Hello everyone! So for my biology IA I intend on investigating the effect of cigarette smoke on plant growth. I will be exposing plants to filtered/unfiltered cigarettes over prolonged periods of time and periodically measuring their growth. What do you think of this idea? Will it be successful and good at getting me a high mark? I have back up ideas which are investigating the effect of acid rain on plants (using vinegar to lower pH of water of plants), or effect of overpopulation on plant growth (by planting a lot of seeds in a certain area). Thank you for your feedback

Hi guys, So I was just wondering if anyone might have some useful tips when approaching the data response questions? The data response questions ALWAYS pull my average down as I was bound to get at least one question wrong... I know that the 'best' way to tackle data analysis questions is simply to do loads of them for practice, but might there be more time-efficient ways? Thank youuuu

My biology internal assessment is on "The effect of different hydrogen peroxide concentrations of different types of yeast catalase" As hydrogen peroxide concentration increases, the rate of reaction of yeast catalase will increase. However, eventually yeast catalase will become saturated, as it has reached its maximum rate possible. This means that increasing the substrate concentration will no longer effect the rate of enzyme activity. In this case, the rate of enzyme activity will stop, and it might eventually decrease. ^ That is my hypothesis for it. And for those who have had previous experiences with the biology IA, can you please tell me whether my hypothesis…

Hey guys, my teacher is expecting us to find a topic for our IAs. My idea is to investigate osmosis rate of Eggshell membrane. Basically, I will put a raw egg into vinegar so the egg shell itself will dissolve and then put the raw egg into sucrose solutions with different concentrations. I talked to my teacher today (he's pretty strict and expects a lot) and he said that my idea basically sucks because I can't calculate the osmotic pressure and the osmosis rate will also be hard to measure. My other idea is using Edolea plants and investigate their rate photosynthesis and changing factors like light intensity or different colours of light. When I told my teacher howev…

Like if someone did an experiment on something, would I be allowed to use that topic but do my own experiment? (Biology HL)

Ok so the question might sound quite confusing but I'll explain. I get somewhat worried when I am studying a concept in biology from textbook, and the wording of that concept from the textbook will not match up too well with the mark scheme for a particular question. It's never actually happened to me yet in an internal school exam because we have access to questionbank and I normally study using those markschemes, but I often see situations where if I didn't have the access to the mark schemes, and I learnt a concept entirely from a textbook, that I would end up getting maybe 6/8 for a particular question, even if what I wrote was word-for-word from the textbook. …

Hey fellow bio students, Does anyone know if we need to be able to draw the eye and ear for option E on paper 3? On bioninja it says that we only need to label, but have looked at some past paper 3s that were perhaps 4-5 years old that asked you draw them. http://www.ib.bioninja.com.au/options/option-e-neurobiology-and-2/e2-perception-of-stimuli.html Thank you

I am currently in the middle of my revision for Biology HL, and am struggling with Paper 3. My school taught Option G and Option H. However, Option H is very tough one and I am having big troubles learning and understanding it. My Questions: If Option H should be to much/difficult, would I be allowed to study another Option, that I am generally more interested and better in? Will all Options be available in the exam? Or will I only get the ones, my school taught in the class (Did the school sign me up for specific options?) Thanks

But I've never come across something called "Uncertainties". What do they want me to do? I've googled it and I haven't found anything useful Thanks in advance MajorProcrastinator

for students that have already taken the IB BIo exams, were there any special exam procedures you had to do? Did you have to fill out special things in your tests? My teacher says that he is going to go through what we have to do on the day of the exam, like special things we have to fill out on the test sheets and what not, and I am wondering if there really is special things we need to do, or can we just simply turn up and write our exams? I'm asking because if there is no special procedure, I would rather spend my time studying at home than going to school thanks!

Hi, I have a really urgent question about HL biology (because exams are in a week). I'm in Bio HL, and my teacher told us that we will be tested on every single unit in the entire textbook on the exam. If this is some kind of like motivational thing to get us to study, it's fine. But honestly he walked in today and told us that we haven't done like 5 of the units because our optional units were D and E and apparently we were supposed to have done A-C as well as the D and E (because we're HL and we have to do all the mandatory SL units too???) I've googled this and nothing has shown anything totally solid. Like I love bio and I don't mind really the entire textbook,…

So, my teacher hasn't been very helpful these past years. Maybe Wednesday last, he tells us that we will have to self-teach option F. We haven't covered much of anything in that option, and I find it difficult because of so much memorization. Do you all think it would be better for me to self-teach an option we know more of (evolution), or just stick to what he says we should do? Either way, I don't think I'll be anywhere near prepared enough, so I'd like to know which seems to be easier to you all. Thanks!

Hey all! I have a question on scale calculations for scientific diagrams. In my classroom, we used a calibrated reticule to measure a cell length, lets say a value of 1.234mm If my diagram length was 12.34cm, what precision do I use? Scale for the assignment is to be shown as size of diagram:size of object in cm : micrometers In this example the final scale value as 1.00cm= 10.00 micrometers after calculating scale: (1.234mm) / ( 123.40mm) = 0.01000mm x 1000 = 10.00 micrometers ->> 10.00 micrometers follows sig figs, however, is not the measured precision of the reticule at 0.001mm. So my question is, are these precisions of decimal places correct? And d…

What happens if we do? Do we get marks deducted or do they just mark the first two? My teacher tells me they mark them all and then use the two best scores as my Section B grade. I doubt they would even bother marking more than two considering they have more than just one paper to mark.

My school did option E and H. I'm okay with E but H is a huge struggle for me. I could get a 3 instead of 4 or 5 just because of it. I'd like to ask if it possible for us to choose to do other option that we didn't cover in class? Would that be a problem if i choose to do so and self-study that option?

So I have my bio IA topic figured out and I want to do it on the correlation between the number of melanoma cases in European countries and the distribution of blue-eyed people for each of the countries I'm looking at. I found a database for the number of melanoma cases and I'm doing this because I read an interesting article that suggested that there was a possible link between eye pigmentation and the risk of developing melanoma. Problem is: I can't seem to find a credible database that has stats on things like the distribution of eye colour. Anyone here know of any good, free databases that have that? Thanks!

Exactly the title. Guess here's when wikipedia f**ks up...on their Cyclin A page it says "degradation of Cyclin A/CDK1 induces mitotic exit" while on the Cyclin B page it says "in order for the cell to progress out of mitosis, degradation of cyclin B is necessary" And it says B/CDK1 replaces A/CDK1 so I doubt they both degrade at the same time

Hello all! I'm currently a junior and have my remaining classes planned out. But due to a packed schedule and my desire to take an additional science class during senior year (which is optional in my school), I've opted to take Biology at the higher level instead of having to take an IB elective course. The bio teacher in my school in certified to teach SL, but does he need a separate certification in order to teach HL? Have any of you chosen this route instead of taking an IB elective? Apologies if this topic was posted in the wrong forum!

Nature tends towards disorder... but are IB markers aware of that fact? Nah seriously. My random error is actually really small but my equipment error reaches the 35% & it is because the pH meters were incredible ****ty & they fluctuated a LOT. Can I just point it out as a limitation or there is no way I can present an experiment with that biiiig error? Thank you

My first draft is due sunday(where I live, the school week starts sunday) So basically heres the deal, I found my experiment online. I used the same methodology, materials, and everything. To personalize the experiment, I did change a few things in the experiment(like using different types of yeast, instead of one type of yeast as stated in the experiment i found) and using different concentrations of the independent variable(which is hydrogen peroxide) compared to the ones stated. I did mention that in my 'personal engagement' section of the I.A. (Or I guess it used to be called 'background information' before this year) Is that good enough??????? Or can this pose a pr…

Hi, I have run into somewhat of a problem. We are supposed to hand in all ESS reports and fill out a form called PSOW where we list all experiments conducted and list the hours spent on each experiment. This has to add up to 42 hours it seems like. Me, being somewhat of a procrastinator, and having an ESS teacher that's not very aware of how everything in the IB works, I need help from someone here. I have not done all of these reports, and I will not be able to finish them within the deadline set by the teacher to hand in the form. What does this mean? Will I fail the course? I am getting 5's in ESS mocks, if that is relevant at all. Also, I am pretty behind in the biol…

I've recently started studying for my Biology exam in May (I know, late to the party) and I would like some help on which resource it would be best to use. As I don't have a lot of time, since I also have to study for my other exams, I decided on using either BioNinja or IB Guides, instead of the book, as the information is a lot more to the point in these two. The question is, which one of the two would if be best to use? I've found that the two guides are sometimes contradicting as to what you should know to answer the question right. I'm currently studying Prokaryotic & Eukaryotic cells and, as you can see, the information that they give is quite different, espec…
