Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

I'm in Year 1 of the DP program and our research question is due to the EE coordinator soon. I'm doing a history EE on the Rwandan genocide crisis, but I could not come up with a question that sounds...for lack of better words, good enough. Help? My attempts: Why did the world choose to ignore the Rwandan genocide crisis? For what reasons did the world choose to ignore the Rwandan genocide crisis? Thanks in advance.

Does the IBO want anything soecific? I could not find the answer to my question in the EE Quide, does any of you know? Thanks.

Hi, I was planning to do my EE in history about architecture but my teacher said that an EE in history can't be based on architecture as such, said that it's more of a topic in art's history subject or smth. However, he said that it was okay if architecture was engaged in some kind of a significant historic event or smth. So i'm looking for your help guys.. does anyone have any experience with an EE about architecture or could anyone suggest how to structure the essay so that it would be suitable for a history EE? Any kind of help is much appreciated

I am about to start my Extended Essay. I want to write about WWII. I was thinking about exploring the causes of WWII and the reasons for fighting. My question was going to be like "was WWII a war of ethics(ones that each respective country wanted to stress throughout the world), prestige(image, reputation, power, influence), or of ideological reasons(religion, nationalism, race, politics)?" I was planning on trying to identify the war as one of those three, and exploring each side to prove my point. What do you think? Do you think this could be made better? or do you see any problems that could arise if I were to take this on? Please let me know, the final draft is due in…

Does age affect the concentration of amylase in saliva? So does this seem like an ok EE topic? I'm going to test the amylase concentration myself by seeing how fast the saliva can break down starch. And then I could relate this to metabolism and things like that, but can this actually work? and what if my results come and age doesn't affect amylase concentration?

My EE is on English, and therefore is filled with opinions and observations. I have two references, one from a philosophy website and another from a literary article. I'm not sure as to whether to put in more references. Something I think I should note is that I am analyzing the importance of empathy in the character change of a character. It's not something like feminism where I can just research on the historical context. Thanks for all your help!

Hello everyone. So I am basically done with my extended essay in maths(on the rubik's cube) and I am finalizing it right now. One thing I've noticed is that I'm on around 4200 words right now(excluding what is suppose to be excluded). Now I remember reading in the Maths EE guide that words are rarely an issue in maths, but I think they meant that you would have a perfectly fine essay with 2000 words. I'm working to cut down my word count, but going below 4000 would be challenging. I'm hoping someone who knows about this can give some input.

I desperately want to write an EE on a topic related to psychology (the Myers-Briggs Scale specifically), however there are no psychology teachers at my specific school, and I am not taking psychology. Would I be breaking any rules if I wrote a psychology EE, and if so, can you cite the source your using to answer my question (if possible)?

I've decided on my Music EE topic as "In what ways do the musical aspects of Arnold Schoenberg's "A Survivor From Warsaw" portray the imagery of a Nazi concentration camp?" However, perusing through the criteria and guidelines again, I came upon something that worried me: it stated that I should talk more about the music-related stuff and not induce as much talk about the literary-related stuff. Obviously, my topic gives me clear guidance as to how I can discuss musical features, but there, I've decided to compare it to something that is more literary or historical based. I'm just paranoid that I'll get penalized for this, since it obviously seems to stray away from the m…

Hello, I am doing my extended essay on Physics, and I have done a draft. My supervisor encouraged me to add subheadings under every heading( e.g. for introduction I could put specific subheading/s under such as "the structure of the gun"; or if my heading is"results", I could add subheadings such as "data collection" and "data analysis" in my essay to clarify things.) I took my supervisor's advice and did so; however some science teachers told me that I should avoid subheadings in order to make the essay flow better(They told me that if I do subheadings it will make the essay look like a lab report. But the thing is,it's a science essay, it's hard to make it not look like…

Hey guys, I'm doing my EE on Maths. While I was brainstorming ideas for a topic, I found out that someone got B for his EE on "Maths and RSA Cryptology." I did some thorough research and it seems like "The Mathematics of the RSA Cryptology" will get me into the D pile although it sounds like an easy "A". It was full of theorems that I don't have any clue. All the theorems are based on modular arithmetic and picking two prime numbers to generate a "public key". Can "This Mathematics Essay is going to underly the mathematics of the RSA Cryptology" be considered as a research question? I'm also thinking about "Aztec and Mayan Math" which appears to be more interesting than R…

My draft was due a few weeks ago but I somehow managed to worm my way out of having to turn it in. My mentor really seems as though she couldn't care less about my essay, which at first I thought was great. Now I realize that this could result in a total disaster. I have a few questions I need answered that she usually tends to ignore/not effectively answer for me. Firstly, my EE question is something along the lines of: "To what extent does packaging design influence the consumer's choice?" You're probably thinking "gee, that's really broad." But it's been approved for a while now. Again, this might just be due to my mentor's apathy. Anything I can do to improve this RQ …

Hello.. This is a preliminary title (not question, title) for my Economics EE. A Comparison of the Viability of Two Different Indexes Measuring Economic Development. Of course, the question will be narrow enough to focus on two indexes and probably one country. Please give me feedback. Should the question be narrower? Is this topic approachable, what do you think is the best way to do so? Any ideas on primary sources? Do you think a Macro topic would get a good score? any help please. Thanks a lot.

I've been thinking about what to do for my EE lately and am really keen on doing it under visual arts. So far I've searched a couple of local artists but there really aren't many resources to use other than interviews and an occasional magazine article. I don't know if that's fine or enough. I took this workshop during the summer for Batik art and have access to many of the young artists I met there. After researching I found out that this style of art was introduced to America very recently by a man who currently resides in Toronto (local). It seems perfect for me to do my EE on him. So here's the RQ: 'How has David Kibuuka influenced and introduced Modern Batik art pain…

I was thinking along the lines of comparing 'Voldemort and Macbeth as tragic heroes'. I was wondering if it was a legit topic? Voldemort fits all the characteristics of a tragic hero, but is it a strench to go on and label him that? I really want my EE to be on Macbeth or P&P. All I have for P&P is comparing the roles of social classes with Wuthering Heights... not very original. I also thought about doing one with A Walk to Remember, but can't think of anything to discuss besides love Thank yous[;.

Hello, This is my first time ever posting in this forum so please excuse me if I am doing anything wrong... But anyways, I am writing an English-based Extended Essay exploring the theme of Death within the Holy Sonnets of metaphysical poet John Donne. My issue right now is that I am only choosing a few out of the total nineteen sonnets, because after reading through and annotating all of them, some of them skip past the topic of Death completely and will be irrelevant. I only want to talk about, for example, six of the nineteen. These six sonnets share some of the same ideas and concepts of Death, and some of them don't. When I write this EE, is it better if I just talk a…

At my school, we have both IB and non-IB classes, and the two are usually actually mixed together as well. We also have a very limited number of choices for IB courses. Anyway, I was wondering if we need to be taking a class on the subject which we want to use for our EE. For example, my friend wants to do her EE on religion, but we have no religion classes in our school and no religion teachers to be her advisor. Is it possible to write a paper on religion, philosophy, etc. if we don't even have these courses available at our school?

If I were to write an English EE, would I only quote the works I'm examining? It seems from reading the 2009 EE guidelines that they also want you to quote prior criticisms of the works. Do I have to do this? Do you think it would be better to do this? Just wondering. Thanks.

So I'm trying to come up with a topic for my English EE. I'd like to write about Shakespeare and I have a few ideas, but I really don't know if they're any good for an EE. Here are my ideas. If you could critique them or comment on them for me, I'd really appreciate it. - Dreams/Visions in Shakespeare's plays - "Fool" or "Trickster" Characters in Shakespeare's plays - Sleep in Skaespeare's plays - The influence of Greek mythology on Shakespeare's plays (or maybe just on one of his plays if that's too broad) What do you think? Are these English EE material? Thanks in advance.

I want to discuss about how the main reason women were persecuted was because of religious beliefs and to support that statement, I'll take examples such as: In Christianity, women were blamed for spreading heresy since Eve was the one who convinced Adam to eat the apple. Islam I can also support it further by discussing matriarchal societies and their religious beliefs. My last type of support would be the changes that have been brought about with the spread of religion. Examples: Christianity spread to the Americas Those were the only examples I could name at the type of my head. So basically, I want to know is Is my topic too broad? Hey guys, My EE Research Question is: "Is America still the child of Europe". I am planning on analyzing to what extent this is true. All of us know that America was founded by Europeans. Now I want to examine to what extent in America some European roots are still visible. I plan on writing my EE on the morality of carbon credits. My question is: Is this subject too broad? And: Does this qualify more as a bossiness and management EE or a philosophy EE? Is the exploration of ethics a discouraged subject? If so why? How would I go around providing proof or making the case that carbon credits are unethical/ unmoral, or moral/ ethical?
