Hi everyone, quick question. What are some key passages from Importance of Being Earnest that are 40 lines or longer? By 'key' I mean, major/extended metaphors, turning points in the plot, offering insight or key theme, soliloquies or discussions either one is fine. Any help is much appreciated..

Hi, For my IOP I'm writing a poem representative of an internal monologue for a character in my novel but idk how to structure the rationale. Should I be writing about how my writing choices made the poem interesting to hear or how they communicated something about the novel or both? Is it supposed to have a thesis or something? Also, how should it be structured like has anyone's school given them a document to assist with this that they could share with me? My draft is due in like a week so any help is very much appreciated! Thanks

Though I am a native of Romania, I've lived in the US for most of my life and have never formally studied the language (though I am fluent), which I would like to do via a self-study. However, I've read on some websites that if you're doing a self-study of a language in group 1--even if it is your native language--you can only take it as an SL course. Obviously, I'd much rather do an HL, since in this case I find doing an SL sort of pointless. Seeing as I can't find any official IB article or whatever explaining this, I though I'd ask you guys: Is this true--that you can only take the SL examination if you're doing a self-study--and if so, is there any way to bypass this …

Hi all! First year IB teacher here. I am worried about my first year in the DP. It has been overwhelming, making me worry about many little things. My question is - Would the teacher get in trouble if a student's written task came back as plagiarized? My students wrote these tasks with another teacher, so I was not with them during the writing process, but I was the one to submit them.

I read a thread where someone compared HL English to being like GCSE/iGCSE Literature, is this true? In terms of analyzing a book, writing essays, etc. I'm currently reading "The Handmaid's Tale" and I'm really stressed out about annotating it, too. I finished my iGCSEs in May/June with an "A" for English Literature but I'm still extremely stressed out.

Hey everyone! I created an account here just to ask this question: I'm in English A: Lang & Lit HL and we are about to write our first written task. I would like to use Socrates' Apology as my source text but of course it was originally in Greek. As long as I reference its translated version, am I allowed to use it as my source text? Thanks for the input!

So, we're doing practice IOPs on Tuesday and I've been trying to figure out how to start working on my IOP. My teacher isn't very helpful, so I thought I'd try to figure it out another way. I chose The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and Persepolis since they're both autobiographies. I want to focus on the theme of confinement and lack of freedom in both...but I have no idea how to make it creative and how to grasp the attention of my classmates (precisely, one classmate. There's only the two of us in English A Literature HL).

I just started english lang lit hl around a month ago, and in-class I thought I was progressing pretty well in analysing literature and practicing essays... But yesterday we had our first assessed assignment which was an in-class essay where we analyse a piece of poetry studied in class with a guiding question and I totally failed. I had no idea how to answer the guiding question and spent like 1 hour thinking about how to answer it, I only had 30m left to write the actual essay... I only managed to write the intro, body 1, and 2 sentences of body 2 before I had to hand it in. How can I try to improve?? I am fine writing essays in my own time but in timed settin…

We have a teacher in the school who practice every IOC extract with each student before the recording. Her class size is small. She only needs 6 extracts. She gives the extracts to students and then practice each IOC extracts with her students one by one. Before the recording, her students have memorized what to say for every extract. I know it does not sound ethical, but is this behavior allowed by IB regulations?

I had to restart my EE cause my original question was based way too much on anthropology rather than history so they thought I should either change question or topic. SO I changed to English. I'm currently deciding on my new topic and I'm looking at either: 1. Looking at the Walking Dead and the use of civil society in a dystopia (focusing more on dictators) and using the Social Contract to help analyze it, I haven't yet started planning how I'd do all of this but I have ideas. 2. Analysing Joji's music and look at the story it tells through the lyrics and possibly music videos and answers through his language. I'm h…

Hi guys, I have a proposal for FOA: Part 1 Language in Cultural Context due on Monday, which is in like tomorrow, and I still have no ideas and I'm still so confused. The teacher has only 'taught' us about Martin Luther King Jr's speech analysis and that's it... Like I don't understand about how we are supposed to do this.. Like we have to have a role when we are delivering our FOA? We're not allowed to give like just simple presentations on the analysis of something? I don't understand... Also, how am I supposed to relate language in culture? Like for example, gender and sexism or whatever, how is that related to culture? What is the relation of bilingualism t…

Hi everyone, So, my teacher introduced us for the first time about this FOA today and apparently we are going to do 2 FOAs, the first one is in this quarter, and the second one is in the next quarter. My teacher told us that for the first one, you can pair up with a classmate because it's our first time or you can do it alone. So, my question is: is it better to pair up or just do it alone? Like did most of you do your FOAs alone or paired or grouped? For the first FOA, we're supposed to base it on Language in Cultural Context, I'm still unsure what kind of stuff I have to do because today was just a simple briefing, but I just want to know early about thi…

Hi, I need to write a written assignment for the external assessment which is the 1500 word literary essay on a work studied in part1. I'm writing my essay on Death and the Maiden by Ariel Dorfman. My guiding question for the essay is "How does Dorfman create conflict between Paulina & Gerardo through the use of dramatic dialogue and how is it resolved?" I plan to constrain it to act 1 scene 1 while linking it to other parts of the play. Do you think that this is an appropriate topic? And I'm not sure about the structure of the essay. What do I start writing with? Please help ASAP!! Thanks

Basically the title. I initially was thinking "biblical allusions in Frankenstein", but my teacher told me it was too broad. Is the more specific version too narrow? I'm kind of thinking of shortening it to "What is the effect of the monster's dual association with Adam and Satan in Frankenstein?", and then I'd talk about the criticism of society's judgements in the speech itself. Would that be a better option?

Hey, I'll be joining IB DP next year. I chose English A, SL as part of my group 1 choice (FYI, I wanted to avoid English A at all cost, but I didn't have a choice). Honestly, I am really weak in reading and analysing text and I feel concerned regarding the state I might be in as a IB English student during my DP years. I am just wondering how difficult English A would be, if I am not really that good in reading, understanding and analysing text, in terms of DP standards. However, I did fairly well in my MYP years as I aced my report with a 5, due to my decency in some analysis and creative writing. Plz help with my situation...

Hey guys, I will be doing my IOP this year, and my topic will be Macbeth and Hamlet ( Macbeth being the book we are reading this year). In terms of comparing the plays, I most likely will speak to Supernatural elements and what makes them both Greek tragedies. There is so much I can compare between these two plays though! However, I'm rather stuck on making it into a creative solo format. When we've done something creative presentation in class, it was with 2+ people. Just wanted to ask any of your previous creative formats for Solo IOPS (just for inspiration /an idea!), or any potential random ideas that come off the top of your head. When I think of …

I have chosen English A: Language and Literature(HL) and I'm going to write my WT1 based on part 3/4 of the IB course. And I have a few questions regarding this: Is dialogue as a text type allowed? I, actually plan to write a dialogue between two fictional characters. One of my characters would be a modern day protagonist (either from a book or a movie) and the other would be from a literary text (Miss Julie or Nora from 'A Doll's House'. I thought this topic would enable me to display the historical, cultural, psychological differences of between the women of today and of the 1870s. I was wondering if such a WT1 would be acceptable by the IB. And if it isn't ac…

My topic was "How does language have the power to influence people", based on the Language and Power unit we did during class for Part 1 of langlit. However, I don't even relate language to culture at all in my presentation, because I don't know how language having power is related in a cultural context. my entire presentation literally revolves around analysing Nelson Mandela's 2 speeches, and how language techniques he used was powerful and influenced the audience. I barely even discuss Language and Power, so my presentation literally feels like an IOC where I just discuss Mandela's speech techniques (ie. he uses anecdote to create a personal feeling, or inclusive langu…

Hi everyone. What are some general tips you could give to me being a first year IB student (not Pre-IB)? My mentality is kind of "flawed" and I'm trying to fix that, to me all I think is that "Oh, it's literature -- how can you fail literature?" and I don't want to keep having that mentality, and time comes to take the IB English Literature exam, and then end up failing. Alongside to that, what're some things I should start doing now to prepare for the IB English Literature exam, and to just be successful in the course overall? Thank you.

I have to do my IOP on Macbeth in about 2 weeks. I was thinking about doing something along the lines of analyzing the sound effects of Macbeth, like the thunder, the bells, the owl, the knocking, etc. and talking about how they play a role in motifs, add suspense, and are used as symbols. Would this be a good idea or should I figure out something else? I just don’t know if I’ll be able to talk about it for 10-15 minutes.

So we have been reading "If This Is A Man" by Primo Levi and have been given the task of writing a reflective statement of no more than 400 words. This is the question we have to answer: How was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through the interactive oral? This is all we have been told and I dont know if it should be more about the actual text or the research I had to do for the interactive oral?
