Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

I am writing a Group 4 Extended Essay and am not quite sure as to what referencing style I am expected to use. I checked the IBO EE Guide but could not find anything there. Is it supposed to be a standard works citated page with MLA style citations? Do you need to have footnotes/endnotes/embedded citations?

Ignore this information. Two of my threads were merged. If you would like to comment on this topic, please do so via PM. The new topic of discussion is the Mercury topic discussed in post four. Hey guys; My idea for my EE right now consists of testing for polyethylene terephthalate (the material the bottles are made of) in bottled water. My thinking is that I will measure how much of that has leeched into the water the bottle contains, and draw conclusions based upon those results. Is this arguable? If I must change my topic, I would like to stick with water purity as my topic, as I have done a good deal of research into it. I have access to instrumentation that would all…

Howdy, Intro: So I am an IB2 student and recently had to completely change subject areas due to my supervisor being layed off from the school for something unrelated as well as research complications. After looking through the subject packets I came across the politics example: "The political debate over the death penalty in the USA". I participate in competitive debate so I realized that if I choose a question like that I could utilize a lot of research I had already done. Thus I promptly thought of my favorite and most researched debate topic of the Cuban Embargo. Topic Area: Politics Research Question: Should the United States maintain the current embargo of Cuba…

i am doing biology for my EE. I am investigating the effect of common fertilisers on seed germination. I have managed to complete my data in time but I don't think it is enough and comparing it to other EE it doesn't look enough. Do you guys have any advice you can give me? I am wondering what other areas I can continue research so as to make my data look better? Please help because it is urgent?

Hello all IBians, I am doing my EE in psycholgy. The area that interests me is aggression. I was brainstorming and came up with a bunch of questions. I need your help in narrowing down to one question. (Some questions may be repeats but in a different structure). 1) The importance, evaluation, identification and effects of environmental factor on aggressive behavior and what causes it. 2) What are the factors in the environment that cause aggressive behavior? 3) How do environmental factors effect aggression in different age groups and what are they? 4) What are some environmental factors that effect aggression in different age groups? 5) What are the effects of environme…

For my EE i was planning on experimenting with different fuels and comparing their efficiencies Mainly by comparing the maximum power each can produce and their respective costs to obtain a common unit for all. if i experimented on this and even included enviromental effects of the fuels would it be reasonable?

Well I talked with my advisor and she didn't have a problem with it, so what i ended up doing was over the summer I had 25 people run 3 different distances and used a formula to approximate their calories burned based on mph. All in all, experimentation is long done and over with and I have all my data. But now I'm really stuck on how to tackle this to assure a biology point of view. I was thinking of comparing how larger individuals burn more calories than already athletic people, and was going to propose a hypothesis of sorts or suggestion that larger people have this ability so they'd be able to get in shape with "less" amount of effort statistically speaking. I'm sti…

Ok, so I wrote a message on here some time ago, but now I got my ideas straighter... - If I can, I would like to write an EE in particle physics analysing particle collision images (it would then be a data-based essay), but then again physics EEs are usually badly graded? - On the other hand I would also like to write about "Multiculturalism and religious co-habitation in Andalusia post-711" I plan on studying physics in UK (I'm aiming for Oxbridge), so will it harm me I didn't write it in physics? On the other hand I need the points to apply, so...help! EDIT: does the second topic sound as if it might not fit into History?

So, I have changed my EE to theatre and have come up with a new RQ, but before I get into a similar situation that happened before, I would like some feedback. My new RQ is "An analysis of Bertolt Brecht's acting technique The Alientation Effect and how it is utilized in Galileo." Is this a sufficient RQ to wtite about? I was going to talk about what the technique is, how it can be used in Galileo, and if it is effective or not and if so, why or why not. I'm not sure about anything else to talk about, though.

Hey everyone, my EE title is "A comparison of the use of satire in Jonathon Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels and T.H White’s The Sword in the Stone". I'm currently doing a paragraph on the setting and how it contributes to the satire in both novels. I've identified that they both "Distort" the worlds and things they write about to make them unfamiliar to readers and mask their satire. E.g. Gulliver - different countries etc and in The Sword in the Stone - animal "realm". Do you guys think its a reasonable point? And how else does setting contribute to satiric messages etc Anything important I should mention that I've missed? Any help would be appreciated!

Okay, I decided to do my extended essay in chemistry, and I'm looking at the way a) weak acids affect enthalpy neutralisation in acid-base reactions and b) monoprotic, diprotic and triprotic strong acids affect enthalpy neutralisation in acid-base reactions. I used the different acids I needed (weak acids, diprotic, triprotic etc) and reacted them with a strong base, sodium hydroxide, in my experiments. First thing is, I can't really word my question properly. I've tried "In what way do monoprotic, diprotic and triprotic acids and weak acids affect enthalpy of neutralisation in acid-base reactions with sodium hydroxide?" but that sounds really awkward and isn't really cle…

I'm very interested with Studio Ghibli's works (e.g. Totoro, Nausicaa, Spirited Away, etc.) and I wanted to compare his films with similar animated movies at the time from the Western world (i.e. Disney/Pixar and Dreamworks). I talked to my EE supervisor/art teacher about this and she said it would be fine to write my art EE based on this topic as long as it focused primarily on the artistic aspects of the films such as animation techniques. I've been researching intermittently throughout the summer and I've found very little in terms of what I was looking for, but there's a lot of information on such things as character development, themes, plot analysis and so on. I can't decide on a topic even though I should get everything done in the nearest possible time. I missed my chance to talk with my supervisor, so I'm completely on my own on this one. Anyway, my proposal is "Is medicine an inferior good in Riga, Latvia?". Now, firstly, isn't it too broad? It is meant to be dealing with drugs sold in pharmacies only and not medical care. Maybe I could edit the topic somehow, so it would be more obvious? Secondly, what primary research could I conduct? Obviously, asking something to the customers of a pharmacy but I can't come up with any ideas. Could you maybe give me some directions? My secondary data would be drug prices and the amount …

We've just received our extended essays and we have to choose a subject and topic. There's a few subjects that i'm interested in, however the idea of doing a music EE really appeals to me at the moment. I'm a flute player and i'm really interested in flute music. I was thinking perhaps i could investigate something along the lines of different interpretations of Debussy's flute music. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or if there will be enough to write. any advice?

I'm doing an EE on a bee's ability to fly despite it being mathematically impossible. So I'm using bee dimensions with an airplane equation to first show how they calculated this. My question is, am I allowed to pull information from a data collection that scientists have already done to prove the possibility of bee flight? Because I know they used some sort of high-tech technology to slow-motion bee flight and find wing flaps per second. Or are there any other ways you can suggest for me to find, for example, the wingspan of a bee myself? I know this seems sort of like a silly question but I want to know what I can do to maximize EE points. Thank you!

I am in the drafting process of my paper and I've been using footnotes after using arguments that I've gotten from other sources. So far, I'm up to 1912 words with 36 footnotes and 425 words are from footnotes (I know footnotes are not included in the word count, it's just to give you an idea of how much it is). I know this question is stupid but it seems to me that I'm doing something wrong, considering that I remember seeing other examples with only like 20 of them throughout the paper. Can anybody shed some light on this please?

Hey! For my EE I am analyzing the use of cinematography in Wong Kar Wai's films, focusing on how cinematography is used to depict the reality of romantic relationships onscreen. I have finished analyzing all 9 of WKW's films. - In the Mood for Love - Happy Together - 2046 - Fallen Angels - My Blueberry Nights - Ashes of Time Redux - Chungking Express - Days of Being Wild - As Tears go by Naturally, I think it is ridiculous to try to cram a thorough analysis of 9 films into a 4000 word essay. Hence, I am wondering... how many films do you think it would be fitting to include? 3? 4? For those of you who did EE's on film, how many did you include? (I realize there's very few…

I've finally thought of something I'm interested in. And that is the artificial. Artificial everything. Mostly I've narrowed down to Baby formula milk and the use of Aspartame as an artificial sweetener. These are both topics which worry, and therefore interest, me. I am most interested in aspartame. Hi everyone - this is my first post here; please be kind. I'm currently writing my EE in History. My topic is Anti-Semitism in the Third Reich, and I've chosen to use a lot of primary sources in German. My question is whether I should note that I translated it, or whether I should just indicate the source as I normally would if it were an English source? Also, if I've found a translation online for something, I should obviously quote it properly, but should I also note the translator then, and possibly add a link to the source + accessdate? Thanks in advance.

I finally decided that my old topic was a load of crap and started to think of new ones and i have two in my mind right now. I can't find it on the syllabus but i'm worried it might somehow be included because google gives some reasonable results when searching for things related to the topics with "IB" at the end of the search. the first one is the effect of diameter of a guitar string on it's resonating frequency. Hi I'm doing a philosophy EE on Hannibal Lecter and whether his murders/killings can be justified using the theory of ethical egoism. In the subject guidelines for philosophy, under criterion F, there's an outline on how to analyse texts, but I'm not sure if it applies to only philosophical texts, or if it applies to any text used in the EE. Can someone please clarify? And if it applies to any text, and I use it to analyse the Hannibal novels, is the author's standpoint still relevant? Thanks in advance.

Title: 'How is feminism presented in the poetry of Maya Angelou?' I'm going to analyse four of her poems, after writing an introduction that will hopefully place my investigation into context - I'm going to begin by defining Feminism, then write about Feminism's place in literature, and then bring in Maya Angelou. I've been told that w're meant to present our EE's 'as a reasoned argument'. This confuses me a bit - what exactly will I be arguing? Is it that Feminism is presented at all? Or to what extent? Arguing implies that I'm trying to convey a point, so does this mean I need to PROVE the way/s in which Feminism is presented? Ah! That's probably it. I've read the mar…

All right, I've had my topic picked out for a while, but I'm absolutely stuck on what to do next. I would really love to write an EE on particle physics, somehow involving the Higgs boson particle or dark energy. I was thinking of maybe discussing the effect the discovery would have on the Standard Model, but my issue is that (as far as I now) I should preferably include an experiment, and I really have no idea as to how to do that (as my access to particle accelerators and the like is pretty much non-existent). Any suggestions for experiments? Thanks beforehand... Edit: I'm not actually looking for titles, rather ideas as to how I could possibly write an EE on the topic (in terms of research).
