean it's pretty hard remembering these quotes in the first place so would you have to make sure `that it is word for word or is paraphrasing okay?
