'Examine' Questions
by Guest- 1 reply

Hey all, I have midyears coming up (on Monday, actually) and we got told our History question beforehand to ease us into it. We're doing the 'question' "Examine the successes and failures of collective security in the first ten years following the First World War" (paraphrased, I believe, as I can't remember it exactly). I'm relatively okay with all of it, but I was wondering, how do you make a thesis for this sort of statement? There's not much to, in a sense, be argued here, I assume, so what would we put into the introduction to make the entire essay relevant? I hope this makes sense! Any help is appreciated - thanks in advance!

To what extent is the rise of socialism a cause of World War 1 and 2? I am asked to make a presentation about this and right now I have no idea on how to answer this question.

Our teacher never told us we were supposed to know historians' views on topics to quote. So i have no historians in mind that i could use, all of my essay would just be my own knowledge. What happens if i dont include any of that? I've seen people say that historiography (?) is really important for essays, and quoting historians and their views. But i mean, most of my knowledge comes from CrashCourse, i doubt i can quote John Green as a historian.

So our school recommends that we buy the Pearson IB History textbooks for paper 1, 2, 3. But the thing is, our teacher doesn't teach much, so I rely on the textbook which explains each area that is tested on the exam. Is reading the textbook enough or can you never do well if you virtually only read the textbook? (+ a little bit of online reading for facts, dates) Thanks everyone for any replies!

Hello ! Does someone know what the November 2014 questions were about? I'm searching for the questions in: -Paper 1 : Communism in crisis --> I know it was on China and not USSR, but what part exactly? Economy, political or rise to power? -Paper 2 : Topic 3 (Single Party States) and Topic 5 (Cold War) --> What questions were asked about Stalin or Mao on Topic 3? And on Topic 5 what questions were for origins and end of the cold war? If you do have these past papers please PM them please !! If you sat the exam can you (try to) answer my questions ? Hopefully you remember...

I have a problem with getting more than 10 out of 20 in the cold war essay in paper 2. Although I got 13 in the other essay in paper 2, and 16, 15, 13 in paper 3. I feel that the questions require detailed knowledge and the book we used do not provide enough detailed knowledge, it gives general knowledge about the cold war. The question, do you know any websites or books, which can help to prepare for exam? or do you have any tips on how to prepare for paper 2 ?

I've been looking around for history essay writing tips, and almost all of them suggest the writer to challenge the question or at least acknowledge any counterarguments. However, when it came to when the question should be challenged, there were many disagreements. Some advises challenging the question in the body paragraphs, while others state that it should be done in the conclusion. Which option do you think is better? Thanks for the help

Hey guys, My teacher just posted this question, that we have to write a paper on: "Why did the revolutionaries win in the Spanish Civil War and in the Algerian War 1954-62?" But then she wants us to compare and contrast. I've only ever compared and contrasted sources before, so I'm unsure of how to tackle this assignment. Do I need to provide sources? Do I need to first explain why the Nationalists won in the Spanish Civil War, secondly why FLN won in the Algerian war, and then compare and contrast the two wins? Any help will be greatly appreciated, thank you!

I am doing research about the soviet-afghanistan war and I have sort of problem to finalize my question. Currently my question is "To what extend did Amin's actions pushed Soviet Union for military intervention." I want to write about Amin, but I have problem to form a question that would deal with him. For this question that I have now, it sounds weak as his actions completely caused the Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions where I could go with Amin and his role in the starting the war. Thanks EDIT: is anybody here? EDIT2: I would greatly appreciate any suggestions

Hey there! - This is preeetty important because I've done my whole summary of evidence in a Table format. I am investigating to what extent the counterculture movement of the 1960s (the hippies) changed the role of American women, so I've done a table comparing different statistics and facts about the role of women before the movement, during the movement, and after the movement I've now been told that it may not be a valid format and it is due very soon so I am panicking a little bit Thank you

My topic that I would like to focus on for the history IA is the Rwandan Genocide in 1994. So far, my question is... What caused the tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi ethnic groups in Rwanda in the early 1990’s to increase and lead to genocide? I'm afraid that it is too broad and the answer can easily be found in the textbook. (Teacher said not to ask a question that can be easily answered by reading a textbook)... Can anyone suggest any improvements that I could make? And how specific is too specific?

I am reviewing Topic 3 for history and I have come to ask myself about whether or not Lenin is an acceptable ruler for paper 2. That is, if asked to compare two rulers from two different regions, for example, would I be able to use Lenin as one of them? I am asking this question because I have noticed that he is not a part of the "material for detailed study" in the syllabus, but I have noticed that he has been mentioned in past exams.

I'm not doing the actual IB diploma yet, I'm kind of in a prep year in my school, and we're doing a mini IA in history class just for trials. I was wondering, is this a good research question? Is it too narrow? "An investigation into the Italian Unification: How significant was Garibaldi’s role and actions in leading to the success of the Italian unification from 1815 to 1871?" Thanks!

Hi all this is my first time posting to IB survival, but since I've found the site helpful in the past I thought I'd ask for help from here... So, I'm an IB1 student currently working on my Historical Investigation (Our deadline for this is May 24th), and my research question is going to be something along the lines of "Why did the women's suffrage -movement in the U.K. turn to more violent methods to obtain the enfranchisement after the turn of the 20th century?". What do you think of the question? My teacher says the topic is suitable but I'm worried that I won't get enough out of it. (I would be focusing on the Suffragettes specifically, so not going to the Suffragi…

A new IB history syllabus is released for 1st teaching in 2015 and 1st exam in 2017. The most significant change is that routes 1 & 2 in the old syllabus are combined into one single syllabus, so there are as many as 5 prescribed subject, 12 paper 2 topics and for each HL option there will be 18 sections. So the new syllabus seems to provide even more choices and is more flexible. Yet most contents in the old syllabus route 2 are retained in the new syllabus except for the prescribed subjects. A link to the new syllabus can be found at: https://ibpublishing.ibo.org/server2/rest/app/tsm.xql?doc=d_3_histx_gui_1501_1_e∂=1&chapter=1 What do you think about it?

OK so i have this question: How did the absence of American television network with access to a satellite stopped the development of the Cuban Missile Crisis into WWIII?Feel freely to change the question and can you help me choose some resources for it? Background: As Michael Richard Beschloss(American historian) said:"an American television network with access to a private satellite might well have discovered the missiles and announced them to the world only hours after the President had learned about them" so this would lead to panic among the American citizens, and in the public outcry and debate it might be difficult for the president to choose a more moderate opti…

Hey! I'm supposed to be starting my extended essay soon (I'm in my first year of the IB diploma), and I want to somehow compare Stalin and Hitler. Hey everyone, I'm writing my history IA on the following question: To what extent did economic policies such as Roosevelt’s New Deal allow the United States to become a "superpower" after World War II? Now, I (think) I'm starting my time period in 1932/1933 (roosevelt takes office, new deal, respectively). However, im not sure if I should end my time period in 1945, when WWII ends and the US GDP has grown a lot due to a lot of wartime production...because it seems there is a lot of evidence talking about a strong post-war economy from 1945-1960. so in summary: A. Does it make more sense to go from 1932 to 1945, ending with WWII and higher GDP? New Deal, etc B. Doe…

I would like to do my IA on the long term effects of WWII on children (mental, physical health etc.). My grandmother was alive during the war and talks about her experiences and the way her family lived during the war. I have the opportunity to ask her some questions and I have found a fair amount of sources relating to this topic. Is this an acceptable topic for a history IA? I have a ways to go with my RQ and all but want some feedback before I jump in. I'm not sure about it...I know you can't really put ideas into my head and what I come up with must be my own but I would really appreciate some advice!

I'm writing up an essay for class where the title is "Why did a general European War break out in 1914?" My thesis statement is as follows : During the time prior to August 1914, a build up of tensions between the European power blocs eventually led to the outbreak of a total war. It can be argued that events such as the July Crisis, unrest in the Balkans as well as mobilization directly led to these already present tensions resulting in war. I'm really not sure if I've approached the question correctly in terms of whether I should focus on the long-term or short-term causes so so any help would be great.
