Hi, I am currently working on my RI. I have picked Chinese Theatre, namely Beijing Opera as my theatre of tradition. However, I only have a play - The Flower Princess (cantonese opera) on hand. Can I use it for my play? I would like to ask is there anyone who is doing on this theatre of tradition too?

Hello, I am stating my research question for the RI in theatre arts right now, but I find it a little difficult to formulate a good question. I came up with this one: What are the instrumental and vocal techniques used in the songs in Bertold Brecht’s epic theatre play ‘Mother courage and her children’? is this a good research question?

Heyo, IBers. I'm wondering about my Art theme, because I want to do a body of work in Year 2 that deals with my story of mental health and abuse, all those icky things. I want to exorcise those particular demons, so to speak. Would this be an overshare? Is it just too heavy a subject matter for art class, or do you think examiners would be okay with that? The art is going to get made either way, it's just the question of whether it gets used for IB or not. Thanks preemptively for the help, team.

I want to know what we are allowed to use in our art projects. More specifically, if I wanted to use a Disney character or reference in one of my projects, is that legal? The artist I am researching does a lot of artwork for Disney, and I wanted to know if that's ok for IB. Would I have to give credit to Disney in some way?

Hello! (My name is Elder Price. And I would like to share with you the most amazing book * *) So I just saw the musical The Book of Mormon in the West End and I have to say that when I got out of it... They messed with my mind. I mean I find it great that they point out issues such as in the song Salt Laka Siti and are still hilarious but I feel that some songs were a bit long and some parts too exaggerated. (for eg in the song Hasa Diga Iboai, in the end the song gets old even if it's a few seconds). I'm gonna write about it in the topic of satire. If you've seen/read/studied the show could you give me your feeling about it? What struck you the most (costume, script, …

My IB HL Theatre class does a show every Spring. We usually do lesser-known, experimental plays and this year I'm looking for plays to do. I'm looking into doing something more well-known and less difficult for an audience to follow. Suggestions?

For a part of my project I need to draw or photograph a formal colour organic piece. One thing - I don't know what this means. I understand that organic basically means found in nature, so I need your help in confirming: Does this mean I would photograph or draw something that has natural colour? -so I wouldn't edit it in B&W? I wouldn't use charcoal, per say, to draw it? And I need you help in understanding Shaded/line negative space.. I just really have no clue for that one. It's my Christmas break right now and I can't ask my teacher. I don't need immediate replies but it's due in half a month so if ou have information that will help me I will take it!! Thank you …

Hi, I'm in a dilemma here. I'm currently in IB art SL, but I'm thinking about switching to IB music SL. Here's my reasoning: I've played piano for around 11 years, so I reckon that I have a bit of an edge to music in general. However, the art class overall has a very good atmosphere and I have a lot of fun in it. I think what I'm worried about mostly is the score ill get from the IB assessment. I'm not an amazing artist, but I'm decent enough. I'm also worried about the workload. Any advice or suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

So, I'm in my second year of IB Art HL. Last year I had a teacher who didn't know how to teach IB Art and never even ended up going to IB training, so neither of us really knew what I was supposed to be doing. I was also the only one who took the class, so I didn't have any support from people who'd taken it before. I only completed 7 pieces, and my workbook was less than impressive. This year, I have a teacher who has minimal experience with teaching IB Art, isn't so sure exactly what I should be doing, either, and has admitted that he doesn't really want to be teaching the class. While I can read a lot of rubrics and know what I'm going to be graded on, I don't really u…

Hi guys so this is my first post I don't exactly know how to use this thing but I hope I'll get the answer I'm looking for. So first off, I'd like to know what the easiest group 6 subject would be. Last year I took art for my IGCSE's and I was really struggling with the amount of projects that I had and I was finding it difficult to spend so much time on art and in the end I just gave up and went with the flow, not giving a flying **** about my grade (I don't think I even got a mark). Well this year I'm in the same position as two years ago and I don't want to make the same huge mistake of taking a subject that I don't need and wasting more time on it than is actually be…

Just curious as to see what people like in terms of certain composers, musical periods, or world music cultures. I personally adore the Romantic and Impressionistic Era. Chopin, Debussy, Mozart, Rachmoninov, and Saint Saens. Hmmm with world music cultures I really am liking Indonesian Gamelan and Spanish Flamenco.

So I'm in the process of writing my Film EE, I've waited a long time to start and need some outsider POV. My research question is: To what extent do the films Psycho, Scream, and Alien qualify into the horror genre? I researched all day today and got a lot of information on sound alone. Should I change my research question to "To what extent is sound used in the horror genre?" and then use those films, as well as others in my paper, or keep it about the three films? Thanks! -Dylan

So I have a few questions. 1. Am I able to use Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, Les Miserable by Victor Hugo, or Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy? I've heard that students weren't allowed to use books on the IB books lists but I didn't know if it was true, sooo. 2. Would this research question be okay to start with? I know I need to make it more specific but can I use it for a general question? How does the meaning behind (the work's name) by (the author's name) change in the movie performance? 3. Who would be a great advisor for this essay? I'm choosing between my drama/ ib theatre teacher, my IB English teacher and my TOK teacher. The thing is that m…

Clearly, there are students who benefit more so than others when taking HLA (the one where more emphasis is placed on your artwork). This is the class that my school automatically selects for its students. When I signed up for Visual Arts as my sixth subject, my decision was based off the fact that this wouldn't be the case, mostly because I feel I'm not that talented when it comes to artwork. I always assumed I would take HLB. Is my school allowed to do this? I asked my teacher, and she says that our school only teaches HLA and that HLB (or SLB) is something "totally different."

Hi everyone, I am currently doing my Musical Investigation assignment. I've been researching for a year through piles and piles of different pieces, but with the two that I am now analysing, I found that for one of them I cannot find score at all and my teacher cannot give assistance to that. The problem is that one of my pieces is Chinese folk music that is written for usage in a film, it is difficult to find a piece that match it well in terms of musical links and whenever I find a piece that I think is suitable, my teacher would disagree because it has "Western influence". According to him we are not supposed to have ANY influence from the West for our MI? I think that…

Hi guys, So started my IB1 a couple of days ago and I could really use some advice. My subjects are: Maths HL Visual Arts HL History HL English A2 SL Modern Greek A1 SL Physics SL I know that arts waaay too much work, but to be honest i'm seriously up for it, which is true history and maths too. (I've also done some stuff on maths, last year i took my GCE core maths 1,2 and 3, which have similar topics with the IB maths..) But whatever the case might be, they are all very difficult and time consuming subjects, and I also have to take my SATs and some subject tests Anyway, my question is, am I going to die?

Hi guys, So for the IPP, I want to design the costumes for my schools fall production of Rumors by Neil Simon. I am co costume crew chief and my partner and I have everything planned out. My question is what option (A: devising or B: Exploring) would this fall under. I am really confused about the options. My teacher says that it would be option A: Devising because I am doing a theater practice but from what I've seen online option A is only for directing a play. Can someone please tell me what Option would this be? Thanks a lot.

I've decided to go with an african piece (yet to be decided which one im using) because I'm more confident with talking about its characteristctics and analysing african music, but i don't know what i can link african music to, i was looking into irish folk music but i can't find a piece that has features such as call and response, or improvisation, or polyrhythms etc. maybe I'm not looking hard enough but i figured I would come on here to ask you guys. have any of you done an MLI using an african piece? what did you link it to? thanks x

Hey everybody, So this is my first post and I'm in need of a lot of help! My school recently lost our IB Theater teacher and the school promoted the other general Drama teacher to the position. The only problem is that the new teacher has absolutely no idea what he's doing. This isn't completely this fault as he is going to NY, USA in October for training and he only got 2 weeks of notice before being thrown into the ring. This being said, is their anybody who can list EVERYTHING that will be needed for both IB Theater SL and HL. Thanks for reading and possibly saving my behind for this. -Vallier, IB Diploma Candidate, Junior

Hey guys, I was wondering what the rules were to do with using music that we have not created in our Visual Arts films or pieces. My teacher has said it's fine, but when I was looking at the rules from other schools, they said it wasn't allowed. I'm not exactly sure how to approach this, because I don't have enough time to create my own audio for my work. Hopefully it's cool if I can use music and credit it, obviously.

So before I get the whole "you don't need a theme now" for art, our teacher wants us to do one. I'm thinking of doing something related to time. I really like history as well as futurology. I just thought of the idea but I'm not really sure if it's good or not. I really don't want to do the traditional "hey look a clock, things change over time" theme. I want to try and be original. Like we already started our first project where we make X (I think it's 9) variations on an object. I chose this dragon statue thing and already have four done (but I think it might be a total of 13, i really don't know. she's a new teacher). They were summer work so they didn't have one but y…

So I just checked my IGCSE results and received a C grade for Art and Design... The work I submitted isn't my best work because I finished them in a rush, but I still did not see that C grade coming.... I was expecting at least a B grade.....(My Art teacher at school always gives me grades A, B) School is starting in a week and I am not sure if I should still take Art... I received A* and As for my other subjects! At this point, I can only drop the subject entirely or continue to take it as a HL level..

Hey guys so i'm taking IB HL A, and since i'm into painting portraits and the like, does IB allow you to take an image off the internet (if you mentioned the source)? the picture i wanna recreate is a photograph of Eddie vedder, and i wanna zoom into one area of the piece and then recreate that on a huge canvas, and i'll used another technique to paint the picture to give it another value. So can anyone help me with the guidelines for studio work? Like the do's and don'ts?

My subjects are as follows: HL Maths HL Physics HL Economics SL Visual Art SL French SL English What I'm thinking of studying at university is either engineering, architecture, design, or some other science-based subject. I've been told that it would be a good idea to have art at HL because it keeps my options open, whereas economics is not a requirement for any course. I also understand that visual art is a subject which require a lot of effort, more so than economics in the amount of time you may be spending apparently. Yet for me, I would imagine that I'd already have to put in extra effort in maths HL. Would it be wise to take visual art at HL in my situation? Thank…

I was wondering what level of skill that the IB want demonstrated in a solo recital, as usual the mark scheme is quite vague, I was wondering if it was equatable to a specific grade (e.g. ABRSM Grade 6 etc.) I've asked my teachers and they're not certain, i was wondering if anyone here had any ideas? Also for the 20 minute recital is it important if your a little under? Thanks.

Hi guys, I've started my Musical Links Investigation (SL) and tried to draw links between two elements each of Scottish Folk Music and a Hindustani Classical Raga. After tons of researching, I think I've found the ideal links: 1. Microtonalities in Scottish music and Shrutis (basically a Hindi name for the microtone) in the Raga 2. Usage of the pentatonic in both forms But now I have encountered a slight problem. While I am able to find information for the Raga in abundance, I am not able to come across any relevant information regarding the following (which I need desperately!!) 1. The significance, use and purpose of microtones in Scottish Folk Music. 2. The purpose of …

I am currently doing my Research Investigation and I need some help in refining my research question. My topic is on the use of mask in Noh theatre and my current question is something along the lines of this: "How does the use of mask inform the development of a character in a traditional Noh performance of <insert play here>?" Should I be more specific and choose a character or two to focus on how mask is relevant to their characterisation? Is this topic achievable or am I getting off track from the aim of the RI?

Hi, I am taking currently taking visual arts HL but I started the IB very late and I have a lot to catch up especially for art. My theme was on world peace and I was trying to relate that to fashion. Another theme that I was thinking was traditions(Korean traditional art) expressed in a modern way. I really can not think of any kind of artwork that I could do for these themes. I'm not even sure whether or not these themes are ok to follow. Could someone give me some advice for my themes and what kind of artwork I could do? Thanks.

Our IB Music teacher has done very little in the way of preparing us to actual take the exam this year, and I'm starting to freak out a bit (or a lot) about how to write an adequate response on paper I. What sorts of things are examiners looking for in the responses? How specific are we supposed to get? What is an average length for high scoring responses? That kind of thing. We haven't done any writing all year, so I don't really know how to start preparing, and when I asked, I got very vague responses. :-( Thanks in advance!
