Hi I got this IA 2 days ago and im current working HARD on it but i don't seem to get along well with question 3 and 4.I know some of you guys have already finished it so i need some help with this. 1. Factorize the expression P(n)=n^x-n for x = 2,3,4,5. Determine if the expression is always divisible by the corresponding x. If divisible use mathematical induction to prove your result by showing whether P(k+1)-P(k) is always divisible by x. Using appropriate technology, explore more cases and make a conjecture for when n^x - n is divisible by x. 2. Explain how to obtain the entries in Pascal's triangle...State the relationship between the expression P(k+1)-P(k) and…

hey, how much are our maths portfolios worth of our entire grade?

My math project is due in tommorrow, in other words, I am stressed. Just a simple question that suddenly struck me: Is it fine to write the whole project on the computer or is it wiser to do by hand in order to write the maths easier. So far I have just written a draft by hand, now I am going to copy it to the real form. I am also a bit unsure about the amount of mathematical processes required and amount of data colleted. If you can explain anything of this, please reply.. Thanks Capa..!

Hello, I am currently in my first year of the Maths HL course im doing alright (im still hanging on somehow), however i´d like to boost my grades and performance up a bit. SO does any one have any good study guides which i can use, perhaps with worked out problems or exam questions or the like, but perferably one which explains whats going on. thank you, a HL in need

Heard some rumours about the Further Mathematics curriculum being discontinued i.e. Further Mathematics being scrapped as a subject, wondered if it's true. Also, is there any literature on the rationale behind 'Euclidean Geometry and Conic Sections' being removed as an option of Mathematics HL? Thanks.

Okay, so, lately I've been feeling extremely discouraged for Math. I started Math HL officially this year (or rather, last year considering it's 2009 already, haha. I still haven't fully adjusted). Anyhow, my school has a pretty big IB programme and it's mandatory for all IB candidates to take Math HL. I was never extremely bright at Math, but I got by before by reviewing the night before the tests and the day before the exam and still managed to do satisfactorily before Math HL. Unfortunately, lately, that hasn't sufficed. I feel like I really should start trying and doing my homework daily because effort -> success, right? I think any other aspiring student would …

Everyone always does something simple like a correlation between color preference and music preference, although I find that interesting i want something exciting that has never been done before. I don't mind corrolation at all or any other type of math, I'm a genius from being in math studies but thats not saying much. So if you have any ideas of something interesting pleas let me know!

I'm doing my math studies IA and trying to find the formula for Pearson's Product Moment Coefficient that I can use in my IA. I want to find one and then also be able to take away the variables like in the IA example posted here about underage drinking. I need to use something compatable with Microsoft Word 2003.

I'm trying to see what a graph of an equation would look like compare to some plotted points. I know how to show a graph that plots the point but I dont know how to get the graph of the equation in excel. Does anyone know how to do this or another way to do what I'm trying to do? by the way this is the Crows Dropping Nuts IA http://teacher.ocps.net/joel.brielmaier/Ca...0and%20nuts.pdf

I'm trying to incorporate a higher level math process in my IA, this being Chi-squared independence test. I learned how to do it last year but I seem to confused it with another Chi-squared process. What is the difference between the chi-squared tests? How do you do them? Thanks.

Hi What is expected to get a 7 in the project? I have heard that it should be pretty easy but my teacher has told us more or less nothing about the outline of the project and how much work is needed to be done in order to get full marks. Any ideas? Thanks ... Capa

Hey, I am wondering if anyone who has done the HL IA I for divisibility used induction (purely) to answer question 3 and 4. I used mainly arguments based around the choose function, becuase I can't see how it could be done purely with induction. P.S. Who here thinks that it was a bad idea on the IBO's part in putting one of the most known theorems (where the proof is even in most IB books) into an IA?

I have no idea how to solve this problem. I have the final answer, but don't know how to get there. I think I need to use implicit differentiation, but I'm not sure, and I'm quite confused. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Find the equation of the tangent line to the curve is x^2+y^2 = 169 at the point (5, -12). A. 5y-12x=-120 B. 5x-12y=119 C. 5x-12y=169 D. 12x+5y=0 E. 12x+5y=169 I have been told that the final answer is (B)5x-12y=119, but none of my friends seem to be able to explain it.

Hey, I'm working on an IB Maths SL task and I wanted to know something. I have data points from which I generated a quadratic and a cubic function (by means of simultaneous equations). However, none of these functions fit the data points perfectly. How can I see which of the two functions fits the points better? Thanks for everything!

Okay, so we just got our second chance of doing the Type I assignment again. I failed miserably the half a year ago when we were made to attempt it a first time, so I thought I'd ask some questions. I... think I completely do not understand what the IB wants me to do. The last time (we did the infinite surds that time; now we're doing the "Parallels and Parallelograms") I thought I understood, but then I got 13 points or something. I never really understood what I did wrong/didn't do well enough. I read somewhere (in this document) that Excel is not a good graphing programme to use. Have…

does anyone know how many sides a circle has? or how many visible sides can be made until the shape visuallylooks cicular or which number has the largest number of factors i am searching online, but if anyone has more information it would be extremely helpful! thank you. is there any formula - or any other method- of finding the area for polygons with large numbers of sides- i.e may be a polygon with 29 sides or something like that? does anyone know of a process by which i could find the area? does anyone know of a program that is able to draw shapes when you imput the area and/or perimeter and/or the number of sides?

Hello, I am working on my Match HL IB Portfolio Problem and it is the one about the Freight Elevator. I just have a little "understanding question" as far as 1(a) goes. The rest I understand and am just about done with. However, I do not understand what 1(a) is asking me to do. The prompt is : (a) interpret the original vertical line motion simulation. I have asked my teacher about it, but his answer just confused me more. I am not looking for the answer, merely for someone to explain what it is I need to interpret. Thank-you =^}

During this type I, you come up with conjectures. At different stages it asks you to 'prove' your conjecture. What does this mean? I suppose if it said 'prove for values such and such and for something equals.... etc' they would mean induction, but what do they mean here? Is just plugging numbers in also called a proof? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have gotten an excellent grade on your IA, I would greatly appreciate it if you could tell me what your topic was on (especially if it was on statistics). Thank you!
