Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

I'm doing my extended essay in biology on the topic: To investigate the effect the change in hydrogen ion concentration (pH) has on the locomotion of a paramecium. well, after writing 3500 words im stuck! Once i conducted the experiment, i found that the change in locomotion is drastically different when i use Hydrochloric acid and Sulphuric acid! I need to come up with a topic in 2 weeks and I just want some opinions on the results of my brainstorming My first idea is to do it in Swedish A1, on the novel "Kallocain" by Karin Boye (don't know if there is an translation of it, if not, I hope that some of the Swedes out here have read it). I thought I could write about how the protangonist's attitude towards his invention and his boss changes throughout the novel. The guy has invented a drug which forces you to tell the truth and finally he realizes that maybe it was such a splendid thing. I also thought that I could to a comparison with "Brave New World" about the societies, since both have a subculture th…

I am doing my EE in biology, and our EE teacher told us that this kind of EE's don't get good grades very often. We saw an example where a girl did an excellent lab practice and she got a C. I couldn´t see why. I am getting worried here, (not to mention how much I regret my decision), does this happen all around the world or is it just my school's bad luck??

Alright, the thing is, I've decided my topic to be something about neoliberalism and the Asian crisis 1997-1998. (more specifically, its effect on Korea) So I've done a lot of research on that, for about a month or so; then I sat down to actually write the essay, and I just thought "Hey, might as well as have a look at the criteria." and skimmed through it - ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT I'M NOT SUPPOSED TO CHOOSE ANY TOPIC MORE THAN 3 YEARS OLD!!! As I've written up there, the Asian crisis was about ten years ago so that goes right outta the window Might be a good thing still, because I thought mine might be getting a bit too descriptive. Anywayz, hav…

How can Prisma improve the motivation of its cashiers using Herzberg’s 2-factor motivation theory prisma is a supermarket about where i am and i have conducted a questionnaire to chekout cashiers of two representatives of this chain of supermarkets. Now i know from the chains previous research that when they investigated the employee motivation by using a happiness index, that these two stores were; one was in the top 10 while the other was in the bottom 5. The idea was to compare the results and then suggest ways to improve the motivation of the one which performed worse in the happiness index. hi, i'm new at this forum, but i have some questions regarding my EE. My EE is about Indonesian History (The Battle of Surabaya 1945 and its significance towards Indonesia's independence and the position of the Allied forces in Indonesia). My questions are: 1. I typed in reference for every sentence that I typed, is it ok or is it wrong? 2. My first body is composed on the brief history of Indonesia and the event of the Battle itself, is it ok if these topics are in my main body? Or should I skip the whole background history of Indonesia and the battle itself and start analyzing it since paragraph one of the body? Thanks in advance for your help.

I plan to do an extended essay on the elements of Nietzschean philosophy in The Sea Wolf by Jack London. I have already written the majority the essay and know exactly what I want to say. The only problem is that my advisor is telling to place emphasis on the liteary part while the IB coordinator is stressing finding experts who agree and disagree with me. Who is more correct? Should I make sure to have everything backed up by some historian or be able to put my own ideas within the essay? Comments, suggestions, criticisms are welcome

Currently I'm doing my EE. It's on the cause of British victory in the Battle of Britain 1940. However, I'm still wondering on the details of that essay. Is it fine if I just write it mainly as an analysis of the 3 groups of reasons (strategic, tactical, and technical), together with some personal evaluation. Or should some kind of creativity be added to make the research question more detailed and in-depth? One more problem. I found this link on the Internet: http://www.raf.mod.uk/bob1940/calendar.html. It is said to be the "official" website of RAF, but should I use it for my citation and references? And if …

General Issue: I am in the middle of working on my Russian Revolution EE, and I am having trouble finding primary sources to refer to in my paper. Ideally I'd love to find some Bolshevik propaganda, but any good primary source site would be great. So far the best site I have found is http://www.soviethistory.org/. Citation issue: One of the sources that I am using is The Russian Revolution (Essential Readings in History). Previously, I had been citing all quotes from this source as (Miller, p. #). I just realized that each section is written by a different historian. Am I safe citing each reference as I am, or should I ref…

So for my EE, I'm doing the portrayal of Solitude Through Magic realism in Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie and One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The thing is, I hardly talk about Midnight's Children... I mention very very specific events in the book and how it relates to One Hundred Years of Solitude as a whole. Both texts are very long (over 500 pages), I was wondering: 1) is this a good EE topic? 2) will the examiners criticize me for not focusing on the whole of Midnight's Children? Thanks in advance!

Hi! I'm new here, and I just had a couple of EE questions, but I'm just in the process of picking a topic. What do you all think of Harry Potter EE's? I would very much like to write one, mainly on the character of Voldemort (probably a comparison, though I haven't picked a villain -- I've thought of the White Witch, Dracula, Iago, and some others), and I just wanted to know your thoughts. I know that by several people it is not even considered literature, but I do consider a novel, and (especially later) an adult novel. Have any of you written HP EE's?

We were talking about our EE's in class today and someone mentioned that the EE guidelines say the title can't be in the form of a question, but I know a lot of people from my school have done so in the past (I don't know if they got counted off for it, though :/). I couldn't find anything about it in the guidelines, so I'm not sure what to do. Does anyone know?

Like I said, I have been thinking about doing the extended essay in biology. The issue I have is that I took regular (non-IB) Biology, and not IB. I realize that since there is an IB biology I will be allowed to do it, I just don't want to be at a disadvantage when doing it. Is there somethings that you know that the IB curriculum covers and the Halton (a region in Canada) doesn't? For those who have no idea what I am talking about vis-a-vis halton I mean that is there more to IB biology than the non-IB biology that your respective schools offer? I thank you in advance. If it turns out that I will be at a serious disadvantage, I am thinking of doing a Geography EE, I have…

Hey guys. I have officially chosen Biology as my field of research for my Extended Essay. Initially I was planning to do the effect of UV light on yeast growth (ie. mayb during fermentation). But mentor said that is there any past research done? any info? I tried but not much. He said to pick a topic that would allow me to easily manipulate 1 variable and measure 1 variable. So after sitting down with mentor for 1/2 hour, I've got this so far: I have decided to use brewer's yeast for this. To activate the yeast, I have to put the yeast (in dormant stage) and put it in a solution of water and sugar. The yeast ferments the sugar and turns it into alcohol. So I have deci…

Just last week we were told we have to have a supervisor and an EE topic ready in two weeks time, I really want to do it in Maths but I've been told it's super hard and being a perfectionist I don't want to send in a mediocre maths EE when I can write a great one in English, without making it so difficult on myself. I will also be covering the inside of this chamber with different material such as different types of foam, and carpeting.
