The title is probably a bit confusing, but basically I'm wondering if it's possible to succeed in Spanish HL without being a native speaker or speaking the language at home? My teacher said all his past HL students spoke Spanish at home. I'm not so good at grammar, but I can generally understand what's going on in a sentence without getting every single word of it, and at the SL level I do very well on my practice paper 1s and 2s (we haven't done a lot of oral practice yet). Is it possible for me to succeed with study at home, or should I ask now to switch back down?

Hey guys im currently in my first year of dp1, which is ending this month... So basically we are having our practice exams. My subjects are Econs hl business hl english hl math sl mandarin ab initio Bio sl i am doing well in all of my subjects scoring at least a 5 or above in all of them, but the issue is with my mandarin. Basically I came into mandarin ab initio with the thought that it is for people who have no previous knowledge or experience with the language. However, my whole class comprises of people who are either Chinese themselves or have studied mandarin in myp or previously whereas I did not. The teacher goes sup…

Hey, does anyone have any tips for the SL French B exam? I've studied the genre d'ecriture formats and some vocab plus grammar. I'd greatly appreciate it if someone shared some of their strategies for preparing for the exam.
Last reply by amelf, -
They way it's been described to us (the class) is we are given a picture, with 15 minutes to prepare, and then we describe it and talk about the question that comes along with it. And then my teacher will ask my questions about any of the topics we have done so far (which is Health, Social Relations, and Methods of Communication). I assume this is generally how it is for most people? What can I do to prepare? Mainly vocabulary, and which conjugations are considered good to put in. I'm also looking through the textbook I have on the appropriate topics, which seems sensible to me.

Hello! I'm currently in the process of revision as I will be doing my French B SL exams in two days, but I am really scared about P2. I was wondering about what complex grammar structures I can use to solidify the content of my P2? I know that causatif, voix passif, subjonctif, and les pronoms interrogatifs are some. Are there any others? I want to get full marks for Criteria A of the marking scheme, so it would be really helpful to know how to achieve that.

So basically my teacher was new to the whole IB curriculum and taught us- not the wrong stuff- but not the things I need to know for the exam... I was going over practice ones and I literally feel like I can't understand anything so I bought the oxford course companion and even that's a little vague. Not sure if I'm supposed to be in the dark about this exam or what... Can someone recommend me to resources that would actually have content relevant to the exam? Is there certain vocab I have to know???? Grammar?! Plz help

Hey, I did my paper 2 yesterday for German Ab Initio and think that I made 7 mistakes (that I know of). I was wondering whether people know how many mistakes you can make before you either drop to a 6 or even worse to a 5. I feel like my message and overall gist was ok but I made a lot of stupid mistakes since I tried to use perfect tenses of verbs I didn't know (which was verry stupid). Thanks! P.S plz be honest

Hi guys, These are some very useful tools for learning a language. They provide you with all sorts of help related to translation (obv ) proof reading, grammar, examples, and usages. - www.Wordreference.com as many of you may know is a dictionary for many languages and often gives you a few example sentences and basic facts (masc. feminine, noun, etc.) - www.linguee.com is a great website if you come across a word and want to find other forms it's used in. It basically finds real-life websites/articles/etc. that use a word in 2 languages (e.g. English and French) It also has a basic dictionary and works in many languages. - www.Bonpatron.com is grea…

Im a native Spanish speaker because I am half Mexican, but I am also a native English Speaker because I am half English as well. My IB coordinator says that I cannot take Spanish AB because I am a native Spanish speaker, but I have an English passport. Should I not be able to take Spanish AB? I can also say that I am just a native English speaker, because I have lived more in England than I have in Mexico. I dont think my IB coordinator knows what he is talking about, as it is his first year.

Every year, the papers get harder and harder for Mandarin B. At our school, our class has long been in a dispute with our Chinese teacher, as she doesn't teach us very well and when we ask for harder things/suggest for more practice on certain aspects, she either starts arguing with us or says she will do it, and goes back to being the same the next lesson. The situation has gotten to the point where head of departments are currently involved. My exams are this year, with my mocks in May. I realise that at this rate, nothing can be done and I was wondering if anyone had any tips of learning a language/Mandarin B? How do you guys study new vocabulary, practice …

Going over word count in Paper 2

Do examiners really count every single word in Paper 2? And do they really take away marks if you're over word count? (I'm in SL so this would be 400 words). Even if I was just 5 words over the word count, would I still lose the same amount of marks as if I was 100 words over?

What are the requirements for this? I heard that in order to get it, you have to take IB Social Anthropology. While I'm in pursuit of the bilingual diploma, I have very little interest in social anthropology.

Hi, I'm currently taking French 1 in public school and it's 18 weeks course. I'm gonna transfer to private school which offers IB program and I'm having a hard time scheduling. I know French HL is for students who finished French 4. I'm going to study French so hard this summer. And I'm pretty good ate learning new languages and love French SO MUCH. Also, I'm trying to expose myself to French a lot and planning to work in field of Fashion. So, if I take French, I think it will be really beneficial for me. The only problem is I'm not sure my French will be good enough to take French HL after this summer. Or I'm thinking about taking Frenc…

So, I have used 4 articles and blogs in total for my French ab initio written task, and am about to upload them on the IBO Candidate website. However, I have found that there are 2 sections: 1 for the Written Task and 1 for the sources. For the sources, how are we supposed to upload them? Do we combine all the webpages we used and convert it to a pdf file and upload? Or do we upload them separably? Thanks

We're handing in our French B SL written assignments soon and I just have a few questions about the guidelines. First of all, I'm wondering about the format for parenthetical citations. My teacher told us to use (Author's last name, "Article title") and I assume he knows what he's talking about, but I just wanted to check because this doesn't follow any of the citation styles. Do we need a bibliography in a specific style at the end? I'm also concerned about one of my sources because I read somewhere that there is a word limit (I think it was 400 words) for the sources, but my teacher never mentioned this. Am I allowed to cite a longer article with headings an…

Im a ib year 11 student and have already did ib for 5 weeks. The subjects im doing now are English Hl, Mathmatics, Biology HL, Busniess HL, Japanese and History. During the five weeks i found that history was too hard for me, i chose it because my mom told me but i personally have no interest on it and was really bad at it since i was in grade6. I was thinking about change history to another subject, however if i change it now I'll have to catch up what they've learnt during the five weeks. I think the best choice is to change history to chinese because my mum is chinese and i can speak and write a little of it. However the school do not offer chinese so i'll have to lear…

I was just finishing up my written assignment in French ab initio, but had some questions. 1) How many sources are we supposed to use? I thought we were supposed to use 3 sources which are written in French. Are we allowed to use more than 3 sources, and sources written in English not only in French? 2) We do not have to to referencing right? Since we upload the sources and the Written Assignment separately. 3) When is the deadline of uploading. Is it 15th of March? Thanks

Hello everyone! My sister is currently doing IB in New Zealand and she's taking French B but she's struggling with it so she thought she could take Arabic B instead (her first language), although her school doesn't offer it. So my questions are: 1) Can she take language B as self-taught? If yes, is there any legal IB document for this? cause I can't find one on the internet 2) Can her school disapprove of this? Or is self-taught system is only based on the student's decision and preference? 3) Is there a guide to the assessments that are done in self taught subjects? Or can she contact someone to guide her and let her know all the assessments and due …

Hello all, It says on the highest grade boundary for Criterion A (Lang B SL): To what extent is a source 'fully described'? Also, I just want to make sure I understand - the aim of the WA is the 'point'/thesis? E.g. I'm writing an open letter to encourage people to pursue careers in physics, chemistry etc etc - is that my aim also? Pardon the stupid question heh :$

In the IB guide for language b, it says that the written assignment needs to be handwritten. I saw this after finishing it, and started to worry! my teacher told me that did not count anymore , that it was fine that we wrote in on the computer, and she is going to send it in to the IB very soon so I am a bit worried. so my question is this, does it have to be handwritten?? Another question I have is about the word count. It says in the guide that we need to write a rationale of 150 words. Is this the maximum requirement? Again my teacher said that we could write up to 250 words, which I have done, and that that would be ok. Is this right? Thank yo…

My Spanish is pretty good but there is a lot of information we haven't yet covered. Hi, I'm taking French B SL right now and I was wondering if there are any native speakers out there who are taking English as a second language? That way we could skype and help each other improve our speaking skills! I've seen a few ib graduates who joined language exchange websites online when they were in ib but tbh those seem really sketchy to me. This way I know that it's a fellow ib student who has the same goals that I do, instead of some random 30 year old. Also if your not a native French speaker you could leave your native language below and the language you're studying, and if someone else matches oppositely with you then you guys could arrange something …

Hey everyone, I read through the English B EE guide and I'm getting confused with category 2b. Can laws fall under the category of an artifact? And am I allowed to write about specific social issues such as the integration of Muslim women into the British society and the influence of the legalisation of an alternative dispute body like Sharia councils under the Arbitration Act 1996? Or is it better to look at how British media portrays British Muslim women? Hope someone can help me! I'm so lost... I had an interesting EE topic but it didn't fit under the English B criteria.

Hey guys, I'm writing a blog post for my german b written assignment. I am just above the 400 word limit and i'm struggling to cut it down, however atm I am including the title and bits like "written by N. B. on December 25th, 2016" because it's a blog post and it supports the text type. Do these words count towards the final word count? If not it'll save my life haha. Thanks!

So I was wondering if there is much of a difference between HL and SL Chinese B except for the literature component in HL? I was recommended to take HL butt I don't think I can do it because Chinese is really difficult for me. And if I take SL, will that affect my future, like when I get a job and stuff? Just a thought though.

Hello! I'm wondering how everyone studies for Chinese B SL? I have only learnt Chinese for 3 years, from the start of 2015, and I will do it for IB next year. I have had no past experience with it, and I would really like to know how to study to be able to maximise my marks. I don't really know much about the exams, either so any knowledge about the that would help: I'm aware theres paper 1 and 2, but I'm not sure what's in those. Any tips for doing well in finals would be much appreciated. So anyways, please let me know if you have any tips, tricks or experience!! Thank you very much!

A friend of mine is going into DP next year. Her first language is mandarin but she had been in Canada for five years, and she is going to take English Lang Lit A. She is planning to take mandarin for her second language but our IB coordinator said she cannot because that is her first language. Does is matter what your first language is when choosing a course? And I had also heard some of the students from China is taking mandarin as their second language in other IB schools. Is it possible for my friend to take mandarin as her second language?

Okay, so in pre-IB we had the most amazing french teacher. She quizzed us at least once a week, forbade speaking English in the classroom, and really made us learn our stuff. Come grade 11, last year, our french teacher was offered a job elsewhere and our new teacher for French SL 11 was AWFUL. She has never taught IB, barely knows how to structure proper lessons, and on top of it makes mistakes on/doesn't know a lot of basic grammar herself. I am now halfway through my grade 12 year and nothing has changed. She hasn't taught us any grammar beyond the passé composé I learned in grade 10, and even that is starting to fade. No one in my class can truly put to…

Hi there, I am in Year 1 IB and I am doing French B SL currently, I have an average of 3 based on my assessments. I am not very good at French and it is bringing my average down. I was wondering what books or exercises are recommended to practice and study french. For example, I saw this book on amazon called "B French B: Skills and Practice (https://www.amazon.ca/IB-French-B-Skills-Practice/dp/0198390076/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481236684&sr=8-1&keywords=ib+french+b )and I wonder if it is helpful or not.
