Hello! My Biology HL class was all shocked today when we asked our Biology teacher how many sources we needed to reference in our IA. Her answer was 20!!!! Is this true? The majority of our class has used 4 - 10 and so... we're a bit concerned as our first draft is due on the 15th.

Hi I wanted to my Bio IA on enzymes, specifically the effect of temperature. I was wondering whether it's not too easy. My teacher in general doesn't give much feedback and doesn't criticise topics. Provided that I have enough replicates and groups and everything is well planned, do you think it's possible to score well?

Hi guys ^^ I was wondering which topics were more interesting for my biology extended essay, the one that would be more common or least interesting would be my internal assessment instead. Also, please give me your opinions on both of these topics, I would love it if there are any changes to improve on my lab research By the way, both of these topics are accepted by my biology teacher so I hope it would be alrightish too, please tell me your thoughts on it ^^ Lately, for my Internal Assessment I thought of a topic about dissecting animal's heart in relation to the topic of Animal Physiology. There may be ethical issues but I discussed with teacher about the fact that t…

I'm not confident I understand the possibilities of the Bio IA. Labs are not my strong suit, so I'm interested in doing a data based report. Am I correct in thinking this does not require hands on experimentation? Do you form a research question/hypothesis as normal and find the answer in comparing data? My teacher has been little help as it's his first year as in IB teacher. Also, we will have two hours of class time before a six hour stint in a university lab, followed by another two hours of class time. Would this change the possibilities of a data based assessment? Thank you

I have a new HL Biology teacher who has never taught IB before and isn't quite helpful. I'm trying to find a good topic to create a research question from and I originally came up with: What is the affect of different sugars in solutions of the same concentration on the diffusion of water? but my teacher says I need to find an application to the real world or something like a purpose of sorts. I haven't been able to find one. Any ideas? I'm most likely going to abandon this question if I can't find an application soon because the rough draft is due in two weeks. As I have been trying to find other topics to create an experiment from, I find that I don't know what makes …

Hey guys! So the bio department in my school is basically a joke and I'm taking HL. My exams are in 2016 may and we haven't started the bio hl syllabus. You can see the predicament I'm in, I'd really appreciate some study tips. Any previous bio HL students that managed to get good? What do you recommend me to do to get that 7? I look forward to hearing your input!

Hello! I was planning on doing my IA on the fermentation of yeast in different sugar solutions. I was originally going to approach this by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide released during anaerobic respiration. I was really excited for this lab but now that I've done a lot of research I've noticed it's been completed endless times! I don't want to do a practical that's been done countless of times... Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to switch this up and make it my own rather than a replica of others? I was thinking of using the following sugars: glucose, sucrose, starch, fructose, and galactose (but I would be up for changing any of them up).…

Hi, My class needs to start picking IA topics REALLY soon (like in a few days). I have an idea but I'm not sure if it would work. I wanted to see the effect of salinity on the germination of seeds. I need 10 trials with 5 increments, but I only have two weeks (10 days to collect data). Would this be sufficient time? Thank you!

Working with lipase and milk for my lab report. If I reconstitute 100g of powdered milk containing 20g of fat in 100 ml of water will it give me milk that has 20% fat content? Likewise will this hold good 75g powder in 100 ml water = 15% fat content 50g powder in 100 ml water = 10% fat content 25g powder in 100 ml water = 5% fat content

Hey guys, So I did my experiment on how plants grown different light intensities affect chlorophyll concentration. This would require me to go into detail about the process of chlorophyll synthesis, which isn't in the syllabus. I researched about it and it seems fairly complex. Is there anything else I can talk about keeping the same experiment? Does anyone have any insights regarding this situation? Please help ASAP, thanks!

Hey guys, My Bio IA involves seed germination. The independent variable is intensity of light. My teacher suggested I put one container (5 seeds) near a window, one far from a window, one in a dark box, one in shade. However, won't the light intensity be too variable? It doesn't remain constant throughout the day. Instead of this, if I were to put them in boxes with a single lamp as a light source, say for 6 hours a day, will there be too much heat in the box? Which one would be better? Please respond ASAP as all experiments need to be completed by the end of this month. Thanks!

hey! im about to start my extended essay, and I'm supposed to give my research question in by tomorrow but i am still alowed to change it. My research question right now is what kind of plants grow in the stampled areas of the forest vs non stampled areas and is there any correlation to the plants that grow (if two plants always grow together etc) I really do not think this is sufficient enough for an extended essay and i want to change it as it already does not seem appealing to me. i want to do something involving humans. ive thought of research questions such as, the effect of different hours of sleep has on the body, how does body mass effect the performance in ex…

Hey guys! So basically, I did my bio IA on different sugars affecting yeast respiration. My IA showed that glucose produced more c02 than sucrose did, however, my teacher told me that sucrose is supposed to produce more. I looked up online, literally half of the studies show that glucose produces more and the other half show that sucrose produce more. Heres what I think: Glucose will probably produce more C02 quicker than sucrose as it is a monosaccharide whereas glucose is a disaccharide. However, in the long run, since sucrose will yield twice the amount of glucose ( as it is made up of glucose + fructose ) sucrose will evolve more c02. My experiment lasts only 2…

Hey guys! I'm planning to do my Biology IA on how different wavelengths of light affect the rate of photosynthesis. My RQ would be: How do different wavelengths of light affect the rate of photosynthesis in Cabomba Carolinesis? I'd use red, green, blue, and orange. I have 2 questions: 1. Is this IA idea too simple? Is there anything that can lend an element of complexity to it? 2. For the controlled, should I use white or yellow light? Please respond ASAP as my previous experiments have failed and I'm starting to panic!

Hi! So I'm a little confused about the whole IA thing. My teacher hasn't really explained it at all yet because we haven't started our IAs. But I'm so impatient that I can't stop thinking about possible topics. We have looked at several IAs in class though, and most of them were experiment-based. And there was only one (the tuberculosis correlation IA) that was a database IA. The thing is, I think it would be more convenient for me to do a database IA, but I'm not exactly sure what's required from them. Could someone please tell me some basic information about what is and isn't a good topic like? Because I just can't figure that out for some reason. The current topic …

Why do some sources show: NAD+ + 2H+ + 2e- >>> NADH + H+ While others show NAD+ + H+ + 2e- >>> NADH? I understand the H+ formed in the first one probably contributes to the proton gradient so either way the NADH molecule is the same, but why do some equations involve 2H+? Also, what do the equations for FAD+ and NADP+ look like (did I write NADP correctly?) I guess the real question is how many electrons each of these carry, but I'm curious to know the equation

Hi people! I'm currently setting up my Bio SL IA, I wanted to work with red wiggler worms and see how food affects the population growth. I had already an idea of what I was going to do, but I was planning it would take around 1 -2 months. My teacher says that she is not sure if my experimental work can surpass 10 hrs, as the guide says that's the time we have to work on it. So probably, I'll have to change it. What do you guys know about that? Could it happen? Or can I stay? Thanks!!

So I've been wanting to do a data analysis for my Biology IA since I'm terrible at conducting labs. However, my teacher has - not surprisingly - not been of much help and keep insisting that I do a lab since no one has ever done a data analysis Bio IA at my school. The weird thing about this is that she explicitly told the entire class that she wished that someone would do one this year so that she would not have to set up lab time for every single student. Because of this I have actually no clue of what I could possibly do, since she won't provide me with any examples of topics (like the ones for the lab experiments), nor any good websites apart from gapminder. Can a…

Hey guys, My Bio IA is testing the effect of different concentrations of copper sulfate and lead nitrate on the rate of photosynthesis in an aquatic plant. I've tried with concentrations of 0.1%, 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7%, 0.9%. However, at these concentrations, there was no photosynthesis. My teacher suggested the concentrations are too high for an aquatic plant to survive in. My question is: What concentrations would be appropriate so there's a difference in the rate of photosynthesis, without making photosynthesis inhibitory? Looking forward to your replies, really need help!

Ribosomes have rRNA right...so there's no alpha or beta sheet structures to be indentified right? My bio teacher is pretty confused so we doubt her a lot. The was pointing at a picture and trying to name beta sheets and alpha helices... those only apply to protein right (if there are proteins in ribosomes then nevermind, but I'm sure that's not what she was referrring to. SHe meant alpha/beta RNA structures)

Here's to the first of many forums I'll start on this website We have an ESS IA due in ten days and it has to be a report based on surveys we conducted on an environmental issue. I was thinking of surveying peoples opinion on petrol and the rise of the petrol price in the Middle East. I would compare the results based on race. I'm pretty sure Europeans/Westerners would show more awarness about the affect of petrol on the environment and would agree with the price increase and a potential tax imposed. Any thoughts on what I should do? What could I improve? Thanks in advance.

I'm currently doing Bio SL but I'm not enjoying the subject. I want to change to ESS SL.
