Hey, I've got orals next week and we have to study 6 pieces: 3 poems from Ariel Plath (Cut, Nick and the Candlestick, Balloons) and 3 essays from George Orwell (Reflections on Gandhi, Anti Semitism in Britain and The Spike) Do you have any suggestions on how I could review and what I should focus on? Thanks,

Hey! I did my IOC last year and I received a Level 6! My teacher was really good as she provided us with an outline to follow for the commentary and guiding questions for the discussion. I have included the outline that she gave us. If you follow it, I am sure you will ace the commentary portion of the IOC. In regards to the discussion, as our teacher provided us with guiding questions, I was able to just practice and practice answering them. Remember 'quality over quantity' is key. Answering fewer questions but having a bomb answer will not only make the 10 minutes go by so much faster, but will also up your grade. If you have any questions or need h…

Hey guys! I've been doing practice papers during the week and this is the feedback I received from my teacher on select paragraphs: The inevitability of conflict was forged the very second the human race was granted free will. The clash of opinions, oftentimes tangled with respective egos, has been the cause of death, destruction and disaster but it has also been the birth of literary masterpieces and artful fiction so full of spark and grandeur that it’d be a crime to regard it lesser than reality itself. Without conflict, there is no motivation for change, exploration and resolution. Authors Yann Martel and Richard Bach have recognized this very fact in their…

So in English A HL, criterion A in the IOP focuses on knowledge and understanding of the novel. How do I show this in my presentation? I am doing character analysis through the main character's relationships and interactions with other people (indirect characterization). So would I show understanding by using quotes to support all of my points, analyzing the phrases and explaining their significance, and then concluding it by how this new knowledge adds to the reader's understanding of the novel? This is what I think I should do. . . To those who have done their IOP, can you guys please help me? I want to get really good marks on this

I'm doing my IOP on Things Fall Apart and my topic is the indirect characterization of Okonkwo through his relationship with Nwoye, Obierika, Ezinma and Unoka. I will have three characteristics of Okonkwo and support my arguments with evidence from Okonkwo's interactions with the other characters. I want to make my IOP more creative so I will be using a mind map to illustrate Okonkwo's relationships. However, if I do not want to use a powerpoint, how can I add quotes into my presentation? Is there any other way to approach an analytical IOP so it engages the audience?

So I've got an FOA that is to be done soon, and my question is How does media affect the image and play of upcoming, young football players? What I want to do is look at two different articles and show how the article influences other people's perspective. I was then going to expand and go on to other different types of media. But what else should I do for my FOA? I need some help

I recently did my IOC and I failed terribly. I'm not even expecting higher than a 9/30 and I am traumatized for life. I am not a literature student but I am hoping to at least boost my total IB score, however this is already a downer for me and I don't think I'm gonna get even a 5 in Language A. Is there any way that I can save myself or counter this disastrous result from getting me lower than a 5 in Language A?

Hey, I'm doing English Lang/Lit (former a2, I guess) and from the formal point of view, the course is for native speakers. As I'm not one of them (meaning native speakers), I've spotted that sometimes i do have some 'gaps' in vocabulary. Could you recommend me a tv series or a book which uses very sophisticated language + idioms (Californication doesn't make it ) to use both in life and school? Thanks a lot! :))

A lot of people get scared by the prospect of doing a commentary on something they have never seen before, but really, paper 1 isn't hard at all, and a 7 is relatively easy to get. What is required of you: You'll be judged on five criteria, each with five markband descriptors. The highest mark you can get is 25. The criteria and the requirements to achieve five marks in each are listed below. Criterion A : Understanding of the Text 5 : Excellent understanding of the text # perceptive understanding of the thought and feeling expressed in the text as well as some of the subtleties of the text # detailed and persuasive references to the text. Criterion B: Interpreta…

Hey, So, this whole forum posting thing is extremely new to me but l thought it would be worth it if l'm going to get any useful advice out of this. My IOP for English A (HL) is coming up soon and l have come up with my topic/question, as well as a brief start to my thesis and my two main points. However, the area l am struggling most in is writing the actual thing and what approach to take. I've started writing about my first point as l didn't know how to start the introduction. After briefly explaining my first point, l have no idea what to do from there. I know that the IOP is mostly about detailed analysis and appreciation of the writers choices and all tha…

Hi guys, I'm writing this because of questionable things happening in my Language A literature class. As you might know, Language A HL and SL has separate criteria. For example, maximum descriptor of SL criteria in paper 1 and 2 is 'very good' while HL's maximum is 'excellent'. My class has HL and SL students altogether, and when we had assessment, my teacher give all of us grade accordingly to HL criteria. I'm in SL, and every time when I take paper 1 or 2, I always get 3 to 4 points deducted from my actual SL score. For example, if my paper is actually a score of 19, my teacher gave me 15. Do your literature teachers also same as like this? Or, do you think there'…

Hi guys! I know this is quite a bit later than when this was posted... If anyone could possibly help me construct an essay question for "A Doll's House" (Henrik Ibsen), that would be really appreciated! My ideas are so far based on the relationship between Nora and Torvald in contrast to Krogstad and Christene and how the latter end up "winning" in the play and how Nora and Torvald's marriage comes to an end. However I don't really know what an essay question could be for this topic area! I'm not even sure if it is a good topic to write about...(I only have 1500 words!)I just really don't want to write about gender roles because seems like everyone does that for this pla…

We studied 4 authors for English HL Literature, Genres. What will be the most efficient method to prepare for the paper 2? Learn more poems and quotes from two authors I like or try to learn all 4 authors? I feel like learning two authors for the exam with more poems may be a logical method. Please share your experience and success as exam is just one month away (Nov / 2016).

I'm doing self taught lang A and I've just gotten the questions for the Individual Oral Commentary. At the same time, my teacher has assured me that for my Presentation, which will be recorded at the same time, it will be enough if I only talk about one work. However, the syllabus says that the presentation should be about at least two of the three works studied in part 4 under the self taught heading. It also says that the mark scheme is the same as for SL taught students. But, the SL mark scheme says that the presentation should be about one work or multiple works and it seems to imply that the default presentation should be about only one work... So, is it one work or …

Hey all, It's been over a year since I've been here. Unfortunately I didn't get the IB scholarship in the end so I didn't think I'd ever have to post here again. I've always wanted to study English at a top English university (Oxford/Cambridge, UCL, Durham or Exeter) - this is why I applied for that scholarship in the first place! I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but I already have a high school diploma from my former school (I graduated in 2014, but I couldn't take English literature because this subject doesn't exist in the Hungarian system. After an unsuccessful attempt to do an A-level programme at a college in England…

Hey everyone, I'm doing a Written Assignment on The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle. After doing the Interactive Oral Presentations and writing my Reflective Statement, I went on and found a topic. The only problem is, after doing some independent research, I realised that the Interactive Orals barely scratched the surface of the aspect of Japanese society my topic concerns. To be more specific, it concerns the role of WWII on Japanese society and how they've come to terms with their role in it. I've read a couple of theses and the reading guide by Jay Rubin, the translator of the copy of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle that I am referring to. Although I've looked at other analyti…

Hello! I know that that the hardest part of this theoretically is the topic choosing. The texts we've read are Anna Karenina by Leo Toldtoy, The Man Who Lived Underground by Richard Wright, and Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. I really want to use the Man Who Lived Underground as the book for my topic but I don't know what to choose as my actual topic. I had the idea of doing something on the symbolism of red or even the use of imagery within the story Are there any ways for me to get ideas? Would the two ideas I had been remotely acceptable? Thank you!

Hey Guys! We are starting our IOP and I am struggling to come up with a topic for it. Our texts are Katherine Mansfield short stories, The Quiet American by Graham Greene and We Will Not Cease by Archibald Baxter. I considered a topic talking about the contrasting portrayal of women like Phuong in TQA with one of Mansfields characters and how society has progressed in its treatment of women and their role in society but its a little bit typical I think and I was almost wanting to something more out there and different. I would love any improvements on my topic or any ideas! The topic is due this weekend! Thanks x

IOP nerves

Hello! I've got my IOP tomorrow and I'm fairly confident in the preparation that I've done and that everything is there, but I'm worried about losing my nerve tomorrow when I actually stand up and speak. So, I'd like to ask, how do I dispell such nerves, because in the knowledge that I've prepared well and that its fairly relaxed - I'm still nervous. I think a bit of nerves is fine, because it means you care, but I'm worried that it means that I'll begin to drop marks due to stammering and swaying in my nervous energy. Anyone experienced this sort of thing / know how to stop it?

Hello I was wondering if the BIG five structure for paper 1 is adequate. 1-Audience / purpose 2-Content / theme 3-Tone / mood 4-Stylistic devices 5-Structure This structure makes a 7 paragraph essay (with the intro and conclusion), which may look good or bad. Personally, I followed the following structure for my Paper 1 mock exam and I got a 7, but I have the feeling it was overrated : 1.Intro 2.Text one analysis 3.Text two analysis 4.Comparison (Contrasts and Similitude between both texts) 5.Conclusion. This structure makes it easier to not repeat multiple times "The tone of text 1... The tone of t…

Hello everyone, I'd just like to ask if anybody knows how important it is to use quotes in paper 2? How does this impact the way in which IB examiners mark the paper? And do they make a massive difference? I'm thinking they would fall under Criteria A: Knowledge and Understanding... but Criteria A talks about demonstrating an understanding how context effects the meaning of the works you have studied. So what does this exactly mean? My English teacher told us during our mocks that we can paraphrase quotes if we cannot remember them. But is their use actually essential to gaining knowledge and understanding marks?

Hi all, Last year, I'd been getting fairly good grades on my essays, and this year, well, it's suddenly dropped which has been quite disappointing (though not a surprise considering how unresponsive my brain is being towards analysis in essays). There isn't really one big issue, but a lot of big ones, which is more than a little troubling, specifically: writing a coherent and concise introduction determining the subject/theme of the passage the actual analysis and knowing if it is enough/makes logical sense I'm aware the middle is only done through practice, and whilst I've looked at plenty of examples of essays, none appear to be the type tha…
