Hello, I'm currently in DP1 and I'm the only one taking French B. I just feel like theres so much to know to be able to score decently, I'm really clueless as to how I can improve from my current level of french to a level of proficiency. I struggle alot to comprehend and speak french and it is very intimidating. I dont have anyone to practice french with either. Could someone give me some pointers as to how I can build a base for myself and get a good grip of the subject in terms of reading, writing and speaking?

I am doing PRE - IB now and I am planning for my subjects next year. I am a bilingual and English is my first language. For my Group 1 subjects, I recently applied for English A2, but the teachers recommended that I don't take an English A subject, because they think it will be too hard for me. I personally believe that's true. I honestly don't care about languages and so I don't like learning any languages in general, that includes English, but I do have decent English writing and analysing skills and in my MYP Language A I usually get 7s, often 6s and 5s. I was just wondering, whether I will be better off with ENGLISH B and that it would be easy for me to ea…

Hi, I study self-taught Hindi A SL, even though my native language is Marathi. My school did not inform me that a Marathi A self-taught course existed, so I had no option but to take Hindi. I can understand that this may be because not many students do it. Out of curiosity, Do you or someone you know do Hindi ? - or Marathi? I'm really interested in finding out which books/poems are studied.

Can an IB school offer a certain language B at the Diploma level without having to offer it also in MYP? Or must a school have to offer it throughout MYP and then continue into DP?

Hello! I'm entering the IBDP next school year, and I'm having a bit of trouble finalizing my second language course. I've been taking French for 3 years now, and it's not like I dislike the language or anything-- French is actually one of my best and favourite classes, and at one point, I even considered taking it at HL, but later decided against it. However, I also started taking introductory Japanese this past year, and I've also grown very fond of learning the language, too. I figured that if I chose Japanese ab initio, I would have an easier time with a year's worth of experience under my belt as opposed to starting it completely fresh. I'm not sure which te…

I'm currently in Year 1 of my IBDP and am doing a modified Japanese Ab Initio. Currently my grades are looking pretty good, I'm scoring 7s for Kanji and I have also increase my writing grades to around the same standard. However, every week my Japanese teacher makes us record ourselves speaking in Japanese for 4 minutes on a given topic that we are given about 5 minutes to prepare for. In these tasks I am scoring in a range of 3-5. I really want to improve this mark because I'm really passionate about this subject and getting higher marks in this subject will make me feel better about myself. If anyone has any tips it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I'm currently doing my written task for ab initio Japanese and I am having trouble finding sources. What are some good websites or places where I might be able to find sources? I have found several sources but they are all very kanji heavy, and my teacher says that they're too complicated and you can get marked down for using a source that is too complicated because it won't look like you understand it properly. Thanks :-)

Hello, I am in my second IB year. I am currently taking french b sl, but am really struggling on achieving a good grade. Since my first language is german, I would much rather swap the french b to german b, and thus achieve a better grade. The IB coordinator at my school said that taking a language b as self taught is not an option though. I have been trying to see the official IBO statement of this, but cannot find it anywhere online. In a few different threads, I read that some candidates did take a language b as self-taught, so why is my IB coordinator saying language b cannot be taken as a self-taught language? I'm really confused

Hi, I will be starting IB DP next year and I've been facing some issue with my choices for group 2. My choices were French and Spanish. I've studied French for 3 years, and now I am at phase 2 and still, I get 3s and 4s. But the reason why I get such grades is that I don't care about French and honestly I don't like learning languages. On the other hand, I have Spanish ab initio that I've never learnt in my life. Moreover, I heard that Spanish is one the easiest languages in the world and is quite easy in the IB. Thinking this through, even with myself weak at French I was thinking of choosing French ab initio (additional I was wondering if I can still go for French ab i…

Hey guys. I'm in IB2 and I've been learning Mandarin for about 3 -4 years now. I did learn Mandarin when I was a kid but I had forgotten everything because I moved away. The problem now is, I really want to increase the marks I can get for paper 2. The tips my teacher has given is to basically memorise sentences from the passages we have learnt in class, but the problem is that I really have a problem with memorizing things. It's pretty late at this point in time to try and make substantial improvements to my grammar and things like that so I'm in a really difficult place. Does anyone have suggestions/solutions? I'm currently sitting at a 5, I'd like to get a 6.

What are the complete list of languages that IB has written exams for? The Subject Centre on ManageBac lists more than the handbook I read, it seems (I could be wrong). I can never actually find the complete list. You could theoretically do one of these languages by yourself (outside of school with a native speaker) and then take the exam, right? Apparently, some people have done Language B self-taught. The language I’m thinking of doing may be not be offered but a similar language is so I was wondering. I don’t think it’s on Pamoja either.

Hello, I am about to submit my final draft of my French B written assignment. My word count is currently 418 (SL word count is 300-400), which means I am over the word limit by 18 words. I told this to my teacher at school, but she says I shouldn't worry about it. Which is why I was wondering whether going over the word limit by a bit is really okay like my teacher says or will this result in a one/two mark penalty? I have been avoiding the submission process as I am worried (I don't want to lose a mark for something as dumb as this)

I started ib about two weeks ago and almost everyone's taken AB. I already have prior knowledge since I did my GCSEs, but I've heard that B SL is quite hard, especially if youre not fluent (my case) So i was wondering if anyone could give some advice as to how I should prepare and study for the course and if it it would be too difficult for me? (since I'm not fluent)

Hi everyone! This is my first post on ibsurvivor. I was trying to find the answer to my question online for the past 2 days but couldn't find it. I also foolishly waited the due date to finish it up. I have everything written it is just I don't know exactly how the IB wants the written assignment formatted. I don't really like to blame my teachers for anything but my spanish teacher has been fairly off hands when it comes to the written assignment and didn't give me a direct answer as to how to format it. Can someone explain to me what the IB expects for the written assignment if I were to make an email chain? Thank you!!!

Hi! I'm a pre-ib sophomore and I'm new here. I need to decide my subjects for next year soon, and I want to make sure I choose the best classes for me. My main questions are what I should take for my sixth subject and whether I should take Math HL or Math SL. I plan on taking Bio SL, Spanish B HL, History of the Americas HL, Math SL or HL, English SL or HL, and French ab intio online or something else as a sixth subject. The only sixth subject options at my school I believe are Econ HL and Visual Arts HL. I found pamoja and saw that they have online options for sixth subjects. I love languages and want to study them in college. I am definitely going to take Spanish B…

Hey everyone, So I’m doing Chinese B SL next year and I’ve been studying proper Chinese since year 7 (prep school chinese was a joke). I was talking to a guy doing SL Chinese B this year and he said it’s harder than HL maths and physics. I know this is just one persons opinion but does anyone else find it this challenging? I’m just wondering. I always found Chinese relatively enjoyable and easy, although this year it got a bit boring as all we did was the Chinese made easy textbook every lesson. so yeah, is it that hard? Thankss.

Hey Guys! I'm new to this whole forum thing so please bear with me. So a few of my classmates and I are enrolled in the Pamoja French ab initio course although, we seem to be having a few problems with our teacher. Firstly, no matter what we do none of my classmates, nor I, can please our teacher when it comes to assignments. We have tried everything including sticking as close to the rubric as possible and even going so far as to create our own study group with native speakers to try and learn as much grammar as we can to add to our written assignments but even if we use advanced grammar we still get 70s and 80s. Here's the real kicker, we were quite suspe…

I wonder how much can you invent in the written assignment. Can you write for example the letter from one character to the other one after the book has ended and invent your own facts of how the life of that person looks like?

I wrote my first draft and was way over the word count because I had so much research on my topic and wanted to include it all. So is the written assignment more about just grammar, vocab, and being aware of other cultures rather than research?

Hello Everyone, So I will keep this short and hopefully, someone can answer my question. I am currently enrolled in the Pamoja French ab initio course and I'll admit I am not doing very well at all and am quite concerned about my progress. Also, the teacher we have is terrible. He is five weeks behind in grading, cancels lessons five minutes after they should have started, and all in all its just been a terrible experience. My question to you is this - Can I switch courses from French to Spanish? We are in week 11 of the program, however, I believe I should be able to catch up in the Spanish class as I had two years of beginner Spanish my Freshman and Sophmore years.…

Hi all, I'm in year 11 right now and I'm starting IB next year. In terms of Language, I'm gonna to take my mother tongue as a Language A Self-taught (which is Japanese). For Group 2 subject, I have no idea whether I should take English A Lang. and Lit. SL or English B HL. (I'm saying English A Lang. and Lit because I read it's easier than English A Lit.) I'm not a native speaker, so I know that English B would be much easier for me to get 7. Do you even think I can aim 7 with English A? I'm not sure about this because I heard that taking English A would be a big advantages if I want to enter the university in England. Is this true? Do th…

First, how does one achieve fluency in German? We are almost at the end of the first year of the IBDP and most people in the class do not feel confident about any of the final exams or internal assessments. I do feel somewhat confident and this lack of general confidence is in no way a reflection of our teacher, who is very dedicated and knowledgeable about German. It's just that most people don't have a strong background in the language (there are no fluent people in the class) and we didn't start the course with a good understanding of the grammar or a lot of experience in speaking German. I know people will say to use platforms like Memrise or Duolingo but is ther…

Hi there, I am in IB Y2 currently and I have a major problem with my German class. During the first year I had a German teacher who never had done IB before, was about to retire, and didn't prepare many materials for the class. We ended up doing 3 out of the 5 core topics, but not writing down or learning really anything throughout the year, except a lot of talking about it. Fast forward to this year and a new German teacher, and she tells me I am supposed to be on a C1/C2 (advanced/native speaker) Level but telling me I am at a B1/B2 (intermediate/upper intermediate) level currently. Also, she commented I am grammatically at a A2 (lower intermediate) lev…

Hey. I just started year 1 of IB, and not knowing what I was getting into, I chose French B SL. Now I don't know about any of your schools, but at mine, the French 10 teacher I was placed with was really really bad. They didn't prepare me or anybody in the class at all for this class, and now I'm completely lost. My teacher speaks maybe one or two English sentences per class, and teaches almost entirely in French. I don't understand what he's saying or what he's telling us to do at all. I understand that IB was going to be extremely hard, but I was prepared for the other subjects. The only subject that's actually scaring me right now is French.

Hi, i'm slightly confused as i'm taking French as a second language at my school, however for some reason only French B is offered as Group 2, but French Ab Initio is for some reason only allowed as a Group 6, however I am required to take Visual Arts as an HL, as i'm applying for Design in university and thus will require that class, should I just bite the bullet and take French B SL, or maybe explain this to my IB Coordinator or a School Counselor, as I haven't taken any french class yet, is there a MAJOR difference in French B or Ab-Initio (I'm from Brazil and I speak Portuguese, which is Romance Latin based like French, so I could understand SOME, not sure which to ta…

Hey everyone, I'm writing this as my school does not allow me to take my first language (French) as a B language while all other subject classes for B languages contain native speaker in them. to give a bit more informations I was born in France where I stayed and studied until Year 2 when I then moved away. From there I studied in a bilingual system where half my classes where un French and the other half in English, this lasted until Year 6. From there I completely stopped French and moved to a full English school where I once again did not study French. Last year I then joined the native French class to improve my French which with time has gone down hill. I …

I am currently going into 11th grade, and I am wondering which level of Spanish I should take. Ive taken Spanish for 4 years, and am not really good at languages (barely getting a B at the end of my 10th grade year and think that she is a bad teacher who is also the teacher teaching SL next year.) I heard that colleges will look down on me if I have taken 4 years of spanish prior and choose ab initio. Hi everyone, I've been extremely stressed out recently and I feel that I've made a terrible mistake. I'm currently taking Arabic A self-taught and I've quickly realized that although Arabic is my mother tongue, I haven't learned it in many years and therefore the curriculum is too difficult for me and I don't believe I can pass, and if I do, I would get a bad grade which I don't want. However, the other alternatives are German B and German Ab Initio. I should note that it is now nearly the end of IB1 and this whole year I've been doing Arabic. I want to switch to German, but because I have several years of experience in German, I feel that my school will object…
