For the Math Studies IA the student is to pick 2 variables they believe are related to each other in some way and test this using statistical analysis calculations. You can literally pick any two variables. I for example chose how many hours people play video games on average per week and the amount of words they could remember in a 1 minute interval. You want this to flow like a story, no one wants to grade something where you just throw numbers at them. Explain what they mean. Explain why you did this (I don't care if it's simply saying you simplified a fraction, do it). I'm not saying the graders suck at math, I'm saying that you don't know who's getting it so assum…

My Math Studies IA finl copy is due Wednesday. However, I've just come to the realization that my question and data don't really do anything. There's nothing to really test with it. Is it possible to redo an IA in two days if I pull an all nighter tonight and possibly tomorrow?

Hi guys, I am so stressed about IA Topic since my teacher keeps rejecting. The research question I proposed is as following, "Is there a Correlation between usage of beauty filters on Social Media and low esteem of teenagers?" I need your advice if this will work for my Math AI (SL) Internal Assessment. The data will be collected through survey. My teacher said it won't work since you need numerical values such as height. Please help me out

Hi, I'm supposed to be working over my math IA over the winter break, and I'm planning to do a stats IA to see the correlation between sleep deprivation and anxiety, since we'd be very familiar with the two things. By "anxiety", I'm asking specifically about feelings of worry, uneasiness, or nervousness to the point where it affects your ability to function. It can be anything from mild (ie: not being able to focus) to moderate (ie: feeling nauseous) to severe (ie: hyperventilating). So for the survey: 1. How many hours of sleep do you get on an average school night? 2. Do you experience any anxiety from lack of sleep? Rate your anxiety from 0 to 10. 3. How many hours of …

For my math studies IA, I am investigating the ideal packaging surface areas of different objects such as milk cartons, juice bottles etc. and I am starting off by finding the volume of the object, then the surface area and then I am using differentiating to find the percentage difference. But now I want to make different graphs to compare the objects, but I do not know how I should go on from here? Which type of graph should I use? Can someone please explain and help me!

Hi the topic I decided on was "How the practical implications of logarithms have simplified modern mathematics?", but I don't know if it's narrow enough so I would love some more opinions on this. Additionally, I was thinking of talking about the real life applications of logarithms, like newton's law of cooling, etc. But I guess it's still not enough in my opinion, since from what I can tell my supervisor doesn't want me to do a modelling essay as it has to be broader and much different than the internal assessment. If someone could also help me figure out the core differences between the IA and EE that would be really helpful, as I know the latter is more research based…

Hi, I really need help on my Math Studies IA. I am investigating the relationship between language ability (the number of languages a person speaks) and academic performance (their most recent IB grade) in Math and English. I want to see if there is a correlation between these two variables of language ability and academic performance, and later on compare to see whether language ability has a stronger impact on performance in Math or English. Can someone advise me the math processes I could use for this. I tried making a scatter plot but since both of my variables consist of whole numbers it isn't really working out.

I have decided to have my Math IA revolve around the probability behind the prisoner's dilemma. I need help deciding on three simple maths and one sophisticated math to explain the game (besides a tree diagram and expected prison sentences). I am afraid that I won't have much numbers/math to work with. Thank you in advance.

Hello everyone, So my dilemma is like this. I'm a rising ibdp senior, and I want to major in computer science in university. I just finished math hl 1, and with it I took the AP Calculus BC exam. I passed the AP exam, and I feel like I have a reasonable understanding of year 1 calculus. With that in mind, I wanted to continue specifically with calculus and differential equations, as those relate closely with a cs degree. So this year I am taking Calc 3 (multivar) and Differential Equations 1 at my local university and am hoping to transfer those credits to whatever university I end up going to full time. So considering that I already have a rigoro…

I got a 9 out of 20 on the IA and I'm freaking out. How much does the IA really matter? I think I'm going to do well on the actual exam because I've been taking practice exams and feel fairly confident, but I don't know if my IA score is going to screw me over... Like if I got a 3 on the IA and get a 6/7 on the exam what will I get overall?

Hi there! I badly need a topic for IA in Math Studies. I have come up with this topic: temperature changes in a particular region for a year and see if it follows a sine curve or not. If yes, you can apply all the properties of sine curve , altitude , periodicity etc and study the temperature change is this valid? and does anyone know of any such studies and where i could find it on the internet thanks in advance!

Hello, I have been trying to figure out how Chi squared works for a while. I looked at examples and videos but I don't know how it applies to my data. I am especially confused on how to make a contingency table? I understand that my null hypothesis will be: McDonalds locations per 100,000 people and obesity rates are independent and then My H1 is that: McDonalds locations per 100,000 people and obesity rates are dependent. I don't understand how one gets the values of the contingency table. I don't want it done for me but it would really help to get a step by step guidance. Here is a link to my data: https://docs.google.com/spreadshe…

We had another IA and it’s due Friday but because I’m a certificate student I wasn’t told to do it. So I didn’t and I appreciated that I didn’t have to because of my ADHD. I’m in math studies and I am the only student who isn’t Full Diploma IB in the class and we’re preparing for the IA. If it’s only supposed to help me get the diploma then why would I even bother? I’m not gonna get the diploma anyways (I didn’t even find out I couldn’t until a few months into IB junior year) so I’d just be doing an IA for no reward. I don’t see the value in it unless it will specifically aid me as a Certificate Student. What am I supposed to do?

So this is my IA question "The relationship between countries’ GDP and the life expectancy of its population", what should I look at? My plan of investigation is: I am going to make a scatter plot and make of a line of best fit to see if there is a linear correlation between the data collected. After that, I will find the standard deviation in order to find out the dispersion of the data. With the data found, I will find the least-squares regression line to find out the equation of the line. After I will use Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient to find out the strength of the linear relationship between two variables. To finalize my investigation I will look at the Chi-squa…

Hiya For those of you who are struggling to think of a maths IA topic, here are a few examples: (all content taken from Ibmathsresources.com - even more ideas and info re the exploration on there.....) Example Maths Studies IA Investigations: Correlations: 1) Is there a correlation between hours of sleep and exam grades? Studies have shown that a good night’s sleep raises academic attainment. 2) Is there a correlation between height and weight? The NHS use a chart to decide what someone should weigh depending on their height. Does this mean that height is a good indicator of weight? 3) Is there a correlation between arm span and foot height? This is also a potential oppo…

Hi, I'm currently at the end of my first year in IB and possibly be predicted for a grade of 27 only! All because of Math and Physics(not really important at this thread). I originally chose Maths HL but soon downgraded to Maths SL and now I'm thinking of Math Studies. I'm just not good with numbers as in any other subjects I excel in it e.g English or Geo or Business. I chose Maths SL to ensure my choices aren't limited to only a few choices(University courses). I'm only really interested in the following courses: - Business Management - Finance and Accounting - Geography/International relation - Politics/law Thank you,

Everybody says don't use the textbook because it is too easy. They also say that most of the past papers are too easy. How do you revise then if the textbook and the past papers are both too easy? Do Maths SL content?

So I am entering my second year as a DP student which is both exciting and unnerving due to the shear amount of work there is to do. That being said my math teacher over the summer wanted us to finalize our math IA topics. I have narrowed it down to two potential topics which are the geometry of ice hockey or how does listening to music affect ones ability to solve math equations. Thanks so much, Maddy
