For my ToK presentation, I have come up with a fairly good issue relating to feminism and whether it is or ever has been important. But I'm still having problems coming up with a really good Knowledge Issue. Here are some ideas: To what extent to knowledge sources (such as the media) shape our appreciation and understanding of feminism? How is our understanding of feminism shaped by history? How does our understanding of history shape our perception of modern-day feminism? Please give any improvements or suggestions for new ones!! Any comments welcome

For my TOK presentation, I have decided to investigate 'untranslatable' words, i.e. non-english words that do not have any concise equivalent in English. An example is mamihlapinatapai (from the Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego), which means "that moment or feeling when two people both want to initiate something but neither wants to be the one to start it". Another interesting example is drachenfutter (German), which is used to refer specifically to a gift that a husband/boyfriend uses to placate an angry wife/girlfriend - as a sort of peace offering. I was wondering why certain experiences are so convenient to express in some languages and more troublesome in others,…

For a TOK knowledge issue, my partner and I have a real life situation regarding CCTV and security in schools. We have a research question/topic of: Is the presence of surveillance cameras in schools justified? We are currently discussing potential knowledge issues but need some input. Does anyone have any ideas for a potential general knowledge issue regarding technology and/or privacy?? Thanks

So I have to do my TOK presentation and I have no idea where to start. My teacher is rubbish at TOK and I am clueless as to how to touch the topic. I was thinking of taking a real life situation of a debate Wendy Wright and Richard Dawkins on Creationism vs. Evolution( obviously evolution wins, duh) and to extract a knowledge issue as follows: How does a belief in sth affect our reasoning? OR How does religious belief affect our reasoning? Which one of the two is better,if it is good at all? What tips would you give me?

Hey guys, I'm an amateur screenwriter. Currently, I'm trying to outline a murder mystery set at a very expensive private catholic school in Rome. I've got a character who needs to do a TOK oral presentation. However I, as a writer, need a topic for him to do. He's got an eye on going into politics after he graduates and he's native Italian. Any ideas?

Hi guys, i was thinking of doing my TOK presentation on the perception of beauty, but don't have a clear Knowledge issue or RLS in mind. What points could i talk about in the presentation? Do I have to take into consideration AOK as well as WOK? I can't really think of a AOK which would relate to my topic.. Is my topic good enough? Do you have any other suggestions? Any help/tips/advice is appreciated thanks!

The Theory of Knowledge course is soon to be updated to include Faith as a fifth Way of Knowing, I have heard. I think this may have been one of the May 2013 essay titles, but apparently the IB are including it (heard from a teacher at my school who is a ToK teacher and examiner, and my old philosophy teacher) I was wondering what others thought of it. In my opinion, it is a stupid idea. The whole point of Faith is that it is not Knowledge, but a blind belief and devotion towards something without actually having proof or certainty of it (eg God) whereas knowledge is meant to be defined as something known to be true based on evidence. How can faith be a Way of 'KNOWING' i…

Chem joke...) Ways of knowing and how they're related? History, language, (HELP!) Areas of knowledge Personal examples and stuff Help Help me Or I could start with a broader topic and get specific

So its been about a semester and I'm still not quite sure what a knowledge issue is... I've realized a lot of the TOK presentation topics start with "How" or "To what extent..." I wanted to do something on Arranged Marriages (it's relative to me because I'm Indian and some of my family members have their marriages arranged). The problem is I'm not sure HOW to make this into a knowledge issue... But if I were to write this as a knowledge issue is would be something like, "How can we know that arranged marriages are successful?" Something to do with Love Marriage vs Arranged Marriage...because there has been a debate about how arranged marriages can be successful, while man…

Hi guys, please can i have some help. I have chosen a real life situation, http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22455559. I came up with the idea of globalisation 'affecting' cultural individuality and i was going to focus on that, but it doesn't sound like a "Knowledge Issue" so i have gone back to the drawing board and found a issue about the definition of "culture" but that wont work because all i need is a dictionary. Please can people help me and give me ideas? I don't want to be told answers but i want to have some food for thought so it is actually me doing work on researching topic. Any help appreciated Tony

My TOK presentation is coming up soon, and I was wondering whether or not my KI is good enough for TOK standards or if it isn't related to knowledge enough. To what extent does communications and easy-access information via the Internet lead to the homogenization of culture? I have the impression it's too related to the real life situation and isn't directly relating knowledge. If that is the case, who would you suggest developing it? Thanks.

Hey guys I'm dying here My TOK Topic is due tomorrow and I am so insecure about my knowledge issue. This is my first time doing this TOK presentation, so I'm a newbie My real life issue is about the implementation of moral and national education into the Hong Kong curriculum, which is something greatly opposed in Hong Kong, since people think its a form of propaganda by China, while some people think that it is justified cos we need to know more about our country. So my proposed knowledge issue would be either 1. How justified is the implementation of Moral and national education? 2. How do we know if the moral and national education should be implemented in Hong Kong? W…

Hello, I'm having my real tok presentation next week and i'm working on the linkage between maths and art. I discuss about different methodologies to draw an art piece such as maths (goldent ratio/reason) used by Leonardo and emotion used by Picasso. My knowledge issue is: 'To what extent does Mathematics help to judge the beauty of an artpiece?". Does it sound alright? I feel like i need to fix the wording, I did this for my practice and my teacher said i missed the idea of 'implications in related areas' in criteria 4. Can you guys give my some ideas please? So my knowledge issue is "To what extent should public safety be prioritized over personal liberties?" and "Where is the line between protecting the society, and preserving civil liberties?" My original RLS was the 'civil rights infringements' on the Boston Bomber suspect, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, where the US law enforcement did not read him his Miranda rights, classifying him as an enemy combatant. The only problem is that they did end up reading him his rights, and theres certain errors in my conclusion of the RLS, so I want to change it. I have a few other RLS that I came up with additionally, such as: a) US gun control (specifically the 6 year old boy that was given a gun…

(if as individual, won't we have less time to explain all the different perspectives?) 2. my (maybe ex) group wanted to do about the rape cases, and the KI being to what extent does government policies protect the life and individuality of citizens?

Okay so I am doing my first TOK IA next week and I was just wondering what everyone thought about my knowledge issue?... Who are we to say if it is ethical for a person to take their own life? This stems from my real life situation of a man wanting to take his own life but his physical handicap did not allow him to do so, so he asked for help in his suicide from a doctor but all the courts said that he wasn't allowed to do that. my question is.. is this a good question to explore? and also, is it worded alright? so it's not too vague but it's not too specific? thank you!!

Hi all! I'm trying to prepare my ToK presentation, but I'm having problems with how it should all go. We never practiced extracting and dealing with KIs, so it's all kind of new to me. I narrowed all the options I thought of to two: Using this video as my real life situation: http://youtu.be/-KQb3Mx2WMw (KIs I extracted: To what extent do emotions overpower teenagers' reason in decision making? or to what extent can scientific knowledge give us an understanding of human nature?) Using teenagers' obsession with "Illuminati" and their alleged subliminal messages in popular music as my real life situation and exploring conspiracy theories; To what extent do sense perception…

Hi all! I'm in the process of planning my ToK presentation, my first thoughts were doing my presentation about defining beauty; it sounded original since we never discussed it in class. After research, it feels like it has been overused and I thought of changing my topic. I had the idea of what makes a hero, but I'm not sure how far I can go with that. I also tried extracting KIs from Doctor Who (A Christmas Carol, and The Doctor's Wife), but couldn't. Do you think I'm on the right track? Are any of the two topics accurate, if so which should I use? Thank you!

We're about to do our first practice presentation in TOK, and I came up with this example and wanted to hear your opinions on it. Is it relevant enough? Specific enough? Spending most of yesterday, I have found various articles and have chosen one, have created discussion questions as well, but I am not too sure if it covers mathematics, or contains other areas of knowledge as well. I am doing my real life situation on: Bullying towards a kid named Jamey leading to his suicide. Then my knowledge issue is going to be: To what extent are we responsible for how our actions affect others? I will define responsible, and then move on to AoK like human sciences, ethics, and history. (or if they are any better ones please tell me) BUT I am lost on what to do after this, I am having a hard time finding topics under each AoK. Can anyone help me? I am just confused overall how to do it. I've looked under many YouTube videos and they don't help much either.

For my ToK presentation, I have decided to explore the question above ^^^ My real life situation will most likely be a court case since there are other ways of knowing involved: Reason: via evidence, answer from witness Language: how lawyers aim to persuade (yet this evokes emotion) Perception: as the jury is made up of different people with different personalities However, I'm not sure whether this would be TOO FOCUSED on my real life situation instead of the question itself & I'm not quite sure how to best present my idea & structure my presentation... && are there any situations where emotions do NOT have a role in helping us make decisions?

OK so I have been thinking about what to do for my presentation and I thought since I like to watch a lot of Asian dramas I might be able to do something with it. Like, I noticed that many of the dramas portrayed women as weaker and less than the men and the women can never make a decision and are always crying and basically the damsel in distress. The men are always portrayed as the better, stronger and controlling. So, I have been trying to think of a question or topic that I can connect this to. Please help! Thanks

Hi, My TOK presentation is coming up soon and I still need a topic. Our TOK teacher taught a lot of metaphysics this year (do we exist? what is real?) Since I like doing magic tricks, I want to try do a presentation related to magic tricks. All I can think of right now is showing the class a card, saying that they know what the card is (through sense perception), and transforming the card into another card. However, I don't have a knowledge issue yet. Knowledge issues have to be worded like "How do we know ________?", right? Can someone give me some ideas for a possible knowledge issue?
