  1. Hey all, I've been having a lot of trouble writing the 45 minute essays that are assigned in HL History (year 1). Does anyone have any tips or strategies, or possibly well written exemplars, that I could use to improve my style of writing? I think I end up giving too much narrative and not giving as strong of an argument as I should be, but any help is appreciated. Thanks!
  2. Hello Very random but I recently was asked this exact question by one of my friends! I answered Hannah Arendt, Rosa Luxemburg and Einstein but there are so many more interesting figures I would like to meet if I had the chance.. What would your top three be?
  3. Dear fellow IB history students My initial History IA research question is "How did China affect Korea by getting involved in the Korean War"? However, I find it very difficult to answer this question, so I've changed the research question to "How deeply(To what extent) was the USA involved in the Korean War?" I just wanted to know whether or not this research question has an error. Best regards

  5. I know that the essay is suppose to be Intro Thesis statement argument 1 argument 2 argument 3 (continue till you are happy with the number of arguments) conclusion However, my question is mainly centered around the body part, how should they be formatted? Should it be in terms of for example, Lets say I'm arguing that causes and effects of the Mexican-American war (I'm not doing this but just an example) Would for example I follow this way for each argument? Point:
  6. My EE RQ is due soon and my question so far is "To what extent did WWII lead to the decolonization of India?" But I've been told that's not specific enough. Can someone help making it more specific? I thought of "To what extent did WWII lead to the British Decolonization of India by 1947?" But I dont know.
  7. Hey guys I'm doing a history EE on the south african apartheid, my question is already approved and I have some points to talk about I just want to know if they are good/if I forgot anything import To what extent was Nelson Mandela responsible for the transition from apartheid to democracy in South Africa by 1995? Although Nelson Mandela served a profound impact in the process of transitioning apartheid to democracy, other factors played an equal if not more profound role in the transition. Other Factors I'll talk about: During the 1980 sustained protests,
  8. Heyy I'm currently searching for possible topics for my history IA and I am supposed to hand in a possible leading question very soon. However, somehow I have not yet been able to decide on a specific topic. I have several possible question, but am not quite sure yet whether they are suitable. The questions are: In how far was the threat from Western Imperialism the primary cause for the Meiji restoration in 1868? To what extend did the Meiji restoration succeed in improving equality in Japan's social system? To what extend did the Matchgirl's strike of 1888 have a signif
  9. Hello, For long story short, I'm currently trying to come up with an EE question. I really would like to do something on the feminist movement in the 60s, but I don't really know how to formulate a question. For some extra context, I was maybe going to try to focus specifically on the reproductive rights aspect of the feminist movement (ex. increased access to birth control, abortion, etc.) but I don't know if focusing on an aspect like that would make my essay too narrow? If anyone could help that would be really appreciated because as I'm standing now i'm stuck at a roadblock.
  10. it's already mid-august, and i haven't gotten much done (if anything) for my history ee. i am focusing on the vietnam war; my question is "to what extent was the ho chi minh trail a significant factor to the victory of north vietnam" i've been looking up articles and such for debates and different perspectives, but maybe i haven't been searching hard enough because there is practically nothing that satisfies my question, which has started to make me more and more anxious about completing the ee. i can't get a hold of my supervisor to help me narrow down my question and guide my quest
  11. Are there any History books that focus solely on Mao's Hundred Flowers campaign? Most of the books that I have concentrate on a huge period of China's history, but I only really need to read about this one event.
  12. Hey Guys! I need some help narrowing down my question on the salem witch trial! Here's the research question: How did the Salem witch trials reflect the Americans' point of view on gender and power in the 17th century in the US? I am worried it's a bit too broad and I may have some difficulty exploring every aspect of it. What would you guys recommend? Thank you
  13. I need some urgent guidance regarding my IB subject choices for next year!!! This is what I've entered; English Lit A HL Economics HL History HL Maths SL Environmental systems and societies SL Mandarin ab initio SL However, I still have the opportunity to make changes so I thought I'd ask for some thoughts on them before I finalise. First of all - do they seem optimal for law at Russel Group/Ivy Leauge unis? English Lit, Economics, Maths and Mandarin are more or less definite so I am left with two concerns; I am considering swapping out History HL to G
  14. I need some help deciding on my group 3. My school only offers History HL and Psychology HL, so I'm basically being forced to sacrifice one of my HL's to group 3. I'm interested in both, I like learning about history, and I also find Psychology fascinating. Ultimately, the deciding factor for my will be the IA. Which IA is easier? The IA for History HL or Psychology HL? Also workload and what you do in the class. Is there more work in History HL or Psychology HL? What kind of work
  15. Hello, I am going to start writing my IA for History, but I am stuck with making a proper question. I know that my topic will be the Indian Partition. I have a few potential questions, but they don't exactly sound right to me. Please let me know how I can fix them/ if they are too broad. Thank you very much. 1.) To what extent was the Partition of India caused by British authority? 2.) To what extent was the Partition of India inevitable? 3.) To what extent was the Indian Partition caused by Hindu-Muslim conflict?

Hi, So IAs are coming up, and I really need to choose a topic. I've come up with a few already, like I'm really interested in feminism, and I was thinking perhaps something to do with Barbies. I've spoken with my supervisor already, but he says that I should give him a more focused topic idea. I was thinking about how Barbies have evolved from back then to now, and how Barbie represents her own woman who has taken up these fantastic roles and jobs that woman today still haven't been able to do. (President) But it's not exactly a question, and I'm not really connecting the dots here. If this i
  17. I've been deciding over the type of topics that I should write my EE on and the following are just some that came up my mind: Events related to Japanese Expansionism Rape of Nanking Events related to China/ Asia Are there any suggestions about these topics (or suggestions about any other topics related to Asia?) and will it be hard to find sources if I write my EE on Chinese history (1900s)? Thx guys :'))
  18. I want to do my EE in History about the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Maybe look into the international response, or compare two responses (e.g. China's vs Britain's). I don't know how to formulate a RQ tho, and I'm also a bit lost regarding the analysis part - I don't think I have one yet. Possibly which response was more crucial..? Any help/ideas would be very much appreciated!!
  19. I need help choosing a Research Question for my History IA topic. So far I have brainstormed the following: - To what extent was Stalin's First 5 Year Plan successful? - To what extent was the Stalin's First 5 Year Plan motivated by political/economic/ideological reasons? ( I will choose one of the factors) - To what extent were the methods employed in Stalin's First 5 Year Plan successful in meeting its aims? - To what extent was collectivisation successful in increasing the industrial output/meeting the aims of Stalin's First 5 Year Plan? - To what extent was the Mar
  20. Hello, I was wondering if historical interpretations and direct quotations of historians are essential in an essay (paper 2 and 3) for an "evaluation of different perspectives". Sometimes I find it hard to find historical interpretations for everything (plus, do you know how I can find them more easily if they are not in the textbooks?) Thank you in advance!
  21. Hi all, I have decided to write my EE in History and I'd love to know your opinion on whether the analysis of the accuracy of a historical movie is a valid History EE topic. To be more precise, I'd like to analyse the historical accuracy of "Schindler's List". Any tips highly appreciated:)
  22. Hi everyone, I am researching for my history EE, and I am having troubles with finding the evidence for an event. The event consists in a conversation between the king and Mussolini, which is mentioned in multiple books but without any reference to a primary source, but always to other secondary sources (other historians' books ) or no reference at all. My supervisor was bemoaning this, however it seems fair that there is no "transcript" of a private conversation. Is it common\acceptable? How can I back this event better? Thank you in advance
  23. Hello! I am a rising 11th grader and initially selected the courses: HL History, HL Geography, HL English LL, SL Spanish LL, SL Biology, and SL Math Applications and Interpretation. I am considering to switch from HL Geography to HL Biology, and change to SL Math Analysis. However, I would then have two very content heavy HL courses (Bio and History), which I have heard very bad things about. How do-able is it to do these courses together? Could someone also provide feedback on the new maths courses? While I heard that universities do not care which one you pick unless you study a mathema
  24. Hey, I was really confused about how I should start my IA and about the research involved. Can someone please help me? My research question is "To what extent was Hitler's economic policies helpful in revitalizing the German economy from 1933 to 1941?". Thanks, Payas
  25. My History IA question is something along the lines of "TWE were Hitler's expansionist policies a response to the border changes imposed by the Treaty of Versailles." I obviously have to find two sources to analyse on this. If anyone knows of any short-ish (25 pgs or under) sources (either primary or secondary) which discuss this I would be incredibly grateful! Thank you in advance x
