Hey everyone. So, for my math IA I'm planning to create a mathematical model to represent a leap of faith from Assassin's Creed (a jump from a really tall building), but I have a couple of questions I hope one of you could answer. Given that AC is a videogame, then I won't be able to use air resistance as a factor, so I'm scared that without it my work would be considered too simple. Because of that, I was thinking that I could create the equation and then find the probability of surviving the jump if I were to try it. Or maybe I could simply create the equation for the videogame first and then just use data from the real world and see how long it would take m…

I am struggling to come up with an idea for my Math SL IA. The best idea I have come up with so far is the following: My home is exactly four blocks south and four blocks west from the bus stop my sister and I go to every morning. I want to calculate how many different routes there are from here to there, and the probability of my sister taking the same route as me/taking half of the same route as me half the way, and another one from there/walking a route that doesn't even touch my route/etc... However, as I'm in Math SL, not Studies, I'm a little bit concerned that this topic idea is too simple... Is it? If it is, what can I possibly add to it to make it a bit mor…

Hello! A few of my IA topics have been rejected, so I've become more anxious about having a topic and approaching my teacher about it. However, on some website I found the idea of graphing an image/symbol onto a cartesian plane with functions, and this has greatly interested me as I deal with photoshop often. I was wondering if this was enough as an SL topic? For example, if I'd find functions to graph the IB logo, or several different logos. Thank you for your time!

Hey guys!!!! I have been struggling to come up with a topic for my Math SL IA since the last couple of weeks. I finally have a few ideas. I would like to know whether these ideas are appropriate for standard level. I was thing of using Catalan numbers to find the number of ways a convex polygon of n+2 sides can be split into triangles by connecting vertices OR Using Catalan numbers to find the number of ways to connect the points on a circle with disjointed chords. Any help would be greatly appreciated !!! Thank you!

Hey guys i'm a junior in Math SL and right now i'm working on my IA, The rubric says that a conjecture is needed to get a 4 on the E criterion and a Proof is needed for a 5 in the E criterion, so in my ia i am studying the correlation between movie production budgets and its domestic gross. what i have done so far is collecting 100 pieces of data, finding the Pearson correlation coefficient value, regression line equation (with graphs) and predictions using the regression line equation (using a known movie budget to predict the future domestic gross). My problem revolves around if i were to do a conjecture with my prediction how would i show proof that it worked? wou…

Hey, So I've decided to do my Math IA on Time Dilation for the SL Syllabus I was just looking for opinions, on whether its a good idea or not and if I could score very well on it. All suggestions and thoughts are appreciated. I've focused more on the easier explanation for time dilation by just looking at it in special relativity problems as opposed to general relativity (the latter is more confusing and requires more abstract Math). How do you guys think I could make it better? Thanks

Hi! For my IA I wanted to do something involving floral design. (I am a little obsessed with flowers and a lot of my stuff is floral so I thought it would be a good personal interest to explore) I want to somehow create a floral arrangement mathematically but am a little stuck as to how to go about doing that. The forms of floral arrangements are based on geometric shapes and I was thinking of modeling them graphically and using that to create my own. Also, according to this website I found, spherical trigonometry is used but that website mostly showed that with pictures and not with explanations. Hey people! Does the following topic sound suitable for a Math SL IA? An exploration of graphic software to make art through math equations. My exploration would be that of finding the equation of each line or shape that makes up Pikachu. Are there any changes that should be made to make it more complicated to suit a Math SL IA or is it fine as it is? Thank you!

So I have been thinking of a math IA. I have seen some poor graded math ia's online such as the one with minesweeper and correlation between poverty and gdp of a country. I really want to get this math ia some direction. Right now, I'm thinking of a way to use algebra to solve minesweeper or build up on the poverty/gdp of a country. These are my only 2 ideas, can you guys help me with some ideas. Also, can you suggest ways for me to show the correlation between poverty and gdp of a country.

Hey guys, im a junior in Math SL and was wondering if i could get some help to advance my IA My IA is based off finding the correlation between domestic gross and the production budget of US movies and then using it to predict a future movies succes by just knowing the production budget, The math i currently have is: Pearson's correlation coefficient equations, regression lines and prediction equations. My problem is my math teacher said i should add more advance math on top of what i already have, he recommend using other line functions to find a better fit line for my data, but is there any other statistical math that i can apply to my investigation that…

Also for this specific topic, I'm lost about what i could do, do i have to pick a song and make sine waves of those notes?? I have no idea how to look into this topic and what should i apply it to could i get any advice, resources or any procedures? Thank you!!

Hey, I'm just starting the Diploma Programme this year and taking SL Maths. I was wondering if anyone had any study techniques, or any tips in general, in order to do well in the Maths SL course. Secondly, I'd like to know if anyone has any good resources to find Maths SL past papers online. So yeah, any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as I don't know what to expect, to be honest.

Hello guys, we're currently working with our IAs, and I haven't yet to find a good topic. I did, however, come across one thing that I would like to investigate. Logic. Do you guys think it's possible to do an IA on logic? Does it fit the criteria? My teacher isn't really that helpful, and I don't really understand the syllabus. I'm stupid, basically. Thanks.

Hey Guys, IB has really messed my mind up by asking me to make IAs for every subject i take. I was planning to do my IA in missile interception but it was too advanced and it required aeronautical engineering and mathematics. I then got a suggestion from my friend who graduated from IB this year and he told me to do calculus and Cricket. But, as usual, im lost and i have no clue where to begin.... Any suggestions would be of great help.

Hello, My teacher suggested to pick a topic that we are really interested in for our Math SL IA. I wrote out list of things I liked, and I felt that architecture was the only one where I could actually get a lot of personal engagement in the IA. I wanted to have a "theoretical" simple building, where I would use optimization to find the best dimensions for a set amount of materials. Then I would use trig to find form a roof, and add the additional costs there. I am completely lost if this is what I am supposed to do or not, because all the examples he showed had students finding a formula, or an answer that served a purpose. Does my IA have to find an answer or …

Hello everyone! I need to figure out what I'll be writing my math IA about before 7th of September and I'm freaking out! Before summer my teacher showed us some examples of good and bad IAs and the ones that scored 18-20 marks are the ones that I totally didn't understand because they were so complex, and it honestly scared me! So when I tried to understand what I want to write my IA about, it was hard for me to even settle on a topic, because whenever I thought about something, I was thinking that I wouldn't be able to write a lot about it and thus dropped it. Finally I settled of the easiest topic I could think of - Pythagoras theorem. It's one of a few that I'm …

Hi, after looking around for possible math ia topics, I became interested in pyramid schemes. However, I'm not sure how much and what content I can write on it, only the different models and how they work. The only math that will be used is exponential sequences, along with some graphs or tables showing the growth in members, which I'm afraid won't be enough. How can I go beyond just showing the different models, how they work, and the math on their sustainability?

I'm having trouble with expanding on my ME topics and don't know what to include My first idea was to use statistics to find the correlation between the height of children and their parents, but I'm not sure what to do to make it more substantial. I'm facing the same problem with my second idea, where I wanted to use trig to find the optimal angle for swimmers to plunge from the plunging block. My teacher said to find a function for that but I'm still very confused as to how to go about doing a whole ME on that since it also includes projectile motion. My proposal is due in a week and I would really appreciate the help!!

hello i need some opinions regarding my math ia. i decided to investigate about the obedience of the preschool children. and my hypothesis is girls is more obedient compared to boys. but i have a problem of analysing my data as i observe their obedience through the designed activity. it is qualitative data. there are 3 activities and if they obediently done all the activities, they will get 3/3. but if they don't do one activity out of 3, they will get 2/3. i decided to do chi squared test but i think it is not enough for my IA. So, i think that i should change my data into quantitative data. so do you have any opinions of turning my qualitative data into quantitati…

So for my IA im predicting the most likely to win become president based on their age. So i worked out the mean and standard deviation in order to draw the normal distribution curve. both clinton and trump are within one probability area of 2.15%. How can i accurately find their probability since they are only one year apart (before i had sanders for more variety but hes gone so :/) SO I USED P(X < 69) and P(X<70) i'm not sure how to do it, like how do i find just the probability for one age and not P (50<X<60) or something?? because i can't do P(X=69)

Hey guys, So for my math exploration, I was thinking of doing something that has to do with Prisoner's dilemma (Here is a pic explaining it). My idea was to first explain and analyze the theory, and calculate the chances (in percentages/fractions) of Prisoner A & B's options, and later show the reader which option is the best one to take with the help of theory of probability. I would later put this in examples, like in economics, during the cold war (nuclear stockpilling) and so on. I am really nervous concerning this seeing as it is so easy to choose a bad idea, and would like to have someone else's perspective before I start. Thank yo…

Hi guys! I wanted to ask for any suggestions of things I could add to my math IA. Im gonna do it about the mathematics in tennis and I've already got a few ideas but as we all know that in IB they love when we add things that are considered of a higher level, I'd wanted to ask you for any suggestions you could have that could make me expand a little bit my IA and make it more interesting and appealing. For example I thought about finding the equation of the parabola with matrixes, which we dont study in IB. So any ideas please answer this post! Thanks very much!! Claudia

Hey guys, I am studying MATH SL and I still have to chose the topic. I am pretty much interested in calculus. And I think optimization is mostly what I am interested in! I am just finding a situation where I can apply it, at One point I though of applying it in agriculture where minimum land and maximum crops. But I dont know how appropriate it is? Could you please suggest me with some! or something else in calculus that I can apply in economics too!

Maybe you wrote an exploration about game theory and have some materials, links, videos that could be useful? I know i am asking for a lot but right now i dont know how to start working on my IA and i should have had at least done some reading by now so i am freaking out. Thanks in advance.

I've been trying to come up with an idea for a Math IA in the realm of basketball statistics, but my teacher is not answering emails and I'm not satisfied with the only thing I can think of. All I've been able to think of so far is analyzing the increasing trend in accuracy and distance of shots in the NBA in looking at how the definition of a "good" shot has changed (in other words the greater propensity for taking 3-pointers, and players greater ability to make them changing what shots are acceptable on an NBA court). I just don't see that there's enough actual math to do in that for a successful IA. Can anyone confirm if this would work, or suggest something better in …
