Is "something" awkward in a thesis?

I'm writing an commentary and I was wondering if using the word "something" sounds awkward.

Example : " The author suggests that doing something to please others...."

While not awkward per say, it probably can be worded better. Try something more along the lines of "The author suggests that taking actions to please others" or even "The author suggests that pleasing others" would be more explicit, and sound better.

The word "something" may not be specific enough - try to be more specific with your thesis, or if you cannot, try to reword it. Your language criterion may drop if you use the word "something" as well.
