Literally, we've heated up the book argument almost to cursing words and my teachers still don't get their crap together even among themselves, and then I come up and say that the guide states that part 3 books are the only ones allowed for the paper, then my coordinator says that it's any book at all that is either in the PLA or the PLT, and finally my English teacher argues that it's any book at all. The wisest option would be to take the smallest subset of this universe, which is part 3 books. The problem is that one of those books is neither in the PLA nor in the PLT, and the other I haven't read and I loathe with my soul (Jane Eyre), plus I didn't even read it. S…

Hey everyone! I'm doing my first Supervised Writing on Oedipus Rex in a few days, and I'm pretty bad at these kinds of things (in-class essays, literary analysis without preparation, etc.). I'm not planning to write my Written Assignment on the play, but I want to do well since I want to get practice, as well as a good grade (to raise my overall grade haha). Does anybody have any tips on how to do well in these kinds of situations? Any and all help is appreciated Thank you very much!! xx

Hi everybody, as we all know exams are coming up and I wanted to create a post where we could share suggestions on language A paper 1 and possibly paper 2. My language A teachers, unfortunately, have not been very helpful in telling the class how to structure these essay and I have a few questions. 1) What do you guys think of the linear approach? The structure I use in a paper 1 essay is analysing every single line and writing down something both for content and form (I also write an introduction with a hint to the main message and the conclusion with the main message fully explained). The comments I got was that I introduce some ideas but I do not full…

Hello, so my written assignment is going to be about Antigone. My current topic is "The role the loneliness of the character(s) in Antigone." So my question is what is better to for my essay?Do I 1- Focus on a single character such as Antigone/Creon and go through her/his loneliness throughout the play? or 2- Write about Antigone, Creon and Ismene and talk about their loneliness and how it affects specific actions they do? Any and all advice would be helpful. Sorry for the inconvenience and Thanks for the Help!

Hello everybody, yesterday I got my notification for the Individual Oral Presentation. I have until the 6th of May to prepare and I am aiming to deliver a speech on this topic: "A critical examination of how Orwell uses dualities to shape political commentary." Within my IOP, I am aiming to talk about "Shooting an Elephant" and "A Hanging", which have strong themes relating to this topic. I'm confident in the analysis aspect, as I have done similar topics in practice speeches and have scored well in that criteria. I'm fairly confident in my basic oral skills, but what I'm worried about is the breadth of the topic. I am unsure whether the topic is too specifi…

Hello, I'm thinking to write my english A lit. WA on Szymborska's poems, but the problem is I have only 2 poems suiting my topic. Do you think it is enough to write 1200-1500 words on it? If it helps, my topic (not yet discussed with the teacher) is: ''The concept of innocence and evil in 'Hatred' and 'The Hitler's first photograph' by Szymborska'. Do you think it sounds ok btw? Thanks for any feedback!

Hi. I am a selftaught student of Chinese A literature. I have a question about paper 1. For paper 1, the literature analysis, am I supposed to write an essay on each of the two question? Or just one essay to ask two questions? It would be best if someone has a sample answer (better in Chinese, English is also fine) with examiners' comments. Thanks.

Hello guys, I have encountered a problem with my self taught book list. I have read through the IB self taught document, and it mentioned that the authors should be chosen from different genres, which I have done correctly. When I first chose the authors from the PLA list, they belong to different genres (short story and novel). However, when I started to prepare for the part 2 oral commentary, I found that these two works I have chosen from one of each author were all prose fiction. And this means that both of the works have the same five part 2 oral questions. Is this possible? It would be really strange that the IB does not realise this problem. …

Hey all, I have my IOP coming up soon (in a month's time) and I've decided to do an analysis on Kite Runner, my topic being: Amir's journey to redemption in Kite Runner After I had a look at some other few 'stock' topics like an exploration of father-son relationships or an analysis on the theme of betrayal, I just don't think they don't appeal to me as much as the theme of redemption does. The problem is, I'm not sure what to talk about, and even if I do have several points, whether the points will have substantial supporting evidence from the book without being spread across the entire text. For example, I started analysing and writing up a speech to…

Hey guys I am currently in the process of writing my WIT, however after a few conferences with different teachers and past students everyone said that my thesis was not very clear. I managed to change it slightly and now my thesis looks at how stage directions reveal the marital discord within A Doll's House (not my complete thesis, but I don't want to put the full one in case some else uses it, plagiarism etc. -- i know, i'm really paranoid about that kinda stuff..) However, one of the students said to break down the idea of marital discord and examine it. I.e. he did something about juxtaposition of freedom and belonging in the Novel 'We', and he said examined …

Hi, For my English written task, I wrote a review on a play. I pretended to be a writer from a newspaper during the release of the play (1500) and hence wrote it in older English. Now, another friend in another class (he is HL, I am SL) also wrote a review in older English but on a completely different play. We have not collaborated at all (we were just inspired by each others ideas) and our texts are completely different. This does not count as malpractice or anything, right? For example, we have certain students in our math class that are doing an IA on the same topic (which is allowed according to IBO) and some students in our economics class have IA's on sam…

Guys can you please help me out in my Written Assignment. I feel that I have a good topic in terms of content but the research question does not explicitly refer to any of the following key words: symbols, motifs, themes and role. Is it still safe to proceed with such a topic. I checked a few sample essays that scored a high grade and all of them used at least one of the above words in their essay research question. Since I am focusing on a character, I might not be able to include these key words into my RQ, but I will be able to explicitly refer to them in my essay. Also, is writing an essay about a character accepted or does it have to focus on symbolism and …

I started the IB before the change that came first examinations 2013. And in my new school, the teacher is too insecure to give any worthy advice on HOW to write the essay, because she has kept receiving low graded essays and invoices from the IB about the low performance because her teaching focus is extremely technical. Sometimes I feel like I need to write a legal contract rather that a paper on artistic appreciation, in order to get good notes with her. However, my main question is if it's ok to give my essay a creative tittle, like "between the midnight sun and the polar nights", for an essay on "Sult" from Knut Hamsun. Or do I need to explicitly state what I am …

I'm having my mock exams in a week, and I do not have a particularly good relationship with the English A1 Lang & Lit paper 1's. I've always had gotten like 11-13 out of 20 on my past exams, which may have been attributed to my weak analytical skills of texts. Although I'd like to think I've improved loads since then, I'm still having a lot of confusion with the idea of context. I perfectly understand how the historical and cultural context of the society the text was written in and how it influenced the text, however going deeper as context becomes more and more vague it just seems so complex. It appears to get intertwined with other literary aspects such as purpos…

So, I'm doing my IOP on Thursday, and I've been working on my presentation(No slideshow). Anyway, I'm done my essay now and I've realized that I have no clue as to how I was supposed to compare it. The topic I chose was the theme of memory and how it affected the characters. Does anyone have any tips as to how I would write a comparative essay that's suitable for my presentation? The actual presentation should be no issue since I don't get nervous in front of people, in fact I get more excited, but its the writing of the essay that's bugging me.

Hello people! So for my IOP in Language A literature I was thinking about doing a comparison of a character from a book we read and compare that character to how he (in this case it is a he) is similar/different in the movie. There is a lot to compare and contrast between the book and the movie and I was just wondering if someone can give me some feedback on the idea. Thanks folks! P.S. If anyone wonders what book/movie I'm talking about it is "Låt den rätte komma in" by John Arvide Lindqvist. I think the English version is called "Let me in".

Hello guys, I'm currently writing a literary commentary on Heaney's "Storm on the Island". I want to link Ireland's violent past (Heaney was Irish) to one of the ideas in the poem. However, I am unsure whether the link can actually be drawn or not, so can I say "Heaney might have used this statement in connection to his nation's violent past", or use any other words that imply uncertainty? Are there any other alternatives, or should I drop the idea completely?

Hi, For written task 1, I am planning to write a blog which discusses the problems with gender stereotypes in modern advertisements. Hello all, I'd like some feedback on my HL English Lit IOP idea which is coming up soon. If you like it, please throw out some comments/sub-ideas to help spitball/brainstorm talking points for me. I want to discuss how the book Frankenstein affected all books in the horror genre if not started it in the first place. Secondarily, I want to tie this into modern ideas like halloween and films and how these are all still reminiscient of frankenstein, especially looking through the lens of film noir as a stepping stone. Noir definitely has themes of the dark side of humanity and questioning the good side of man. Practically all modern films stem from this idea in some way or…

Hello everyone! So, let's just start off by saying that I am an extreme science person. Science is reallyy "my thing", and as we all know, in the IB diploma, you have to take a language A as well. Criterion A (Knowledge and Understanding) is consistently a 4/5 whilst B-D are consistently 3/5. Do you have any ideas or advice that could help me in pushing up this mark?Am I right in thinking that I would be better served in focusing on pushing B-D up a point each? I generally write for all of the allotted time and write paragraphs centred around things that have appeared in the work in chronological order. Thank you.

And we had to pick the topic on our own. So, I asked my teacher about English WL/WA topic... And he said that we had to do the reflective statement first, then the WA/WL and we are not the ones to choose the topic. Instead, my teacher will pick a topic for it and everyone will have the same topic. Is this true guys? Shouldn't you guys be the ones to choose the topic? Please help.
