Sooner or later, am going to have to embark on the painstaking journey of writing my era on schema theory. I'm in IB1 if that makes a difference at all. In any case, we've been given a rough template, that isn't IB prescribed, and i know that the era will be marked by some IB scheme, but I'm still a little lost as to how to go about structuring the ERA'S! any guidelines or such thingo's that might help to structure and compile the report?greatly appreicated!ciao

I believe I can use things I've learned from the options to answer to Paper 1 questions? Now suppose they'll ask about emic & etic concepts. Could I use Buss (1994), a large cross-cultural study with 10000 participants, as an example of an etic kind of study (as the study discovered things almost universally common in choosing a partner), though that study is not related to the Core of the programme, but HUman relationships instead? I think I could because the example is highly relevant to the etic concept right? Similarly, could I talk about serotonin & depression, if they'd ask about how neurotransmission affects behavior, and explain that the drugs used for tre…

Hey guys, In paper 3 of psychology , where we have the stimulus material and question based on research methods, are we suppose to evaluate the research method seen only in the stimulus? For example " We can see the advantages of qualatative in this study here......" but suppose there was a point of qualatative data that wasnt in the study but will help answer the question , should u mention it? For example "Qualatative data has many interpretations to it, but that cannot be seen in this study." Please help me understand this . Thank you

I understand that paper 2 includes 3 questions from each option. What I'm wondering is whether each question will be from one sub-section of each each (e.g. one on violence, one on relationships, and one on social responsibility in the human relations section). Can I essentially memorize long answers to every question in social responsibility and be sure that one of them will be on the exam? I'm in SL, so I'll only have to answer one.

I was just wondering if anyone had the exam (P1, P2, P3) mark boundaries for the the new HL syllabus? I looked through many of the grade boundaries documents but Psych HL doesn't seem to be on any of them. Thank you!

Our teacher showed us the Paper 2 questions from past two years, and it seemed like there was one question from each section of an option. For example, under Human Relationships there was a question on social responsibility, interpersonal relationships and violence (sections 8.1, 8.2 & 8.3 respectively). Does anyone know whether this is a typical pattern in Paper 2 exams?

Hi everyone, I saw that someone else had posted their study guide, so I thought why not I do the same. A friend and I just basically filled out all the possible questions (learning outcomes) throughout the entire year. Sources - Oxford Psychology Course Companion / my own notes from class. It's not perfect, but it should help a bit, as I know that there's so much you have to know for the exams and it's nice to have everything in one place. I know that for me personally, it's been useful since I just had my paper 1 today. (: Sorry it's a bit late, but, hope it helps! Like the other poster has said, please don't take this and say its your own or re-upload onto any other sit…

Our school chose the Abnormal Psych option along with the human relationships option. For abnormal psychology, we only have to choose one disorder from 2 out of the 3 categories (affective disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders). I want to do PTSD and Bulimia, which are from anxiety disorders and eating disorders, respectively. However, I've noticed that my textbook has a lot more information on major depressive disorder (an affective disorder). Would it be a disadvantage to me if I choose PTSD and Bulimia, which I have less information about? Would my marks be negatively impacted? This textbook provides MUCH more information on depression than the two disorders t…

Ok fellow IB'ers. NEED HELP ASAP. first year IB, extended essay beginning to take shape. BUT MOSTLY A D V I C E My topic based on discipline, and although it will probably be changed, during the next year and a half - my research question has come down to this "A comparative analysis of the behavioral effects of punitive and non-punitive disciplinary methods, within educational environments on young males, from ages 9 to adolescence" basically, the effects of pu…

Hi there! I was just wondering, if the structure of P1 and P2 is such that questions are included from all areas of the topic? That might seem a bit cryptic, so allow me to explain. For example, in paper 2, there will be questions on developmental psychology. Now, our book has divided the option into cognitive, social and identity development. Since there are several essay questions on the paper, I would like to know if they tend to equally represent the different areas or if they might be all from, say, cognitive development? Does the same hold for Paper 1 in any way? I love my HL Psychology, but am drowning in studies, to be honest. I would like to focus on a few cha…

Our teacher left earlier this year so I'm kinda lost. I'm testing Psych HL and had a few questions: Are the learning outcomes in each section what we need to know for the exam? I've been annotating entire sections and it's been quite time-consuming so if all we have to know are learning outcomes it would save a lot of time. Also, how do you guys memorize the researchers' names for the studies? I find that I can remember the study itself and what it shows or correlates but I can't remember the names lol.

Hello My psych teacher said we do not necessarily need to be able to remember the people who did a study and when it was conducted in the finals. However I am not so sure if she's right. Isn't it important to be able to cite exactly what you're referring to when forming an argument? Is this correct or not? Surely it wouldn't hurt to remember them? Best of luck to your finals, people

Hello IB psychologists, I have a question regarding answering specific LAQ's. My teacher has told me that I have to use 2 studies for LAQs and this seems pretty effective when answering questions such as "To what extent does genetics affect behavior" because one can quote the different results of the studies and make a good argument. However if I were asked to contrast two theories, how exactly would I use studies? I mean, I could just point out differences between the two theories, and that would answer the question effectively. In addition, some of my options have learning outcomes with the command term "Distinguish", which once again tells me to distinguish between two…

With reference to relevant research studies, to what extent does genetic inheritance influence behavior? How do I answer this question? I know i have to write a brief introduction about behavioural genetics and i also mention the human genome project in a brief sentence. Based on genetic research there are 3 studies: twin studies, family studies and adoption studies! How should i write them? What research studies should i put in I know i have to mention minnesota twin studies as an example for twin studies. So how about family studies and adoption studies? Which research studies should i use as an example in family studies and adoption studies? My psychology teacher is…

Hey guys, I have a bit of trouble with IB psychology here. I am writing this post because its not fully clear to me how to write a good LAQ/SAQ (Long answer/ short answer). I have never obtained a 7 in my class, and I do not know exactly why. Can you give me tips on the structure of LAQ/SAQ? Should I include a thesis statement (if so, can you give examples for quesitons with different command terms?) ? What approach should be taken in order to get a 7? Thankyou very much!

Hello All. My teacher is prepping us for psychology HL 3. Based on the syllabus, the test will be testing our knowledge and understanding of qualitative research and methodology. I asked my teacher whether inferential statistic and its analysis will be essential to complete this paper. She was not so sure about it. It would be a great help if you guys can clarify this for me and my class. We didn't spend any time on inferential statistic at all. For my internal assessment I have to seek aid from my maths teacher. And I will be taking mock exam paper 3 in a week so I really want to know that before I go in to take the test. Thank you in advance!

Hello everybody, I have been stuck on the inferential statistics for a while now and i don't know which once are more appropriate. I have two sets of numbers (the response time to stimuli) one of the control group and the second of the experimental group. I thought of the t test, which states the statistical significance of the difference of the two sets but i am not sure and maths it's defently not my strength. Thank you very much.

Hey guys! I'm nearly finished my final copy for my IA- it's just that on my draft my teacher has written "not reported" for the inferential statistics part (and thus, I got a 0 for it). He's created this excel spreadsheet that gives us all the numbers we need, but I'm not sure which ones I need to put in to my report? Oh, I used the Wilcoxin Signed Rank test because I used repeated measures (serial position effect- both groups did both the control and experimental trials) The list of err.. 'things' he's given us are: The differences The ranks of the differences How many pairs we're working with (I thought this was kind of obvious? but oh well) The sums of the positi…

I can reassure you that, out of all the IAs I've done, Psych IA is the worst...hahahaha. Anyway, I'm doing my experiment on the levels of processing. I have three groups, and I'm comparing how many words each group recalled. I'm almost done, but I'm stuck with the inferential tests. My book states that I have to choose one out of Chi-squared, Mann Whitney-U, and Wilcoxon (I think). None of those 3 seem to suit my data because they all require two groups. So, I'm confused. I think my data is ordinal. I'm not really sure about that, either. Help would be much appreciated

Dear everyone, Am I the only one who is having trouble finding the supporting studies for their original research?? I couldn't find anything relevant to my study. I am doing Glanzer and Cunitz (1966) the primacy and recency effect on the free recall of the list of words. I am only doing one part of the experiment (only the recency effect, not the primacy). It is about the list of the words that people need to remember. One group of participants is doing maths problems after learning the words and then recalling and one is recalling the words immediately after they learned it. Results show that those doing math problems after, remember better the first words and less the…

Hey, I am contemplating whether to do Psychology SL or HL (obviously from the title haha). I honestly do not see the logic of understanding and memorising over 12 essays for each syllabus point for each chapter. when only one essay of each chapter will appear on the exam. Thats a probably of less than 10% that the essay you studied will be on the exam depending on each chapter. Is it not just the probably of being lucky on the exam? Moreover, didnt only 4% get a 7 for Psychology HL last year? Although I am doing exceptionally well in the subject, I just do not feel motivated to study Psychology whatsoever. I have a question. Is the learning perspective from the old syllabus ? If so, then is the social cultural perspective the replacement in the new syllabus? Or are they the same thing? What's different about the two syllabuses? The reason last year's class didn't so well on the exams was because of the change in syllabus and it was more dominantly heavy on hormones in the questions? I just want to prepare myself for this years exams, but obviously I have been doing it wrong studying the wrong syllabus.

Hey guys, just wondering how you guys take your notes I do mine electronically, but not in very organised fashion and I end up summarising them on paper since I tend to remember it better. Also here's a really good tip I think that many people don't use, have a separate logbook for your studies, so print out the study and staple it to one page and on the other page do your Aim, Method, Procedure, Results, Conclusion (we call it all mobile phones ring constantly haha). Still haven't really found the best method yet but still experimenting. What about you? And how's it working out?

So I'm starting my Extended Essay, and I have come up with a topic in my field of Psychology, but after looking around on here for a while; it is way too broad (not doing too well in English if you can't tell by this sentence haha). My research question is, "Do all psychoactive drugs have the same affect on the human psyche?" And I was gonna go over the four categories; hallucinogens, depressants, stimulants, and narcotics and talk about dependence, effects, and how they are used. What do you think, all constructive criticism welcome

My exam's in a few days, and I read on this website, that to get a 7, you need 68%, however from the graduates I spoke to last year, they said that the grade boundary for a 7 is 73%. I was kinda confused, so I just wanted to make it clear. Is it 68%? Or higher? Because it's the NOV exam, or 73%+ ? Thanks!
