I's writing on the title: Ethical judgements limit the methods available in the production of knowledge in both the arts and the natural sciences. Discuss. I keep seeing online that people are stressing directly answering the title, but how is that handled from a discuss perspective?

Greetings! I have a question regarding Topic 3 for May 2014 specifically and TOK essays in general. The topic is: “Knowledge is nothing more than the systematic organisation of facts.” Discuss this statement in relation to two areas of knowledge. Now the topic clearly states "two areas of knowledge" however, my TOK coordinator is suggesting that I include three. I do have good matter to write about in three areas, but should I ignore the topic and go for three? or should I just elaborate two more? Thanks!

Me and my group are discussing: How can we determine whether the collection of personal data is justified? I was now thinking wheter I should talk about psychology or criminology in terms of personal data collected. How would we define personal data in psychology? However I have no real ideas about what to talk about. Would anyone have suggestions or ideas to this topic? Thanks

Hey! I have a presentation coming up to which I shall base my RLS on a trial of a holocaust denier with the KI being: "what is historical truth and how would perception influence this?" How would you recommend going about this? What certain theories/structures would be ideal for this presentation?

Is art better placed than standard historical writing to convey the personal experiential aspects of historical events? I did I practice tok oral where I previously had the question of "Are there types of historical knowledge that are better conveyed through art than through factual historical sources?". So when preparing for my final tok presentation my teachers allowed me to use the same presentation but to change the question and real life situation. So I have come up with the question is on top: "Is art better placed than standard historical writing to convey the personal experiential aspects of historical events?" . But however I am not happy with the wording of th…

Hey guys, I'm currently doing the TOK essay topic "Ethical judgments limit the methods available in the production of knowledge in both the arts and the natural sciences" And so for my examples, I will use the 1.Tuskegee syphilis experiment (Unethical testing on a slective race (negros)) 2. The Degenerate Museum in Germany (Deems certain artwork and artists unethical due to race or message within artwork) 3. Lysenko Ethics on crops (Lysenko uses irrationality to boast his methods on raising crops, impeding reasoning) So for my claims and counter claimsin respect to my examples are: 1. Claim: Being unable to test on humans may not allow us to gain information, as it rules …

I have a question regarding TOK Essays: I am class of May 2014, so do I choose from the May 2014 titles or November 2013? The reason is, is because our TOK class ended last year and we therefore wrote our TOK essays by choosing from prescribed titles from November 2013.

So I recently uploaded my TOK essay, not realizing that I did not need to upload it as soon as I got my Personal code and PIN. I removed the essay but I'm not quite sure how the 24 hour leniency period works. Do I have to upload the new version within 24 hours of the original upload or does the 24 hour period only refer to the time you are given to remove the essay?

So I'm doing topic one for my TOK essay and I was wondering just how many knowledge issues I should include in the essay. I know I definitely want 1 of them to be "Where do we get our ethical code from?" or something along the line of that, but do I need more than that one? Also how are knowledge issues and claims/counter claims connected? Are my claims/ counter claims supposed to come from my knowledge issue? Or can they be different?

Hey guys, About the TOK essay, I have chosen title #4 for the may 2014 exams. This may sound like a silly question, but I just need a clarification.. so if this is the question “That which is accepted as knowledge today is sometimes discarded tomorrow.” Do I still need to come up with a seperate knowledge issue? Like wouldn't my knowledge issue just be restating the question? Or do I need to incorporate my aoks/woks into the KI too? Thanks!

I have a sample TOK presentation due in two days. I'm in DP1 so it isn't that important. I still want to do fairly well. I wanted to do something related to Economics so I thought I'd do something related to communism or another controversial means of governance. I can't seem to formulate a question. Ideas would be appreciated preferably Economics related. I'll probably present in the old fashioned way - powerpoint and spoken word. Cheers,

my tok essay will be on the prescribed title #1: Ethical judgements limit the methods available in the production of knowledge in both the arts and the natural sciences. Discuss. is this implying that i should weigh out the pros and cons or..? my tok teachers are the worst because my school doesn't hire proper tok teachers...they're just drama teachers who claim they have been to some tok courses and what not so i can't really ask them for help because i won't get any help or feedback from them :-\

Hello Everyone, I was doing some research and I needed to find out how exactly the Arts are a form of knowledge. How do we gain knowledge from the arts? For example, the sciences give us facts about the natural world around us through which we understand and hence gain knowledge. However, I don't really quite understand the Arts. I tried reading the books I have but I don't really get it and it isn't really explained. Can someone please explain it to me? Thank you so much. I appreciate it.

Hello Everyone I've seen a post about this Prescribed Title somewhere, however I wanted to ask some questions about the types of AoK that come to mind/how to use them appropriately and usefully in the essay. 6. "A skeptic is one who is willing to question any knowledge claim, asking for clarity in definition, consistency in logic and adequacy of evidence" (adapted from Paul Kurtz, 1994). Evaluate this approach in two areas of knowledge. This prompt got me thinking about some of the following topics -skepticism and it's meaning (how it contributes to the development of theories and ideals) -the difference between knowledge and faith, and how it applies here (AoK ethics?) -…

Hello guys! I'm a new person on the forum. I need some help on the TOK Essay, as I'm kind of stuck. I agree with this claim. Firstly, I'm going to explore the wording of the question. Sometimes: This implies of some knowledge claims are discarded, and some stay. This relates to the word discarded, as how discarded might not really mean discarded as we know it. It could be like evolution, as old theories are constantly being "evolved" by new theories, they are discarded. But we can say they're not discarded, but rather, the old theories simply were assimilated within the new theories and "evolved." This would correlate to the sometimes thing, as some are completely disca…

Help me with this example: Is there a causation between cancer and smoking or just a strong correlation? is it a causation if smoking will always cause a physical change in your cells, which in turn causes cancer, or is it a causation between smoking and causing a change in your cells but not between smoking and getting cancer, because there are many other factors (immunity, genes, etc.) that determine whether you are going to develop cancer at all. hope you get what im saying, cheers

Hi there! Right now I'm in the middle of the TOK Essay process and I am so stuck. It is due next week ,and I'm starting to panic more or less, so I would be extremely grateful for some help :-) So my knowledge issue is; "To what extent is knowledge temporary?". And I have chosen to consider the AOK:S History and Natural Science. I have so far come up with some quite relevant examples (both supporting and contradicting that knowledge is temporary) within Natural Science. What I have a huge problem with is that I cannot come up with a contradicting example when it comes to History. I.e. something within History that is not temporary. After a lot of thinking it almost seems …

Hey everyone! I know this is late, everyone has already done their tok paper but in my school we're still in the process of doing the paper. I chose number 5, which is, "The historian's task is to understand the past; the human scientist, by contrast, is looking to change the future." To what extent is this true in these areas of knowledge? I already got some ideas on what I want to do, like the real life situation for my paper because I already did a paper on history before. But I'm really confused on cooperating both human science and history to my knowledge issue, and to have a KI that is well suited to my essay. I have chosen title 3 for my ToK essay. However, I need some help with my essay. Does anyone have any ideas? I have chosen to answer this question with reference to natural sciences and ethics. Which examples could I use?? I get the main idea. Knowledge is a process that involves the systematic organisation of facts BUT also requires the analysis/interpretation/experience/context of these facts. For example, a computer may systematically compile data on the characteristics of a person or thing without actually knowing the person or thing. As a keen geography student, I would like to try and use global warming as an example for natural sciences. Also if anyone has any link…

So, my teacher sprung the TOK presentation on us and we have a week to complete it. Yes, a week. I've decided to go alone on this one to pursue my interests pertaining to the arts, and I have a great idea for my knowledge question but I don't know how to word it properly. I want to look into the controversy of ill-placed art such as graffiti, and whether art placed illegally is still art. Or something like that. Hi guys, I'm having a bit trouble with choosing what tok topic I should do. For my personal/real life example I'm using an excerpt from Lewis Carrol's Through The Looking Glass: "[...] There's glory for you!" "I don't know what you mean by 'glory,'" Alice said. Humpty Dumpty smiled contemptuously. "Of course you don't—till I tell you. I meant 'there's a nice knock-down argument for you!'" "But 'glory' doesn't mean 'a nice knock-down argument'," Alice objected. "When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean—neither more nor less." "The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things." I've always had trouble creating KIs and this is a…

Hi guys, I've been spending 3 DAYS trying to work on #4 "That which is accepted as knowledge today is sometimes discarded tomorrow." Consider 2 AOK . Firstly, I thought that this should be easy as it is so obviously "true" in Natural Science as there are some/many theories which have been falsified. And I can as well make a distinction with Mathematics as a counterclaim (based on axioms, rigorous proofs...) and it is rarely falsified although there were some instances it did. I have tried to attempt on discussing the methodology .... scientific method the nature of revisionism in science.... but it seems to be not critical and my head is totally convoluted. It seems tha…
