Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

I have no idea what subject i'm even going to use for my, but i do have it narrowed down to 4 basics options: ITGS SL, English SL, Math SL, Arabic HL. I have taken my two other subjects, chemistry HL and physics HL, because my chemistry teacher is incompetent and my physics teacher, although competent, yet extremely lazy. I can give an idea about the type of student i am so u can help me a bit more, however, i must let you know that I want a subject that will definitely, not maybe, give me a high grade. I like math the most and am very good at it plus my teacher is one of the best, im an average english student with a below par teacher (not too fond of the subject e…

I am doing my EE in Math history, my research question is: When was phi first used, and were those who used it aware they were using it? Or rather, like the language learning device, is phi something that is built into our aesthetic sense of “beauty”? My essay essentially traces the development of phi, and shows how/when it was used in early architecture and art in different societies (Babylonia, Egypt, Greece, etc.). I also talk a bit about how it is used today in art. I try to draw similarities between all the uses (i.e. phi was often used to build religious monuments or buildings). I basically conclude that phi was, and still is, used primarily unconsciously because…

Plants: The effects of cigarette smoke on Patuna plants. I already did this topic for a science fair in 8th grade. However, the idea is still not developed in the science community. My results showed a significant effect on Plant growth, characterized by withering of leaves and even decaying of roots. Very interesting. But the topic now seems more complex. The gas exchange, photosynthesis interruption and overall complexity are really difficult to summarize in 4k words. Andthe topic is constantly going back and forth betwen chemistry and biology, a dangerous gamble, that should be distinct not ambiguous. Cancer: Recently, the notion of cancer as an evolutionar…

Hi everyone, we just started getting ready for the EE today, and everyone has been scrambling to find supervisor teachers; i decided that i would settle for Biology since many teachers are already filled with students. i would actually like to write my EE in psychology however my school does not reccommend writing a psychology essay due to lack of any psychology courses. I figured, since Asperger's Syndrome is a neurobiological syndrome, it could relate to the subject of Biology? I was just wondering also, how would i go about writing a Biology extended essay on Asperger's syndrome because it's not really a lab that i could conduct, so is it possible to just cove…

I'm currently thinking of doing my extended essay in Music. IB Music SL is offered at my school, but I had to take Chem SL instead, and as there were only 1 or 2 applicants, the course didn't even run for my year. My coordinator seems to be partially okay with me doing my EE in Music, but I've never really formally taken it in an institution. As I play piano and live in Canada, I've had to undergo various theory examinations and deal with a lot of theoretical components, such as intermediate harmony and an overview of history and an in-depth look of everything up to the Romantic era. I'm attracted to the idea of music, but I don't want to sacrifice my chances of 3 beautif…

Hi, all! I've just submitted my extended essay. Most of the formulas and concepts have references to the sources (footnotes). Unfortunately I just reread and found out that one or two things that should have been referenced haven't. What could happen? What is the chance of being taken for plagiarism and what are the ultimate consequences? Will I be able to retake my second IB-year? Does anyone have second-hand experience on this? Thanks in advance for all answers!

My research question will be something along the lines of "To what extent has US foreign policy caused terrorism?" Does the question come across as biased? Is the topic too wide or narrow? Should I specify a timespan? I'm a bit lost for inspiration just now. Any suggestions as to how I might get things moving?

Topic: "The effect of temperature on the Bioluminence of the (Bioluminecent Fungi)" So might need a little more twikking, but that is the basic concept. Summary: Since Bioluminence is initiated by an enzyme, Lucrifase I believe, my thoughts are to develop an EE linking the effects of temperature on the growth, production and development of a Fungi I have yet to specify. not sure which one would be most feasible, since they are endemic to regions like Australia and Brazilian Rainforest. But my thought is since an enzyme initiates the reaction, I could make a connection or isolate the temperature at which the enzyme would denature and cause the fungi to stop…

I'm having tons of trouble coming up with a good extended essay topic in various subjects, so I'm turning to History =P I'd just like some input on this idea: The influence of pointed arches on [architecture/society/art] in Europe ^^might be a little broad, but depending on which of the three I choose, I'll narrow down "Europe" into something more specific, maybe? I'm thinking about what accompanied the idea of arches in that time, and developments from it.. Any input is awesome. Thanks =)

I am doing an experimental physics extended essay. Due to how specific my topic is (and how complicated it can get), I am having trouble finding book sources (that do not involve university level math). Is using only web sites as background information acceptable? Since it is experimental, all of the analysis will be done by me. If it were up to me, I wouldn't use any source at all, but I don't think that is permitted (if you want a good grade at least). Do I NEED to have books if I am shooting for a B or an A? Thanks BTW, I already conducted a search but the existing topics I found did not answer my questions (i.e [url="http://www.ibsurvival.com/fo…

Greetings. I am new around but I have been checking around the forum here and there. I am in IB1 and a week back we had a workshop regarding extended essays so I got my head into thinking of topics and subject areas in my spare time (we all know the stresses and workload dumped on us by IB ) Anyways, well as the title of this thread suggests, I need your help an opinions on choosing one of the topics suggested below. 1. The impact of Runescape, the most popular MMORPG in 2008, on teenagers. 2. What are the safety concerns of teenagers regarding the popular social networking site, Facebook. 3. The impact of music piracy on the music industry/economy. <--Broa…

So a bit of background - i'm doing Biology at higher, got an A* at GCSE and it's probably without doubt the only subject I'd consider doing my EE on. The one off-putting prospect is that I have to do an experiment to go with my EE. The reason why it's particularly annoying for me is that I really want to base it on Darwinian theory (evolution). I've ordered the Origin of species for a bit of background reading (considering I have until November to complete the essay) but I've been reading around the internet and I found Endosymbiotic theory seriously interesting. As much as it pains me to do it, here's a [u][url="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endosymbiotic_theory"]wikip…

I was planning on doing my extended essay on Ayn Rand possibly on either her longer work The Fountainhead, her short novel Anthem, or a combination of both. However, I am having trouble picking a topic that I would be able to write a whole Extended Essay on? Some of my ideas: - Ayn Rand's portrayal of the idea "survival of the fittest" or "individual versus the majority" - Relating her works to her life and how her works condemn the principles of communism - Unconventional love in The Fountainhead - more on how Dominique set out to destroy Roark in the Fountainhead, refusing to give in to emotion, etc. - Character's pitting themselves against the protagon…

Yah it's been a while since I had my topic / discipline but like most IB kids (that I know), I procrastinated and didn't do much. My initial topic was something in the lines of: The affect of Confucianism on the Western society blah blah.. Then talking to my supervisor he advised me to do something simple (or rather hard), 1 single aspect of Confucianism. Then I told him it maybe hard due to the limited material / resources, he ended up suggesting me to do an overview of Confucianism. So yah days / weeks passed while I crammed and paniced for other things. Because he is also the "big man" who is in charge of IB in general during this time (IB interviews for other gr…

Hej everyone, I've just completed my ee, (yay me! ) and I was wondering how did your predicted grades compare with your final grade? This question is obviously for past IB candidates but the opinions of fellow M09 candidates won't be not appreciated. My ee is in chemistry and my teacher predicted an A but he said that he will write a B on the forms as 'no-one gets an A in chemistry' He's worried that they will automatically look for faults, which I agree that will be the case but somehow I have a feeling that if I start with an A there are lesser chances that my grade will fall as much as if I have a B. I'm so confused as the teacher said it was my choice what he wo…

My main idea I'd like to roll with is arches. I can do a maths paper on the construction of arches - irrational numbers were considered god's number, therefore they were used in calculating. also the maths uses in creating the dome from the different types or physics- explaining the strengths of arches can only be done conceptually, it's the effect of gravity. also, the idea and how it works when the idea came about to build a double-bubble dome [two conjoined domes], from two domes that had to be free-standing in its parts as well as its whole. or history- following pointed dome through history and it's reason for introduction and usage in european architecure …

Hi, I have a problem with my English B Extended Essay. I have done a lot of research, but I dont know which topic I should choose. Hi Ladies and Gentlemen. Is there anyone around who can give just a little help on a history EE? I've done a full draft, so am only after minor things to fix. 1. I've referanced it in APA style. Do the citations count in the word count? (e.g. "It has been argued that coffee is useful for IB students (Pearson and Fox 1999)"- the bit in brackets!) If they don't, I'm in the word count, first go, so yay. 2. I've used one book quite a lot. It is full of quotes from survivors of the time, and I've quoted them in the essay. Do I cite that as the author of the book or the person who said it? Thanks

Well, what's done is done but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a certain format the essay should be written in? I know it has to be like a lab but i just don't know how to fit it all in. My main question is; can i put my apparatus list in the appendix or will it not count then and lead me to be penalised? Hi, umm i need some help with my ee. when i read the markscheme for History EE 2009 session, there is a section whose description is similar to "demonstrate appropriate language to the subject". Is there any history specific terminologies for IB History EE? Oh and is there a need to follow the MLA format of referencing (especially in the footnote), since i followed the footnote from an exemplar, (eg "Nasution, AH. Sekitar Perang Kemerdekaan Indonesia, p 34). Is this ok? or should i change it? thanks in advance

Hello everyone! I am in the process of doing an extended essay in physics. I built a trebuchet and through the use of some applied calculations tried to determine its range. I then experimented in real life and got results that don't match the calculations. I tried my best to explain it away by citing air resistance and friction within the system, but I feel that this only goes so far. Is it alright if I just say "I have no idea why this is happening"?

I've been having a hard time coming up with a good research question, having been shot down multiple times by various teachers. The current one I've been brainstorming is basically an evaluation of arches-- pointed, curved, and flat. (I got the idea from the book Pillars of the Earth). I was thinking that I could explain mathematically and analyze why Moslem-style arches are more efficient than curved ones. Going into some prelim research, however, I got a source that says the way to understand arches is conceptually, rather than mathematically, which I guess is also a good EE topic (.. keeping in mind that my current Physics teacher is barely qualified and does not unde…

Hi everyone, I'm kinda screwed on my word count for my History EE, but I heard some rumors about how to diminish the word count, I just want the IB Survival community to help me with those rumors. 1.- I heard that dates don't count i.e. Jaunary the 3rd of 1999 or 2007. Is this true? 2.- Are subtitles and titles counted on the word count? 3.- I'm using MLA citation, are the references counting? i.e. "The Great Depression occurred during the late 20's" (Thompson 24)....I'm talking about the "(Thompson 24)" part, is it counted on the word count? Thakns a loot, any coments will be helpful! =)
