Guys for my ia i was going to do a comparison of soil that grows rice from an organic and inorganic farm and with a test kit test the ph, soil organic matter and nitrogen my teachers thinks its suitable to do but i have doubts because you cant really compare an inorganic and organic farm by those 3 test can you?? My teacher is no way giving me any security i feel so lost could someone please give me their opinion and what would you suggest? would appreciate replies

Hey, So I just got my IA result and it is very bad. I got a 9/24. We only get 2 weeks to fix the IA and Im scared that I wouldnt be able to fix it The teacher did write comments, but they are a bit confusing and even after reading them I am not so sure how to fix it and get a better grade. Can anyone please give me tips or send me a private message so that I can talk to him about it? Is it even possible to get from a 9 to a good grade? Thank you

What I'm planning to do is test the effect of pH on algae growth, but I'm not sure how I'd manipulate the pH (should I use HCl or something?) or how to make algal media (is it sugar, sea water, and plant fertilizer?). Thanks for all your help!

Hi I was wondering what sort of research questions could be made using computer simulations. Every single person on the internet seems like they've done actual lab experiments, and I don't want to do one. So what sort of research question can you draw out using simulations? If its specifically on enzymes, that would help me a lot. Thanks, Y

hey again guys, I have one quick question that I hope someone can answer. Do you think it´d be fine if I used two independent variables for my Bio IA? I´m scared that my experiment would be considered too easy so I thought that maybe using two independent variables would make it better. The problem is, there won´t be a relation between the two independent variables so I´m not sure if I´m gonna be having troubles when writing my report.

Hey, Originally I came up with a research question for a Biology EE that involved investigating corrosion in pipes but when I spoke to a researcher at a university they said it would be too difficult and would take too much time, money and resources. They suggested an experiment investigating antimicrobial action on bacteria. But, the only thing I am worried about is that an experiment investigating inhibition of bacteria growth by different antimicrobials will not be complex enough and I will have difficulties reaching a reasonable word count. I have found a reasonably long research paper online that does something very similar to what was suggested to me, and it…

It was really hard for me to find a biology IA, specially because I really wanted it to be something that I´m interested in and passionate about. So finally I decided to choose something that is related to me in a way. I have Hyperhidrosis, which is a medical condition in which a person sweats excessively and unpredictably. The idea for my IA is to see if there is a correlation between a person who has hyperhidrosis and a person who has cystic fibrosis. What I´m planning to do is use a conductivity sensor to measure the electrical conductivity in sweat produced after performing a physical activity in a person with hyperhidrosis (me), in a person wi…

Ok, So my biology internal assessment is a little... made up. I have no idea if it will work, neither does my teacher, so I'm like praying to god it will. What I'm trying to do is look at the effect of ethanol on photosynthesis, doing the test where you get spinach leaf disks and wait till they float to see what rate they produce oxygen at. I'm planning to change the concentration of ethanol in the solution, hoping it makes an effect of some sort. I have 2 questions 1) the density of ethanol is less than water. Do I have to mention this? its about 78% the density of water, is there anyway I can do a calculation to account for the affect that the lower …

My proposal for my bio EE is due soon, and I'm still unsure of what I should research on. I'm generally drawn to researching on the antibacterial effects of different substances, and am wondering if it will be easy to carry out in the lab. I was thinking about how different soaps may have different antibacterial effects, but I'm unsure if it seems too easy for an EE. Additionally, I was thinking of studying the effects of different probiotics on bacteria. Are there any other subjects of research that I should consider? I'm not sure if bacteria is easy to work with, as the results may be unpredictable. Will working with plants be easier? Thanks!

Hey everyone, Our experiments for our IAs are starting soon and I am not sure which statistical analysis to use - here is my experimental method and idea so far (haven't checked it with my teacher yet, any improvements or suggestions are welcome!) To look at how pollution affects plant growth I want to investigate the affects of acid rain on seed germination. I would do this by growing my own cress, but watering the different cress plants (in separate pots) with water of different pH, so to simulate normal rain water I would use water of 5.6 (pH) and to simulate acid rain I would use a pH of 4 or lower. I am not really sure yet how I will split the plants up and…

Hello guys. I was wondering, how do you cope with combining SL and HL material? i find it annoying while making notes that SL part is in the front of the book, but for the HL material I have to look at the back of the book. I am asking about biology, but actually it may concern any subject.

So, I'm trying to make research question for biology ia, and I'm wondering if the research question's result is kind of obvious, would I get low points? For example, if the research question is "How does temperature affect a certain enzyme activity?" It's pretty obvious that the enzyme would have the optimal activity around at 40 degrees Celsius. So my question is even though the research question's result can be predicted easily, is it possible to get high scores just by having a really good investigation?

So I've literally been trying to come up with a good Biology IA idea for months and haven't gotten very far. I recently stumbled upon an article about the Maillard reaction (a "chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars that gives browned food its desirable flavor" e.g. the process that makes toast taste better than regular bread) and I found it pretty interesting but I'm having trouble developing it into a research question/realistic lab, so can anyone give me a do-able idea related to this? (Or maybe another food-related idea). I'm doing HL if that makes a difference. Thank you.

I'm a biology HL student and my IA is on the effect of temperature on lactase activity. I finished my experiment successfully and I have started writing the actual IA, but I am concerned about the research question. My research question is the following: How does exposing lactase to different temperatures affect its activity as a catalyst of lactose breakdown in regular whole milk, measured by change in glucose concentration? I feel like it is very long, but my teacher disagrees and wants me to add more information in it, like the temperature range, the exact kind of milk (fat % included), and the device I used to measure glucose concentration (I used a blood glucos…

Okay.. So I'm currently thinking of ways of doing very well or at least well on my finals. I was thinking of getting a biology tutor, BUT.. I'll be spending too much cash on tutors if I do so. I already have a math tutor at the moment, so I'm thinking its a bit unnecessary when I can have a study group and go to after school classes. My school offers after school biology classes at the moment, but I'm finding that I'm not getting as much as I ideally want from them. I think its mainly because of the time. Everyone is so EXHAUSTED after school and stuff, including the teachers, so its like the whole lesson ends up being a bit lousy. Dont get me wrong though, because I'm st…

Help needed with Biology IA SL topic

Hello everyone! I have been looking for an IA subject in Biology and wanted to work on something related to corals, since it is a topic discussed in the "Ecology" section. So far, The current question I want to answer is "What is the effect of carbonic acid on limestone in marine conditions?", which delves into the topic of ocean acidification but am afriad that this question goes too much into chemistry rather than Biology. What do you all think? Is this more chemistry oriented? If so how can I still talk about corals but keep it in Biology?

For my bio ia I was thinking of doing something relating to human physiology, I wanted to compare the hearts of two different animals such as a rabbit or a sheep but I am unsure of how to carry this out as an ia. Like I am not sure what I should be comparing in the heart, should I be comparing the blood flow, the structure of it or what? And I am also unsure if this is a viable experiment to do and if it is acceptable in the IB. Please helppp, any suggestions or ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

Hello, I just have a quick question about the extended EE. For my EE, I plan to test the effect of chinese herbal medicine on the growth of bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus pneumoniae or haemophilus influenzae. Apparently, it is not advisable to use bacteria cultures due to IB's rules about experimenting on microorganisms. Should I still continue with experimenting on these bacteria? I am really not sure what the requirements and rules of the EE are, I really don't know much about the Biology EE as we just started planning it out. If you guys could help me out that would be great!! Thank you in advance.

Hi, I've finished doing my experiment and I am now trying to write up my lab report. My research question is "How does changing the concentration (100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, 1%) of potato solution containing the enzyme catalase affect the speed of at which a paper disk sinks and rises in a beaker of 1.5% concentration of hydrogen peroxide?" and I'm not sure whether i'm doing it right anymore? Does my RQ make sense at all? Also I've just realised my independent variable, the concentration of potato solution isn't decreasing proportionally because of that 1% at the end but I need atleast 5 variables. Would this greatly affect my lab report? I'm completely lost a…

Hello to all who are reading this! So I have completed my first year of bio and I did fine but I would like to do better!!! I was wondering if anyone who did good on the lab reports would mind sending me on example that I can mold my own around. Also, if someone did really good on their IA then I would like the same as above. I really want to work with physiology stuff but that may be too difficult to do. And also I need help with the EE stuff because it seems like the format varies per person and I want to see one that is along the lines …

Hello, How can glycolysis occur if there is no oxygen present? I understand that if there is no oxygen present, NADH + H^+ cannot be oxidised into NAD^+ which is needed for the link reaction and krebs cycle as oxygen is the terminal electron acceptor during oxidative phosphorylation and therefore the electrons will remain in the integral membrane proteins (electron carriers) in the inner mitochondrial membrane. But isn't NAD^+ needed for glyoclysis as well? so how can glycolysis happen? does it get its NAD^+ from another sources other than oxidative phosphorylation?

It does not count in the long run but if I fail it I will not be able to continue HL Bio, and will not get my diploma . I'm at a level 1-3. I want to get a level 5 to raise my average so that I do not fail. But I barely know anything at all. The topics are 1, 2, 7 and 8. I feel like I really just need to memorize the Oxford study guide for those topics to get a 7. Is memorizing all that possible if I have NO background knowledge. I have 1 week. What to do.
