Yes guys, I'm new. I don't know what the maths folio entails. Someone please help me out here? I'm actually anticipating Maths SL, which means I'm going to do the exam one year early. I assume that also means that I have to do the folio by the end of year 11.

Hi! I've been looking for a new graphing calculator to get and I really like TI-nspire. However, there are two versions – CAS (computer algebra system) and [no-CAS]. I know that CAS is not allowed on IB exams (Math SL and Physics HL that I will take) while [no-CAS] is. [no-CAS] also comes with a TI-84 keyboard and has TI-84 emulator in it. CAS has a lot of more functionalities like solving equations and derivatives, is allowed on AP exams (I probably will take AP Statistics my senior year), and will be helpful in my future math classes, like Calc 2. Some people may prefer TI-89 but I'm definitely not going to buy it. So which one – TI-nspire [no-CAS] or TI-CAS? I really n…

During the 5 minutes when you read over the entire paper, what would be the best method to use my time? I was not aware of this until i took the exam, so I just read through each question and went over in my brain quickly how i would do them. Would it be best during this time to make notes on the questions or something?

Is this considered cheating?

As far as I know, the teacher who is going to mark your math portfolio is not allowed to help you...well... ...when I finished my math porfolio...my teacher read my porfolio (without marking it) and told me that everything was correct...but that I should explain it in a simpler way...then she gave my porfolio back so I could write a simplier explanation...is that considered cheating? Is her telling me to write it in a simpler way considered cheating? I did all the work by myself...but is it still considered cheating that she told me to write it in a simpler way...after all...telling someone to improve their explanation is considered "help" right? So...in short...is it ok …

I really need to be able to screen shot my calculator for a math portfolio but I lost the CD and I don't know where to download a software for a virtual calculator to screenshot the graphs. Could anyone help me with this please? (edit: I wrote TI Smartview software because thats what the teachers computers use but I can't attain it)

Hello guys! I'm struggling with my EE in Math(on origami) and I definitely need a software to make all the geometry accurate and not just "illustrations" to the text. Do you happen to know any good software?(freeware/for charge)I'd really appreciate your recommendations.

hi I am doing my portfolio. Can you name some math softwares that are free. Is it necessary to use a software when they say use technology? Or is it fine just the calculator and ms-word for typing. Ideally how long does it take to do a portfolio. Thanks

I've noticed that around the forums all people are concentrated on are the specifics of the IA's and how to do them and what is expected off of them, but I can't help but wonder how come no one ever gets stuck on math problems. For example, I remember back in 9th grade when i was taking Pre-IB Pre-calculus that there were some things that were just really hard to understand. And since IB isn't the most open curriculum out there, I went on to take AP math classes (which are INRCREDIBLY better than any IB math class) Right now i'm in 11th and i'm taking Calculus IV (differential equations here in Florida), so if you guys have any questions about calculus that maybe you dont…

I dont know about anyone else, but are the maths textbooks you use way harder than what you get tested on? Our school gives us one by a guy called Fabio and its so much harder than any IB past paper ive done. I suppose thats good but what are other books like?

I have heard from people that IB Math exams are getting easier and easier than before. The syllabus includes less things than before, exam questions are easier, etc. I have also noticed that more recent exam questions are easier. From textbooks, the questions from past papers of the early 1990s are so difficult! Is this true or is what I've heard a bunch of crap?

We are supposed to reset the RAM or ROM of our calculators before the exams. Now I am not sure about this, but isn't this gonna delete all applications? And that's the next question, because which applications are we allowed to have on our calculator? I only have Finance and PolySmlt, I think especially PolySmlt is useful and I don't want to lose it... So how is this supposed to work?

hey. my math teacher says that when you give a final answer it should be to 3 significant figures. im just wondering if that still applies to normal distribution table values that are given to four significant figures. he said yes (they should only be given as 3 sig figs), but i'm not sure because the values are given accurately to four in the tables...does anyone know what the right answer to this is? or what do your teachers say? thanks.

I just have a quick question about writing the Math IA (in calculus if that matters). What tense should the paper be written in? Past tense, as in explaining what I did? present, to explain what I am doing? or does it not matter as long as I explain what is happening. Thank you

I realized while doing my math homework and plotting points, that I have no idea how to do a curve of best fit. The way it's looking, I suppose a sinusoidal function or a polynomial function will fit best. I have no idea how to achieve either of these though. Guidance, please?

Hi, so basically this is my second math portfolio that I'm doing, but I didn't do so well on the first one. Could people who scored in the 18-20 range give me some suggestions? Like what types of things do we need to include in the math portfolio? A title page, introduction, etc. or do you just start answering the questions? And if I'm using a graphing program such as Excel, do I need to explain how I got the graph? And... lol these are a lot of questions, but how long do your math portfolios end up being? Thanks in advance!

So there are 2 people in the Maths HL class, and 5 in the Maths SL class. Only 7 doing the IB dip while one doing certs. Don't you prefer smaller classes? Makes it so much better, however, the other girl in my class has been absent for a few weeks, so the class gets ever so boring.

Hi fellow mathematicians such as myself Considering this is my first post I thought I would try and help those who needed it and help myself prepare for exams. I am still in my Math 20 course but would still like to challenge the questions you bring forth, and will not give false answers without warning if I am unsure. I am currently in Calgary taking IB courses in LBP. So I hope you give me a chance and I will try to help solve your problems =). Leave your question and any information associated with it if in need of help. THX!

Hi. I'm having problems with this simultaneous equation. I would really appreciate your help. 2x + 3y = 17 7x - 5y = 19 2x + 3y = 17 3y = -2x + 17 y = (-2x + 17)/3 Hence, 7x - 5(-2x + 17)/3 = 19 7x + (10x - 85)/3 = 19 And this is where I get stuck.

Do you find that your teacher's pace is much too fast but that the whole class seems to follow apart from yourself? This site is full of lessons from teachers that go through many concepts in a very clear way. Although it's not an IB site, you can find pretty much all of the main topics covered. However, there's a small fee of $5 to pay for your subscription, but it seems totally worth it! www.yourteacher.com

Well, I don't know if you guys know about it, but in the "states" there are math competitions associated with MAO, mu alpha theta, math club. These are pretty much competitions held at regional levels which involve about 200 kids per cattegory (algebra1, geometry, algebra2, pre-calculus, calculus and stats) and it's simply a test of 30 questions with 1 hour to do. Then the top 20 get trophies and the top 5 schools get trophies. For those of you guys out there who like math, maybe you wanna give it a try There's a test attached for the calculus division, about 8 years ago. It's a pretty easy test compared to now, but to see how you stand, each quesiton is 4 points, each …
