Hi I'm in the midst of writing my first draft (we started late) of the TOK essay, but I've been stuck from the beginning. I find it interesting and like the question (I chose #4) but just can't seem to get ahang of what to do. ("That which is accepted as knowledge today is sometimes discarded tomorrow. Consider KIs raised in two AOK.") I've chosen to look at natural science and religion, but I'm starting to question my chce of religion. Mostly because it's not a mandatory AOK to study in TOK (thereby, would I be allowed to take it for my essay?), and because it's hard to come up with knowledge issues I could discuss... Okay, who am I fooling, I've sort of not really got…

Ok, so does anyone know about this "implication" aspect in criteria C? Like what exactly does it means to include implication in arguments, since I'm feeling that it will be like leading off-topic right now? An example would be great!! Thanks

Hi, guys well my teacher was in the hospital she had lung cancer and she was fighting but didn't make it... and I was wondering what is going to happen next ? if someone has seen a situation like this and by the way because she was at the hospital we ( not me) did our presentations and record them on a camera so that she could mark them from the hospital. I have having the hardest time trying to find a knowledge question for this. Can some help me with giving me a rough idea of how i can do this?

So I know that each student has the opportunity to earn 3 points from the E.E. and TOK. I do have the chart that tells you how many points you get according to your grade in each one. But I don't understand the one for TOK, I was predicted a 38 on my essay, which is A, and got a 14 on my mock presentation, which is a C. I'm still missing my real presentation, but let's imagine I get a 14. So, for the final grade is it a B? Or because I did got a high A on my essay, can it be an A? And what is the minimum (if I do get a 38 on my essay) that I have to have in my presentation to get an A on the overall TOK grade?

I'm having trouble with KIs in my TOK Presentation. Is this an okay knowledge issue: To what extent does social media affect users' happiness through language and appeal to emotion? Or do I need to use social media as my real-life example and have a KI along the lines of this: How are the human sciences affected by language and emotion? I'm not really sure as to how a KI is different from just a research question.

Hi, I was looking at some sample presentation structure and it says that after i've developed my knowledge issue, i must link it back to the main real life situation as well as other situations. So, do these other situations have to be related to the main one or should they be completely different? can someone please explain this in detail? i'd appreciate examples as well thanks

Hi i kinda need a little help thinking of a knowledge issue for my presentation this friday. I was thinking of using the NSA spying scandal etc. as my real life situation. Is "what role does privacy play in the acquisition of knowledge?" a good KI?. Any suggestions would be much appreciated

I chose this topic for my TOK essay, i clearly defined ethical judgments i stated that they vary from region to region and culture to culture, i give personal examples where my teacher's ethical judgments limited me to use animals for the science experiment and to draw a nude sketch of a women. I used examples in the sciences where ethical judgments limit the methods in stem cells research, and give a specific example of animal testing in GRU university and i gave counterclaims of alternatives to animal testing. IN the arts i included controversial art pieces and i even gave specific examples where ethical judgments limited the methods available by banning the displacemen…

Hello! I am currently having some troubles on getting along with my tok essay. I am doing my tok essay on the 2nd question. My knowledge issue is: "To what extent ways of knowing can be seen as tools to pursue knowledge?" I have decided to take a look on how ways of knowing are different in arts and human sciences. How could I answer my knowledge issue?

Hi! So I have my TOK presentation on Friday, and I would like to get some opinions on this. My KI is is it ever right to take someone's privacy away for the purpose of security, and my RLS is the truth serum. The truth serum is classified by the UN and EU as a mean of torture, and by some agencies as a mind-control device. BUT ultimately, it does sometimes squeeze some elements of truth out of people, which can increase security. So My question to you is what do YOU think? Should we value privacy or security more? Personally I'm against the truth serum, and I want to see what others think. Thanks!

“That which is accepted as knowledge today is sometimes discarded tomorrow.” Consider knowledge issues raised by this statement in two areas of knowledge. So I've chosen this question as my TOK essay but before I start writing out, I want to discuss this question with everyone and get ideas. So to benefit everyone else who chose this topic, let's all discuss about the given question and try to come up with good ideas.

So I opted for this title for tok essay, and I pretty much narrowed it down to this The two aok's Mathematics Arts Now I planned to start of with defining what knowledge is and what facts are? Now, the reason I decided to talk about these two aok's is because I want to have a balanced argument as math on one hand is to a greater extent is facts ( pure mathematics would be my counter-claim) On the other hand art is so much more than just facts ( I have to decide my counter claim) Now, after thinking and going through some sites I thought of writing about mona lisa Imagine if knowledge was really about facts then the knowledge of mona lisa would be that it was painted b…

I'm grasping at straws atm, if for example you wanted to argue that reason is more valued than emotion for the cause to keep a tradition, how would you do so? There probably isn't a tangible measure, but is there a way to somehow tangibly support that reason is more valued or vice versa? Or is the only way to just present both woks involved and somehow argue one is more valued?

So I really wanted to do it on a knowledge issue that has to do with films. I was thinking mainly focusing it on the director Quentin Tarantino's films Inglorious Bastards and Django. But now thinking about it. It seems kinda hard. I was thinking "How do movies effect our way of perceiving/knowing history?" Then using his two films and dissecting them and bringing up points about that movies that are historical correct and parts that is actual 'Hollywood' cinema. Then later showing clips and bring in class involvement. But my main issue is, is this an actual knowledge issue

So here's the deal, my partner and I are doing a presentation, but we both agree it just doesn't feel that "TOK"ish, I guess the difficulty is developing the KQ/KI to identify assumptions in the diff perspectives + exploring the application/implications of the KQ So our KQ is something along the lines of: "What roles do emotion + reasoning play in determining whether a tradition is acceptable" and basically our "developed" or more specific KQs are something like "In what circumstances is emotion more valued than reasoning in determining whether a tradition is acceptable" + vice versa Is that on the right track? How do you exactly go about identifying assumptions + then so…

Hello! Our ToK presentations are due soon and I really need some help through this process (cue the sound of ominous music and hyperventilation). The thing is, my school is fairly new to the whole IB program (I am part of the "pilot program") and the teachers are trying to get familiarized with teaching their subjects. My ToK teacher, especially, is still trying to grasp the concept of ToK while teaching APLit/Comp so he hasn’t been much of help lately . We did mocks but those were not graded for unspecified reasons. Anyway, back to the presentation, I found two interesting RLS but I’m not sure of my knowledge issues or what to do next. • RL#1: http://abcnews…

Ok. I really need help. I'm a junior in IB. (standards for a Jr. Theory of Knowledge class). I need to understand how to deliver/create great presentations. Currently I need to present under the AOK of History. My knowledge issue/question (is there a difference between the two) is whether humans in general can learn from history. My Real Life Situation is appeasement by Chamberlain before WWII and current appeasement between the UN and Iran. How should I set this up? Claims, Counterclaims, etc. How long should it be? Should I spend more time on TOK implications/philosophies or rather the situation? To what extent? How many situations should I have and where should I incor…

Hello, So i am having trouble incorporating my AOK's into my TOK presentation. My knowledge issue is ''To what extent did perception affect the 2011 Egyptian revolution?'' and I have chosen human sciences and history as my AOK's. However, i don't know how you use them in the presentation. Do you talk about how you use the same methodology e.g. observation of human behaviour, to determine cultural factors such as the role of women? Or do you have to talk about the AOK, such as history, and how perception is used in this area, whilst somehow linking it to the Egyptian revolution? I know this isn't too clear, it's a bit difficult to articulate Thanks

Does it have to be recent? I want to talk about the life of Uday Hussein who was obviously born as the son of Saddam Hussein and therefore was extremely likely to become psychopathic like his father which he did. I know it has to be substantive, I think this issue is still substantive because it is just one example of how luck plays a huge role in how the course of our life is predetermined. Which effects everyone. so would this be ok?

Hey guys! I am doing a practice TOK presentation and my real life situation was that the USA said that they threw the atomic bomb at Japan with the excuse that it saved more harm than it did. SOOO my knowledge issue was: "To what extent is it justifiable to use violence to stop violence?" I've been told I need to make connections to AoKs, but my other examples: Vietnam War and anti-terrorist policies in Peru in the decade of the 90s only seem to fit social sciences or history. What I dont know is the way I need to relate them... How do I make these connections? What should I focus on? Thanks in advance

Hey everyone, I'm pretty confused as to how the TOK presentation should be structured. I know you start with a real life situation and draw a general knowledge issue from it, but from there, do you keep referring to the specific example, or do you approach it in a more general and universal sense? Do you also need to talk about additional real life situations? My teacher has never taught the subject before, so any clarification would be greatly appreciated!!
