Hi, Is complex numbers a suitable topic for a Maths SL IA? My plan is to explore what complex numbers are and something about what they can be used for. What do you say, is this a suitable topic or should I pick something else?

Hello, So I have decided that I want to analyze data to see if there is any correlation. I realize that correlation is a Math Studies IA. However, if I incorporated ordinary least squares into the investigation would that be enough? Can anyone give me an idea of what I need to include to increase the level of math used? I have already done some work on this topic, so I would prefer to keep it. Thanks If anyone has any suggestions that would be great

I have found two topics I think would be interesting to do my Maths SL IA on. 1. The Devil's curve. Is writing an exploration of this curve too difficult at standard level? http://mathworld.wolfram.com/DevilsCurve.html The calculations look complicated at least.. So, what do you think? 2. Lissajous curves. These look cool but perhaps even more complicated than the devil's curve? Would it be suitable to do an IA on these curves? http://mathforum.org/mathimages/index.php/Lissajous_Curve It would be interesting to investigate why they look like they do and how and why they change when the parameters are altered. My current topic is about the Richter scale, and I am …

Is there a strict page limit on the math exploration. I know of the 12 pages limit but if you go over it do you just get a small penalty on the communication criteria or do the examiners not even read beyond the 12 pages? Thank you.

Hey! I'm taking math SL and I'm really struggling right now. I try my best, but when it comes to exam type questions, I blank out. Are there great any ways that I can improve because I can't switch down to math studies as my school only offers HL and SL and if I had to switch down, I'd have to change schools, but I don't want to because the university I want to attend doesn't accept math studies..

Hi, I have planned to write my Maths IA about the Richter scale but I am unsure if the amount of maths will be enough? If I explore the Richer scale and include an example of how it can be used, and another about how much energy the magnitude of the earthquake corresponds, will that then be sufficient amount of maths? Is there some amount of maths that is generally recommended? Lynxarin

Would a statistical study on the 2016 presidential race be a somewhat decent math sl ia? I would analyze the correlation between the number of times a candidate has visited a state and the number of votes/precincts they got. I would also correlate the proximity of the state a candidate governs or represents to their success in other states. Needless to say, i would have a number of scatterplots and would perform a linear regression on my data to seek a line of best fit. Would this be a successful IA, or should it be more complex? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for improvement, or even criticisms. Thanks!

If I want to fit a curve to plotted data points, do I just take a general equation such as y=mx+b or y=a(x-h)2+k and plug in x/y values and calculated the difference between the actual point and the curve and just keep trying different equations until I've minimized the distance? I need to make a parabola for IA....

Hey guys! I am doing my Maths IA for SL level. I am exploring a volume of an object using volume of revolution (firstly by obtaining an equation of a line by measuring the object using a ruler). However I have looked over the internet and I´ve seen that people generally say that this topic is suitable for HL rather than SL. On the other hand this topic is in our syllabus.. Can you please confirm me that this is a suitable topic for SL? Thanks!

I was writing an IA on an application of calculus to economics (law of diminishing returns type thing) and it turned out that it was too simple; not much can be shown with just that law and simply differentiating the data I had...so now in order to save my grade I probably have to add a different aspect to it and make it a general application of calculus IA than a diminishing returns IA... are there any mathematical methods that are applicable if I have this type of data to work with/on: -various expense costs -revenues -units sold (I don't have labour quantity, which kinda sucks) Basically, are there any laws or formulas or whatnot that I can look into for a day or two…

Hello, For my math IA I'm investigating the relationship between Pascal's Triangle and compound interest. To do this, I need to find the ratio of successive row products, which can be seen in the equation below. I understand dividing the sequence of products with n + 1 by the sequence of products with n, but I don't understand why the sequence of products equation would be k!^(-2) and why there would be (n+1)!^(n+2) divided by n!^(n+1). For reference, the equation for sequence of products in a row of Pascal's Triangle is in the picture above. Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

I have an introduction & data , but I'm so confuse on what we actually need . I don't know how to move forward . I will be looking at states that legalized marijuana and comparing the before & after crime rates. And possibly indicating if their is a relationship between them. I was thinking of using correlation coefficient, but then again my knowledge on that is very vague. Can someone please how me ? Is there another way to indicate a relationship between two variables? Thank you.

Hi, I'm doing my IA on Baye's Theorem and how it can be used to understand the probabilities derrived from medical testing. I originally wanted to do it on Colorectal Cancer but as it comes out it is hard to find any sufficient database which would provide coherent numbers that I need. I tried to do it with pregnancy tests but the data i found is from a study which already did most calculations and I'm scared to use it, so nobody thinks it's plagarised. So I had an idea of presenting the probability working but on an example of an imaginary disease. Do you think its a good idea? Or should I just stick with the pregnancy tests? Thanks for help in advance

Hey guys, Its just been stressful this month cause IAs, however, one IA I can't figure out is math explorations. I already screwed up for not handing a draft. I am still kinda empty. But I can work towards that. I was wondering though... Does anyone have like an outline we can follow cause our teacher gave us one vague questions sheet about our explorations and that it. No like you need a rationale or body or conclusion. Just do it type of thing. Is there any way someone can give me some sort of outline to follow? Thanks, appreciate any answers!

I'm lost on what a math IA is like...is real life data collection/usage as important here as it is in a science IA? Are there any cases where you can basically take a formula, and use numbers that are NOT real statistics? Also, does the IA have to solve a specific problem? I was reading an IA (the one about Florence Nightingale's polar diagrams) and it felt like it was basically the writer creating their own diagrams using some data he/she found. I understnad in that example the person basically created these diagrams without "instructions" and that was pretty difficult, but I can't imagine structuring an RQ around that... Maybe I'm too stuck in the perspective of sci…

Ok so I'm reviewing for my math midterm right now and we had a sub the last math class I had and she didn't teach us anything, so we were on our own for these problems. There is this one problem I'm really stuck on. The question: "A cylindrical boiler with an open top is to be built from stainless steel with a copper bottom. […] Determine the most economical dimensions for the boiler if the volume is 5π m3. " The answer should be: r=1 and h=5. I know that you look for the minimum for this but I keep getting this question wrong. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks

Hi, I am a Gr.11 IB Student in in Canada. I have never been really good at math, I barely got an 83% in Gr.10 HL math. For all my past tests, I have received nothing over a level 4. I work very hard and I don't miss any homework, I do all the adequate studying, but I still receive a 4. I recently got a 1 and 2 on my calculus and curve sketching tests, 2 tests which worked so hard for. I have a tutor, but it really does not help, because I can get help on the questions I want, but a tutor can't really teach me to be smart. I want to leave IB, but I really don't have any other friends in other schools. It's just math I'm doing bad in, I'm doing pretty bad in every other su…

Hi, I've just finished my first semester of IB and i'm finding most of the subjects i'm taking okay, but maths SL is a real struggle for me. I understand the concepts when they are taught in class, but find the jump from the questions we do in class to the questions in the tests HUGE. Has anyone else found that there is a huge leap between the questions in the exercise books and the ones in the exam? Also mainly does anyone have any suggestions on books that I can get that have more involved questions that can perhaps prepare me better for the exams? What is the Math SL exam like as well? Is it really that hard?! Thanks for your help in advance

I'm a bit too deep for this to not work but (for the IA)...is regressional analysis the only way to try to fit data poitns to a curve? I have sets of cost values that I can plot on a graph but I need something to create a curve so I can apply calculus to it. It's sort of a two-step process that I wish I looked deeper into before choosing my topic.. First I get a function and then I find max/min points; without step one it seems too simple and with it it's a WHOLE lot of work for SL level In other words, how do people approaching modelling IAs? For my IA, I am currently considering writing a sort of "study" on Euler's number, e. I've collected data from 30 students at my school, and have their names in an excel sheet alongside the raw data collection. Is it ethical to keep their names, or should I anonymise it to protect their identity? I know in psychology, I had to list them as Participant 1, Participant 2,.. and so on, but is this required in maths as well?
