I have almost a year of IB left but I have done nothing for my "creativity" part of CAS. Now you might say "but ToKisBull****, a year is more than enough time to do your CAS", wrong. I took 9 courses; HL Math, HL Physics, HL Biology, HL Chemistry*, HL Computer Science*, IT, English HL and French, Economics*. 9 ****ing courses. I've been studying like a ****tard for the past year and a scored a 7 on every subject (except the ****ing new-age bull****; TOK). And besides, I respect the 13th amendment and I do not want to be influenced more than I already am by a UN mind control program (RON PAUL 2016!!!). I'm a god when it comes to bull****ting. If TED TALKS had a segment o…

so you guys, before start judging me, for how I didn't do this earlier, I have a TOK essay due tomorrow, I have started writing it, but I am far away from finished, "Although sense perceptions may not be always reliable, they are the first step towards gaining knowledge. Discuss" this is what it should be about but it must as well have : 1- Including Real-life examples.2-Including your Personal perspective.3- Persuasive: Arguments (Including claims and counter-claims).4- Evidence: Sources and accurate referencing.5- Organization of ideas: (Over all structure: Introduction, Body paragraphs, conclusion). I really don't know how to start, though I have quite an idea o…

Hi Guys, I am looking at the SAT in my TOK presentation and I am struggling to put it under an AOK. It examines three skills, mathematics, reading and grammar. You could put the math section under the AOK math, but what about the other two? And what about the test holistically, could it go under an AOK? What do you guys think?

Soo I have a practice TOK presentation tomorrow, and I just want to know what you guys think of my Q. At first I liked it, but I'm starting to not like it as much. Real Life Situation: The exposing and embarrassing of promiscuous females on social networks for the amusement of others. Question: What makes people derive pleasure from the pain of others? What do you think?? Also, I really dont want to do a boring presentation using power point like everyone else, does anyone have any ideas on a unique way to do a presentation? Or the best presentation you've seen?

I am doing a presentation on how video games portray controversial themes like, women, violence, and immigration, etc. But I don't know where to go from there. What I have so for is some discussion on perception, language, reason, and emotion, in terms of video games. I was thinking of talking about how important context is to the portrayal of such themes. Should I going down that path or go some alternate route?

Hi, I have a practice TOK presentation coming up very soon. I don't have a Knowledge question as of yet. My real life situation will probably be something to do with the one child policy. I saw on this forum that ethics is an AOK to avoid for the presentation, but my teacher has not mentioned this once, and I was wondering whether this still applies to the new TOK curriculum. It seems to me that the new curriculum places a heavy emphasis on working around the real life issue, so I was wondering whether this means ethics is ok to approach now? Also if anyone has suggestion for the actual knowledge question that'd be great. Thanks

Hi guys! I'm writing my very first TOK essay, I have quite a few ideas and thoughts, but I'm having a really hard time forcing them into this PEE (point/evidence/explanation) stuff. I'm naturally good with words, I write a lot (NaNoWriMo yay!) and I have no problem putting together an argumentative and coherent essay, but PEE seems impossible. So, is writing using that method that for people who would otherwise struggle in writing essays or should I still try to use it? (This also applies to English, I guess, but I thought maybe rules are less strict in TOK essays.) Thank you!

So I've chosen title 2 -“There are only two ways in which humankind can produce knowledge: through passive observation or through active experiment.†To what extent do you agree with this statement? I'm having trouble finding examples. I know this focusses mostly on the natural and human sciences, but can someone help me with examples of these in the Arts - especially Literature? The examples from the Natural Sciences are going over my head. I'm thinking of Economics and Psychology for the Human sciences. Would really appreciate the help.

The article that i was given was about " can physics tell us everything there is to know about the universe" I need to refer to this article in my essay and i was just not able to make one knowledge claim that can actually relate to the article I want to start my claim by saying "to what extent does _____ plays a role in ______" kind of type. And ive actually tempted to write " to what extent does math plays a role in natural science" but this claim was too overwhelming and difficult. Can you guys give me some ideas ? I would really appreciate your guyss help

We may agree about the general standards in the arts but disagree as to whether a particular work has artistic merit. In ethics, the situation is reversed. We may disagree about ethical theories but we all know an unethical action when we see one. Discuss. How do we start a TOK essay? The relationship between arts and ethics. Thanks in advance.

I have my knowledge question, real life situation, and alternate questions but I'm finding it impossible to think of alternate real life situations that address and can be applied to my knowledge/alternate knowledge questions. ANY ideas would be much appreciated!! Real Life Situation: The shooting of Michael Brown by Officer Darren Wilson in August 2014. KQ: To what extent should intuition be impacted by reasoning? AKQ: To what extent is society impacted by the personal judgements of authority figures? How does sense perception impact one's ability to make reasonable decisions?

Hello! I´ve just been introduced to the ToK presentations, but my teacher is useless and he has not given me any actual explanation about what it consists of. I´m trying to think up a title/question for the presentation, but i´m confused about what it has to be about. Is it a problem? An issue? I´m also not sure how to structure it. Some sites that I visit say that I need to have two sides of an argument, whilst others just say to relate it to a real life situation. Fell free to include any other tips! Thank you so much!

I've been given 2 weeks (four classes) to prepare my TOK presentation, and I can't even choose a topic. Can you guys help me decide what would be a good topic for my presentation? These are the ones i've come up with so far. 1. Materialism: how do humans relate money to happiness. 2. Premarital sex 3. What is beauty? 4. Adoption? 5. Obesity and eating disorders. 6. How do we know whether we are acting in a “good†or “moral†way? 7. Stealing Thank you!

Hello everyone! So the knowledge question I've got is: To what extent can behavior and emotions be affected by different heard music genres? (This is a translation I made from Spanish (I will present it in this language):"¿En qué medida pueden ser las emociones y comportamientos afectados por los diferentes géneros de música escuchados?")) I am not sure if my question is adequate, also, I am a bit confused about what a good real life situation is. I've read that more personal RLS are more outstanding, but I don't know how to set it. My idea formy RLS is to tell how to me, hearing Pop or Jazz is much more pleasuring and mood boosting for me than other genres like rock …

Hey all! I was wondering if my TOK presentation topic sounds ok. I'm in a group of three and our question is: "How are different definitions of beauty formed, and what are the ethical implications of these definitions?" We plan to look primarily at language as a way of knowing, in terms of imagery, media, etc. For areas of knowledge, we want to look at multiple. For example, natural science in terms of what's healthy for your body, mathematics in facial symmetry and body measurements, human sciences with psychological disorders, indigenous knowledge systems with different cultural ideals of beauty, and history with changing beauty standards over the course of time…

Hi. I am currently working on my ToK presentation and because my teacher isn't quite as available to mail as i'd like her to be, I thought I might turn to you guys for help. I have established a KQ, and I think my AOK and WOK are quite okay. What do you think? To what extent can knowledge be prioritized over morality? And then, using Unit 731 as a RLE, I would create this KQ: To what extent can knowledge derived from natural sciences be of higher value than ethics? Alright. For this, my WOK would either be Emotion or Reason (Why not both?) Emotion: Our emotions influence our way of viewing ethics. Depending on what we may find ethical, our perspective …

Hey guys, Thank you so much for taking your time to read this thread. This is going to be my first TOK essay... and I am so lost. I have no experience in any philosophical/knowledge thinking. I have been taking TOK classes for around one month now (8 hours), but in terms of understanding the course and formulating knowledge questions, I haven't really understood anything. That aside, we were given the task of writing a 1,000 word essay due in 2 days. Originally we were given 5 days, but I only managed to finish all my homework today. We went on a TOK trip to 2 museums, and we have to include 1 example from each museum. "To what extent can technology help and h…

This is the RLS for my presentation (interesting, huh?), which is due in six days. I promise you that I'm not cramming at the last minute, but I still need help on coming up with possible "derivative/sub-knowledge questions". My ultimate KQ is how reasoning can endure in the face of culture and tradition. I've taken notes on both sides of the situation as well as my own, and separated each argument under "reasoning", "emotion/ethics", and "culture". I'm also painstakingly trying to not make this a debate about ethics, since I've heard that that's the quickest way to bomb any ToK assessment. Am I on the right track as far as taking notes and breaking stuff down is conce…

So I already have my TOK Presentation ready, which is based on the topic issue of 'Plastic Surgery', and I already have my knowledge issues, WoK's and AoK's.. etc. However, it seems like every person who presented their TOK presentation in my class made some interaction or made their presentation interactive, I have NO clue how to make a presentation interactive... I was going to go with the idea of "Can someone tell me what surgical procedures are the most common? Anyone?" but that would sound way too monotonous Please I really need ideas to make a TOK presentation on 'Plastic Surgery' interactive, I'm literally out of time

So I did my mock TOK presentation recently with the knowledge question "How do we know if love is real?", and the examiners said that the topic is too broad and suggested to narrow the topic. So far I've found a couple such as love according to different cultures, the existence of romantic love, etc but I'm still not very sure about it. I was wondering if you guys have any other ideas in mind. Thanks in advance!

The Michael Brown/Darren Wilson protests have completely inspired to me to change my ToK Presentation to focus on acts of police violence occuring due to stereotypes/racial prejudice/etc. There are many real life examples, and the rough knowledge question that I have right now is "To what extent should intuition impact the decisions of law enforcers?". I was thinking of branching out and adding examples of shooting dogs that were quickly determined viscious, etc. Thoughts? Is it too "social justice warrior"?

Currently, I am doing the TOK presentation. I already had the real life situation and now I am trying to develop a good, solid Knowledge Question. The topic that I am interested in is the government censorship. The real situation that I have now is about the censorship of media in China. Here's my question: Should I be specific in my Knowledge Question? For example, "is the government censorship in China justifiable" Or is it too specific? Or else would it be too broad if I don't mention any. Anyone can help? Please, it would mean a lot for me!

A friend and I have been trying to figure out a proper Real-life situation for our Theory of Knowledge Presentation and initially, we thought that using mere animal experimentation, but we also reflected on it and came to think that it is a bit general and perhaps overused. Trying to choose a more original and accurate situation, we came over and found that we could give a different focus on animal experimentation, ethics, and the way ethics can regulate and interact over knowledge acquisition in different areas of knowledge, so we thought that using the IB Psychology Ethical guidelines for the IA (which strictly ban the use of animals as testing subjects) could be a more…

Hi everyone, So we've just done our TOK presentations and are now onto starting our TOK essay's in preparation for the november 2014 exams this year (I'm in year 12 now, final year of IB in Australia). I've chosen this title for my TOK essay, as I believe it'll be the most easy to BS about 1. “Some areas of knowledge seek to describe the world, whereas others seek to transform it.” Explore this claim with reference to two areas of knowledge. So I'm thinking the most relevant areas of knowledge for this would be history (describing the world), mathematics and natural sciences, and in terms of transforming the world; ethics, human sciences, and the arts. I have my ToK presentation coming up soon and I am having difficulties in forming my KI. My RLS is about how some countries banned parents from naming their children certain names, and some children were even taken away by the government when their parents didn't conform to this law. Since names are a form of freedom of expression, is it ok if I use this as my KI: How does our freedom of expression affect other people? But is it ok if I still put it in my presentation as one …
