Hello! I would be extremely grateful if you could take the time to read my essay and tell me if it's good or bad and what there is to improve. I really need a 7 for this, so don't hold back any constructive critiques. There is not enough space here to express my thankfulness. The question is: To what extent was the Cold War caused by Truman's policies? Harry S. Truman became President of the United States on 12 April 1945, following the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt, amidst profound concern about his capacity for national or world leadership. Still today some blame him for starting the Cold War, while others say he had 'saved western civilisation' from Soviet aggressi…

so im writing an extended essay and ive based it on Germany's elections in 1918 after the great war. my supervisor is not being very helpful for he hasn't replied to any of my email since the start of this project, nor has he set meetings, hes just bad at this. so here my question: to what extent were tactics of suppression and unrest used during the first post war election of Germany in 1918, how did this affect the outcome of the elections along with the reforms in government and Germany's involvement in international affairs? i would like your guys' advice on this topic, whether its advice on the question or how to re-write it with more focus and or better terms…

Hello! I need to start research for my IA soon. One of the cool things I learned I could do with this assignment is compare a movie and a written account, so for my topic I came up with: How accurately does Barefoot Gen portray the devastation caused by the Hiroshima nuclear bombing? Can anyone recommend a good read that gives accounts of the Hiroshima residents that survived and/or were witnesses to the effects of the bombing? Also, I hope the fact that the film is animated doesn't mess things up. It's historical fiction, so I wouldn't think so, but just to be sure..... Thanks a bunch!

I am currently doing my history IA, except the problem is that my research question is too broad. As of the moment, my RQ is "to what extent can we be sure of the authenticity of the Nanjing Massacre?" I personally think that if I hand up my investigation as it stands, it will be one of the examples IB put in their guide as "what not to do" Currently I have several RQs a) To what extent is Japanese Nationalism important as a catalyst of the Nanjing Massacre? b) to what extent is the Nanjing Massacre a reflection of breakdown in Japanese military? c) To what extent is the Nanjing Massacre a propaganda fabricated by the GMD/CCP? (the obvious answer is: yes to an…

I'm trying write my history IA on the idea of America's permanent war time economy. More specifically, the military industrial complex based off of President Eisenhower's farewell address. I was thinking of a question like "To what extent did America's role in world war 2 and the cold war lead to a permanent war time economy?" Anyways, I need some suggestions on the idea and maybe some ways to tackle it.

So I received my first ever written History essay this year, the question as I remembered were phrased as "What factors contributed to Hitler's rise to power in 1933". I didn't do as well as I expected myself to. I was expecting myself to get around 13-15/20 instead I got 11/20, is this a good or bad thing?

So I have to write my year one History IA and I don't know what topic to choose. I did an IA on Student Protests in America during the Vietnam War and how they affected American public opinion but I don't know what to do this year. Loads of people recommended anything on Fidel Castro, Vietnam War, and Soviet Union (Cold War) stuff but I can't decide on what to do that's informative yet original enough. I know that I don't want to do anything that's overdone. Help please?

I've been looking at the HL Markscheme for History and I notice that the easiest additional element to incorporate in an essay would be to "show a high level of conceptual ability." Alright, now may I ask you all dearly, what is this conceptual ability? Can I get some examples? My teacher tells me that I ought to think in frameworks but I don't really understand what he means. My exams are in May 2015 and we're going to start doing daily essays in two months or so and I am scared that I will not do so well because I know all my facts but when the time comes understanding the criteria I think will get me closer to higher mark boundaries, I tend to get 14/20 for my essays b…

Hello, i'm trying to find a good topic to get research for my HI, but I can't figure out what would be a best question for my topic. I tried doing prohibition, but I heard people who did prohibition didn't do well in my school.. Therefore I decided to do something related to the French Revolution or Napoleon, but I need a "controversy" with the question. I came up with this: • To what extent was Napoleon seen as a dictator rather than a hero of France? • To what extent was Napoleon influential for other revolutions that occurred? • ???

I'm trying to narrow my IA topic down. My starting research question was: To what extend was Hitler's attempt at Lebensraum successful? That's super broad and general, I know :/ I've narrowed it down to: To what extent were the Germans and Poles' relationship affected as a result of Hitler's Lebensraum policy? I'm still working on the wording but basically I would go in to talk about all the factors that impact the relationship between the two I was just hoping to get some feedback and maybe critiquing of my topic. I'm worried that this isn't the best way to go, that I won't be able to get enough research to succeed, and that I could do better with something else …

Hello everyone! I have different ideas and different approaches for my history internal assessment, but i cant seem make it acceptable, nonetheless, my topic is on the cuban revolution and Che Guevara. My first approach: To what extend have che guevaras decisions as leader positively and negatively affected the procedure of the surprise attack at altos de espinosa? (i would compare and contract historical views, unfortunately i cant find any information of historical debate on this battle) My second approach: medias representation of che, biased opinion about che guevara, how they (americans- 1950) portrayed him and compare it to historical truth. To what extend has…

Hello, I need to start research on my IA topic, but before I do, I want to gather some opinions about my topic question. "To what extent can drugs be considered the main reason for Vietnam veterans having difficulty reintegrating themselves into society?" I've heard about this problem a bit, and I also know that there's a number of conflicting opinions on drug use in Vietnam, so I believe this would make a good topic, however I want to know if this question would be a good one.

Hi guys! As the time has come and in a few days I will be starting my IB course I just wondered if you find it vital to buy some additional history books in order to manage well with History HL course as I have seen many offers from the former IB students encouraging to buy some books that are not actually course books, like "Mastering Modern World History (...)" and so on... What would you say? And if yes, would somebody be so king and make a list of books that may come in handy to cope with all History HL stuff? I would greatly appreciate it.

Hi, I'm starting school soon, and the one subject that I'm most scared about is HL History. I don't enjoy the subject at all, and have horrible memory. So obviously, none of those things are going to help me succeed in HL history. I was wondering what I should expect in HL history. Debates? Essays (oh I know about the essays...)? Presentations? Etc etc. Also, if any of you have any tips for succeeding well in HL History (especially with a terrible memory), I would be so grateful for them. Thanks!

Hi, So IAs are coming up, and I really need to choose a topic. I've come up with a few already, like I'm really interested in feminism, and I was thinking perhaps something to do with Barbies. I've spoken with my supervisor already, but he says that I should give him a more focused topic idea. I was thinking about how Barbies have evolved from back then to now, and how Barbie represents her own woman who has taken up these fantastic roles and jobs that woman today still haven't been able to do. (President) But it's not exactly a question, and I'm not really connecting the dots here. If this isn't a solid enough idea, I think I'd do something along the lines of "How has W…

Hey guys so I am assigned my first ever, IB research essay. Our prompt is this: Explain clearly and concisely one of the primary causes for the specifics of WWI and how the cause was crucial in starting the WWI. Please give specifics and extend beyond what the book states. One cause, and research it. Seems simple ya? Nah. The cause I picked is solidly on nationalism but it is such a broad topic. I'm starting from the time of Otto van Bismarck unifying German kingdoms and Prussia and I have already gone too deep with that one event in research and I feel it's trailing away from a direct explanation on how nationalism caused WWI. Any tips on or example essays you may have…

Hi everybody! I'd like to apologize first because my mother tongue is French, so I may have some mistakes in my text. I'm working on my extended essay and my question would be the following: "To what extent did the debates between Federalists and Anti-Federalists influence the question of bearing arms in the United States between 1787 and 1791?" My first question is: do you think the words "question of bearing arms" is too general for an extended essay? Also, I'm not sure if my plan is right. Hello, I was wondering exactly how difficult is it to achieve a 7, which is what I'm aiming for, in HL History Route 2? I've heard that it's extremely difficult, as about only 2% of the people who take the course achieve a 7. If that's true then shouldn't it be almost impossible, because considering the amount of people who take the course, and out of those only 2 or so percent achieve a 7. If someone could shine some light on this issue that'd be great. Thanks.

Hi, everybody, I just came up with a thesis question for my historical investigation. That is "was the new established Turkish Republic a democracy?" My problem is, I'm not so sure if it sounds more ideological than scientific. But I have a variety of resources, both historical texts such as memoirs of relevant people, and history books. Soo what would you propose? Do you think is it okay? Maybe I am having a hard time because in a non-IB school in Turkey I would get a zero from a homework with such a title.

I've studied a little history under social studies, and didn't do it for my GCSEs. A lot of people have told me History is too much work if I haven't done it as a serious subject prior to IB. I'm still convinced history is my best choice, because I've studied economics and while I enjoyed it, it's not really for me. And a lot of geo seems similar to it. I like the freshness of history and find the course most interesting. So what do I need to know about taking the subject? As a completely ab. initio student.

Well, one thing I'm constantly told by my teacher in history is that for Paper 1 and Paper 2, scoring a historiography in your essay is the difference between a 6 and a 7. Now while I get bucket loads of facts about a certain topic or event, it gets really difficult to get historians' view on the topic. Can someone tell me exactly how do you get your historiography?

Hey guys, So I wanted to do my History IA on 9/11 conspiracy theories, which counts as a piece of history due to it being 10 years ago now. My first question was about how evidence "supports or refutes the belief of conspiracy theories in 9/11", but my History teacher told me the question was problematic, and that my draft was pretty bad, and instead I should make it "What evidence points towards US Government complicity in the 9/11 attacks?" I want to know if this is worth trying, or if I should just scrap it and start again. I'm starting to get a wee bit stressed out as the IA is due in in two weeks!!
