Hello I'm starting to plan my HL biology IA and I was wondering if it was a good idea to use a simulation for my IA. In case I decide to use data base I have the same questions for it. Are the chances of getting a high mark lower for any of those options ?

Hi there, I would like to to do something on osmosis for my IA. Earlier this year we have already carried out an osmosis experiment involving strips of potatoes in class. If I want to do osmosis for my IA, I will need to make variations to it and make it more personal. Do any of you know what I could use instead of the potato and how to make the experiment different in general? Thanks guys.

I just realized how messed up my graph looks!??! my II is due tomorrow and im freaking out. HERE IS WHATS GOING ON: RQ: HOW TEMPERATURE AFFECTS REACITON TIME USED 10 PARTICIPANTS with temperautre on the left column as the X AXIS and their average reaction times for each temperature I dont get how to graph this?? (I ATTACHED A PHOTO) Temperature should be on the x axis the reaction times on the Y axis and each participant having on line of data but it doesn't look like that at all? how do i graph it ike that?

I'm in my second year of IB and am currently getting straight 5's in bio. I don't even know what happened but last year I got one 4 and the rest were straight 6's. Even though I study, I simply just don't know whats going on. My predicted grade is really affected by this. I don't know what to do and my teacher is no help.

Hi guys. I really need help in my Biology IA. This is my first time doing an IA. I'm taking Bio HL. I'm doing egg osmosis. I know there are many experiments on that. I was thinking how does solute concentration affect the rate of osmosis in eggs. Is this a good IA topic? Should I think of other factors that can affect osmosis? Also can you guys tell me what do you think about Bio HL if you are taking it? I am struggling in that class. I don't have the greatest teacher. I wish I could get out of that class. Hope you guys have a great day!

Hey guys, I thought of this question for my bio IA, but I did not get a very good response from my teacher, so I was wondering if I could get a heads up of whether this is a good topic. My question is: To what extent is a low pH necessary for the activation of pepsin?

Hello! I´ve been thinking about my Bio IA and I had an idea but now I have to change it. I´ve come up with something but to be honest I´m not sure if my topic is good enough for Bio SL, so I´d appreciate if any of you could give me your opinion. My topic: I would measure the sweat rate per hour of 3 men and 3 women practicing 3 different sports. Some studies have showed that men tend to have a bigger sweat rate than women so my experiment would try to support that hypothesis. I feel like the experiment is too easy, and apart from doing some calculations to get the sweat rate and plotting my results I don´t think I´m doing a really deep analysis. May…

Hi, is there a specific structure/layout to be followed when writing the a HL biology IA. My teacher says to put the titles as they are marked (like Personal engagement, exploration, evaluation) but i feel that this is not the correct or general way to do it. and would they mark you down for structuring it that way, as it takes away from the general structure of a lab report. thanks in advance.

Hi, I am a hl biology student and my teacher recommended me to do my IA on the growth of bacteria in different media. However, he has left now and I am not too sure if this is an ethical topic. Should I continue with this or are there any other topics related to plants that I can choose?

I'm in Year 11 right now doing MYP and I need to make subject selections for DP soon. For my science subject I'm not interested in Chem or Physics, so it's between Bio or ESS for me. I need to get a really high score in IB (43+) to get into the degree I want, so I need opinions on whether Bio or ESS is generally easier? Could you guys tell me a bit about the courses? Thank you

Hello people, So I started the IB this September and I chose Physics SL as a science. I want to go into social science, so I just chose the experimental one that I disliked the least. I'm actually a good physics student, but I hate my teacher and I don't think I can handle his classes for much longer. So, I've been thinking about moving to Bio SL/ ESS because the teachers are amazing and they might make me like the subjects (that happened with math - in the 9th grade I hated it, but then I got a good teacher and am now doing HL ) What do I do? Is SL Bio easy? Is ESS too easy (I heard it was kind of made fun of and frowned upon by universities)? …

I'm doing how temperature affects reaction time and I don't know which stats test to use (I DONT KNOW WHAT TO COMPARE) Since every reaction time is different, I converted my data to the change in percentage (current reaction time to reaction time in normal temp), but i'm not sure what to compare because i can't compare (16% to 0%) ??? I'm currently trying to do the original numbers e.g 293 milliseconds in 25oC compared to 400 mlliseconds in 40 oC. IDK WHAT I'M DOING SOMEONE HELP

I'm doing that now, but I have time to change??? (Because everyones reaction time starts at a different time??) ALSO, WHICH STATS TEST DO I USE??? DO I COMPARE EVERYTHING TO THE NORMAL TEMP TIME USING THE T TEST?? HELP OMFG

Hi, I'm having a huge biology test on Thursday on the two topics mentioned in the title. It's my first biology test and since I don't have normal lessons (my school didn't fit the lessons to my plan; I face two hours with the class, one done 'individually' one on one with another teacher) I'm not that good. Do you guys have any tips? I got the textbook and those topics (Cell and Molecular Biology) are 140 pages long and i don't know if it is manageable to learn it all. I will very much appreciate help

Hi, I want to make my biology ia on the effects of tobacco smoke on the environment, but as I´ve been researching i´ve found that nicotine is actually helpful for the plants growth, and some of them (such as peppermint, eggplant and tomatoes) contain this substance, which they absorb without any negative effects. What i´m trying to prove is that secondhand smoke is harmful for the environment as it is for humans. I´m afraid there´s also lots of research done on this, so i really need to make something very original if i want to show my compromise on the assignment. Would it be a good idea to add as a variable the concentration of smoke to analyze how much of it …

Hello, I have to do my Biology IA and its in HL. I have some topics in mind for my IA but I dont know if it is fine to do them in Biology HL or if they are too simple. I would like to do something that has to do with plants' growth and the relationship between plants' growth and light. Another thing that I had in mind is also seed germination. I would really appreciate other topic recommendations and clarifaction if the tooics that I chose are too simple for Biology HL IA. Thanks in advance, Youssef Jumaa.

Hello! I'm really sorry if I'm posting this wrong, but I am new to this website and desperately need help. My IB ESS SL teacher told us our IAs are due in 2 weeks and I have NO CLUE what I'm doing. She only met us with 1 time in September and all of us are super lost. She gave us some rubric and requirements papers and I'm very confused. In class, she told me that your IA can be an experiment where you yourself collect data, or it could be a research paper where you use data from somewhere else and analyze it. But when I looked at the grading rubric, it said you have to include a whole section on methods. I was going to do my IA on how countries with l…

Hi fellow IB students, I reaallyyy need you help!! I was told today that my BIO IA is too easy to be an IB IA. My project is on weather different concentration of soap better eliminate or kill bacteria found on our hands. However since that study has been done before I would have to add another factor... I am doing my Biology IA on the effect of using your dominant and non-dominant hand on reaction times as a response to visual stimuli. If any of you has some spare time, could you do a very quick reaction time test, which will take maximum five minutes, to provide me with some more data? Every test consists of five reaction times. Once you do it, could you please post them for each hand for me? This will mean 10 times in total, 5 for each hand. There is no need for the averages. Just remem…

Hey guys, so a few weeks ago I came up with the topic for my Biology SL IA: "the effect of salinity on the amount of oxygen produced by photosynthesis of elodea", but I don't know if it is an acceptable topic, given that one of the prescribed labs was about photosynthesis. In it, we didn't use salinity as a factor, only light and CO2, but I'm not sure if I should do something that is not related to photosynthesis at all, or if my topic is alright given that we didn't try that factor in the prescribed lab. Also, spanish is my first language so I'm writing my IA in spanish, but while looking for information in english I found two prezis from 5 or 6 years ago by IB stud…

Hi! I am currently in the midst of writing the first draft for my biology IA, but due to the fact that I am making a study on the inheritance of pied mutations in budgerigars, i.e. not working in a laboratory, I am struggling to structure my IA.
