Hey Guys The IB has strict rules for the EE about the topic not being picked up from off the internet. Do the same rules apply for IAs? I have a few topics in mind but when I google them, a lot of pdfs/links come up also are replicating hypoxic conditions for experiments (For aquatic organisms) against the IB guidelines?

Hello, I really need the IB Questionbank Biology (Last edition). Is there a possibility that I can get to it? I search on Google and it just showed the old edition, which belongs to the old syllabus. I need the new edition, which is related to the new syllabus. It's very urgent. Kind regards, and Thank you!

Biology IA Setup Advice
by Guest michaelwm- 0 replies

Hello, For my Biology IA, I'm going to be investigating the effect of CO2 on mold growth in the life of strawberries. Essentially, I'm going to inoculate a group of strawberry halves with Rhizopus Stolonifer, place them into an incubator, control it's CO2 level, and record the molds growth over a period of days using a time lapse camera. I'm then going to calculate the rate of mold growth on the strawberry using calculus and analyze the results. The most troubling part of this is the method of controlling the CO2 level within the incubator. Originally, I was simply going to place a solution of yeast, sugar, and water in a corner of the incubator, and increase th…

Hey guys, I know that there is an overload of these things on here but I thought hey I could always try it. Okay so my question is... Is my IA to easy? I am planning on doing a lab about the density of vegetables and the nutritional value of them. However one quick search on the internet gives around a 20403 million hits. So how can I change this to a valid lab for my IA Please keep in mind that I suck at Bio and that I want an easy IA to get my grade up Thanks for the replies!

I'm thinking about taking two HL sciences, Biology and Chemistry, and I'm wondering how hard they are and is it manageable???

Hello everyone, I've just noticed from the Specimen Paper that they've changed the structure of Paper 2 Biology HL (SL too I think) in terms of the marks available for Section A & Section B. Section A being the section with all the Data Based Questions, and Section B the one where you to have answer two big questions in pseudo-essay form. In all exams from 2009 to 2015, Section A is worth 32 out of 72 total marks, whilst Section B is worth 40 marks. In the new syllabus exam, they've limited the number of points you can get in Section B to a maximum of only 32 points, whilst Section A is now worth 40 points. What do you guys think about this change…

Is my IA valid ?
by Guest- 1 reply

Hi everyone, I'm a bit hesitant about my IA. My teacher told me my subject was valid and quite interesting. I'm writing about THC's effect on appetite but as you may have guess I cannot do an experiment to collect the data I need. This mean I'm collecting data from past paper but I'm worried to have problems with plagiarism since I'm just taking numbers, putting them into a table to end up with the exact same graph.. Could anyone advise ? Thank Vincent

The title explains it all. I'm a grade 10 student from British Columbia, Canada and I've decided to apply to the IB Diploma Programme. My school has a limited range of courses to choose from, so I have to do my group 1 and 3 at HL. I don't know how hard it would be to do Biology and Chemistry at HL along with my other two HL classes. My subject selection is: English Literature HL Spanish Ab Initio SL Psychology HL Biology HL Chemistry HL Math SL ToK CAS EE Do any of you do 4 HL's? How much more difficult is it compared to doing 3? My school does offer Chemistry SL, but it runs with Chemistry HL. So I'm taking Chemistry at HL and if I find it difficult I have the option o…

Hey guys, I need a Biology IA due tomorrow! I've been thinking of them for over a month now and I still don't have anything, and it's getting super difficult. What did you do? Were there any topics that you liked but your teacher did not approve ( I can try to get ideas from it). Even discussing topics and things in biology is going to help here THANK YOU SO MUCH

Does anybody have know how much in detail we need to know these drawings. P.S - The list of drawings is more important

I'm taking the IB Biology SL exam next month and want to hear from others who have already taken it or are planning to. I'm not really sure how many days in advance I should be studying or from where... My school has a really low average for Biology tests, a 4.3, and I got a 19/24 score on my IA. I really want to get a 6 or so, so I know I have a lot of work to do on my own. Any tips?

Hey, The textbook that I took my notes off of (Oxford) never makes reference to paternal/maternal chromosomes in meiosis, yet every other resource that I have found makes reference to these. Do we need to make reference to maternal/paternal chromosomes in response to an IB question? I don't think they are in the syllabus so.... yeah Thanks!

My class did the Biology HL Specimen Paper this past week. The only thing that surprised us was that there was nothing to draw. My teacher told us there we typically draw something on the exam. The Specimen Paper is supposed to be an representation of what the IB Exam would be like. Was anyone else confused by this?

It's like Iv'e been studying for something completely different. And I study from the correct syllabus and I go over the required knowledge and understandings. I don't know where I'm going wrong.

Reviewing taxonomy is a nightmare since I didn't really pay attention this chapter... does IB use Archaea, Bacteria, Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista (American) or Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista, Monera (UK)? Which one is most common in the world?

Hi, I am little confused about the topic of recombinations. Does it only occur between linked genes? If so, does that mean that recombinants can only form between crosses of linked genes? This is what I believed but then I saw a couple of videos that confused me. For example, if we have PpGg crossing with ppgg (unlinked genes) PG Pg pG pg pg PpGg Ppgg ppGg ppgg According to the videos I have seen, Ppgg and ppGg are recombinants since none of the parents have these genotypes. But why? Has any crossing over occurred here? Grateful for help!

Hey guys So I've been studying 8.2 and 8.3 (extremely complex and hard, might I add) and there is so much info. I just can't understand what to give importance to (IM using the Oxford book) DO I have to remember ALL diagrams, reactions structures? I understand how Calvin and Krebs work but do I have to remember each and every reaction in this cycle and remember the reduction, oxidation and everything else? Thanks!

Q: Describe the adaptations of plants in deserts to conserve water. A: Desert plants have adapted to the extreme of heat and aridity by using physical and behavioral mechanisms. Plants have adapted by altering their physical structure - xerophytes (cacti). Phreatophytes are plants that have adapted to arid environments by growing extremely long roots to acquire water further underground. I feel like this is not a full answer, the question is worth 4 points so I feel like there's more to it. What am I missing?

Hi I'm currently in IB2 and I will be taking my exams in May this year (so creepy). Just today my biology teacher who isn't an IB teacher suggested that we should do two options and I'm confused. I've asked a few of my friends I've met from IBS and they told me that we only need to do one option for Biology. I just wanted to confirm this twice to feel safe enough to tell my teacher about it. I tried reading the IB Biology Guide for 2016 but I might have left out this information while navigating through 179 pages of dense words, I'm really anxious too. I hope someone could point out the page number for me, if it is in the new biology guide, so I can show it to my tea…

Hey guys, May is coming up real soon. I am wondering, for those who got a 6 or 7 in Biology HL or those who are studying it right now, do you have any strategies in revising Biology? There are a lot of reactions, for example, photosynthesis, respiration, DNA transcription, translation, replication, clonal selection theory, myosin head and actin filaments..... (Personally, I can remember everything, but I am scared not writing all the details in the biology hl exam) Can you give me some advice please? Gracias

Hello, I had to defer a year because of an accident, and so could not take the IB Sciences exams last year. I now have to transition into the new syllabus from the old syllabus, except that I am having great, and I mean GREAT difficulties in doing so. My two science subjects are: Biology HL and Chemistry HL. I was always a 5 student in HL Biology, and I was always bad at HL Chemistry. I have no remorse over chemistry, as I have been failing it before the accident. But I do have remorse for biology, because I was always a 5 student and now I have hit rock bottom and is only getting 3s. This is horrible for me! After the accident, because I had a …

Lab Report Data does not fit hypothesis

I'm doing a practice IA and my data does not fit the hypothesis. In the mark scheme, it says that we need justification for our conclusion - does this mean that I need to find a resource that shares the same trend? Or can I just state that our data did not fit the trends of x sources and state it would be due to the problems mentioned in the evaluation? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have finished my Biology IA and the actual investigation itself has exactly 12 pages, but then I have more pages for the appendix which shows the same data that is present in the actual investigation only that more developed and in more detail. My question is whether I'll get marks docked off for having these extra pages?

Hello, I'm doing my ESS IA. A few weeks ago, I gathered data in an area and measured the vegetation and also abiotic factors like the pH or the particles of the soil. I was planning on doing my IA on the relation between the pH and the total vegetation in each quadrant. Do you think that it's a good idea or as it's is in the same area the pH will not affect the differences in the vegetation? Thank you for the help!

I am debating whether or not to take the ESS HL and Spanish ab initio or maybe I should take the ESS SL and my native language HL instead (because i think it's easier but then on the other hand I will not be able to learn Spanish)? WHAT SHOULD I DO?? I am vegan, therefore I think that ESS HL could be better/easier choice for me. Please help me. I am afraid and scared of failing and I feel like I do not deserve to be in the IB program.

My teacher scored me a 17/24 on my IA for biology SL. Is that good? Like a 6 or 7? I know in psychology, anything above like a 15 is a 7, but I feel like it's lower for bio. I also realize IB can score it differently than he did, but I am still just curious.
