Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

I'm really worried about doing an Extended Essay on Peace and Conflict Studies because I'm not taking the course and don't really know any theories of conflict. I made a brief outline for a topic, which got approved, however now I'm having a hard time finding primary sources for the essay. The Outline is attached below. My second idea is about Thailand's week democracy, the recent political instability, and the danger of a long cycling conflict between the red and yellow shirts. This topic would be good as I could find primary sources, is local, has two distinct sides. But how would I treat the conflict?[i'm worried it'll become a History essay] And what could possible s…

Ok, I looked it up in search *metaphysics* and I found only four topics, none related, and when I searched purpose of life... apparently too many are trying to find a life here on this forum But I want to take a special topic for my EE, the method of discovering one's life purpose... and well, how should I approach that? Like, originally my topic was to compare the differences between the religious and aesthetic view of what metaphysics is, and I probably will do that for this too... Question is, how do I argue? Do I argue which one is right or wrong, or which one is better? Or do I argue which one is more relevant? And is there any other POV i can compare the two betwee…

My school has deadlines for us to turn in our EEs through them at the end of our 1st year as an IBDC. I finished my essay relatively early and had my mentor (the school appoints us mentors so that the students aren't completely lost as to how to go about writing their essays) read, proofread it, and edit it when necessary. My EE compares Dracula and Frankenstein and the prompt deals with why Shelley and Stoker use imagery to portray the idea of "evil" in the novels. When I finished my EE, I got worried that I wans't "answering" the prompt. My mentor says that I did answer the prompt and that it was one of the better essays she had read. I'm worried because my essay concen…

I'm a bit stuck on my research question; after having done some research I'm concerned there's just not enough out there to write it. My research question is to see how the Tiananmen Square Protests of 1989 either helped or hindered the Chinese Democracy Movement / political reform in China. (Background Information: Students in Beijing and other Chinese cities protests in the 100,000s in 1989 calling for democracy and an end to corruption, nepotism, and censorship. The protests were suppressed and Zhao Ziyang, General Secretary of the Communist Party (who had been sympathetic towards the movement) was purged. Afterwards, the government obviously did not democratize and po…

Hello everyone So, my EE is making slow progress, but it is really hard to make up my mind about the research question. Now it is: How has TV advertising influenced the ideal of beauty of US American women? It is meant from the first time it was done about 50 years ago. My supervisor adviced me to write that in the abstract and not include in the question. I just went over the criteria again. So, do you think it is focused enough? I would like to have something special in there, not so usual, and I just cannot find it in there, even though it is a topic which really interests me. Thank your for reading and hopefully you are able to comment on the question

Hello I wrote my History IA on the role of China's economic crisis on the downfall of the KMT during the Chinese Civil War. I know that I can't do the same topic (obviously) for the IA and EE. However, how different do they have to be? I talked to my history teacher and he said that there would be no problem if I did something like American intervention in the Chinese Civil War (Marshall, Stilwell, etc.) for my EE. I just want to double check if this is okay, as I would be pretty screwed if the IB thought otherwise. So do your IA and EE have to be on completely different topics or is it acceptable to choose the same war (Chinese Civil War) as long as two different facets …

Hi. I am in the process of coming up with a topic for my Extended Essay. I want to write about hip hop, and more specifically how the media tries to link it with drug use among teenagers. For such an essay, I think I would use statistics on how the drug use among teenagers has increased/decreased over the last years. I would also use statistics that show whether the references to drugs in hiphop lyrics has increased over the last years. In addition, I could use statistics that show whether hiphop listeners are more prone to drug use than listeners of other music genres. Of course, I would also use articles from American newspapers in which it is said that hiphop encourage…

alright so ive done all the experiments that i wanted to do for my topic. but now im just concerned if its too simple (is that something they consider?) well anyway, my case is that i investigated the effect of temperature on how high a ball bounces at a few different temperatures which gave me some nice results. but i wanted to make it a bit more specific and my teacher suggested to investigate the efficiency of bounces (measure how high it bounces the first and second time and see how much lower it bounces each time). thats a nice idea but where is it going tho? does that mean anything if the efficiency is lower? thanks a lot!

OK, so i picked microeconomics for my research topic. My original topic was ICE CREAM CONSUMPTION DUE TO SEASONAL CHANGES. the plan was to do a survey and find out age groups. ice cream includes the ones in convenient stores and the creameries like coldstone. i was also hoping that i could pull up records from stores so i have concrete data. but not sure if that is possible. i liked that topic. my econ teacher sucks and she didnt give me much response. another econ teacher said it was too obvious and i would only be finding details on common sense, so its stupid. it does make sense but i still like the ice cream topic so i dont know what question to ask to make this topic…

Hey, I've started working on my extended essay in Economics recently, and am just looking for some input, suggested literature etc. So what I'm doing is investigating the price elasticity (of demand) of coffee at two different kiosks in my town with comparable quality. One location has in practice a monopoly on coffee in that area, and is right next to the train station, so it gets plenty of working professionals who need a cup of coffee before they go to work. The other is in the town centre, with plenty of other kiosks and cafes around also selling coffee, and.. Well, no one stops by there on their way to work, it's mostly window shoppers, and.. Well, people who are out…

Hello everyone I am doing an essay on Ethanol/Gas mixtures. The idea is to burn mixtures with varying amounts of ethanol and gasoline, find a line of regression with this data and find out what is the most effective mixture of gas and ethanol for the money. Is this a doable topic? Is it narrow enough? Too narrow? If I am able to do this, I want to do some theoretical calculations concerning the energy yield, and thus I need to some how find out the chemicals that makeup gasoline. I do understand that gas is made of maybe a hundred different hydrocarbons, but I figure that if I can find data on maybe 90% of the composition that will be sufficient. I have looked at MSDS sh…

Hi there all. Im completely new and just wanted some peoples help. I haven't had any deadlines yet but i need to have my title soon, and im still not sure if i have any good ideas! I wanted to do mine about animal cognition, possibly with the title 'To what extent can human intelligence be found in humans?' However im now pretty sure that this is far too broad, but i dont know how to make this more concise. Should i do one for one 'kind' of intelligence e.g. use of tools, or one case study e.g. Alex the parrot (he apperently had the biggest vocabulary and was extremely 'smart') Also, what subject would you consider this? I am quite strong at biology and would like to do …

So where do I start. Uhm what do you term this kind of sentence two sentences with different tone but brings the same meaning? For example "Shut Up" and "Please keep quiet" I can't seem to get the correct term yikes! I'm thinking of comparing the usage of the two ^^ between gender. Which gender tend to use the harsher version and sort. Is that acceptable? or my other choice is to compare people's preferrance between two different tones of writing style of comic strips. basically it's just as the previous but this one I've to conduct a survey- provide them with two comic strips of diff tones and which one they prefer. and the last one is a bit boring to my liking but i'll…

I have to have my EE subject and idea for my essay in three weeks and I think I have an idea but I just waht someone else's opinions who won't just say it's great because they are my friends. Ok so here is my Idea, I want to do something about the origins of nursery rhymes and their influences on societ, or somehing like that. I got my idea from the origins of mary mary quite contrary and Ring around the rosie. So what do you think do you think I would be able to do it, and any ideas on how I can research and maybe narrowing down my topic a bit more, any ideas? I'm still going to talk to my history teacher and get his opinion so I can be sure.

Hey everyone, We were just told to start thinking about our EEs, and I'm really torn between doing it on economics and English. I really am interested in both subjects, but as of right now, I'm slightly leaning towards economics. However, I have heard that economics EEs rarely get good grades, that they're marked really harshly. I looked everywhere and couldn't find a perfect economics EE online, and it really scares me. I've also been told that it is easier to get a higher mark for English EEs, and I have seen perfect scoring English EEs floating around. Could anyone tell me if they have witnessed/heard about patterns of this sort? Do you think it's "safer" to do it on E…

For those unfamiliar with the game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_the_gathering Ludicrous nerdiness aside, the game of M:TG seems to be ripe for some sort of game theory take on it. What I can think of off the top of my head: - Analysis of metagame, or the composition of decks [essentially strategies] in a tournament. the choice of which deck to pilot is a game in itself (maybe the infamous Combo Winter as a study of equilibrium? not limited to M:TG either, metagaming exists in Starcraft, even, owing to the different build orders) - The ideal play given a certain board position (effect of incomplete information?, optimal payoff?) - Mulligan or keep problem (also c…

Okay, I'm doing my extended essay in English A1. My previous topic was something or other about Jane Austen's novels, but seeing as that topic was made up on the spot and I haven't read a single one of Jane Austen's novels, I've decided to pick a new one. Does the extended essay have to be on a classic, like Jane Austen or Shakespeare or something, because I'm not the least bit interested in writing a 4000 word research paper on novels and plays I don't even know, let alone like. Okay, I know Shakespeare, but nothing past borderline school stuff. Can I write my essay on a more modern novel? And if the answer to the above question is yes, then is it acceptable to write the…

Hey. I just got my teacher's comments about my history IA back today, and he gave me a 23/25 and some very interesting comments. I realized that I'd like to make my EE an expansion of my IA. My topic/question for the IA was "To What Extent Did Anti-Semitism Play a Role In America's Apathy Toward The Holocaust As It Occurred?" Do you think it's acceptable to take the same idea, perhaps not the same exact question, and flesh it out? I basically want to look at the books "Interview with the Vampire" and "Dracula" and see how the vampire myth has modernized through literature. But I have 3-4 aspects that my english teacher thinks would be best to narrow it down to one. what would be easier, and what would you find more info on? - Religous symbols - how the myth has changed due to science/modernisation - (I don't know how to shorten this aspect, but basically its how the human nature has changed, and how fear has changed and how human reactions are different ect.) - the role of women in vampire literature - sexual imagry / love (also would I be allowed to say that in my essay?
