Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hi there, So I'm doing an english extended essay comparing a rap artist's lyrics to a contemporary poet's poems and just comparing and contrasting. But I'm wondering a little with citations on how exactly I should go about some tricky aspects. I'd like to note that I am using the MLA format for my bibliography and citations. First of all, When putting citations, obviously for scholarly articles I put the author's last name and then the page number like this (Smith, 9) But I'm wondering if the comma should be there or not. I know it's a knitpicky thing, but I would hate to lose points on such a small aspect. Another question more important question, I have several poems, …

My first draft of my EE is due in a couple of weeks, and I'm panicking a little as I still have to write another section of my EE, the intro, and the conclusion but the word count is already around 10000 words which I know is just crazy. I am comparing the use of dramatic irony in A Doll's House and The Crucible and what I did was show all the uses of dramatic irony in each act, so I have so many words because of all the uses of dramatic irony so I'm cutting out all the smaller examples of dramatic irony but what I'm worried about is that the examiner will think I have a limited understanding of the books and did not research enough as I'm not examining all the uses of dr…

Hello I'm writing my English B Extended Essay. Um my English is not very good. For writing, its not that bad but I often heard that my essay are unclear in meaning, imperfect in grammar, and includes awkward use of vocabularies. I wonder if my English will affect my Extended Essay..since it is English B Extended Essay. If it does, how much will be affected?? And one more question. I've read one of best 50EE selected by IBO, and I highlighted some sentences which can be useful for my essay. Can I copy this in my essay? I dont mean I'll copy idea or the whole sentence. its hard for me to explain this so I wrote down examples below. ex: this essay provides a investigation…

I have a couple of questions to ask, and first one is regarding my research question, which is "Is adaptable user interface a better alternative to managing the interface complexity than adaptive user interface?" Should I talk about adaptIVE user interface at all? Is the adaptable user interface a broad enough topic? (I'm quite lost as to how broad of a topic this is..) I just thought that it might be easier to draw conclusions if I compare the two. If so, in what aspects can I compare those two in? And if not, should I go more into the human-computer interaction rather than discussing the user interfaces themselves? Another question is about others' research papers that…

My topic is a theme present in the two plays I deal with and so bearing that in mind, I wanted to ask whether I could focus on all the characters in my essay or if i should just stick to the protagonists. My teacher recommended using only the protagonists, but I feel I would get a lot more examples to support my arguments if I used all (and besides the protagonists are the most boring characters ever). Does that spread me too thin, though?

So I've decided to do an extended essay in mathematics and how definite integration can solve general problems. I talked to my mentor about this topic, and she suggested that I narrow that down to how definite integration can solve problems in a certain field, so I chose physics. However, I decided that was still too narrow, so I narrowed it again to "How can definite integration solve problems posed that involve mechanical work?" I think this would be an appropriate topic for the EE because I glanced over the official IB guidelines and it said "the applicability of mathematics to solve both real and abstract problems", so I think that this topic would be acceptable. Wh…

Hello everyone... If possible, I would highly appreciate some feedback and discussion on my Computer Science Extended Essay topic that I am planning to choose. Is data storage in mobile phones and computers the same? I thought that I could carry out a survey on three groups of people... Computer Science Students Computer Science Teachers Computer Science Professionals The questions for each group would vary. Students would get simple yes/no answer questions and professionals would get questions with more discussion. I am using a survey because I was told that analysis is necessary in an Extended Essay so I thought I could analyse the results of a survey that I would condu…

Ok, I want to write my essay on how the Japanese government has only allowed whitewashed versions of past events like WWII, the invasion of Manchuria to be written in textbooks. I mainly want to compare the differences between American and Japanese textbooks on those past events where they fought against each other. My question is: How will I go about researching this with little japanese knowledge? Is this a good topic at all? Can anyone help with some possible organization? I'm thinking about organizing it according to the world events. Any help will be greatly appreciated

Ok i bin thinking for my EE to find via a method i myself create to find the value for a specific physical constant (Gravitational constant, finely structured constant, plancks constants, e.g.). I think it would be a good way to combine my love for theoretical physics which i no ussually gets marked badly with a more experimental area that gets marked better. I'm just wondering what you think about this idea and any suggestion for constants that i could find values for.

The following are potential topics for my Psychology EE: Influence of culture and language on cognition (or education) Is there a genetic predisposition to obesity? Are first impressions a good judge of character? The Stroop Effect and gender differences (or cultural or age differences) Exercise and brain health An evaluation of the Catharsis Theory (is venting your anger good, or does it just make you more angry?) I am writing my extended essay in the ITGS category. I took the ITGS class at my school, so I know the information regarding that topic. My first option is to do "Digital Divide within American public schools". This would focus on how some children have a disadvantage of technology because they go to a less fortunate school system, such as an innercity school. It would also focus on how this digital divide could affect a child's future. My second option is to write about how technology is affecting teenagers and their impersonal communication skills, meaning that since teenagers use so much technology, they are losing their ability to communicate effectively. It wou…

Or should i change the title a little bit? Maybe i could compare three compression techniques? Thanks in advance to all those that reply.

I'm doing my EE on iron warships in the American Civil War. I'm wondering if my research question, which explores the extent of the effect on the outcome of the war by the usage of these warships in the blockade and battles, is a bit too wide. Furthermore, how many primary sources should I have? Would 1 or 2 journal entries from say, Lincoln or a general, suffice? Finally, what would be the optimal essay structure in the body of the essay? Should I split it into two sections, battles and the blockade, and analyze points like morale booster in a subsection? Thank you for the help.

Hi, this is my first time on this website, so I hope that some slack will be cut. Anyway, I'm trying to get started on my EE draft which is due in a couple of weeks. I think I want to go into business and management (even though I haven't taken it); I want to apply analytical tools to justify or discredit General Motor's cancellation of the EV1 (in 1999) and introduction of the Volt (set for launch in 2011). The main issues I'm having are... 1. Finding an example of a Business and Management EE (to see if I can handle teaching myself the info I need) 2. Finding research sources Any help and/or advise would be appreciated very much. Thank you.

Hello, I am writing my EE on the book Through the Looking Glass (and what Alice found there) by Lewis Carroll. I need a little help formulating my research question. I have two ideas already: 1) the use of diction/language to develop Alice's character - I haven't found too much to write about on this one, but my mentor thinks that there should be a lot to say on this topic 2) the theme of identity loss/ appearance vs reality - I know that this is a very prominent themem in the book and there are many examples to draw from, but I haven't figured out what to argue in my thesis/ essay Which topic is better/ should I do? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I know that usually, people discuss two works in their English EE. Problem for me is that I'm probably going to be discussing poems. I think this significantly limits the number of words I could write if I was to just talk about two poems. So, I just wanted a second opinion on this. Should I just talk about something like two or three poems and end up scrambling for words to say towards the end OR should I discuss something like four or five poems instead? The poems I wish to discuss are all fairly short in length, approximately something in the range of 30 - 50 lines per poem (commentary length, haha).

I was wondering if someone could help me find a topic for my EE. What about the whole 'nature vs. nurture' debate? (Which affects human behavior the most, biology or environment?) It seems like that would be a fairly easy topic, but I'm wondering if it's too general. Or I was thinking of doing something about dreams maybe? Also, other people have said that sleep and stress are easy topics.

Hi everyone, I am currently researching the Israel - Palestine conflict for my EE and I am very excited about it, however my problem is that now, that it comes to narrowing down my topic, no ideas come to my mind. Hello, The field that i have chosen to write in are women during the Renaissance. I came across Joan Kelly's questiong "Did Women have a Renaissance?" and my thoughts sparked from there. My outline consists of a background (setting up the stage) of women and their lives at the time. I go into the role of women separting each one in their class. Where i begin to get hazy is how i am incorporating artists and their images of women. For example the famous Primavera of Botticelli. The bulk of the paper are 'images' of each type of woman (virgin mary, wife, mother, courtesan, aristocratic) Finally the exceptions (the women who succeeded. I am most nervous about the catergory m…

I'm sorry if this is a bit of an odd question. My main subject at IB is maths, it's what I plan on studying at university, but I've always been interested in the social aspect of it - particularly the role, or rather the lack, of women invovled in modern mathematics. I was considering this as a topic for my EE rather than a straightforward maths EE just for a bit of varitey within my diploma, but everyone seems to be confused as to which subject it would fall into or even if it's a feasible topic. I should think it would be some sort of social studies oogy? Has anyone here got any idea? Thanks in advance x

My ToK teacher and supervisor have already accepted my topic, but we are on the fence as to what specific category (the category I'll eventually have to put down in pen) it falls into. My EE will definitely compare the portrayal and treatment of emptiness, in quantum physics and Tibetan (Mahayana) Buddhism. I actually had a pretty title, (The Void: Examining Emptiness Through Buddhist And Quantum Eyes), but my supervisor only works in French. Sad day. Well, alright. I am now in the middle between IB1 and IB2, and hoping to get the majority of my EE done during this summer, but I'm kind of stuck. I have read through the book The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien, and come up with that I want to do an essay about good and evil in it, as Tolkien has created a norm of how a fantasy book should be written. However, I am constantly trying to find an original idea, that might be provocative but also analytical and not purely descriptive, but I have come to a standstill. Therefore, I hope that some of you might help me shed some light and fresh ideas on this topic. The current research questions I have looked at are the following…
