So I am currently taking psychology SL. I don't like the subject, our teacher doesn't know ib psychology very well and the classes are just a mess. I also feel like I don't understand anything and everything just sucks. I was thinking of switching to visual arts instead if I'm allowed. Is that a terrible idea? Could I possibly catch up on their work? I know they haven't done a lot yet, and I'm also prepared to do a lot of work seeing as this is something I really want. Thanks in advance.

Hey, new to this forum! I have completed my SL musical investigation, and I was relatively pleased with my analysis. However, my teacher has said that my cultures are not different enough. I chose a 20th century concerto for a string quartet (british composer), against a Brazilian folk solo piano piece. They are fairly similar in many aspects, and I agree they are probably not different enough, but I was wondering if any of you are more informed than I about how much this will affect my grade? The mark scheme suggests I can only lose 3 marks from the choice of pieces out of 20, but any other advice will be greatly appreciated! Thank you

Hi, so I take Visual Arts HL (now Y13), and am preparing my artworks for exhibition 2017. Would I be in any sort of trouble if I published photographs, sketches, etc. onto the internet? For example, could Turn-it-in find it and penalise me (based on the same photographs, writing, etc.) even if the work was completely mine anyway? I understand that the IB is extremely strict when it comes to plagiarism, so I have refrained from doing so so far... but I had this idea a while ago because I think writing it out informally at first, maybe even presenting it online to an audience and getting feedback on techniques/processes etc. would be good for my final write-up/pro…

Hi, I am an IB student studying in Spain. I had some problems with the time management of the comparative study and was not able to fill the list of sources document correctly. I cited 7 websites in the comparative study, but only included 5 of them in the list of sources. Do you think because of this examinors will penalize me?

So, I'm an SL Music student and I'm starting my musical investigation. I'M STUMPED!!! Anyone got any topic ideas to share? Or something to get me going? My only possible topic idea is Irish folk music, and if I needed to be more specific, I could say from the 1800's. I have NO reason for using that, it just came up one day. Help???

I'm thinking of doing my EE in the subject of music, however my school doesn't offer any IB official music classes. I have a supervisor who knows about musical theory, and I know a bit as well, but I don't know what I'd be missing if I don't have an experience in an IB music class. What do they expect? What should I be sure to mention when writing my EE? I've been thinking of transposing and analyzing a jazz standard recording played by different musicians and then comparing them, would this be a deep enough topic or should I be looking else where?

Hello! So for my art exhibition, I have a piece that features a neon sign with a quote. I designed the quote, the size, color, everything. The company I went to just created the glass neon words and then sent me everything separately. I had to piece everything together myself, from the screwing of the studs that would keep the glass words in place to deciding where all the letter supports would go. I also had to figure out wiring and fitting the plastic cables. Now, 2 days before my exhibition, my teacher is telling me that this can't be counted as a final piece, as I didn't physically make the glass tubing myself, and instead, only the designs could be counted. All …

Hi guys, I'm a MYP student in Pakistan and I'm having a bit of trouble with my Art e-portfolio. It clearly states that the maximum word limit is 2000 words and the page limit is 30 A-4 pages. However, on the next page of the guidance book it offers some recommendations on how we should structure our portfolio. For e.g, task 1 should be of 10 pages and have 650 words with only 5 images. Do we necessarily have to follow this because I have 1000 words in task one, very few words in task 2 and three and 400 words in task 4. This totals up to 1650 words. Would this not be marked by the IB? Do I have to structure it out like the IB has told us or is it alright to hav…

MLI Advice

Hey everyone! I'm starting to think of topics to do for my MLI, but I don't know how to go about choosing my topic. I'm interested in the romantic and jazz genres, but I'm not familiar enough with either to know two good pieces with strong links to compare. I really like the piece Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Rachmaninoff, but am not sure what the jazz piece would be. Besides comparing two pieces from the romantic and jazz genres, I was also considering doing a comparison between a minimalist piece and African music, where one of the focus could be on cross-rhythms. Again, I'm not as familiar with either genre so I'm not so sure about what pieces…

Ok so I'm stuck in a really annoying situation in my arts class. Basically over the course of the past year I've been producing pieces (mainly photographs) that include nude models and have encountered a few problems with my school when I expressed that I wanted to include these photographs in my final exhibition. Basically I was told to alter the pieces or I wouldn't be able to submit them. Whilst I understand they probably want to appease everyone (teachers, parents who may see the exhibit etc.) and avoid any sort of social faux pas, frankly, I found the experience to be patronizing both towards myself and the potential audience. Even more so because the images aren't…

I have a question about the comparison between both works for prescribed works in the exam. I was searching the format of IB music exam, and I found out that the comparison questions for prescribed works have been omitted from 2015 past exam for SL. Can anyone tell me if my information is correct? Thank you sooooo much if you can help me out!

Who grades the comparative study, process portfolio, and exhibition? Is it similar to IA's in other subjects, where your teacher gives you a grade and other examiners just moderates it? Or is it different?

Hi there! I'm i year 2 and I'm really concerned with the Visual Arts Investigation Workbook requirements. Last year I was doing my portfolio (sketching, writing, and comparing artworks here). Since we need to make screens with our scanned pages, I thought that we will only need to retype the text by computer and add it to the screens. However, a month ago, my teacher told us that investigation workbook is not the same as portfolio and that we shouldn't retype the text when making screens but evaluate on how we were doing the portfolio, and add even more text and even add some sketches done with computer... The problem is, I've written really much text in my portfolio…

I am starting the IB program and i took Art HL, because I was always interested in it and really enjoy drawing. Before I did IGCSEs, but didn't take art. However over the summer I had private art lessons and I am totally OK with working and learning A LOT. How hard will the course be for me and what are the general requirements for students who are taking IB art?

Hi, guys! So currently I am already in my 2nd year of IB, and I am very worried about my IA/solo performing. I have been playing the piano for quite some time, started since I was around 3 years old (I've been playing for more than 13 years), but the problem is I have been very lazy and have only picked it up seriously around two years ago. My piano skills are okay, I don't play classical so I do not take ABRSM exams, but according to my teacher my technical skill level at the moment should be around Grade 6-ish. The pieces I can and currently learning to play is All of Me by Jon Schmidt (The Piano Guys), Divenire by Ludovico Einaudi, and I am currently l…

For the Visual Arts HL Comparative study can one use animation or picture books? I was thinking of focusing on art in childhood, and the things that influence us throughout life, such as Disney, Studio Ghibli, Dr. Seuss, etc, but do these things count under film or literature, not visual arts? And, can I use film stills or certain pages in picture books, and possibly reference repeating symbols throughout the rest on the book and movie, or should I just find normal visual art pieces that are influenced by these things? Thanks!

Hey! So this year i am going into my second year of IB. I still don't have a theme that i want to stick to for art. It would explore the different formats of art, like conceptual art, surrealistic art, photographs etc...

Hey guys, since I had to upload my comparative study in a rush and I did not reference my work in the comparative study, I was wondering how much Ib penalises you for not referencing the work. I know that they are quite harsh with the extended essay, but I mean the comparative study was just introduced this year, so perhaps they are not that harsh? :/

Hello! I need urgent help regarding my topic for my music HL MLI topic. I initially chose Voiles by Debussy vs. Xe Chi Luon Kim, a Vietnamese folk song. I couldn't find any links however. Then I talked to my teacher and she suggested to research for music that fits the Vietnamese folk song. Anyone have ideas? I cannot find any. Maybe even a whole new MLI comparison? Thank you! So I was planning on going to Art Hl, since I like analysing art but I am not really that good at drawing and painting. I can draw what I see but not so much when I imagine things. Basically I want to know what kind of requirements are needed to do Art Hl? Like do you need to be naturally good at drawing for the course and so on?

Hello! For my math ia I'm working with the relationship between math and music and I need someone to explain to me what a MIDI note number is. Hi! I'm struggling to find a theatre theorist that I like for my solo piece. Would Lin Manuel Miranda (author, actor and composer of Hamilton in Broadway and other various plays) be considered a theorist? He hasn't specifically written a theory but interviews about how he works have been published and he has a very obvious pattern. Would the IB penalise me for choosing someone as "modern"? Thank you!!

Hi all, So I'm now half way through my final year and I am the only IB Art student in my grade, my teacher seems to know absolutely nothing about the IB and keeps telling me to do it similarly to the OP system the other students are doing (a Queensland education programme, Australia). I can't help but feel like my comparative study is completely wrong, but the IB being the IB theres practically no help online that I can find. I am very worried about failing the IB due to the lack of any help at all from my teacher. If anyone knows anything about the CS or has any tips about IB Art, I would love to hear them. Thanks.

Hi guys, I may be taking Music HL as one of my subjects and am just curious on the level of difficulty and required skill in music to achieve a 5, 6, or 7. I'm really passionate about music and would really love to learn more about it. If I'm not able to carry the workload and do sufficiently well, I'll drop it to Music SL and bump up my Geography to HL. 1) I don't really have a background in music theory and have never really studied it in depth, so is that going to be a problem if I take music HL? Concerning instruments, I can play the guitar and piano, both of which I learned how to play on my own through the internet. For guitar, I'm able to play songs…

I just got done with my IB music solo performance on flute and there were a few issues. 1. In one of my pieces with piano accompaniment, my pianist missed a page turn in the first movement and so I had to play the last minute and a half or so of the movement without accompaniment, even though it was supposed to be accompanied. There were no spots in there where I had rests, in case that matters, so I was playing the whole time. 2. As a result, I had a false start of the second movement because he wasn't ready with his accompaniment and played probably 4 notes before stopping myself and starting for real with my accompanist. 3. My whole recital ended up bein…

I'm starting my musical links investigation and I'm having trouble picking a second song to compare. For my first song I have picked Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Waltz. Could anyone provide tips for approaching and completing the Collaborative Project (in Theater HL)? To what extent does the student present their research into the approaches used by a professional company that creates and stages original pieces of theatre? Hi everyone, My school had someone last year who got a 7 in Visual Arts HL, and you know; good for them! I saw their work, and they submitted these amazing realistic works that I honestly was in awe in seeing for the first time. Yet, it was admitted by my Visual Arts teacher just this year that the technical skill she exhibited wasn't true to her ability, she traced over photographs of some people. Now, I know for some people drawing is something that is much harder than sculpture, photography etc... For me though, it is literally what I've spend a lifetime working towards, drawing and doing it realistically (love cartoons though!). I felt at little chea…

Hello! I am trying to start my Independent study but can't seem to find a topic. I was thinking of looking at how the directors in The Royal Tenenbaums, Amelie, and Little Miss Sunshine use film techniques to develop the protagonist and build their relationships with other characters in the film. However I'm not sure if I should write about that because it isn't very original and seems vague. I don't know, I just need someones opinion on it and maybe some suggestions of what I should do.

Basically, our art teacher didn't tell us much (I don't think he knows a lot about it himself) and I was just wondering how other people around the world are getting on with it (I personally haven't even started mine and the first draft is due on the 1st of September, so I am starting to get a little freaked out)
