Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hi..So I've decided I want to do my EE on Afghanistan. Right now, the question I have in my mind is: "To what extent does the Taliban still control Afghanistan, economically, socially, and politically?" I realize they don't run the government anymore but I think they have still have influence over a lot of facets of Afghanistan. What do you guys think? (it's a history ee I guess..)

Okay this might be a really stupid question but my research question for my EE is: To what extent was Truman justified in dropping the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? My teachers have told me that this is a good research question and all and it really does interest me but I'm afraid it's not unique enough for the examiners. What do you guys all think?

I'm only in my first year of IB, but want to get a topic sorted out ASAP. If you do it in English, could you focus on actual language/grammar rather than literature? For example, i was thinking of doing something about Australian colloquiallisms and slang... is that sufficient for an EE?

So, at my school we have to definively choose a subject and be approve before starting the EE. idk if that's the same elsewhere. I've pretty much narrowed it down to Math or English. I WANTED to do physics, but can't b/c we don't know who our physics teacher will be next year. Recommendations? Math or english?

Hey world, I'm new to this forum. This is the thing, I really really want to do my EE on a topic relating to Equine physiology (horses). I'm struggling to think of anything I can do, but it is really what I have interest in, as well as what I want to do in life, which is why I chose to do my EE in Biology. I have plenty of horses to observe, and possibly do (obviously unharmful) testing on, if I ask extra nicely . I also have a friend who owns two horses, who I can observe and study at will. Ideally, I want something that doesn't involve too much spending on equipment. I'd love it to be by observation, but understand there has to be some experimentation as well. So,…

Marlon Brando ()/Movie Stars from 40s, 50s, 60s So, I really like Afghan culture, language, etc...but I don't know what research question I could pose? Perhaps it could even be political..Any ideas? And then, there's Marlon Brando..I really enjoy his acting, etc..I feel that movies from his time, including his own, made the viewer truly connect w/ the story whereas today, when I watch movies I feel like "ok, this is a movie..nothing is drawing me in, i don't feel a part of it" Any ideas? Alright, so we got introduced to our Extended Essay very recently I've been thinking about what subject I would like to do my EE in, and here are a few of my thoughts: BIOLOGY or CHEMISTRY - I am taking Biology SL & Chemistry HL - I wish to study Biology & Chemistry after high school - I know teachers in these fields that would be willing to help - I think that finding a place/lab to do my experiment over the summer would be a hassle - I'd rather spend more time writing the essay/ researching than looking for a place to do experiments in ECONOMICS - I am taking HL Economics - I know teacher in this feild that would be willing to help - only if I ask that teacher …

i really want to do my EE on this question that has puzzled me for years, but what would it be under? okay, it kinda sounds weird, but when i read a book, especially for fun, i hear the charecters voices in my head. depending on how descriptive the author is, it can vary from a general narrator and indistinguishable charecters, think like a radio station, to detailed mental images of the charecters as well as their distinct voices, think movie in a theater (or IMAX if you know what that is, i'm not sure if it's international). so when i asked whether my mom heard the same (trying to confirm to myself that i wasn't losing my mind) she said she did. yet my younger brother a…

I've decided to write my EE in English B and I have had a quite hard time to come up with a subject. I thought about writing how and why english is used in many foreign-language commercials/advertisements (eg. Japan and big parts of the rest of Asia); but I had trouble finding sources so I just skipped that topic). Therefore I hope that you could help me formulate (find) a suitable question. Spoiler - Click me! Just recently I thought I'd write about Starbucks (eg. compare its expansion to Mc Donalds expansion (in the 50s/60s)).It's just that I don't know exacly what to write about. I need to present this to him next week. ;-; Here are the topics I've been reading that are interesting on to get background info: - jeremiad sermons during the Enlightenment - Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation - the Catholic Church's role on the European witch craze during the 16th and 17th century - the My-Lai Massacre - the years leading to the American Revolution

Ok so I need help coming up with an argument statement/research question for my essay. I'm thinking about doing it on either history or geography. I would like to do it over US and Mexican immigration or the effects that immigration has on border towns. I want to discuss how immigration can cause problems in different border towns and other various places in the U.S. Another idea of mine is discussing the history of Mexican immigration to the U.S. and the differing view points on immigration.. I'm not exactly sure how to phrase the question or in which category it falls in. Please suggest some ideas! I would greatly appreciate it! Also is this topic over used?

Hi, I'm working on a Literature EE under Group 1, in the second category (comparing two novels, one of which must be in the spoken language (English for me)). I've chosen Ethan Frome (English) and the Woman in the Dunes (originally in Japanese). Ethan Frome seems like a well-worn novel as far as IB goes, but I haven't come across anything on TWITD, which is part of why I chose to compare the two instead of trying to make a common topic new. At first glance the novels seem really different- their authors, settings, and styles are nearly opposite- but I'm investigating how they are similar in terms of how Wharton and Kobo Abe use imagery and symbolism. More specifically, ho…

I'm doing my history EE on "The impact music festivals had on society between 1967 and 1985." Now, I'm using festivals such as Monterey, Woodstock, Altamont, Live Aid, and Farm Aid.... is that too spread out ? I'm going for the evolution of it i guess in some ways because Monterey was the beginning of the festival movement and was in some ways a charity and live aid and farm aid were charities.. so im showing the impact and evolution of it from the first festivals being more of "all about me" and the later festivals "all about you," if that makes sense. So i guess i was just curious to see what everyones thoughts were on that and if its too broad or whatvever thank you!

I'm doing my EE in English, and my topic is a little hazy and rough right now...I'm comparing the dystopia of 1984 (George Orwell) with the utopia of The Giver (Lois Lowry, 1990s). As of now. My EE Supervisor isn't that pleased with my topic though, she thinks that The Giver is too simplistic as a novel. Is my topic too broad? I'd be covering the similarities and dissimilarities, such as 'Repression of language in order to curb thought', and 'repression of sexual instinct, love, and family circles' and 'governance of an omniscient body' as well as the obvious features of the societies. I'd just like your thoughts on this.

Please tell me if the idea is suitable. It would be greatly appreciated, as I've spent about 5 weeks thinking of a topic. I would be very unhappy if It were to be horribly unsuitable, but also I want some feedback/critisism on the topic. I'm thinking of looking at the theme of fear and how the things that usually trigger fear, have been altered over time. I'm specifically thinking of looking at Bram Stoker's Dracula and Stephanie Meyer's Twilight. Not altered, CHANGED is a better word there.
