IB Visual Arts Workbook Guidance One of the biggest problems I have seen students encounter in their IB1 and IB2 with IB Visual Arts is their workbooks. For my Visual Arts HL course I am taking option B, therefore I focus mainly on my workbook rather than studio work. Below I wish to give advice on how to complete amazing workbooks pages that relate to your studio works. All of the information below is from my personal experience and from watching other IB students in visual arts who have received 6s and 7s for their final IB grade. Besides giving simple advice, I have reviewed the syllabus, and I will try to demonstrate how the advice and tips given relate to what is sai…

Hey there I definitely noticed that there is quite a lack of Theatre Arts students, or at least ones experienced enough to hand out tips and experiences. My exams are May 2012 so can't say that I'm am an all-knowing guru of Theatre Arts wisdom but I do have a teacher who has been teaching IB Theatre for a couple years and he's produced good results. Plus I'm just really passionate about it so it helps. So anyways more specifically this post is about the Independent Project Portfolio because I just finished mine and man was it fun, but a lot more work than I had expected and I hoped that I could offer up a few words of advice for any first/second years who haven't yet s…

Hey guys, I'm about to start IBDP next year, and I'm planning on taking Music as one of the art subjects. I just wanted to know wether it would be better to take it as SL or HL, What are the pros and cons? Also what can i do now to prepare for taking music as a subject and what can i expect?

Question in title. I have 20 days until I have to finish all my artworks, and I'm not too confident about the quality. Fortunately I'm in VA SL, if that helps my chances in any way. I'm in my school's second graduating batch, so we're not maximally prepared for the IB (I couldn't use any artworks from last year because they didn't fit into my coherent theme). I have no idea what my predicted grade for VA is because my school won't release them yet. Also, would a theme like "how alternative realities influence current reality" or "striving for an alternative reality" be too broad? It's a shame because I had a bunch of ideas for this that I was excited about but…

Hi! I'm very interested in game art and character design and would like to know if it's possible to use game art for my comparative study? If it is allowed how would I write about the artist since all i can find is the production studio.

Hello guys, I am doing my Visual Arts course, and I am not sure of the size of the pictures that we can use in the Comparative study. I have heard that the pictures should be of 1500 pixels. Is that true? If anyone has information regarding it, do share the source. Thanks.

Is there any way that I can check my composition work for plagiarism? If there is, I want to check mine because I'm getting paranoid... :( I mean I didn't copy any music but what if I accidentally did? How does IB check the students works? Is there any software for it?

Hi! from the beginning of the year I've been taking Ib visual arts. Its the most interesting class and I really like it. However, its really time consuming and I found myself in situations that I dont have time to take care of myself and have time for other activities. The workload is so much. I really like doing it and the outcome is really good however I am not sure if the cost of taking this class is worth it. After these couple of months i understood that even though i love art and creating art myself, i dont like doing it under so much stress and deadlines, so now im not quite sure if i want to pursue it as a career. However, i am and always will be an artistic …

I’m in the process of making my 4th piece for Visual Arts. I want to make a digital collage but there’s a problem, I have been thinking about using a short scene of a movie and cut the characters to paste them in my piece with a background behind, but I don’t know if the IB allows me to use part of a film to make my piece (I just want to use the characters of the movie). I really need to know if it is allowed to this, so I will appreciate any answer regarding this topic.

Hi, so I've had some serious about Visual Arts for nearly a year and a half, and I'm a little annoyed by the requirements, since I can barely understand what they are: 1. The media I use never seem to agree with my teacher, for example when I decided to use plain canvas and acrylic to make a studio piece (I've been using all sorts of stuff other than the usual, so I decided to something normal for a change) , she refused to accept because I wasn't experimenting with unfamiliar media. Any clue as to why she'd say that? 2. How big does a studio piece need to be to qualify as one? 3. Why not just focus on one particular media? I mean if I want to become an Il…

So I'm doing an amazing job at procrastination and last minute work. My process portfolio is due to IB sometime tomorrow (4/30/2020) and I've just started to type it up (I've had the scans in since Jan or Feb). And I'm realizing that I have literally no idea how to format it or what to even say. My DP1 art teacher wasn't actually that good at IB and she got replaced for my Year 2 but this teacher has never done IB before so I'm kinda on my own. Please help me or show me examples :)

Hello, I'm currently in the process of making IB course selection for next year and wanted to take IB music. I'm still not sure if HL or SL. I know the basics of music theory and can play both easy and complex guitar chords pretty well. I don't know much classical or "fingerpicked" pieces. Will I be fine to take the course?

Hey there, This is my first year of IBDP, and I've chosen Visual Arts at an SL level. We're already in our 3rd month of the course but our teacher is bit of a snob and frankly, I can't figure out what to do with this subject. I'm supposed to come up with a theme for all my SL artworks by monday, and based on that theme prepare a draft sketch of a installation we are supposed to make before December. I've thought about some theme ideas and this is what I could come up with: Desolation: How alienated and desolated we feel from our surroundings. Out of place: Being different from how society demands us to be. Wild Desolation: How animals are driv…

Hi everyone, So, I am a junior currently taking IB music SL. My situation is unique because I am the only person taking this course, and mostly am doing Independant study during my school's orchestra period. So I have no proper instruction or resources beside my old, outdated, textbooks. Besides my background in music and frequent practice on my instruments, i want more ways to practice and prepare for my exam at the end of the year. Any online resources or tips or anything that I can use to apply my knowledge would be helpful! Thank you for any responses in advance!

Hey guys! So I am trying to pick vocal pieces for my IA submissions for the 2020 exam year. Is there any genre that scores better than others on the IA or is it just how you play or sing the music? I'm not going to pull out Queen or anything but I was just wondering if all of it had to be classical or I could throw an art song or a more modern song in there. This is for my entire class as well because this is our first class taking the exams so if you have any pointers we'd greatly appreciate them. Thanks so much in advance for anything that could help!

I'm in 10th grade and I've figured out almost my IB courses: Lit and Lang Arabic B Global Politics Mathematics Physics Music I know I want to take lit/lang and glob. pol at sl but I am not sure whether to take Music or Arabic at sl. I already take music outside of school, play three instruments for 5-6 years, and have taken music theory and comp for 5 years too. I've heard that hl math and science are super difficult so with my previous experience, it might be an easier hl course. I know that I might want to pursue music in college, in addition to physics, so that would help, wouldn't it? I still think that music might be a waste of my t…

Hey everyone, I'm an 11. grade IB student with higher level subjects English, Bio, and Music. I really don't know how to study Bio and Music, because I came late to this school year, which is the reason why I've some gaps. Because of that, I've to catch up about 1.5 semesters on my own and I really don't know how to do it. Is someone here who has the same HL subjects and can recommend some study books or some useful tips? Thank you for every useful answer!

I put all the quotes together and divided aganist my total word count and it makes 3 percent of the overall word count. I am currently choosing an MLI topic to write about and I think I want to choose 20th Century composers like Rachmaninoff and then compare this to traditional Japanese music. Will these be too similar? They are from different cultures but could be considered the same genre as the Japanese piece was written for a western orchestra (there is an adaptation of the score for a Japanese orchestra which I would use) Thanks for you advice in advance.

HI, I'm currently in 10th Grade and I will be doing full IB next year. I'm having problems choosing between IB Dance HL or SL, or none and go with double science since I'm medical-oriented. I'm actually really really love dancing and would be fine if my teacher place me in either, but I don't know if it would be too heavy for me to take HL because of all the writings that I heard of, plus, if it's worth it or not. Please help !

I have no idea what artists to focus on for my Comparative Study. I started off with Joan Mitchell and Cai Guo-Qiang but then I found out I had to create artwork based off them, and I couldn't come up with anything, so I switched my artists. I'm using JMW Turner and Georgia O'Keeffe (solely because I like some of their artworks) but I still don't have any inspiration. I need new artists and art works that actually, like, inspire me, but I just can't find anything and our artwork is due at the end of the week. Do y'all have any artworks that you find really interesting?

Hi Guys, I chose to write an essay on, 'To what degree did the acculturation of European standards into the arts of the Yoruba people during British colonial rule destroy their indigenous visual culture depicted through their sculptures?'. First of all, I am not sure on whether this is a valid example to focus on essay on. My supervisor who is also an examiner said it was, but honestly I'm not sure. what do you guys think? Also is anyone willing to proof read my essay and crosscheck to see whether everything is in check because I kind of do not trust my feed up and I really think that my score for the extended essay shall be D.

So, I am doing my EE on theatre and I had a few thesis statements however my supervisor has told me that they're too broad and I need to be more specific. My original statement was : - "How does audience participation affect the Rocky Horror Picture Show" (or something along those lines), however, this proved to be extremely difficult to find any information on. My second question was then : - "How has immersive theatre changed the face of modern-day theatre", (again worded differently) however this was said to be way too broad and difficult to write about under the word limit. I was then advised to choose a specific theatre practitioner and think of…

So I'm doing my third CS now, and in spite of the previous two, I still do not understand what I'm supposed to do to satisfy each criterion. My teacher hasn't given me a very understandable explanation, and I have only a day and a half to finish it (I have NOT been procrastinating if that's what you're thinking). Could someone please give me an elaborate explanation of each criterion, and how I'm supposed to go about my Comparative Study?

My first artwork that would be going towards the exhibition and the IB is inspired/influenced by another artwork. I basically did copy it but the concept behind it would be slightly different and I'll be adding some objects (maybe a different colour) to the background of the portrait. Of course, I would be referencing everything and mentioning that I copied it but my only concern is, am I actually allowed to do this? I spoke to my VA teacher about the artwork and she said it's a great idea (I even informed her that the artwork has previously been completed by another artist), so I'm assuming that I am allowed. But I just want to make sure if it's really fine or I should j…
