I'm thinking of doing an IA involving traffic jams. Specifically, when cars are crossing from country to country which requires customs check and clearance. I'm not sure if I would be able to model it or at least predict the waiting time to reach the checking officer. I'm not sure also where and what theories do I research on. Traffic Flow Theory? Queue Theory? Continuity Equation? Please help me out if you guys know what this issue is linked to what so ever theories and equations that I can research on or if there are any tips. Thank you.

So I was thinking for my IA about modelling a volcano, so I would be finding an equation for the slope and then revolving it about the axis for volume. However, I am not so sure that I'll be able to write a decent IA on this, and I'm trying to find ways to expand that would make it longer. Any ideas?

Hei Guys, HL first year Math student here. Just a quick question. For the actual exam in may, what is going to be the amount of points for paper 1,2, and 3. My teacher gave us like 400points worth of questions for all three papers combined for review. However, I want to work with the same time constraints as the final exam. For example, if on the real thing you get 30min for 20points worth of questions on Paper two, then I would like to review with those same boundaries. I would really appreciate if someone can tell me what it is, or where to find it. Thx

Hi guys, I am going to have my logarithms (i am in ib1) quiz for hl maths. I am really scared for this, as I heard from some people that test questions are completely different from whats taught in class. Can any one please send me some tough questions, so I can prepare for some unusual question. btw: Are school tests easier than final ib2 exams?

Hi all, So, I'm preparing for a unit test tomorrow on exponents and logarithms, and I am noticing a trend myself. Especially for some complex log/ln equations, I have a great difficulty knowing where and how to go about solving a problem. When I take a look at the answer key, it all makes sense, even the process. It's just that when I attempt solving them on my own, I tend to get stuck at some point. I have a good knowledge on log laws as well as exponent ones however, they do not come to my mind whenever their use is required in a proble (if you know what I mean) I know it takes a ton of practice to feel natural (Which I am doing rn), but I'm l…

Hey there, I have a question regarding Math HL. I want to do game design in college, but I find Math HL to be too tough. I'm considering switching to Math SL. Would this in any way put me to a disadvantage? I prefer getting a 6 or 7 in Math SL, to getting a 3 or 4 in Math HL. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi guys, I'm thinking of doing my IA on soccer. I was going to model the curve of a knuckleball and find an equation for it. I don't want to do curve ball because I think it was done before. What do you think? Is it too complicated? Any suggestions? Thank you and hope we all survive IB together.

I want to write my IA on Eulers Identity. I want to do something out of syllabus like proving it or using it to extract a trigonometric function from a graph. My teacher says proving the Identity will be boring and a lot of people have already done that. If this is a bad idea can anyone offer anything interesting to do with it.

Hello, so I am really confused on what I should do for my HL Math IA. I found an interesting topic, calculating the volume of a hypersphere. Seeing as this is the 4th dimension, I was wondering if this is a good topic for an IA? Is there too much math that is too complicated for HL Mathematics? I plan on using the following link to guide my understanding: http://scipp.ucsc.edu/~haber/ph116A/volume_11.pdf Thanks

Hello everyone, I am about to begin my IB in about 3 months time and i have few queries. First of all i have heard many people say 'omg its really hard' is maths hl really rocket science? Secondly, how many chapters do schools tend to teach in the first year of Ib. Some people say its 5 others say 6. How many topics are thought in the first year. Lastly, how are we assed in Hl maths. is it just through tests or many other things as well? Please someone clear my queries. It will be appreciated. I am really worried about Hl maths. Ps. Dont worry guys my exams are in May 2019

Hey guys, I have questions that I failed to solve. Could any of you help me? 1) if (z+1)/(z-1) = cosx + i sinx, show that z= -i cot(x/2) I found that z is purely imaginary, and tried to replace z with bi and then solve for b, but it didn't work that well 2) if z is a root of the equation [(z+1)/(z-1)]^5 = 1, show that z^4 + 2z^2 + 0.2 = 0 I believe I have to solve the prior question in order to do this question. 3) Hence show that [tan^2 (pi/5)] [tan^2 (2pi/5)] = 5 and [tan^2 (pi/5)] [tan^2 (2pi/5)] = 10 I don't even know where to start off with... help! It would be great if you can show me your steps! Thanks

I have a question that involves using graphs to show that an equation is correct, and I currently have tried to use a linear graph to show the equation, but it didn't seem to be working since the slope if always 1, the second part of the equation is where I'm having trouble at, could any of you help me?

Well, I am taking the IB exams in 5 days and I haven't done much studying. I have only covered my maths option and briefly all biology. Both of these subjects are HL. However, do you think it is doable to study maths HL and bio HL in 5 days? If yes, can you please suggest some ways?? I'm in desperate need of some advice.!!!

Hi everyone I hope you're all having a great day! I have a question for you all and I'm begging for recommendations it's really important. I never liked math and it's even harder this year for me since I've been studying HL. Even though I'm going to take my exam from SL, my school exam grades keep decreasing and this needs to stop. We're using Oxford's HL Mathematics book but it's too hard for me since I'm not a math person at all. Do you know any books which explains HL maths really good and easy as possible? Because I need them. P.S.: I'm living in Turkey so it would be better if you could suggest me a book which Amazon or eBay has. THANK YOU SO MUCH FRO…

I recently had my first HL mathematics mock exam on topic 1 of the curriculum. It followed the same pace and style of the final exams. Despite preparing pretty well (and for a long time), the test caught me by surprise, and didn't go well at all. The pace especially was very hard to keep up with. From all of you people, I'd like to ask, what are some ways to get better at doing the hl maths exams, how to better prepare for them, and please feel free to give any tips and tricks in general. Thanks!

Yes, I'm writing about an IA topic for the 5th time. This time I have got something out of my syllabus, essentially it is an experiment about heat diffusion. I will conduct a simple experiment on heat diffusion and collect some values, then use the Fourier transformation series to calculate the final result. Then I will compare the experimental and theoretical data. The 2nd idea I had was to make another experiment but this time use the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. I'm in math HL and we haven't studied integrals or derivatives. What do you think? Am I insane? Is this a good idea? Will I get a high mark?

Hi, I'm going to be junior next school year and take IB classes. I'm considering about taking Math HL. I currently go to public high school in the States and I went to public high school in Korea now. I've studied math in America and Korea. Since I came to America, I found out that math is super easy here , compared to Korea. We learn pretty much same stuffs but the quality of problems is totally different. Math in Korea is EXTREMELY difficult. I was top 4% of my school in Korea and I always get A in math class here ( However, I feel like story problems are sometimes quite hard for me since I don't speak perfect English ). I took Algebra…

Why not only rely on past papers? In my opinion, the best preparation with past papers is not to look over mark scheme. Essentially, as the name suggests, mark schemes only aim to aid teachers to mark student’s work on his paper. Not only does it lack with the detailed explanation, but also students lose their opportunity to encounter real IB style questions if they rely too much on mark scheme. For section A questions it relatively gives a good explanation; for Section B questions, however, when things get lengthy, explanations tend to be very concise and often do not make sense for students. It solely aims to guide teachers to base their grading criteria; it …

The personal engagement section is quite confusing for me as of now. My current topic is quite abstract (logs and sin/cos/tan of complex numbers), and the actual reason I chose it was because I was just wondering what would happen if I used complex numbers as opposed to real numbers. How exactly do I demonstrate personal engagement in a Math IA in general?

I want to do an IA on graph theory and I have a pretty decent idea in mind but after going through the IA mark guidelines, I feel like my idea would be good for the standard level but not for the higher level. Basically I want to investigate if Europe is traversable and the shortest distance needed to travel round Europe and possible paths if it is traversable. Is there any way to increase the complexity of my work because that's too simple or even better would be a more complex situation/application to model using graph theory that would earn me a good grade.

For my IA, my teacher suggested to see if I could model a very easy song using forrier transformations Would this be a good idea because I am unsure how to go about it? If not, I was interested at looking at projectile motion in cricket (I do physics), but as for the variables I have no idea what would be complex enough to investigate and get good data on. I was also thinking that economic modeling would be interesting to look at (I do ec as well), but not sure how in depth I could take it. Thanks guy!!!! ibNewB

Hi there! I'm just wondering what Further Maths is like and why you guys decided to join Further Maths (instead of HL). I'm currently in HL Maths and I'm still looking forward to convincing my Maths teacher into *coughs* letting me do Further *coughs more*. And also what are the differences between Further and HL other than it being harder and deeper on certain topics (especially calculus). Thanks

I am studying math hl with pamoja and I noticed that its final exam is scheduled way earlier than what I thought, which is at the beginning of May. The subjects that we would be done in this year are: Algebra, Functions and equations, Trigonometry and Circular functions, and Calculus. I wonder how hard the exam is going to be, and it would be great if any of you could give me some "unfamiliar" questions to help me practice.

Hi everyone, im doing my IB this year and just completed my math hl ia a week ago. I did my ia on projectile motion which is a fairly common topic for maths hl students in the IB, and my tutor gave me a students ia which was the exact same topic, scoring 19/20. I read his whole IA understood everything and started my own, from time to time i would look back at his IA to make sure I was going in the right direction. I feel like I based my ia's concepts and structure on his but i did a different sport, than him. meaning that all variable values are different. But the parts of deriving certain equations from others are pretty similar to his. All of results were different fro…

Hey guys, So for my HL Math IA, I stumbled upon vector functions after looking at one that suggested cycloids, which led to brachistrone curve, I'm not 100 sure as I didnt read much up on brachistrone curve itself. So I liked looking into vector functions, and looking into the calculus with vector functions. So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I could investigate more specifically using vector functions and calculus of vector functions
