Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hey my friend needs help for her extended essay! This is what she said:
I was thinking of analyzing the Twilight series for my EE and also comparing Stephenie Meyer to other authors that use the gothic theme. What im wondering is how do i research on this topic??? ---------- I've actually tried it before by linking Twilight to Wuthering Heights. But, it's too hard; even my teacher said that. Because, I was thinking of comparing the gothic theme which is present within Twilight and the classics - The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, Dracula by Bram Stoker and The Mysteries of Udolfo by (forgot w…

Hello. I'm new to this , and I was wondering If I could get a little help on a Research Question. My topic is on The political causes of the Nigerian Civil War, 1967-1970. I'm currently doing some research, and one major aspect f the causes of the war spreads from ethical conflicts between thee tribal groups in Nigeria; the Yorubas, Ibos, and Hausa-Fulani, among the secession of The Republic of Biafra. So far, I came up with one research question based on this: How did the ethical conflicts between the Hausa- Fulani, Yoruba, and Ibo Tribal groups contribute to the Nigerian Civil War? I'm mostly sure this is kind of broad, but this is my first attempt at …

Hello everyone, i am in 11th grade starting my EE, I was thinking about doing it in biology and i came up with a few ideas. First of All, I love animals and i thought i could do something with them... I was thinking of looking into animal mutations and the cause of the DNA changes, how and how did it affect the evolution of that species. Then i checked if i can investigate the mutation animals in Chernobyl caused by radiation but there is not enough information and also the animals there have not been affected as much as expected. Im trying to think about more ideas in that topic and i would like if you can help me think about them... thank you very much Doron

Hey, We have to hand in our proposals till friday nd im pretty positive i want to do my ee in art (which i take as a hl) or english a2 (which i take as a sl coz i didnt want to take 4 hls). I want to study interior design, communication design, communication design or something relating to media. Therefore i want to relate my ee topic to media. But i really cant think of any topics, especially not for english a2 because we havent covered the cultural option (which is media) yet but i already have to hand in my proposal. For art its similiar, I'm interested especially in contemporary art, interior design, advertisement and graphic designt but cant think of a good topic. M…

Hey all. Have started my Extended Essay, I'm doing it in history and my research question, so far, is: "How did WW1 contribute to the rise of "flapper fashion" amongst the women of America in the 1920s?" Is this a narrow enough topic? I have been told by my supervisor to narrow it down, however i am not quite sure how to approach this. At the moment i am covering the main points of: WW1 leading to female emancipation and equality WW1 creating a positive economic atmosphere within America and WW1 changing the spirit of the American public, focusing the fashion ideals into the "flapper". I have also been advised to avoid "descriptive" and "narrative" es…

Well, I'm currently in IB1 and trying to start working on my EE just to be prepared in time for the summer. I have decided for the topic which is to be about the powers of creation in J.R.R. Tolkien's "Simarillion", and in David Eddings's "The Redemption of Althalus". With the Powers of Creation, I mean a closer look on the two myths of how each world was created, and who was responsible for doing it. For example: In Silmarillion you have Illuvatar, and the creation of the life-giving music. Whereas in the Redemption, you have the three siblings: The Creator, The Keeper, and the Destroyer. What I'm asking is whether you think it is a good topic, and, if anyone h…

I am just getting into my EE (no, i'm not a slacker, but I think my school is), and I was wondering what you think of my proposed title: "Will GPGPUs replace traditional CPUs in the near future?" I have never taken a formal CS class, but my dad is a hardware engineer with a Master's, my advisor is a coder, and I am surrounded by CS people. I also realize that the format of this question is nearly identical to the CS example. Is this a good proposal? Is it possibly too hard to get an A on?

Hey everyone I'm thinking of doing my EE on something like demons, but am having difficulties deciding exactly what I should do. I'd like to do something along the lines of "Were demons created do help or hinder the human race?" Keeping in mind the whole "If God is benevolent etc. why did he create evil?" argument, as well as how they can be used as scapegoats for a lot of our problems. I'm still quite confused, though. Help?

Hey. I'm just starting my EE proposal and I am still confused about what an appropriate topic would be. I know that I want to do Biology but i'm not sure if my idea would be do-able. I'm interested in the growing acidity of the oceans and have done some research. I can go to both the atlantic and pacific ocean this summer, so I have it available to me but I don't know if I should go into that topic. Does it seem realistic?

Hi! So, after changing my EE subject twice, I have now landed at English A2. I want to use the book "Virgin Suicides" by Jeffrey Eugenides. I don't really know what to focus on, but I am thinking of focusing on the "oppression" / over-protection that slowly drives the fives Lisbon girls to commiting suicide. (Or if I can, in some way, get in the fact about Surburbian lifestyle in this EE.. Well don't know about that though.) However, I want to compare this book with another. That's the initial problem. I know the theme of oppression is extremely common, but I can't think of a book. I wanted to compare with Thérèse Raquin by Émile Zola, but not essentially because…

This is the first and hopefully the last time I'd need to ask for help. Anywho.. I've done my EE in Math and to be specific, I've proven Kepler's three laws of planetary motion to be correct. Kepler's laws of planetary motion state: “All planets move in elliptical orbits with the Sun at one focus.” “The radius vector drawn from the Sun to a planet sweeps out equal areas in equal time intervals.” ”The square of the orbital period of any planet is proportional to the cube of the semimajor axis of the elliptical orbit.” Basically, I introduce planetary motion and the models presented by the different astronomers, then I introduce Kepler's laws and prove them Mathematically…

Hello everyone! I'm in IB1, and our EE proposals are due this week! So far my main topic idea is "Themes of magic and dreams in Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’", and I need a novel to compare this with, but nothing is coming to mind. Hi. I'm in Year 1 IB and I'm supposed to have picked my extended essay subject and hopefully topic by the end of March. I wanted to do my EE in Biomedical Engineering cuz that's what I wanna do and so I think it would be good to get a taste of it before I have to pick what i wanna do for university. I didn't know if this would qualify for a physics paper or even what's required for a physics EE, also, it's nt exactly a subject area at school so I didn't know if that would be really bad. So yeah. This is my research so far: I studied the winners of the 15 most recognized Literature Prizes around the world. I found just four of them give awards to works written in a different language than the one of the country which hosts the prize (I didn´t include Nobel, I just picked locally organized prizes). Thus, as there are more resources to publish and remunerate the winners of prizes awarded by Europe or North America, the prizes given to American or Asian writers in their country are not enough to give them an international projection. The prizes given to American or Asian writers outside their country only happen after the authors are sold worldwide, and this us…

I am sort of puzzled at the moment. I want to do my EE in English A2, but since English B is also part of the Group 2, I am apparently doing my EE in English B? This undermines my English skills tremendously, I think, and I would like to inquire whether anyone knew how universities feel about this? Will it look bad if I did my EE in English (Group 2)? Do they even distinguish between A2 and B in the official papers, by the way? Sorry if I'm being confusing, I am just nervous as we are almost in the process of choosing our EE topics!

However, this topic has been extremely delved in to and my advisor is telling me I need to be extremely cautious. Would you suggest I choose another topic altogether or stick with my current one but make sure I use my own analysis? Cats' spontaneous remission is a puzzle to veterinarians, according to some I have spoken to. According to the research I have done for the topic on the internet, weightloss and certain types of insulin can contribute to remission of diabetes in cats. In Austraila, Burmese cats seem to be most prone to diabetes, but not in other countries. I am curious as to if there is also a genetic factor in the remission of diabetes in cats. As remission is uncommon in dogs and humans, I am curious if an application can be made to diabetes in humans. However, I don't know if there is a genetic factor, so if I find that none exists based on my research, does this mean my topic is inval…

hey guys! my original experiment for my bio ee was to give people a can of coke (classic - the red one?) and then measure their reaction times and blood pressure over a period of time (say a few times in about an hour) caffeine is considered to be a stimulant and it is usually consumed daily. but i figured i could give caffeine to those who normally drink caffeine and i wouldn't be changing anything major but then he (being my supervisor) said that by doing that i was changing and interfering with their daily routines as caffeine can have psychological effects, and the IBO doesn't like that... so, my question is: is it true? caffeine can have both positive and negat…

My extended essay is on Psychology. I'm comparing students' personality types and comparing it to their class achievements to see whether the two are related to each other. The personality type test I used was the MBTI, so the extended essay is basically checking if (for example) you have a ISTJ personality, does that mean your grades would normally be higher than a person with an ESTJ personality type? Of course, it's comparing all the different 16 personality types, and explaining it gets a little hard, but anyway. I have all the data, all the personality types and the corresponding class achievements, but now I'm supposed to compare them using a statistical tes…

Hello, I am trying to find a good topic for my EE. The thing is that I already have a very specific English EE topic, but the number of English EE handed in is so huge that I am worried they would find it too redundant. Well-done math extended essays do reputedly better than well-done English ones because: 1)There's a clear answer and there's nothing as 'your opinion' (at least at our level) and 2) Nobody chooses mathematical topics, so they don't have crazy standards. But if I were to do math, what type of topic would be suitable and what area would you suggest I focus my research on, so that I wouldn't pick a) something incredibly complicated b) something that …

Just to give some background information about me: I just started IB Year 1 one and a half months ago and we need our EE topic selection (+ research question) by December. I am choosing to do a Music EE because I have a lot of experience in Music (Grade 5 Harmony for RCM if there's anyone from Ontario) and I think it would be really neat. Now I already talked to my Music teacher at school who will be my EE Mentor, and he first suggested me to go to a local library, and basically start listening through different scores of music to find which ones I would like the most to analyze. I am Polish, so I think it would be cool to do my EE based on Chopin, and some of his works. …

Hi, I want to do an English A1 EE on Faulkner. I just need some advice. Is it better to do a comparison between two of faulkner's short stories? For example Carsonne and A Rose for Emily. Is it too short so it'll be hard to write an EE? Also, when the EE guide says to use outside sources, can I use the internet? Or is it better to find actual books from other people that commented on the stories I will be using? Thanks in advance =)

I have written all of my extended essay, which is in math, but now I have to print it out and turn it in. It pretty much abuses my printer since I need to print out three copies, so I want to make sure that I get the format right before I click print. I think that the format for Math is not as strict when it comes to EEs as it is in other subjects, but is there any suggested format? If not, are there any general guidelines, such as name and candidate number on the top right and page numbers in the bottom right, or what? Does the Extended Essay have to be written in a specific format? I always thought that it was supposed to just be in a regular research paper format (many of my classmates think the same). Now it seems that it needs an abstract, contents page, separate introuction, and some other stuff. I have no idea what these are or how they are supposed to be written.
