Hi to all! I have to submit my HL Math IA tomorrow (Hopefully I will get another chance to update the file), and I have two topics. One is Modelling climate change and the other is Fibonacci series. Idk which one to go ahead with and how to do the IA Please help! I prefer to go ahead with Fibonacci series since it is the easier of the two. I really really need help as to what to include in the IA. Also what format should I use I know this is super last minute, but procrastination got the worst of me

Hey guys, I'm getting a bit confused with the question. For part d, I used 24*30 = 720 to get the new expected value and the answer I got for d is 0.765. But e.i askes for E(Y), isn't it just 720?

Hi guys, For the past couple of months I have been reading many students responses on Math Hl unit tests. Apparently, people say they are "shocking" and completely out of syllabus or whats taught in class. I this really true, please can someone give an insight as of what to expect on unit tests for math hl. A response will be highly appreciated

How could Math HL be preferable to Physics HL? I'm really just considering one of the two. At the moment for Physics HL I'm barely on a 6, and I have to read the textbook several times to grasp the concepts. (We finished Waves and Oscillations recently.)

I'm done with my math hl ia but it involves a lot of 3d geometry and stuff. I think I want to write it by hand I have a very neat handwriting and I can also draw the shapes. Can I do that or would it effect my grade negatively?

Hi! So I'm doing my internal assessment of finding an optimal route through some points of hte city using the Chinese Postman Theorem. My math teacher says its okay, in fact, he suggested the idea of doing this IA. But I have half of my work now and I think that the math that involves are very easy, so I'm scared that I don't get a good mark because of that. I'm doing the option of calculus, and this is part of the discrete mathemtics, so it's part of the HL syllabus, but do you have any suggestion of how can I do my IA a bit harder? Or do you think it will be enough? Thank you!

Is it just us, or do you guys also have Math HL and SL combined classes. The teacher complained about this, but due to everyone's subject choices, making HL and SL classes separate was impossible and it worries me because the teacher goes at a much slower pace during SL lessons and this makes me worried we wont finish the Math HL syllabus in time :/

I was thinking about doing my EE in HL maths and found some interesting topics like Rubik's cube permutations, golden ratio and beauty, what 'e' is, what 'π' is, and so on. One of my hobbies is coding (I also do HL computer science and know python), and on one website, someone said that you could involve coding in your EE. How exactly is this done? Has anyone done this before? Thanks, help is always appreciated!

hi so, i am almost done with my maths IA, but i am unable to figure out how to get the pitch of a sound by using fourier series. I have an odd and even function, but i dont not know how to get the pitch of the sound. i know that i cannot use the simple 1/time-period, because of the discontinuities in the function. so what do i use? please help me.

hello everyone I have always wanted to utilize integration in my IA, but I am having so much trouble just looking for a real-life situation that I can use to model a function or anything. I am DESPERATE to have an IA topic by the end of next week, guys i have an idea of finding the area of a sail on a sailboat but im not sure how will i get to do that plus i feel its too basic for a Math HL IA. if you guys could help me further with this topic at all that would be great help (I'm not sure if this is really allowed on this forum, so if I am breaking an rules, please just delete this post!)

Hey guys, just wondering if the Casio FX-9750GII is suitable enough for Math HL. Our school recommends us to buy the Casio FX-9860GII, but I found the FX-9750GII to be cheaper and it has almost all the functions as the FX-9860GII. Any help would be highly appreciated.

I've always been interested in math and want to go into a science-based field. I'm a sophomore and debating whether when I go into IB1 next year to do IB Math HL; I'm doing well in Pre-Cal Honors this year and know for a fact that my HL math teacher will be good because I had them for Algebra II last year. However, I'm also juggling a lot of commitments that I also want to be able to put effort into (as well as ISR- my school has "academies" and allows students to do both the IBDP and ISR academies if they so choose -- both are difficult). I'm a straight-A student but have heard horror stories about HL so I'm getting nervous thinking about doing that and all of the other …

Hi, Could anyone please explain how to solve this type of question: In a ski resort, the probability of more than 3 accidents in any day at the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) is 0.24. Assuming a Poisson model, 1) Calculate the mean number of accidents per day at the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) I got to the point that P(x>3) =0.24 and P(x<3 or x=3) = 0.76. How do I continue from here? I also know that the answer is 2.49. 2) Calculate the probabilit that, in the four weekends in February, there will be more than 5 accidents during at least two of the weekends. I am completely lost as to how to approach this question. …

Hello everyone, I am planning to do my math IA on predictive modelling. I will look at the date from the 100m race in the Olympics from 1896-2004. I will use the logistics curve to determine a function to establish predictive modelling for the Olympics Men's 100m race. I will use my findings to predict the results of 2008, 2012 and 2016, as well as speculating on the 2020 results. Please do suggest any changes I can make or if this topic isn't good enough. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, I am going up to IB2 this year and have been working on my IA this summer. I have already decided what my IA is going to be about and the other day, I decided to ask my friend living in another different country, who has graduated this summer, what her IA was about and she did almost exactly the same thing. The topic was the same and the things that I was going to do was also really similar to what she has done already, like graphing and statistical testing. If I continue working on my IA with the same topic and not change what I am going to do, does this mean that I am breaking the academic honesty rules...??

Hi, I am still choosing my IA topic.... I really need advice. https://ibmathsresources.com/2015/04/20/modeling-volcanoes-when-will-they-erupt/ https://ibmathsresources.com/2013/05/03/amanda-knox-and-bad-maths-in-courts/ These are two options. (It is better if you can recommend me one) Aren't they too simple for HL? Also, are these common topics that have been investigated by a lot of students? If they are, can you please recommend me a topic.... I heard that statistics is easy. What is other relatively easy area for IA? Algebra, physics & math, etc... HELP!

I had two ideas in mind for my Math HL IA 1) I was thinking about doing it on non Euclidian geometry. I couldn't find a specific topic but I was thinking about proving that the Earth is round using spherical geometry but I am not exactly sure how to do it. 2) I was thinking about the Mandelbrot set. Maybe showing how it was bound by 2, but that would be repeating something that has already been discovered and proved many times before. If you have any suggestions on how I might find a specific topic it would really be helpful.

PLEASE HELP. For my Mathematics HL IA I was planning on calculating the Earth's perimeter, radius and then calculate the Earth's curvature using no technology. To calculate the perimeter I need to measure the shadow length of an object in two different locations at the same time. In or Der to not deal with having to do measurements on a second location, I decided to pick the date as 21 of December and the location somewhere on the tropic of Capricorn so I know that the shadow length is zero and I only have to take into account the shadow length of my stick. (I live in the North hemisphere) By using the function arctangent I would find the angle between the two locati…

Guyss, end of September I have to submit my draft for my Maths IA. I have already decided to do an investigation on Monty Hall Problem but have not come up with a specific research question on the topic yet. As I have not done the chapter of Statistics and Probability, all I could do is to search online ways to approach this topic. Many mentioned about Conditional Probability and Bayes so I nearly have the gist of what to do. Can someone help me with the specific research question and suggest me the outline of what I could do in my IA?? Thanks alottt

Hi, two days later, I need to confirm my math IA topic. I thought of measuring the accuracy of weather forecast. So I would be collecting data and use Bayes theorem (the probability to rain given it was forecasted, etc) as a means of checking the accuracy. Since my teacher said merely this might be basic, I thought of using Poisson distribution as well. I think I can use it in a way to see for how many days it offers the right forecast. But I was wondering if it sounds fine. Or do you recommend any other ways to improve this idea?

Hello everyone! For my math HL IA, im planning to do a topic related to Basketball. Recently, there was a trade between the teams, Cavaliers and Boston Celtics. By comparing the traded player's stats such as points per game or Field goal%, I will be investigating if this trade is a significant trade in the perspective of Cavaliers. For this topic, i'm planning on using standard deviation and statistics. Do you think this is enough for my math IA? or should I incorporate other math to it

Ok so at the end of last term we learned that our teacher was leaving for HL maths, so we rushed our calculus option in 2 weeks and went through all the theory. Over the holidays I was honestly more concerned with completing my other subjects, IAs, and my EE, as well as my HL maths core. But now, when coming back to school, with no teacher, we have just been doing questions, but I am struggling heavily with our calc option. After looking at the discrete maths it looks SO much easier. Is it worth switching now if i can? It would mean teaching myself the whole option, but I mean I don't understand calc at all at the moment. Or should I stick with calculus? If you…

Hi Everyone, I am researching for a math hl ia topic and I found the topic: "deriving the surface area and the volume of a torus" pretty interesting. I feel that the use of mathematics is sufficient but I think it will be too text-book like. For personal engagement could I add things like optimising surface area of a gold on a ring (or rubber on a lifebuoy tube) or can I derive surface area and try to determine how it affects the efficiency of a life-buoy tube.

Hello, I'm new here I have a question about my IGCSE math results and IB math HL. I got a B on my IGCSEs and I'd like to do math HL this year. The thing is: are there any requirements for IB math? If I got a lower grade than my school would require, can they kick me out of HL math? I should also mention that I was predicted a higher grade for my IGCSEs and HL math teacher was also my IGCSE teacher, could this help somehow? If it is necessary, I'd be able retake my exams.

Hi everyone, I have a math question on conditional probability that I am completely stuck on. Would you mind explaining the step by step process (and why I should do each step) to me? The question is as follows: Bag A contains 6 blue counters and 4 green counters. Bag B contains 9 blue counters and 5 green counters. A counter is drawn at random from bag A and two counters are drawn at random from bag B. Tbe counters are not replaced. Given that there are two blue counters and one green counter, what is the probability that the green counter was drawn from bag B? Calc. option question: Q: f(x) = ex - 3x = 0, prove that there are exactly two positive real numbers x. _____ My working: Since, f(x) is continuous and differentiable, I thought about how I could apply Rolle's theorem f'(x) = ex - 3 = 0 => x = ln 3 Here, f(ln 3) = 3 - 3ln 3 < 0 I reasoned: Since, there is only one stationary point (x = ln 3) and this occurs when f(x) < 0, therefore there must be exactly two roots. But how do we show that they are both positive? Thanks all!

I currently have a really weak grasp of maths HL and to be frank i am very uninterested. I plan on taking Econs/Business as my degree in the USA preferably and I dont know whether I should drop Maths HL and take Business HL instead. My maths is currently at a 3/4 level. I think my predicted grade for maths is gonna be bad and im very worried about applying into unis now :/ thank you in advance.

Queue Theory? Continuity Equation? Please help me out if you guys know what this issue is linked to what so ever theories and equations that I can research on or if there are any tips. Thank you.
