Hey, guys. For my IA, I am considering doing a very simple topic: Is there a relationship between intelligence and wearing glasses? Judging by the rubric, it seems like the actual question doesn't matter as much as meeting the criteria and doing the math properly. Is this true? Or, should I do a more complicated topic: "Are teenagers or the elderly worse drivers?" For this one, I would examine statistics and data from Stats Canada as well as personal opinion surveys. However, this one seems like a LOT more work, and if the actual process is more important than the topic, then I'll do the first one. Thoughts? Thanks, guys!

I am a dance teacher working with children between the ages of 2-5 and 6-9 and I have various danceclasses. I have access to every dance class list of the danceschool (about 15 classes or something) And I was thinking about doing something with that information, but I can't really think of what so if anyone have an idea I would appreciate it soooooooooooooo much!

Hey guys, I read Drake's stick-ied post btw. So I get that basically any wild comparison of two things works as a Maths Studies SL (SSL) project. Here's mine: "Studying the variation of a Basketball's Launch angle with the player's height" I got it all cut out for me, the tracking software I have, cam-corder et al and then I just take the reading and Yapp away.... some how I feel I should do more. But maybe I'm thinking from a science Lab perspective and have sett high expectations. excuse that! Thanks, opinions valued! *second person* Yeah turns out it is, dude.. Wow, since I answered this, can I rep myself too !?

Hey guys, So i'm on the stage where I have to choose a topic for my math studies IA but I've got no clue what I could do or what topic to choose. Some people say statistics is the easiest way out... but I don't know Are we also graded on creativity ? Cuz I'm a blank page right now.. can't think of anything original! Is there anyone out there who can come up with some good ideas for a nice math studies IA ?!

I read an article on this and I thought it might make a good Math Studies IA since I am still in the process of picking a topic. My idea is investigating the relation between family income and SAT scores, so for example, the higher the family income the high the child's SAT scores. Then I was thinking of using a free survey website and possibly putting it on here to find the results to get my results (I need to survey a minimum of 100 people) and I feel that it would be to invasive if I did this survey in person so by doing it online would be anonymous. So if anyone has any feedback, ideas, thoughts on this please let me know!

I decided that I didn't want to do anything math related until I got into the 12th grade. Now I want to be a mechanical or civil engineer and I'm in Math Studies. Does this put me at a disadvantage. It's not like I'm struggling through the class, in 11th grade I got over 100% test grade average.

Okay, so somebody told me that people taking math studies like I am are required to take calculus next year, while other people say it is just an option. Is it required? My other HL is in biology so I don't see how it is necessary. Also, will it really hinder my chances of getting into college because I didn't take calculus or is an IB diploma paired with a good GPA and SAT scores good enough for a decent college? (UC Davis for the Americans if that helps any). (The college I want requires a score of at least 30 in IB to accept it)

Alright, don't laugh... I've been struggling in IB math studies. I got a 2 in my math exam for grade 10 and upon being recommended to do studies for IB I STILL got a low mark on the final exam. I always did the homework, payed attention in class and thought I'd grasped the concepts and would be able to use them but whenever it came to a test I rarely did well. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do? Like a guide or advice on studying? Honestly, anything is welcome.

I am enrolled in math studies because the only other option we had was HL Math and math is my worst subject. I understand that it is pretty easy but what is it?? Actually I think there was some math class involving computers or something but everybody at school told me not to take it... do you know what it is or is my memory faulty?

When I say static I mean the same part of the triangle? since the triangles are upside down and tilted and oriented in a number of different ways, its tought to remember which side was A or B or C if the proportions have changed, so do we strcily identify a certain side as an alphabet? In this Image you can see what's marked as A,B,C what if I were to change those, when I was given a textual sum and I didn't know how it looked, would I be wrong ? or is safe to use the formula anyhow, unlike Pythagoras where subtraction can occur too. Thanks for your patience, it has been a confusing doubt right?

I am writing my IA and I looked in the guide and it says 'The bibliography should specify: author/s, title, date and place of publication, and the name of the publisher, and should follow consistently one standard method of listing sources.' I want to include a dictionary and I dont know if I have all the information needed Would this be correct? A S Hornby, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English Sixth edition, Oxford University Press, 2000 Also, should I just write: According to .... this is '....' and then put the dictionary information into the bibliography or is there another way to do it? Are footnotes good to use? What should be put in them? …

Ok, so I'm supposed to spend 100 hours on my Math IA! I found something interesting to do it on: "Is it possible to determine an author by mathematically analysing his or her texts?" BUT I have no clue how to use math to find out that x is Mark Twain and y is Shakespeare. The calculation used is called "stylometry" or wordprint analysis. Does anybody know how to do this, a website that tells me how to do this (in simple terms, for a creative person to understand), or could someone at least tell me what my variables would be? Thanks a million for any contribution.

Im just not quite sure if I am to give the teacher a plan of what I am going to do or a plan of how I am going to structure my work... I was wondering that maybe I could do it like this: 1. Inroduction In here I will put: - - I will attain this information from ... etc. Do you think that would be good? Id ask my teacher but I am sick and cant contact her :/

This might sound like a silly/basic question to many, but I'm anything but bright in maths. As much as I try, and despite the fact that I've tried reading from various books, I cannot for the love of God understand perfect square factorisation. Apparently, there's an easy way of solving it with the GDC. Can someone please explain both methods, with and without GDC?

I need help- urgently. Sorry if there is already a topic on this- delete/move as appropriate. Our teacher was really bad for the past couple of years, and although there are things I can do I cannot do them as well as I should be able to by now. My GDC skills are less than hopeless although I'm learning how to use it by myself, but if anybody can help me by giving some advice on exam technique/revision technique, etc. This is what I've done/already do: - Read the Gezner Maths Studies study guide - Practiced some questions to practice the methods - Trying to learn the GDC - Read examiner's commentary on past questions in the Q-bank our teacher gave us Thank you! Hi everyone, I'm working (hurriedly!) on my Math Studies IA and I am trying to figure out how and if I can run a Chi-Squre Test of Independence on my data. My data consists of three variables: military expenditure (% GDP), education expenditure (% GDP), and literacy rate of an assortment of countries. It's in an attached spreadsheet. If I can run it, what should my table look like? Is it possible to do a 3 X 1 grid? Thanks so much for your help -- I really appreciate it. Rounded Compiled Data.xls

Hi, just wondering if anyone here would be willing to share a website with lots of raw data in the form that we need for the Math Studies IA, ie. year by year and such and not statistical summaries, which i've been finding on loads of websites. Not asking for any help finding a topic, which would be contrary to the strict anti plagiarism rules, just would really appreciate a good source of raw data. thanks!

I have a table with data of temperature over the years. It is a periodic function since the temperature increases during the summer and decreases in the winter. I am now going to use this formula to create a cosine wave : y = a sin (bx+c) I am going to find y and i have the rest of the values. But how do i find a (the amplitude) in the table of data? Is it simply the highest value or is there a formula to find it? Keep in mind i dont have the graph yet because that is what i am going to create. Thanks for any help

Hey! I just wondering if a topic for math studies IA could be: "Investigating the graphs of sine functions"? Where will be investigating the graphs of the sine function as I change the values for the three constants; A, B and C. First A followed by B then C, and after having investigated all of these aspects of the y = sin x graph, I will have a look at how it is linked to the graph of y = cos x hence examining the relationship between the two graphs. ? Or do I have to write about something else? Regards

I have about 500 sets of data that I need to plot onto a graph... I wanted to do scatter plot so I could find the line of best fit, but now I don't think that's going to be possible. Should I just do a cumulative frequency curve instead? However, if there's some way that I could get all of my points onto a graph...or maybe a couple of graphs and still have it be acceptable in my internal assessment, that'd be great.

What i'm going to do is estimate the temperature for a date. I have calculated the standard deviation etc. The data i have is from average temperatures over the years. What's the next step? Help :/
