How to properly use new theories and methods in a Math HL IA?

Hello everybody

In my math IA I am using methods and theories outside of the the syllabus. For example, I am using polynomial curve fitting by least squares method (statistics) and also the arc length formula of curves (calculus) in particular sections of my IA. I have researched these two topics extensively and I know how to use them; but, I am wondering how one should present new methods/theories in the IA?

Should I, for example, give a proof for the arc length formula and perhaps even a generalized deduction of the curve fitting method in my IA? These proofs might be quite long and would most likely make my IA go above 12 pages.
