Is it okay to copy and paste some bits of info from books/websites into my IA but reference them all correctly with the right sources? I feel like half of my IA is just copy and pasted because they put so much significance into the sources you use in the IA. Im kind of confused :-\

So, for my history syllabus, my teacher has chosen for us to do causes, practices and effects of war, among others. But, we are only learning about the causes of war... is this something that any of your teachers have done as well? As in, have they just chosen one of the three (causes, practices, effects) Thanks

I have been struggling over this DBQ essay homework for the past several days. The question is "Discuss how the events and aftermath of World War I created the political, social, and economic conditions that led to World War II." I have several issues with this assignment. 1.)--My AP book mentioned showing "subtlety and nuance" in the thesis. J--just what does this mean, exactly??? Ō_Ó 2.)--Maybe I'm too literal, but I'm afraid of brining up events that actually occured DURING "the Great War", when the earliest document in my DBQ is dated 1919. Can it be done? How? 3.)--It seems like a lot of the economic, political, and social troubles happened all in Germany, what with …

Hey guys, so I was going to write my EE in history over the topic of what tactics the Nazis used to prevent Jews from fighting back against them however the few uprisings there were contradicted my question so I thought of making it into a 'To what extent...' question but realized the Holocaust IS overdone. As I was researching new topics for history I came across the Hama massacre and thought of writing my EE on that, my question being 'To what extent was the Syrian Army taking advantage of their power' or something along those lines. I could really use your opinions on this topic and any help anybody could give, I know my question isn't great but it's just a start!

So I've been trying to narrow down my IA topic for a while now, and I've changed my question approximately five times. I've done a lot of research, and I feel like the best option is in American second wave feminism. I want to analyse The Feminine Mystique and its effects on the feminist movement (obviously it will become more specific), but I don't know whether looking at the impacts of a book is acceptable to write for an IB paper. My school's history department is no help, especially with this topic, so does anyone know whether the topic is feasable or not?

Hey guys, I have been looking around on mark schemes as well as some of the posts here about how "challenging" an IB question, such as "State the conditions that brought Hitler to power" (which can be challenged by saying that it was not the conditions but the methods that brought Hitler in power), you have greater chances at the 17-20 markband. However, could anyone give me a few tips on how to organise a challenge essay? Do I just challenge the question in the introduction and present evidence supporting it. Or do I continue with the question and challenge it in the conclusion or a body paragraph. Also, if anyone has any example of an IB essay that was challenged succe…

Hi! So I have basically written up the first draft of my IA and the final one is due in a week. My topic is on the Vietnam War, and I am arguing that Truman and Eisenhower were responsible for American intervention in the War (rather than Kennedy and Johnson, who most people blame). I'm basically asking, to what extent were they responsible? In Part B, I summarized my evidence.... and in part D, I tried to point out the mistakes or signs that the two made (introduced in part B) that suggest they're the ones responsible. My teacher said that most of what I said in part D is a repeat of part B, so now I'm kind of lost as to how to approach this part. How exactly do you anal…

I was doing a IA investigation about planes in WW2 but my teacher says that my topic wasn´t viable for an historic investigation. So a need a new question. I was thinking on this one. To what extent the project Apolo of the NASA was an economic driver for the United States? Could this be viable to work for a IA? (I´m in HL). Thanks for your help. -Arturo

I'm a junior in IB History HL and for the past school year, I've been doing okay on my History Paper Three's (13-15). But, I want to know what keeps me from getting somewhat higher marks. My history teacher has told my class about the opposing historians, but does that mean specific, real historians or hypothetical historians? And what is historiography? I know I should probably know what it means by now, but looking it up on the internet doesn't seem to help? And how often should I offer my critical commentary? Any tips? Sorry for asking so much, but I simply want to know how to improve. Thank you guys so much!

Does anybody have any kind of revision material on Nyerere's rise to power? He is valuable to know for paper 2 topic 3, but all that I can find in my textbooks are limited notes on his policies and his consolidation of power. I'd appreciate if anybody could tell me anything specific that can be used as a strong argument in his contrast to, for example Hitler or Stalin (even Mao)?

Hey! So for my history IA my topic was: To what extent did FDR's New Deal end the Great Depression? However, as I'm doing my research I keep finding that this is more of an economic topic? What do you guys think? I thought about exploring other new deal topics maybe- such as what impact did it have on African Americans or something about the social policies in the new deal and the impact of them...? Any advice? Thanks guys (:

which of these two questions do you think would do better on an IA, and in which ways can I improve the structure of these questions? Q 1: To what extent was the bombing of Pearl Harbor necessary for Japan to expand and maintain territory in the Pacific War? Q 2: Did the bombing of Pearl Harbor do more to help or hinder Japan in the Pacific War? Thank you for assisting me, ---An IB Student

In my IA I have formulated a question "to what extent was emperor hirohito a deciding factor in the bombing of pearl harbor?" However I now realize that there is not much information on this topic. If possible I would like some more ideas on more scources to try or another topic dealing with japan. I have already done extensive research however I can not seem to formulate a decent question. I would also like to do "to what extent did the development of hiragana affect the role of women" but that does not seem to have many sources. I would like to potentially do a feminist topic. A topic I consider is something like "the rise of prostitution(or sex industry) in japan " ,…

Hello, i have been making some fact files on each of the Tsars mentioned above. I currently have finished the one on Alex 2nd. However i'm having great difficulty getting any depth on Alex 3rd, i don't know about Nicholas 2nd as i haven't moved onto him yet. I was wondering if anyone had notes i could use to help add to mine or website recommendations. I need more depth of notes, "reversing Alex 2nd's policies" isn't enough and what i have got is so basic i couldnt write an essay on it, which i will be doing on Friday. But i was wondering if anyone could help I am looking for specific details on different policies of Alex 3rd and Nicholas 2nd if you are aware of any. But…

Hi All, I found out I was registered last year for Peacekeeping-peacemaking by my school to the IBO instead of Arab-Israeli conflict (paper 1). This completely goes against what we 'agreed' upon last year and I always thought the option for Arab-Israeli was open. I really cannot do Peacekeeping as I was totally prepared and been practicing for the Israeli-Arab conflict and am now panicking. My teacher said "there is no way you can do the Arab-Israeli conflict now as you were registered as peacekeeping to the IB". He said also said that because of that only peacekeeping/peacemaking papers will be sent to my school in May. Is there anyway to change this?

Hello! By the end of next week we are required to hand in a research question for our Historical Investigation. The topic I have chosen is the Iraq-Iran war / as well as the Iranian revolution. I tried to connect those in my research question and thought about how significant the Iranian revolution was as a cause for the outbreak of the war or the war as whole; I am interested in this topic, my only concern is if this research question is too broad.. What do you think? Suggestions and tips are appreciated!

My topic for my historical investigation in the defection of Igor Gouzenko- a Soviet cipher clerk who worked at the Soviet Embassy in Canada during the mid 1940's. I am looking for help/ideas for generating a research question from this topic. I was going to look into his motives for defecting but my history teacher told me this would probably not involve enough investigation. He recommended looking into the effects of the defection but I am having trouble narrowing this down to a research question. All comments/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hello! I am an IB student (certainly) and I recently registered on "ibsurvival" after several recommendations from my classmates. So I am typing this with regards to the historical investigation.. History is one of my HL subjects as well as one of my favorite ones. Our research questions needs to be chosen by the beginning of February, personally, I have decided the topic (not the research question). I have chosen to write my IA about the Iranian revolution 1979. My concern right now is to find suitable sources about the Iranian revolution as well as of course to decide a research question. I would really appreciate it if some experienced people (particularly in this to…

HI~ I'm in HL History and for my IA, I'm having trouble getting a solid question for my topic and creating a focus that it is not too broad or too narrow. My topic is how Quebec, during World War I, resisted recruitment as they felt they didn't hold enough obligation to help Britain (as they were French-Canadian). This led to the Conscription Crisis of 1917 in Quebec. I'm trying to tie how this lack of recruitment and resentment from the Quebecians in World War I affected the contribution Canada was able to give in World War II. It also caused another Conscription Crisis in 1944. I'm having trouble deciding on which aspect I should focus on and if it would be too narrow t…

Hi One of my sources for section C of the IA is a thesis, written by an academic historian at a university in Sweden. So far, I've said that it is not specificlly focused on my RQ (and thus leaves out details), and that even though it is a thesis from a uni, it is possible it has been influenced by the social democratic rule in Sweden (it is a book on the socail demoracy party 1880-1910). I've discussed it with my teacher who said that because it is a book from a uni, it is less likely to be baised in such a way. It's also really hard to find flaws in an academic historian's work, at least when we're still only in high school... However, I do need to find some limitati…

For my mock IA, I have chosen this book by Robert K. Massie among other sources, and in Part C, I have to evaluate it as a source. The only thing I could think of was that Massie did not live during the rule of Nicholas and so he can only make assumptions, but my teacher said it is wrong. Anybody can suggest a limitation to this source? I would be grateful

Hello, I'm writing to ask for your guys opinion on my HI topic. Beforehand it was too broad and I was told to extremely narrow it down. Right now it is "To what extent was it necessary for USA to launch A-bomb to defeat Japan in the Pacific War?" Since my topic circles around Pacific War, from previous work I have gathered information on Japan's reasons to attack USA, then USA's counter-reaction, and then the whole A-bomb ordeal. I find it the most fitting to choose the aforementioned topic as it would require the least editing for part B, summary of evidence. My classmate told me it is impossible to measure to what extent did USA need to do that, but I kind of have some …

So for our class (taught at HL level, don't decide till next year) we will be doing our internal assessments in January, when we come back from winter break. Before that, however, we have to find a couple interesting historical debates. We are allowed to use any time period (so ancient to 2002) and I want to find something interesting to do. I love history, but its hard finding something that's unique. I don't wanna do anything we are learning Post-Napoleon or American History. I know a decent bit about British and Chinese history, but I can't think of any historical debates from those times. If you guys are aware of anything that I could look into, that'd be awesome. Tha…

For my History of the Americas Paper 3, I received a topic concerning Canada and it's world relations. This will be my first IB paper and I'm just a little worried as I've always considered myself an average writer. Is it acceptable to start off my introduction with somewhat of a joke or is it frowned upon and supposed to be a serious paper from beginning to end? My teacher didn't explain much or give a rubric so I'm freaking out a bit.

Can someone explain the difference, because I thought these were basically the same. I was looking at the University of Arkansas and they require four years of History and 2 years of Social Studies. The IB kids at my school take 9th - AP World History 10th - AP European History 11th - AP U.S. History 12th - IB Contemporary History Our IB coordinator has done everything (and then some) to make sure we have the credits needed to graduate with the IB diploma so I was wondering if these courses would double as social studies or if I wouldn't be able to go to that college.

This was due on Wednesday, and the teacher checked them and handed them back, but I did not do well...
