My IA for biology is due in exactly 10 hours. I do not have a topic and I didn't do any labs at my school. I want to do it on analyzing data collected from a database, but have no idea how. Can someone recommend a good database and some guidance as to how to write this? Thank you from one procrastinator to another.

Hi, My research question is "what are the effects of gravity on directional plant growth and development in small white kidney beans?". I've carried out my experiment and collected my data, with 10 trials for each of the 3 independent variables: bean seed's hilum facing 3/9 o'clock, 6 c'clock, and 12 c'clock. Aside from some raw qualitative data and the measured lengths of the bean plants (collected after 1 and a half week), I do not know if my data processing needs to have more than just the mean and standard deviation for each of the 3 independent variables. My teacher suggested me to graph the lengths of the bean plants and base my discussion off of it, but she di…

I'm in IB Y1 and so far we've done Unit 1,2,4,5 (SL) and HL unit 9 and are working on 7. So far, for bio I've found it really hard and struggle a lot. I can't seem to get more than 50% ish for any test and struggle on data answers, long answers the most. I spend about a decent amount of time studying but I still don't do well... Let me know if you have any tips on how to study smarter, not longer as I want to do well and am very determined. I thought it was just me and how I was struggling with IB in general but in math I got my 4 up to a 6 on one test so that went well, I can tell I'm understanding the content better but bio I struggle with a lot and can't se…

Hello, My individual investigation for biology is due next week. My topic was quickly approved by my teacher, but I missed the optional draft due date due to the fact that I was having trouble processing my data. My lab is about exercise physiology, and more specifically, the effect of resting time during running on muscle fatigue, meausred by how long it took test subjects to run a lap around a track after resting for different amounts of times between trials. When researching my topic, I found that a lot of what I was testing was outside of the basic ATP cellular respiration taught in IB bio SL. In my lab background info, I talk about ATP creation in muscles, which…

My IA is to investigate the effects of calcium carbide towards the rate of ripening of bananas. Any idea regarding how do i get the quantitative data for this experiment? I'm stucked at the procedure to measure the rate without destroying the sample (bananas). Ive attached a paper that is quite similar to what im gonna do. Maybe u guys could get some idea of how they did the procedures. And im having problem to understand how they determine the percentage of ripeness of banana based on the banana colour chart. out (5).pdf

Hi, I'm doing my Biology extended essay on how the environment alters expression of gens when it comes to their expression in the phenotype using drosophila melanogaster, and I was wondering if someone could help me with the following issue. I need to know how much do I need to explain about the drosophila, and how it should be structured, since it is not the central focus of my EE, just a means to an end. Thank you very much!

So you all probably know the method of extracting chlorophyll from leaves using ethanol, but I don't understand why this works. What effect does the alcohol have on the cell membrane? I've done a lot of research on this, but there doesn't seem to be a concrete answer. What I've gotten so far: - The alcohol molecule sits inside the phospholipid bilayer and disrupts the ordering of the phospholipids - Lipids (although I don't know which lipids they're referring to) dissolve in the alcohol, creating holes in the membrane. Also, if the lipids (i'm assuming the hydrocarbon tails) dissolve, then the alcohol wouldn't still be sitting in the bilayer, would it? - S…

Hi! I am planning to do my Bio IA on how do different light intensities affect rate of photosynthesis (of a pondweed, idk specifically what species yet) IV- light intensity. I aim to place the plant away from the lamp in various distances (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 cm) DV- CO2 uptake by plant (measuring pH of water) OR counting bubbles of oxygen produced in/per one minute OR measuring oxygen produced by using a gas stringe 1. Is it necessary to have a lux-meter to measure the lux of the light intensities? Or will just stating the distance of the plant from the lamp be enough? 2. To measure my DV - which way is the best? Hi everyone, I'm really confused on what the Group 4 project is...Are we supposed to do an experiment? Do we write a research paper? How many words do we have to write? Is it a presentation? All the instructions are really vague, so I don't really understand what we're supposed to do.

Hello, I'm currently working on my Bio IA (standard level) and need some help brainstorming some good ideas. I have two ideas... - Comparison of the rate of germination between different bean seeds that have been exposed to different types of fertilizers. - Look at how much time it takes for bacteria to contaminate food when it’s dropped in order to prove the 5 second rule. Either feedback on my current ideas or new ideas are welcomed!!! Thanks!!!

Hi, I already have started my IA, and I'm almost done with writing my introduction, but I cannot for the life of me figure out what to write for my hypothesis. My IA is on which face washes prevent bacterial growth best. I have participants use face wash, wash it off, and then I take a cotton swab and collect cells from their forehead which I then swipe onto petri dishes with nutrient agar in them. I'm using St. Ive's Apricot Scrub, Clean & Clear's Morning Burst and Deep Action cleansers, Pond's Cold Cream, and no face wash for a comparison. I can find the ingredients for all, but I'm having trouble finding what amounts are in each and how their different ingredients …

Can someone explain to me the statistical analysis option for the Bio IA (I'm in HL if that helps)... Our teacher gave us a really bad explanation and I don't understand. We talked about IA's in class like once and never again so our teacher didn't really give us any time or help at all with this so I figure this is the easier route -- how do you do this type of IA and what's the best way to go about it??? Plz help. Thank u fams.

Hi, I was just wondering if a biology IA would be marked down if it is too simple. I also do HL chemistry and our teacher encourages us to choose something we can't just google, however, my biology teacher has basically told me nothing and the examples we have been given aren't helping me. If I were to do an IA on the effects of NaCl concentration on peroxidase activity or yeast fermentation, would this be too simple, typical and straight forward? Any suggestions welcome. Thanks so much

So im doing my EE on biology, and im thingking of two topics right now, the first would be to do a comparative study between two small lakes in my neighbourhood, the lakes are about only a few kilometers apart, but on has been subjected to pollutants due to people using the area for recreational purposes, the other lake has remained pristine. I will do a water analysis to find the compounds dissolved in the water, and also collect the plants found in both lakes, also noting the densities and the species of plants found. The other topic im thingking of is to do an experiment where i compare the antibacterial effectiveness of natural and locally founds herbs an…

Hey guys I have the first draft of my Bio IA due sometime in the first week of February. My research topic is: " What is the effect of temperature on the activity rate of amylase". Right now I'm having trouble finding a way to get my materials together. My top priority is enzymes as we can borrow scales, beakers and etc. I've been searching online but with no success. On Amazon they have a good deal, but it won't ship to Canada. I saw this other website but the approximate time it takes to ship from their warehouse in Montana to Calgary takes 2-3 weeks, which is past my deadline. As a last resort if I cannot get enzymes, I'm wondering if I could use saliva as it has amyla…

Hello! I literally just came up with this idea (I've been searching all morning) and I was wondering if this theme for my ESS IA would be approved and if it is, how can I carry it out? You know how we discard all types of products in the sink and all of that goes to our oceans and rivers? Well I wanted to test out how can different products with different ph leves affect the growth of plants. I know the question is still too broad but like I said I just got the idea. Any feedback would be genuinely appreciated!

At my school, it's never been done, but the course is also condensed into one year and by no means it is an "IB School" (meaning, IB is definitely not the program our school revolves around). So, I continue to wonder, do I attribute this apparent difficulty in earning a 7 to the test itself or to the students taking it (or, of course, both...)? Any opinions from people who have taken the test? Also, our coordinator also said something about blaming Group 4 for her lack of 7s. Does anyone know what she might mean by this?

Hi everyone! I had to switch my IA topic basically last minute (I only have about 2 weeks to do it now) and after having my teacher tell me that it could be research-based, I stumbled upon the following idea in an ESS book: Investigation ecological footprints Suggested research question: What is the relationship between ecological footprint and the level of development of a country and what are people's attitudes to possible solutions to high ecological footprints? My teacher approved the concept but said it was best to change it up a little seeing as the IB already knows the idea/IA. I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me in regards to possible …

Can I turn in an IA that doesn't have any calculations done because the data wasn't adequate? Or is that not an Internal Assessment?

Hello, I chose my Biology IA topic from a book, where they explain the procedure to be followed. I have paraphrased this, however, I would like to ask you if I have to still cite it. If I cite it, isn't it considered as plagiarized? Because the Biology IA should be an original idea? I would really appreciate if someone explains me about it. Thank you so much, Danilo.

hey everyone. I´m almost done with my bio IA. It´s about the effect of coffee on the germination rate of bean seeds. I feel that it was a pretty simple experiment. I had 5 different containers. 10 seeds in each one, with different concentrations of coffee (I watered them with it), with one control group. The dependant variable was the days it took the seeds to germinate. The problem tthat I have is that I don´t know which statistical test I should use for the analysis. I did the ANOVA test but the result seemed...off. I don´t know if that was because ANOVA is not the right tool to use for this experiment. But I don´t really know of any other test that I can us…

Hey guys, As is stated in the title, anyone who is taking Biology SL or HL (both DP1/ year 1and DP2/ year 2) can register to be part of a personalized study group. This group consists of fellow IB students from a nearby timezone. You will be allocated on behalf of your topic understandings and confidence level. We will try to keep HL and SL students separated due to the extra topics that are covered at higher level but we would like to know if you want first year and second year students to be mixed. Here is the registration form for the first session (january until february). https://goo.gl/forms/LJX4uRmI5KFDF2k83

To keep it short and simple, I never really had the first meeting with my Biology teacher where we would have discussed my IA topic. But I went with one I had anyways and made a very nice lab report on it; great statistics and great general analysis. However, I spoke with my teacher yesterday and he said that my topic was more of an "ESS" topic rather than a Biology one. He actually suggested I do everything again, which would be 5K words out the window, as well as a lot of time spent. My IA research question is "What is the germination and vigour of lentils"; Where I then have 3 different lentil varieties that I made 4 replications of each for. (50x4) Then the po…

i have a topic for my Bio IA which is, the effect of sugar on seed germination. I don't know what seeds i'll be using yet, but i will place them in a container surrounded by cotton buds and will add water every day, with plain water as the constant. I not entirely sure what concentration levels of sugar to use or how to calculate molars. I'm not sure what the results would be. How many seed have germinated? the growth of the seeds? and how it could become meaningful data, e.g. tables, graphs. if anyone has done an IA or prac similar to this or has some knowledge, any input would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
