So i'm about to begin Grade 11 of high school, in other words my first year of IB. After going through a number of posts about Study Guides, etc. it really left me confused on the topic of: should I be buying these study guides for Chem and Bio now or in my senior year? It is my goal to achieve 6 and 7's however I am unsure of whether these Bio and Chem study guides would serve any purpose or use to me at this time. I am very new to the IB world and if someone could kindly help me out, or link me to a post where something like this is already talked about it would be much appreciated ! If there are any questions about my current situation I will gladly answer them…

Are two people in the same batch allowed to have the same IA? Me and my friend didn't know it but we ended up doing the same thing. We did it in different ways, but we were researching the same IV and DV. How should we proceed? Who gets the IA?

Im in currently in a distressing situation as my previous IA experiment failed on me halfway and now I desperately need new IA topic. I came up with the following: How does the length of a carbohydrate affect respiration in yeast? Basically I would take different types of sugars eg. glucose, fructose, maltose, sucrose etc. And use them as a source for yeast to respire with. I would then calculate the amount of carbon dioxide buildup Dependant: Volume of carbon dioxide released Independent : Type of sugar corresponding to carbohydrate chain. eg. glucose for monosaccharide, sucrose for disaccharide Questions: - Is this too simple an IA? Because essentially, I eith…

I'm planning of doing my IA on different concentrations of 2 heavy metals, lead nitrate and copper sulfate on the rate of photosynthesis. This makes it 2 independent variables. This is my proposed RQ: How do different concentrations of lead nitrate affect the rate of photosynthesis in Cabomba Caroliniana, as measured by the number of bubbles, over the duration of one minute, compare to different concentrations of copper sulfate? All suggestions welcome, thanks!

Is it fair that my teacher has marked me down from a complete to a partial for not stating the RANGE of my Independent Variables, in my research question? I stated the range of the IV's straight after in an "Information Section" but not directly in the RQ. I stated what my DV and IV's were, but not the specific range. e.g. Concentration of HCl (0.1, 0.2, 0.3) etc.... Is it fair that I got 1/2 instead of 2/2

Hello everyone! As you read in the title, I am not sure which science to pick... I am not going to do anything related to science in uni, but as you know one science must be taken. My Subjects are: Maths HL, Econ HL, and etc. 1) which one to choose? 2) do you really have to study by heart all the definitions and human body related cells etc.? (I am not that good in memorising all the things) 3) is it simple to have an easy 6 or 7 in ess? Thank you for answering me

My current RQ is: How does light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis as measured by number of bubbles produced by *name of aquatic plant* in conducive environment over a duration of one minute, and how does it compare to the rate of photosynthesis in a polluted environment? My teacher said I need to make it slightly shorter, how do I do this while still including 2 independent variables and the dependent variable in the RQ? All help appreciated, thanks!

I'm thinking of doing my IA on the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis in an aquatic plant. I'm planning on doing 5 different light intensities and using 2 types of surroundings, one in a normal environment, and one in an environment with cigarette smoke. This makes it 2 independent variables, light intensity and condition of environment. Am I allowed to design an experiment for my IA with 2 independent variables? Any input appreciated, thanks.

So I'm currently planning on doing an experiment that uses an aquatic plant, measuring the rate of photosynthesis with different light intensities. Dependent Variable: Number of bubbles produced (rate of photosynthesis) Independent Variable: Light intensities Is this too simple for me to score a high grade? All suggestions/improvements welcome!

Ok, I'm taking ib environmental system instead of the other science classes...and many people in our school view it as a joke. So do universities view environmental system as an easy course or what.

My IA is to investigate the effect of different leaf extracts on the germination and growth of seedlings Currently, I got two different kinds of extracts. Two different kinds of seeds I covered 8 petri dishes with cotton and placed six seeds of one kind in them. I then poured over the two leaf extracts on 4 petri dishes each. I did this for both seeds. Is this enough for data? Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi everyone! On the Biology guide, it stipulates that the IA must be 6-12 pages long. However, I'm not sure if that means that it's 6-12 sides of A4 long, or 6-12 pages, meaning there would be 12-24 sides of A4? Thank you!

So for my biology IA I will be doing something about germination ( independent variable - temperature ) and I just realized one of my classmate is doing her EE on germination as well ( independent variable - light wavelengths. ). In that case, can I still do the topic ?

Hi, So my BIO IA topic is ''How does light intensity affect the germination and growth of bean seeds?'' So the plan is to plant the seeds at 5 different light intensities (5 examples for each light intensity) and then analyse the results. My main concern is how I will go about regulating the light intensity. What do you guys think? What can I use? Grateful for replies!

If I use the product "pH Up and Down" 1 in my EE to change the pH of water, will this be viewed negatively by IB graders? Hello, I know it's maybe a little bit early, but I want to ensure that I have the past papers (Biology SL), when I want to start studying for the final exam. Unfortunately not every school has enough past papers, which the students could learn from... I would be pleased if anyone has past papers from the last ten years (2005-2015). I don't think that the curriculum changed much, moreover I could also skip a question if I realize that it's not in our curriculum. So if you have a link of a website or if you have them as soft copies, I would be glad if you could send them under this topic. I'm sure many students will benefit from this:) (I'm not a native speaker, so p…

Hi everyone! I was wondering if statistical analysis is necessary to score highly/get full marks in the Analysis criterion? I'm having a hard time trying to find an appropriate statistical test, or if it's even necessary or able to apply one. I'm aiming to find out which honey (out of 4 different types) have the highest efficacy as a bactericide, measured using the zone of inhibition. I know this is incredibly vague, but any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

HI guys, for my statistical analysis, I will be using the t-test. However, I am not sure if I should use the t-test equation to find the critical t value: or, use this online t-test calculator. The online t-test calculator would make things easier, and would also save word space, as I could just reference the calculator. But I am afraid that I will not get points for my understanding and the holistic judgement mark, since I just used a third-party resource. What do you guys think? Currently I am writing it down with the equations and comparing it to the t distribution table, but explaining this method might take up valuable word space, rather than a report from t…

The research question : How does the light intensity affect the rate of photosynthesis ? Procedure : I am going to use leaf(money plant) discs, and remove all the air bubbles using a syringe, thus it will sink when put in any solution. Place them in the solution of bicarbonate in distilled water. Take different samples of these and place them with a distance of 30cm, 40cm, 50cm, 60cm and 70cm from a single light source one by one. And note down the time taken by all the 10 discs in the solution in one beaker to rise. Problem : I was ready with the set-up for the experiment. Hi! I've been having trouble coming up with a good biology IA topic. At first I thought I'd try to make an experiment to see how long it takes for cats to form a habit, but I only have five cats to use in the experiment and I'm not even sure if I could get any data so I decided to scrap that idea. Then I read about there being a possible link between eye colour and different personality traits and figured I could make a survey to test if there really is any correlation. Do you think that would be suitable for a bio IA? Or is it too simple? My class is the first IB class in my school so I the teachers are not always that helpful so I appreciate any help I can get here.…

HI, so I am thinking about my Bio IA right now. I couldn't think of anything else other than enzyme, -- What is the effect of () on enzyme activity, which is just boring beyond words. So the question is, does the Bio IA have to be interesting? What if I could have a fairly well structured and well planned IA, would it still have to be something interesting to help me to achieve a 7?

Hey guys, As you may be able to tell from my signature, one of the IB courses that I will be taking during high school happens to be Biology HL. This is completely due to the fact that I want to enter the medical field when I join the workforce. So I finally decided to buy a beginner- level biology workbook from the local bookstore today and I cannot figure out what/ how I'm supposed to study the material. I have a similar workbook for chemistry and I have never encountered any troubles taking notes off that, however it seems as if the biology subject is nothing more than memorization of definitions and diagrams. Chemistry, on the other hand, is all about memorizatio…

Ok so I'm done the exploration part of my IA, but I'm really frustrated about the raw data portion of it I'm doing mine on the correlation between PM2.5 emissions and the annual incidence of lung cancer in countries that have universal health care. The problem is that I only have 19 countries and Idk if that's sufficient. It's way too late to change the topic, but I chose to do that topic because what we did for my group 4 project inspired me kind of. Also, I looked at exemplars that got decent marks and this one exemplar is the correlation between HDI and the incidence of tuberculosis had HDI and incidence of tuberculosis data for three consecutive years in their tab…

I just have a few questions regarding IB expectations with regards to lab reports. What sourcing style does the IB prefer / require for lab reports? (Ex: Harvard, AP). If non, which is the most popular within the scientific community? Is there a word limit or page limit for the lab report? If so, is the appendix included within the word/page limit? If there exists a word limit, are footnotes included? What would be appropriate to place within the appendix of the lab report? Would pictures be appropriate? Is it required / recommended to take pictures? If so, should you be in the pictures? Additionally, where would be the most appropriate area to place these pictures within…

Hello, I'm in HL bio and I'm doing my extended essay on the effect of glucose in the performance in power sports. I know this isn't the EE forum but my questions have to do with bio course content so I figured it would be better here. Anyways, from what I have understood, respiration uses O2 and glucose to produce ATP. What I am wondering is does this ATP go to the muscles or stay within the cell? Or do the muscle cells/tissue produce their own ATP? I looked into the process of muscle contraction, and it says that in the sarcomere the myosin has ADP, and then binds to ATP, and that is pretty much where the textbook lost me... Did the myosin and the actin make the ATP? …

In my school, the selection of topics is not free, we receive topics that we have to work on. I have to do something about heart rates and treadmills, this topic seems like it's too easy, and wouldn't earn me any marks since it is extremely simple. Is it possible to complicate this in any way? Perhaps by adding new variables or something? I assume measuring the heart rates and different speeds would be way too simple to get me anything decent. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

Hiya, Just wanted to accquire some advice on doing well in the IA's for ESS. So far I've done about 3 IAs in ESS with one due next week. It's not a hard one it's a design one.
