Hello, I found a question on my Haese Maths SL Textbook I couldn't solve regarding exponentials: Solve for x in 12*3^-x = 4/3 What I first did was multiply everything by 3: 3(12*3^-x) = 4 -> 36*3^-x+1 = 4. Then I divided the 4 by 36, which simplifies to 1/9: 3^-x+1 = 4/36 -> 3^-x+1 = 1/9 1/9 is the same as 1/3^2 = 3^-2, thus the equation becomes: 3^-x+1 = 3^-2 Since we have equal bases: -x + 1 = -2 -> -x = -3 -> x = 3 Thus I found x = 3. However, in the answers section of the textbook, it states that x = 2. How do I get x = 2? Is there a step/concept I'm misunderstanding as I've redid the problem 3 times…

Hey, for my math IA im doing cooling of a car engine. My objective is to determine how much time it has to pass for the engine´s temperature to be okay for it to be touched. Its related to personal experience. I collected my data and got an exponential decay graph as predicted. Can you guys suggest ideas? I have some but not sure about them.

Hey everyone, I'm running a bit late for my Math SL IA, since I had to change a topic. I want to ask if a topic like the following one will be to simple for Math SL course? "How does the amount of sleep affect a person's school performance" I'm afraid that this topic might be a bit off track or to easy? Thank you!

Hey guys! I´m doing my math IA on the cooling of a car engine. I was expecting to get an exponential decay regression but I got a logarithmic regression.I collected my own data using a sensor thermometer, Im using non- linear regression. I don´t know how to make the outline of my investigation. Should I use Newton´s Law of Cooling? Maybe try do the exponential regression and find the coefficient correlation and then compare to the logarithmic´s and go against the alleged ¨exponential decay function for thermodynamics? I´m not aiming to get a 20, too frustrated for that. I need a 16 to get a 6 in the IB which was my predicted before the IA came.

Hi to all, I need abit of help with my Maths IA. I am doing mine on the game carrom. First i had thought of finding 3 different angles or positions to score a carrom men using a striker. I am not sure if this sounds good or if it will be a good IA or not. So if u guys could provide your views on this it would be much appreciated. Second idea was to analyze the whole game and find three difficult positions to score and form triangles and use trig to find angles once i find the distance in cm. I could then use cosine or sine rule, pythogoras theorem or SOH CAH TOA to find the angle to hit the striker at. I then thought of using calculus to find the rate at which carrom men …

Hi, I am a student in the US and you need a certain number of math classes before they allow you to take IB Math. Because of that I wasn't able to take the first year. How hard do you think it will be if I took the second year only. Does the second year cover the first year too, or how does it work? I plan on studying engineering which is why I don't want to take Math Studies. However, if it will be too difficult I will.

I know the answer is obviously yes, but I mean does it matter how you arrive to an answer as long as the method is not flawed? 24 hours have not yet passed, so I can't go into detail, but as long as the method is mathematically sound but is not the way it is normally taught, you'll get the full marks, right?

Hi! I'm currently doing my Mathematics IA on the mathematics behind a parachute jump. I wanted to find the time, path and landing coordinates of a jump, comparing it to a jump that actually happened. Unfortunately, I can't find a simulator OR any information about an actual jump (speed, time, coordinates etc...). Any idea where I could find something along those lines? Would be much appreciated.

Hi everyone, I've been having problems with the answers coming out my GDC, specifically the Casio fx-9750GII. 1) The linear regression equations it calculates (ax+b) from data sets are always subtly different to what appears in the mark scheme. I've tried using a+bx and fiddling with the settings, but nothing seems to change them. 2) When trying to use grouped frequency data in the stats mode, it often outputs incorrect information for standard deviation and things like that. 3) The nCd and nPd results are sometimes a little different, although I might just be using them wrong- how do I know when to use which one? Any advice? It's a bit nervewrac…

Hi for my mathematics investigation, I have been calculating the effect of velocity when the distance is extended. I have taken freefall into account and have used the Oregon state university to find an expression which correctly shows the velocity. http://oregonstate.edu/instruct/mth252h/Bogley/w02/resist.html However, I have found that my calculated value is much different to the value when I use the simple equation (distance/time). Are the calculations from this website wrong? and will I be penalised, or is distance over time an inaccurate representation? Thanks,

Hey Guys! In paper 2 where we are allowed to used our calculator, what extent are we allowed to use it to find the answers? Like sometimes, the question will give us a velocity equation and ask us whats the acceleration at a certain point. Although I could differentiate it and do it manually, I could just graph the function and find the derivative at that point, skipping working entirely. So how much are we allowed to take advantage of this? Also, when we answer in the exam, are we only allowed to write until where the lines end, or where the box ends? usually there will be 6-7 lines, but the box extends to the ends of the page. Are we allowed to w…

Hi, So I'm been doing loads of past papers in maths and I was wondering: can points be taken off for using the GDC? For example, as I have a TI-84+, I can do the invnorm, normalcdf etc for non-standardised means and standard deviations without calculating the standardised value z. However, when I look at markschemes, they seem to suggest that you need to have worked out the z value... But I still get the correct result and show all of my working so surely it should be fine? If anyone has any insight I'd be grateful as I'm not going to see my teacher for a while. Daisy

So I was looking at criterion D : Reflection This criterion assesses how the student reviews, analyses and evaluates the exploration. Although reflection may be seen in the conclusion to the exploration, it may also be found throughout the exploration. 1) What does this mean 2) How are you meant to show this in your maths IA Thanks!

Hi for my math exploration I'm hoping to find a function that accurately represents the growing population of China. So far I've fitted linear and an exponential curve onto my data and gotten the equation. However I believe that a logistic curve would be the ideal equation but I'm currently using Logger Pro and I have no idea how to fit a logistic curve onto my data. Any help would be very appreciated as this exploration is due very soon!

Particle P is initially at the origin. It moves with the velocity function v(t) = t2 - t - 2 cm/s. a) Write a formula for the displacement function s(t). This is the integral of the velocity function. So, s(t) = t3/3 - t2/2 - 2t b) Find the total distance travelled in the first 3 seconds of motion. Ok. This is the part I am having difficulty with. So, I set the v(t) = 0 and solved for t. I got t = 2 and t = -1 I substituted those 2 numbers in the s(t) equation; s(2) = -10/3 s(-1) = -5/6 I then did s(3) = 0 and s(0) = 0 Doing that, the Total distance formula says to absolute vale the v(t) function. So I did abs(v(3)-v(-1)) bu…

So I´m currently on a 2 week break from school so I wanted to take enough time to come up with a good topic for my IA. I want to do it about the recent terrorist attacks and some of the comments from the republican candidates (saying that muslims shouldn´t enter the country because they might be terrorists). I planned on doing something related to correlation or probability, but I´ve read that those topics are not strong enough for sl. Should I add something else? I haven´t seen calculus in my course but maybe I could use it in my exploration aswell... But i dont know. Should I look for another topic?

Hey All! I just did my Maths Mock Exam for Standard Level, I am aware that a candidate will only be graded on the content that they write within the answer boxes, however, I was under the assumption that you are allowed to ask for scrap paper. So, this is something I'm mulling over a bit, whether or not I should go with Maths SL or go for the Maths Studies SL. I am solid 5ing Maths SL and I am seriously not cutting the cheese. I need 7s for my goals. So, my aim is Medicine (yes, I understand that Maths is important-ish in terms of medicine.) I'm confident that I can score a 7 in Maths Studies and I know that Sydney University won't require Mathematics as a prerequisite until 2019, which will be essentially a year after I graduate. So it shouldn't affect me and there are no entry requirements, therefore I can make it into pre-med, if (big ifs here) I get 45 and I do Maths Studies. However, the thing is, Maths …

Hello, I've recently started working on my Math IA. I needed to choose something that would include Calculus or Math Analysis. After choosing optimization as my topic, I tried to use it by figuring out the size of a box in which to package a computer case. After doing the math and finding the estimated volume, I wasn't sure what else to add. I got feedback from my teacher saying, "It shouldn't just be solving the problem". I was very confused on what she must have meant. What else should I be adding? I was thinking about the foam (space it takes up in the box) that is used in packaging to protect the case but I don't know what else I should be adding.

Hello everyone. I'm revising for my exams this may and I have some troubles with part (b) of this question: "A curve is such that dy/dx = 4x + 1/(x+1)2 for x>0 . The curve passes through the point (1/2, 5/6). " a) Find the equation of the curve. My result is : y = 2x2+ 1/(x+1) +1 b) "Find the equation of the normal to the curve at the point where x=1" Do I put the x value into this equation to find the y-co ordinate?(When calculated, y= 5/2) I don't know what to do. Do I take the derivative and calculate it that way? Any help/suggestion would be appreciated!
