Extended Essay
Talk about the Extended Essay.
Extended Essay Rules - BE SURE TO READ THESE before starting a thread!
1. Just to make it clear - we will not give you a topic for your EE, but we will help you refine and expand on your original ideas for a topic. You are marked on your choice of topic so we can't help you with that.
2. Before doing anything, read the Extended Essay for Dummies thread. At the very least, we recommend you take a look at the 5 Cardinal Rules of the EE!
3. Before asking anything about format or requirements for the extended essay, we suggest you read the IB Extended Essay Guide first (which you can download from here).
4. Make your thread titles descriptive. At the minimum, mention the subject area and if you have one, the topic! For instance "History EE on Nazi Propaganda" is better than "EE help please". The people who know about history and nazi propaganda will click on the first thread and probably miss the second one. Help us to help you - give it an accurate title!

Hello, I'm a new member on this site, and I don't even know if making a new topic is the right way to go, but I need help on my chemistry extended essay. I have a rough draft due first day of school (in exactly a week) but I don't know how to write one. My topic is about acid dyes and basically the affects of different pHs on color fastness, and i have done an experiment, but when i write, how do i count up the 4000 words and even write a paper full of charts and informations rather than text? Since I'm not a VIP, which would be marvelous if i could see a sample paper, I'm really stressing out here help, anyone?

Just a quick question. For my bio EE, I have 2 focuses originally, but as you progress more you find more solutions to the problems and want to investigate into those ones, so then does that count as off topic? How much would you spend your data on the first problem and the later ones, what if I went over the word limit?

Hi everyone, I'm about to start my second year of the IB and I still haven't managed to think of a subject for my EE. Now everyone says, do something that interests you etc and the one thing that really interests me is skateboarding. It is something that I enjoy more than anything. Now this might sound really stupid, but do you think it would be able to base an EE on skateboarding? =/ I have had so much trouble thinking of a topic. I was thinking of fuel cells in cars, but this would be more interesting. It would probably be with physics, perhaps how to make the concave and angles etc to give the optimum leverage? I dont know, I'm really stuck Any advice would be h…

So I'm doing my EE on the difference between fantasy and science fiction, using Lord of the Rings, and Fahrenheit 451 as my examples, and then re-classifying Destiny Feared and His Dark Materials using the themes derived from them. My supervisor approved it and everything (and she's in charge of EEs in general, so she should know what she's talking about), but suddenly two days before my second rough draft is due, I'm not so sure that it actually falls under the Language A1 category. A more detailed explanation of my essay - My thesis is that fantasy/sf should not be classified by setting, nor should they be lumped together, but instead they should be classified by …

Hi!! Im writing my extended essay on chemistry and it's about the extraction of pigments in plants with solutions at different pHs. However, i did the experimental part without using a spectrophotometer (a device for measuring light intensity), just using what i saw. Do u think that will be bad for my grade??

Hi! I have to start my IB biology extended essay this year, and I was thinking to do the effect of different sound frequencies on the some aspect of fish. I'm not too sure which aspect I will investigate but i might do something like the breathing rate of fish. I'm just worried that this experiment will be impractical and won't work at all. I've done research on this and I can't find anything useful... Do you guys think that I should change the topic or do you know anything about this that could help? Thanks!

Hey I've got a couple of questions basically, I've got all this information and I'm trying to make sense out of it, so here goes, I'm working on my EE which a draft is due next week. (I know, I'm big on procrastination, but I'll manage.) So Basically, I've got a few sources, very few sources. And when I went to go meet with my adviser, they told me that I was going in the wrong direction with my topic, I'm doing something about how and why Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were different like through their philosophies and actions for civil rights . Basically when you think Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X you think American History. But my adviser told me …

I am this far and without a topic because my initial subject was history, over the summer I decided I would change to English. I also decided I will write my essay on Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I have a few ideas too, but I can't seem to get anything concrete, I have been at this for a month now and it is driving me insane. PLEASE, someone help me figure out my topic so I can sit down in two days and write my essay in 48 hours non stop. I was thinking of doing something on civility/propriety in the n…

A while ago, we were asked to choose our topics for our EEs. Since I was in such a hurry, I thought of something, but I sort of regret choosing it now. I wanted to do something along the lines of: "How does fertilizer concentration affect the growth of radish seedlings?" I do Biology HL. I was thinking about measuring the growth according to Leaf Area Index, but wouldn't measuring height be simpler? Also, I think I'm going to have to look for a specific fertilizer...like something nitrogen based. I'm sorry to say that I don't really know. I'm worried that it is too simple of a topic. What can I do to make it a little...tougher?

Hi all, I've decided to do a mathematics paper for the EE, but my advisor is relatively new to this and I'm having trouble coming accross a good topic that can be thoroughly analyzed. First I thought about simulating the parabolic paths of the hurricanes but soon realized that it'd be hard to obtain the data, as well as to write 4000 words on a simulation.. so then I looked into calculus and I was recently thinking about this topic: "Leibniz's notation and how its behavior as a quotient affects calculations in calculus" and I was thinking I would use implicit differentiation and some other calculations in the essay itself. But I realized that there are so many notat…

Okay, so i have a topic and a thesis, and as part of my investigation, I performed an experiment. I was curious as to how much of the essay I should allot to the experiment, and how much of the experiment I should allot to background information. From what I can tell, I can't find a way to get more than 3 or so sources. But I can't really find more on how intraspecific competition affects lime bean growth rate >>.... Can I get a little help?

Hi, I am doing my EE in math, and I was wondering if it would be ok to have my "research question" be a modified question from, say, a USAMO, or from one of the more difficult AIME problems. Most of the example topics I've seen seem to be, more or less, discussing a topic and proving a theorum or solving a problem related to the topic. Would it be a bad idea to instead choose (or make up) a difficult problem-solving-type problem? Does a math EE necessarily need to have a real-world application? Thanks

[make a difference when in oxidant activity when vitamins are taken] and if possible anting on free radicals.

OK, so I signed up to do an extended essay in philosophy, and I have narrowed my topic down to something in the field of utilitarianism, and probably J.S. Mill. However, I don't know what a good question for him would be. I read the treatment guidelines, but I don't know what kinds of things I would say for "an analysis of John Stuart Mill's theory of rule utilitarianism in his work Utilitarianism"? What would my research question be? I am regretting choosing philosophy. I know nothing about it.

My query is whether my advisor (for the essay) has to be the teacher of the subject I am choosing to write under. What I have come to understand from the official IB website is that the subject (not the topic) I choose towrite under has to be an IB subject anywhere in the world, and not necessarily taught in the school in which I am enrolled. Sorry if this all sounds too complicated, but I think you guys are best suited to answer this question.

HI i am doing my EE in phyics and in particular about sound. I am using soundforge 9.0 to analyse my data. Basically i record a sound and then analyse this using a fourier analyser, which then shows me dB against frequency.
